fix(ui): All tools ▸ Edit a PDF turns on Edit text & images at once - #4605
Opening Edit a PDF from All tools showed the Edit panel, but the page wasn't editable until Edit was clicked a second time in the mode bar. The Edit tab already turns Edit text & images on when it opens (enter_mode, "as Acrobat does"); the All tools route goes through select_tool, which only switched the panel.
select_tool("edit") turns on QuickTool::EditText. Home, the command palette and the control channel's tool option use the same function, so they now behave alike.
Choosing another tool from there while in All tools puts editing down and applies a paragraph still open (put_down_edit_text), as leaving the Edit tab does. Under the Edit tab, another tool from the panel leaves editing on, as before.
The workspace stays All tools, so the panel keeps its "Back to all tools" arrow.
Test.ui::edit_a_pdf_from_all_tools_turns_on_editing clicks All tools ▸ Edit a PDF and checks the tool is Edit text & images, that another tool puts it down, and that in the Edit workspace another tool leaves it on. With the select_tool change reverted it fails at "Edit text & images is on at once" (left: Select, right: EditText).
Never-crash
No new unwrap/expect/panic!, indexing or unsafe
Provenance
No assets or copied code; the behaviour follows the existing Edit tab and Acrobat's Edit a PDF
Parity and reach
parity/acrobat-features.toml: the edit-existing-text entry now says Edit a PDF turns the tool on too, citing the new test
Headless: the control channel's tool edit goes through the same function
Anything a reviewer should look at first
Leaving Edit a PDF for another tool only puts editing down outside the Edit workspace (mode != Mode::Edit). Inside it, the existing behaviour (editing stays on with another tool's panel open) is kept on purpose rather than changed in this PR.

Walkthrough
Selecting Edit activates EditText outside Read mode. Selecting another tool handles active text editing according to the current workspace. Integration tests check quick-tool state and verify that switching to Organize applies open paragraph text.

Selecting Edit activates EditText outside Read mode. Selecting another tool can put down active text editing outside Edit mode. Tests check quick-tool state across workspaces and verify that switching to Organize closes the paragraph editor and applies its text. The parity notes describe the Edit entry points and tool-switching behavior.
Issue 5383 reports that All tools ▸ Edit a PDF does not show the Edit text & images option. This change activates EditText when Edit is selected from All tools.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 37969
The All tools editing and paragraph-application behavior has direct test coverage. No outstanding issue identified here prevents merging after normal checks.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to d3b92
Existing document-editing permissions remain enforced. However, switching tools can now discard an unsaved paragraph draft if applying it fails. The impact is confined to the active document’s editing session.
Retained concerns
Medium · reliability · inferred: Automatic finalization newly exposes tool selection to rejected-draft loss. Outside the Edit workspace, selecting another tool consumes the active paragraph editor and switches to Select before applying its edit. If application fails, this path neither retains the editor nor supplies the applied_editor snapshot used by normal rejection recovery. The error is reported, but the typed draft can be lost. The helper already behaved this way for mode transitions; this PR broadens its callers. Other commit paths explicitly restore rejected drafts, and engine atomicity protects the document but not this unsaved UI state.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The identified failure-containment impact is limited to an unsaved paragraph draft in the active view. The inspected finalization path does not iterate across documents or apply the draft to a separate service or data store.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The control-channel tool option resolves a catalogue identifier before invoking select_tool. The changed selector explicitly avoids activating EditText in Read mode, while document permission enforcement remains at the mutation sink.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The engine runs edits against a cloned document and propagates edit rejection before replacing the original state. This contains failed document mutations, but does not recover a UI draft already consumed by the tool transition.

Cover paragraph application at the All tools transition.
The test uses FIXTURE, which has no page content stream, so it cannot create an open paragraph. It asserts only QuickTool::Select after switching to Organize. Removing the new put_down_edit_text() call would leave the test passing.
Use the existing text-fixture paragraph setup, then assert that switching tools applies the open paragraph. This targets the changed call site without adding exhaustive duplicate assertions.

Approving. Opening All tools, Edit a PDF now turns on Edit text and images at once, as the Edit tab does, and leaving it for another tool from All tools puts editing down again while the Edit tab keeps it; the condition only fires outside Mode::Edit with the Edit tool panel open and an edit-text or add-text quick tool active. The parity note and evidence are updated to match. I read the whole source diff; the gate and SonarCloud pass at c142b17. I read the code and the CI results; I did not run the app.

…ols applies the open paragraph
Review on storytold#4605:
- The control channel's `tool edit` in Read mode turned Edit text & images on although Read
mode hides the quick toolbar and keeps every tool down. `select_tool` now leaves it off there.
- The test now opens a paragraph, types into it and switches to another tool from Edit a PDF,
checking the typed text is applied (it fails with the `put_down_edit_text` call removed).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Follow-up since the approval (b42589f), from CodeRabbit's review:
Read mode:tool edit through the control channel no longer turns Edit text & images on in Read mode, which hides the quick toolbar and keeps the tools down. Covered at the end of ui::edit_a_pdf_from_all_tools_turns_on_editing.
Applying the open paragraph: new editing::another_tool_from_edit_a_pdf_applies_the_open_paragraph opens "Page 1" from Edit a PDF, types into it, switches to Organize and checks the text was applied. (CodeRabbit's note that removing put_down_edit_text() would leave the old test passing doesn't hold, since the quick tool would stay EditText; but the old test didn't check the paragraph, and this one does.)
Both new checks were seen failing with their line of the fix removed. cargo fmt --check and clippy -D warnings on pdfcraft-ui-egui pass.
Not changed here: the security note that typed text could be lost if applying it fails. That is put_down_edit_text, the existing path that leaving the Edit tab already takes; this PR only reaches it from one more place. Making it keep the draft on a refused edit would change the Edit tab's behaviour too, so it seems better as its own change.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Re-approving at b42589f. This is the one commit since my approval at c142b17.
select_tool("edit") now leaves quick_tool alone when mode == Mode::Read. Read mode keeps every tool down, so this settles CodeRabbit's Read-mode point.
The else if branch that puts editing down when you leave Edit a PDF is unchanged.
ui::edit_a_pdf_from_all_tools_turns_on_editing now enters Read mode and checks that tool edit leaves QuickTool::Select.
The new editing::another_tool_from_edit_a_pdf_applies_the_open_paragraph types into the open paragraph, switches to Organize, and checks the text was applied.
The gate, SonarCloud and CodeRabbit pass at b42589f, and the branch merges cleanly with current main. I read the diff and the CI results; I didn't run the tests myself. I agree that keeping the draft when applying is refused belongs in its own change.
Checked by hand in a Windows release build (this branch together with the other two open fixes, #4605, #4620 and #4624, on main 418ac6a): works as described.

Restore the editor when applying the draft fails.
select_tool calls put_down_edit_text, which removes the editor before applying the draft and ignores apply_edit's failure result. A valid editor input such as U+10FFFF can make rewrite_block return an error. The document remains unchanged, but the draft and editor are lost when switching tools from All tools.

Our post-closing team moved from Acrobat to PdfCraft this week and hit exactly this. Opening All tools ▸ Edit a PDF left the page taking only new text boxes, so they concluded PdfCraft can't edit existing text. Clicking Edit in the mode bar works, but nobody finds that on their own. Would love to see this merged. Thanks for the fix.
The Edit tab turned Edit text & images on when it opened, as Acrobat does, but All tools ▸
Edit a PDF (and Home, the command palette and the control channel's `tool` option, which all
go through `select_tool`) only showed the Edit panel: the page wasn't editable until Edit was
clicked a second time. `select_tool("edit")` now turns the tool on, and choosing another tool
from there in All tools puts it down again and applies a paragraph still open, as leaving the
Edit tab does. Under the Edit tab the workspace keeps editing on, as before.

Thanks @apetra-dev, glad it helps, and good to hear from a team that hit it in practice. Rebased onto current main (now after #4620), so it's ready to merge.
Add the All tools paragraph-application test to evidence.
The notes now claim that leaving All tools ▸ Edit a PDF applies an open paragraph. The dedicated test is crates/ui-egui/tests/it/editing.rs::another_tool_from_edit_a_pdf_applies_the_open_paragraph, but the evidence list does not include it. Add the test so this new user-facing behavior has direct passing-test evidence.
