fix(edit): leave Edit a PDF from its panel, and delete selected objects - #4247
Two things in Edit a PDF that a user hit right away: editing could not be left from the panel,
and an object could not be deleted.
Leaving Edit a PDF
Only the mode bar put Edit text & images down (enter_mode → put_down_edit_text). Every other
way out moved the panel or the tool and left editing on underneath, with every paragraph still
boxed:
Way out
Before
Now
× on the Edit panel
closed the panel only
leaves Edit (All tools), as Acrobat's Close does
< (Back to all tools)
set mode directly
goes through enter_mode
Another tool (Other options, catalogue)
kept EditText under the new tool
puts it down (select_tool)
Select tool / V
switched the tool, left an open paragraph unapplied
applies it first (put_down_edit_text)
A paragraph still open is applied in each case, as switching mode already did.
Entering Edit a PDF from All tools
The other way round: opening Edit a PDF from All tools, Home or the palette (select_tool("edit"))
showed its panel but left the Select tool on, so clicking text or an image edited nothing. It now
turns on Edit text & images as the Edit tab does, and Back puts it down again.
Deleting objects
Objects selected in Edit a PDF (by a paragraph's frame, Shift-click or a marquee) could be moved
but not deleted: no key, no menu, and no engine edit to remove an existing paragraph.
Delete / Backspace on an object selection now deletes it as one undo step ("Delete
object(s)"), as in Acrobat. A lone selected image keeps its own Delete.
Edit::DeleteObjects { page, objects } mirrors MoveObjects: targets resolve against the
original inventories before any change, and a refusal leaves the document untouched.
pdfcraft_edit::delete_objects deletes paragraphs with text::delete_blocks, then images
(last index first) and added items (last first).
delete_blocks turns each text-showing operation of the paragraph into a TJ that moves by
the same advance. The text after it on the same line stays where it was, and the strings leave
the content stream. Hiding them (3 Tr) would leave the text searchable and copyable, as a bad
redaction does. Clipping text and vertical text are refused, as in translate_blocks.
2 new strings (the undo labels), translated in all 33 catalogs.
mixed_object_deletes_are_one_undo_step_and_survive_save_reopen (engine): a native paragraph,
an added label and an added image are deleted together; the saved file reopens with none of
them; one undo restores all three; a stale target is refused without a new generation.
delete_removes_the_selected_objects_in_one_step (UI): marquee, Delete; the unselected
paragraph keeps its place; ⌘Z restores the page.
closing_the_edit_panel_leaves_editing (UI): × leaves Edit for All tools with the Select tool;
the Select tool puts Edit text & images down.
edit_a_pdf_from_all_tools_turns_on_edit_text_and_images (UI): Edit a PDF from All tools
turns the tool on; Back puts it down.
Delete multiple selected page objects—including text, images, and added items—in one action. Deletions can be undone, and invalid selections leave the document unchanged.
Press Delete or Backspace to remove selected objects.
Bug Fixes
Switching away from text editing now puts down the active text tool before changing tools.
Closing the Edit panel returns to the standard tools and Select mode.
Selecting Edit from All tools opens the Edit panel and activates text editing without changing the workspace mode.
Closing the Edit panel, Back, another tool and the Select tool (V) only moved
the panel or the tool and left Edit text & images on underneath; they now put
it down as the mode bar does, applying a paragraph still open.
Delete or Backspace removes the objects selected in Edit a PDF (by frame,
Shift-click or marquee) as one undo step, as Acrobat does. Edit::DeleteObjects
resolves the selection first like MoveObjects; a paragraph's text-showing
operations become moves of the same advance, so its text leaves the page while
the text after it on the line stays where it was.

Walkthrough
The pull request adds mixed-object deletion for page content and connects it to engine and UI edits. It also changes Edit tool transitions and updates SHA-256 records for 32 translation catalogs.
Adds text-block and image deletion operations, plus a mixed-object deletion function that validates targets and commits only after all deletions succeed.
Adds Edit::DeleteObjects handling for content scope, permission checks, dispatch, undo labels, and content refresh. Tests cover mixed deletion, save and reopen, undo, and stale targets.
Selection deletion in the UI crates/ui-egui/src/object_ui.rs, crates/ui-egui/tests/it/object_selection.rs
Delete and Backspace queue deletion for an idle, nonempty selection. The test checks deletion, selection clearing, and undo.

Closing or leaving Edit can leave hidden editing active in Read mode, restore Edit after Space is released, or lose a typed paragraph that the engine refuses. A refused delete also clears the selection. These are localized interaction defects with workarounds; fix them before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 423dd
Deletion remains permission-checked and document changes are committed atomically. The main concern is recovery of pending text: newly shared exit paths can discard an unapplied paragraph if applying it fails. The impact is bounded to that draft; no new permission bypass was established.
Retained concerns
Low · reliability · inferred: Newly routed tool and panel exits complete the transition without preserving ownership of a paragraph draft across commit failure. put_down_edit_text removes line_editor before applying the edit, but does not populate applied_editor, the recovery source used on refusal. Consequently, a refused apply can discard unapplied typing while leaving the document unchanged. The helper already behaved this way at the base; this PR expands exposure through additional exits. Operational refusal frequency remains unverified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
observed — The new deletion operation targets one page in the document identified by the existing session API. Its sensitive outcome is modification of that document's content, not acquisition of another document identity or new execution authority.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — DeleteObjects requires the same document-modification permission as other content edits. Session.apply checks that permission before mutation. UI deletion also requires EditText and allows_modification, and yields while a text field owns the keyboard or another edit is pending.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — This is ordinary undoable editing, not secure redaction. Rewritten page contents use replacement streams, history retains prior document snapshots, and content refresh uses incremental writing. Removing an object from the current page therefore does not establish erasure from earlier revisions or retained state.

Add a headless tool for Edit::DeleteObjects.
Edit::DeleteObjects is reachable from the user-facing selection-delete path, but crates/automation has no corresponding tool or Automation::call branch. CLI and MCP clients therefore cannot delete a mixed selection of paragraphs, images, and added items as one edit. Existing per-object tools do not provide that operation or its single-undo-step behavior.
Add the ToolDef, handler, and end-to-end automation test for Edit::DeleteObjects, including mixed-target deletion and stale-target refusal.

Apply an open paragraph independently of quick_tool.
If an open paragraph exists, set_option("quick", "hand") can change quick_tool without applying it. A subsequent set_option("tool", "redact") calls leave_edit, but enter_mode skips put_down_edit_text because the quick tool is now Hand. The paragraph remains open after Edit closes, so the tool switch does not commit the user's text. Apply the active view's open paragraph on exit even when another quick tool is selected.

Keep the selection when the engine refuses a delete.
delete calls self.clear() before the edit runs. The engine refuses a delete in these cases:
clipping text
vertical text
a stale target
A refused delete keeps the document and edit_generation unchanged. The user then loses the selection and must rebuild it. prepare already says "A refused edit keeps the generation and the original selection". The delete method breaks that intent.
prepare already clears the selection after a successful edit. A successful delete bumps the generation, pending is None, and the remap in prepare fails. prepare then calls self.clear(). So delete does not need to clear the selection itself.

Heads-up on overlap: #4111 (merged 2026-10-24) added Delete/Backspace for an object selection in Edit text & images, and #4605 (approved) makes select_tool put Edit text & images down when leaving Edit a PDF for another tool from All tools, and turn it on when entering. Your engine-level delete_objects/delete_blocks (removing the strings rather than rewriting the paragraph empty) looks like a better way to delete than #4111's, and could replace its per-kind deletes. Happy to help rebase or coordinate.
Opening Edit a PDF from All tools, Home or the palette showed its panel but
left the Select tool on, so clicking text or an image edited nothing. It now
turns on Edit text & images as the Edit tab does; Back puts it down again.

Keep the paragraph draft when applying it fails.
This takes the editor before apply_edit succeeds and does not populate applied_editor, which the error handler uses to restore a rejected draft. For example, the editor can open text used as a clipping path, but the engine refuses its rewrite. Closing the panel then loses the typed text. Preserve the editor and keep editing active if the apply fails. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Leave Read mode before activating Edit.
When the palette selects edit while mode == Mode::Read, select_tool sets QuickTool::EditText but does not change the mode. Read mode hides the Edit panel and quick toolbar, while the canvas can still route input to the Edit text and image handlers. Switch out of Read mode before activating Edit.

Review comment at @crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs at line 2256:
Update select_tool so selecting EditText while mode is Mode::Read first switches
to the appropriate non-Read mode, then activates QuickTool::EditText; preserve
existing behavior for other modes.

Thanks @simscorpbs. PdfCraft now takes its translations from storytold/craft-i18n (#6055). This PR's catalog rows are in craft-i18n (storytold/craft-i18n#141), with your credit. The code still needs review here: please rebase onto main and drop the crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/*.tsv changes, as those files no longer exist. New strings in code stay in English; translations go to craft-i18n.

What this fixes
Two things in Edit a PDF that a user hit right away: editing could not be left from the panel,
and an object could not be deleted.
Leaving Edit a PDF
Only the mode bar put Edit text & images down (
enter_mode→put_down_edit_text). Every otherway out moved the panel or the tool and left editing on underneath, with every paragraph still
boxed:
modedirectlyenter_modeEditTextunder the new toolselect_tool)put_down_edit_text)A paragraph still open is applied in each case, as switching mode already did.
Entering Edit a PDF from All tools
The other way round: opening Edit a PDF from All tools, Home or the palette (
select_tool("edit"))showed its panel but left the Select tool on, so clicking text or an image edited nothing. It now
turns on Edit text & images as the Edit tab does, and Back puts it down again.
Deleting objects
Objects selected in Edit a PDF (by a paragraph's frame, Shift-click or a marquee) could be moved
but not deleted: no key, no menu, and no engine edit to remove an existing paragraph.
object(s)"), as in Acrobat. A lone selected image keeps its own Delete.
Edit::DeleteObjects { page, objects }mirrorsMoveObjects: targets resolve against theoriginal inventories before any change, and a refusal leaves the document untouched.
pdfcraft_edit::delete_objectsdeletes paragraphs withtext::delete_blocks, then images(last index first) and added items (last first).
delete_blocksturns each text-showing operation of the paragraph into aTJthat moves bythe same advance. The text after it on the same line stays where it was, and the strings leave
the content stream. Hiding them (
3 Tr) would leave the text searchable and copyable, as a badredaction does. Clipping text and vertical text are refused, as in
translate_blocks.Testing
cargo fmt --check,cargo clippy -p pdfcraft-edit -p pdfcraft-engine -p pdfcraft-ui-egui --all-targets -- -D warnings,cargo test -p pdfcraft-edit -p pdfcraft-engine -p pdfcraft-ui-egui(all pass on Windows 11),cargo xtask assets.mixed_object_deletes_are_one_undo_step_and_survive_save_reopen(engine): a native paragraph,an added label and an added image are deleted together; the saved file reopens with none of
them; one undo restores all three; a stale target is refused without a new generation.
delete_removes_the_selected_objects_in_one_step(UI): marquee, Delete; the unselectedparagraph keeps its place; ⌘Z restores the page.
closing_the_edit_panel_leaves_editing(UI): × leaves Edit for All tools with the Select tool;the Select tool puts Edit text & images down.
edit_a_pdf_from_all_tools_turns_on_edit_text_and_images(UI): Edit a PDF from All toolsturns the tool on; Back puts it down.
