Pandoc and File Formats

Deutsch: Pandoc und Dateiformate

AI Studio reads most files by itself: you attach them to a chat, use them in assistants, or add them to data sources. Only HTML files and some exports need Pandoc, a free program for converting documents.

Files AI Studio reads by itself

Kind Formats
Text TXT, Markdown, RTF, and other files that contain plain text
Tables CSV, TSV
Word processing DOCX, ODT
Spreadsheets XLSX, XLSM, XLSB, XLS, ODS, and Excel add-ins
Presentations PPTX, ODP
PDF PDF
LaTeX TEX, BIB, STY, CLS
Source code and configuration for example, C#, Java, Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, C, C++, Go, Rust, Lua, PHP, shell scripts, JSON, XML, YAML, TOML, and INI

"HTML" (HTML, HTM) needs Pandoc.

AI Studio refuses some files:

  • Old Word files (DOC): convert them to DOCX first, for example, with Microsoft Word or LibreOffice.
  • Old PowerPoint files (PPT): convert them to PPTX first.
  • Programs: AI Studio never attaches executable files.

Images

You can attach JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, and TIFF images, if the selected model accepts images. Convert HEIC, AVIF, and SVG images to JPG or PNG first.

Before AI Studio sends an image, it turns it upright, scales it down to at most 2,560 pixels on its longest side, and saves it anew. This also removes metadata, such as the place where a photo was taken. If an image is still too large for the provider, AI Studio reduces its quality and size further, or leaves it out and tells you.

Audio and video

With a transcription provider, AI Studio turns audio and video files into text: audio such as MP3, WAV, AAC, FLAC, OGG, Opus, M4A, AIFF, and CAF, and video such as MP4, MOV, MKV, and WebM. AI Studio prepares the file on your computer and uploads only its audio to your transcription provider. It asks you before it does so.

You choose the transcription provider in "Settings" → "App Options" → "Select a transcription provider"; see Providers and Models.

Exporting answers

Each answer of the AI has a save icon, "Export AI response"; in assistants, it is called "Export result". You can save the answer as:

Format Needs Pandoc
Microsoft Word (.docx) yes
OpenDocument Text (.odt), e.g. LibreOffice yes
LaTeX (.tex) yes
Markdown (.md) no
Webpage (.html) yes

When the answer contains code blocks or tables, you can also save each of them on its own, tables as CSV or TSV. These need no Pandoc.

Why Pandoc doesn't come with AI Studio

Like AI Studio, Pandoc is free of charge. It's open source under the GNU General Public License (GPL), and that license isn't compatible with the license of AI Studio. So AI Studio doesn't ship Pandoc and never installs it without asking you: to use Pandoc, you accept the GPL.

At work, your organization may have accepted the license for all of its employees and installed Pandoc on your computer. AI Studio then finds it and doesn't ask.

Installing Pandoc

When you use a feature that needs Pandoc and it's missing, AI Studio offers to install it. You can also install or update it at any time: open "Information", and click "Install Pandoc" or "Update Pandoc" in the "Versions" section. The line "Installed Pandoc version" shows what you have.

The dialog shows the GPL, and you choose:

  • "Automatic installation": once you accept the GPL, AI Studio downloads the current version of Pandoc and keeps it in its own folder. Your system stays unchanged.
  • "Manual installation": you accept the GPL, download the installer or the archive, and install Pandoc yourself. You can also install Pandoc with a package manager of your operating system.

AI Studio needs Pandoc 3.7.0.2 or newer. A Pandoc that your system already provides works, too, if it's new enough.

On Linux with Flatpak, we offer Pandoc as an extension instead. If you accept the GPL, download it from our release page and install it as described in Installing AI Studio.
