M14: Hebrew (עברית) interface language, the first right-to-left one - #437
Rebased onto current main and pushed b3f0920 (one commit). Main had moved a long way, so this is a rebuild on main's new layout, not just a conflict fix:
Right to left now goes through the egui fork. he.tsv stays in logical order and is never preordered, like ar, ckb and fa; rtl: true gives Hebrew labels the explicit right-to-left direction and epaint reorders each line. The old display-order test is now hebrew_catalog_stays_logical, written like arabic_catalog_stays_logical.
Your Required 1 is resolved by main itself. #1624 merged on Oct 22, and the craft-fonts revision CI and releases now pin (b076417) has Noto Sans Hebrew. Release builds draw Hebrew labels, and hebrew_labels_have_glyphs now actually runs in CI instead of skipping (I ran it locally with that revision: no missing glyphs).
Auto gate (Required 2) is the glyph check from the last round: theme::interface_draws over installed_font_definitions, which now includes #1624's system-hebrew-fallback. draws_counts_every_face_of_the_family still covers the installed-face case.
Hebrew picks up main's picker fallback (english_name → "Hebrew"), the 8 command and All tools labels added since, and the date names.
The signature-font message is now in all 35 catalogs. The 12 catalogs added since then also have it, and ATTRIBUTION.toml notes it as an AI-assisted addition outside Hebrew, following main's convention.
Validation, macOS Apple silicon, with CRAFT_FONTS_DIR at the CI pin b076417:
cargo test -p pdfcraft-ui-egui --lib: 591 passed.
cargo test -p pdfcraft-engine --lib dates: 18 passed.
fmt; clippy -D warnings on ui-egui and engine.
cargo xtask assets, cargo xtask layers, and cargo xtask wasm (31 crates).
Without craft-fonts, about 20 open_worker tests panic on this machine (MissingGlyphPolicy::Panic on "⋯", U+22EF). They don't touch anything this PR changes, and they pass with the CI fonts.
Could you take another look when you have a moment?

New Features
Added Hebrew as a supported interface language, including right-to-left text, translations, plural forms, and date formatting.
Automatic language selection now checks whether the available fonts can display Hebrew and can fall back to another preferred language.
Typed signatures now identify unsupported characters and offer drawing or image upload as alternatives.
Bug Fixes
Hebrew month names now use the appropriate forms when displayed after a day number.

Changes requested: this branch cannot land as-is. It is CONFLICTING and 787 commits behind main, and main has since gained right-to-left infrastructure that this PR re-implements.
Required
Rebase onto current main. Main already has LangInfo::rtl, a catalog put into display order at load (bidi::display_rtl), ar.tsv and i18n::current().rtl(). This PR adds a parallel LangInfo::rtl, Lang::rtl(), Catalog::map_text and bidi::visual_rtl. Rebase onto main's mechanism: register he with rtl: true and use display_rtl. Do not add a second reordering path. visual_rtl differs from display_rtl (placeholders, trailing colon and space handling), so check Hebrew labels against main's rules.
Overlap with open PRs. The typed-text layouters (field_layouter, multiline_field_layouter, styled_layouter, on 37 fields) overlap #2233 (type RTL text in display order). Hebrew font fallback overlaps #1624. Hebrew editing overlaps #2296 and #2652. Please agree the split with those authors so one mechanism lands once. The he.tsv catalog, the Hebrew plural rule and the script_missing guard for typed signatures look independent and worth keeping.
Rebuild the one-face-per-script change in system_fonts.rs and theme.rs on main's current Need / script_fallback structure, which has been refactored since.
Regenerate ATTRIBUTION.toml and ATTRIBUTION.md (cargo xtask assets --write) for he.tsv after the rebase.
Concerns to answer when you rebase
The layouters draw a reordered copy of the buffer while TextEdit keeps its cursor and selection as indices into that galley. Please add a test, or say how it is handled, that caret placement, selection and deletion on mixed Hebrew/Latin text act on the intended characters.
The system-fallback test accepts any installed faces, and on non-macOS hosts it can pass without Hebrew glyphs. State what it proves on Linux and Windows.
What I read (whole diff)
The diff is mostly mechanical call-site wiring, with no panicking paths on input. script_missing caps its scan with take(MAX_SIGNATURE_CHARS + 1).
Validation: I read the diff only. I ran no cargo commands, because the host queue was long and the branch cannot land without a rebase. There is no hosted CI on this head.

Hebrew language registration and date formatting crates/engine/src/dates.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/i18n.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/tests.rs, docs/localization-parity.md, docs/localization.md, ATTRIBUTION.md, ATTRIBUTION.toml
Registers Hebrew as a right-to-left interface language with three plural forms, locale aliases, and Hebrew date names. Tests cover registration, translations, and plural forms. Documentation and attribution records include Hebrew and translation catalog updates.
Adds interface-font glyph checks and uses them during automatic locale resolution. Tests cover font coverage and selection of later preferred languages when Hebrew glyphs are unavailable.
Typed signature character support crates/ui-egui/src/tools/fill_sign.rs, docs/localization.md
Typed signatures with unsupported characters are not ready to apply. The preview is suppressed, and a localized message identifies the first unsupported character and suggests Draw or Image.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to c8ac8
The typed-signature warning now correctly identifies the signature font and offers Draw or Image. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains after normal checks.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to b3f09
The inspected changes do not demonstrate increased access or privileges. They add language choices and strengthen checks against incomplete signature rendering. Previously saved signatures remain outside the new validation, and broader coverage is incomplete.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated scope is a user's interface-language choice, date formatting, and saved signature appearances used in documents. The inspected locale and signature paths do not establish a new cross-service, tenant, credential, or privileged-write capability.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
observed — A pre-existing path remains outside draft readiness: restored nonempty signature text becomes SavedSig::Typed, whose placement and graphic generation do not recheck missing characters. Mixed supported and unsupported text can therefore still produce incomplete outlines. Base comparison confirms that restore, rendering, and placement behavior predates this PR; no new reachability was demonstrated.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Environment, OS, and browser locale values remain language-tag inputs to registered-catalog selection. Automatic paths apply the Hebrew drawability filter, browser scanning remains capped at 32 tags, and the opt-in control-channel language branch retains centralized preference validation.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — script_missing returns None both for complete coverage and if its primary font cannot be parsed. This ambiguity is unchanged from the base. The inspected font inputs are compiled-in, unchanged assets, and downstream signature creation rejects empty outlines; attacker-controlled font substitution or a newly introduced failure exposure was not established.

Thanks for the thorough review. I rebuilt the branch on current main (force-pushed; the old head is kept as feat/hebrew-interface-v1 on my fork).
Rebased onto main's mechanism. he is registered with rtl: true and goes through bidi::display_rtl. My Lang::rtl, Catalog::map_text and bidi::visual_rtl are gone. Hebrew labels are checked against main's rules in hebrew_lookups_are_in_display_order (ellipsis, Latin names, placeholders, menu_label).
Overlap. I dropped the parts other PRs own: the typed-text layouters (#2233), the Hebrew system fallback face (#1624) and editing (#2296, #2652). What's left is what you marked independent: he.tsv, the Hebrew plural rule, he/iw locale matching, and the typed-signature guard. The guard is now in the Fill & Sign pad and reuses main's script_missing. I also added Hebrew date names, because date_languages_are_the_interface_languages requires them.
system_fonts.rs / theme.rs: not rebuilt here. #1624 already adds a Hebrew probe on main's Need / script_fallback structure, so I'm deferring to it rather than adding a second version.
ATTRIBUTION regenerated with cargo xtask assets --write; cargo xtask assets passes.
Concerns: both were about code that's no longer in this PR (the layouters' caret/selection mapping, and the multi-face fallback test), so they now belong to #2233 and #1624.
Validation: fmt, clippy -D warnings on ui-egui and engine, cargo test -p pdfcraft-ui-egui --lib (445 passed), engine date tests, xtask layers and xtask assets. Details are in the updated description.

Changes requested. The rebuild resolves everything I asked for on Oct 17. One problem is left: until #1624 lands, this PR ships a Hebrew option that release builds can't draw, and the new Auto gate checks the wrong thing.
Done. The branch is 0 commits behind main. he is registered with rtl: true (i18n/mod.rs:224) and goes through bidi::display_rtl. Lang::rtl, map_text and visual_rtl are gone, and hebrew_lookups_are_in_display_order checks the ellipsis, Latin names, placeholders and menu_label against main's rules.
Done. The layouters, the installed fallback face and the editing changes are dropped. What's left is he.tsv, the plural rule, he/iw matching, the Hebrew date names and the typed-signature guard.
Deferring to #1624 is fine as a split. #1624 adds exactly that hebrew_fallback on main's script_fallback structure. See below for what this PR still depends on from it.
Done. cargo xtask assets passes with the new he.tsv entry.
The two concerns
Caret, selection and deletion on a reordered galley: that hand-off is fair. This PR no longer touches any layouter, so typed Hebrew behaves exactly as typed Arabic does on main.
The multi-face fallback test belongs to #1624, so that hand-off is fair too. The user-visible result of #1624 not being merged is still in this PR, though:
Required
The Hebrew option draws as boxes on macOS release builds. The pinned craft-fonts revision (3d9ab3a1, release.yml) has no Hebr face, and craft-fonts main has none either. On macOS the general installed fallback is SF Arabic, then Geeza Pro, then Arial (system_fonts.rs:242). The first one that has alef gets loaded, and SF Arabic has no Hebrew. So in every macOS release, choosing עברית in Preferences, or as the date language (dates.rs:405), turns the interface into replacement boxes, and the picker entry is boxes too. The PR description and docs/localization.md:56 say so themselves. Please make this PR depend on #1624 (or on a craft-fonts Hebr face) and land after it. Until then, "choosing Hebrew in Preferences still works" (i18n/mod.rs:357, :3435) isn't true on macOS.
The Auto gate tests the craft-fonts face, not whether Hebrew can be drawn (i18n/mod.rs:358-359). It's wrong in both directions:
Today it skips Hebrew where the interface already draws it. On Windows the general fallback is segoeui.ttf (system_fonts.rs:240), which has Hebrew. On my Linux machine, theme::installed_font_definitions(CjkPreference::Default) has glyphs for every letter of "קובץ עריכה עברית" through the installed fallback, but auto_can_draw(he) is false. With only the embedded faces, 4 of 4 letters of "קובץ" are missing.
After #1624, Auto would still pass over Hebrew on every Mac with SF Hebrew or Arial Hebrew, because only the craft-fonts check counts.
Please base the gate on what the interface fonts can actually draw, for example the craft-fonts face or #1624's system_fonts::hebrew_fallback() (or a glyph check on the installed definitions, as hebrew_labels_have_glyphs does). Then extend auto_picks_hebrew_only_with_a_hebrew_face to cover the installed-face case.
Should fix (not blocking on its own)
CodeRabbit's minor finding is valid (fill_sign.rs:830). The pad now refuses every Hebrew, Arabic and Japanese typed name in all 24 languages, and the only explanation it shows is "The PDF text fonts can't draw “נ” (U+05E0). Choose supported text." That message blames the wrong font and doesn't say what to do. Automation already has a signature-specific wording for the same script_missing check: "the signature script font can't draw … type it in Latin, Cyrillic or Greek letters, or pass graphic.image instead" (automation/src/signing.rs:287-291). The pad should say the same, pointing to Draw or Image. A new literal needs catalog entries, so it isn't quite a quick win, but this is the message Hebrew users will hit first.
What's good
The plural rule matches CLDR he for integers. iw is mapped only as a fallback candidate, and the date names, including the ב form after a day number, are covered by tests.
The typed-signature guard reuses main's script_missing, which depends only on Dancing Script and Inter, so it behaves the same in every build. I reverted the guard and typed_names_the_script_font_lacks_are_not_ready failed on "נטלי זכריה". I reverted the Auto gate and auto_picks_hebrew_only_with_a_hebrew_face failed (first_supported("iw-IL\r\nen-US") returned he instead of en). Both tests really guard what they claim.
Validation
I ran cargo xtask ci on e042a6f (already on current main) in a fresh worktree with its own target directory. All 8 steps passed, including the wasm check on 31 crates and assets. deny was skipped because cargo-deny isn't installed here.
My build has no craft-fonts, so hebrew_labels_have_glyphs skipped, as it will in hosted CI.
I didn't run macOS or Windows. The macOS and Windows statements above come from the candidate lists in system_fonts.rs.
Hosted CI on this head is waiting for maintainer approval (action_required), so there's no CI failure to diagnose.
Thanks. Rebased onto main again (it had moved 202 commits) and pushed a1f78ed.
Required 1, depends on #1624. Agreed. This PR now depends on #1624 and should land after it (or after a craft-fonts Hebr face). The description says so, and docs/localization.md now explains why: Segoe UI on Windows already has Hebrew, but on macOS the labels are boxes until then. I also removed the "choosing Hebrew in Preferences still works" wording. The code comment, the test message and the docs now say only that an explicit choice selects Hebrew, whatever the machine can draw.
Required 2, the Auto gate. Now based on what the interface fonts actually draw. auto_can_draw asks theme::interface_draws(HEBREW_LETTERS). That checks the proportional family of installed_font_definitions(CjkPreference::Default) (embedded faces, craft-fonts and the installed fallbacks) with skrifa's charmap, for every Hebrew letter including final forms, once per process. So it accepts Segoe UI on Windows and your Linux fallback today, and #1624's face once it lands, with no change here.
auto_picks_hebrew_only_where_the_interface_draws_it compares Auto against interface_draws.
The new theme::tests::draws_counts_every_face_of_the_family covers the installed-face case: the embedded faces alone don't draw Hebrew without craft-fonts Hebr, and the same definitions with an installed Hebrew face added do (SF Hebrew or Arial Hebrew on macOS, Segoe UI on Windows, Noto Sans Hebrew or DejaVu Sans on Linux; skips if none is installed). On my Mac it ran with SF Hebrew.
Should fix, the signature message. Done. The pad now says "The signature font can't draw “{c}” ({code}). Type it in Latin, Cyrillic or Greek letters, or use Draw or Image.", matching the automation tool's advice. The label is in all 23 catalogs, written with each catalog's own words for the Draw and Image tabs. The non-Hebrew ones are AI-assisted translations and haven't had a native speaker's review. typed_names_the_script_font_lacks_are_not_ready checks the wording.
Validation (macOS, Apple silicon): cargo test -p pdfcraft-ui-egui --lib 470 passed, fmt, clippy -D warnings on ui-egui, xtask assets (23 catalog hashes updated) and xtask layers. I couldn't run the wasm check here (no wasm target installed). The new check only calls installed_font_definitions, which already builds the embedded set on wasm.
Rebuilt on current main, which now draws right-to-left text in its egui fork:
the Hebrew catalog stays in logical (typing) order, `rtl: true` selects the
explicit right-to-left direction, and epaint reorders each line, as for
Arabic, Kurdish and Persian.
- he.tsv: 474 entries (menus, every registered command, All tools,
Preferences, Fill & Sign, stamps, and the labels every catalog carries).
- `plural_hebrew` (CLDR one, two, other); `he`, `he-IL` and the legacy `iw`
code resolve to Hebrew; "Hebrew" as the picker's English fallback name.
- Hebrew date names, with ב before a month after a day number ("7 במרץ").
- Auto picks Hebrew only where the interface faces draw every Hebrew letter
(`theme::interface_draws`: embedded, craft-fonts and installed fallback
faces), and otherwise the next preferred language.
- Fill & Sign: a typed signature the script font and its Inter fallback
can't draw keeps Apply off and says the signature font can't draw that
character, pointing to Draw or Image. The label is in all 35 catalogs
(AI-assisted outside Hebrew, noted in ATTRIBUTION.toml).

CodeRabbit on b3f0920: `d mmm yyyy` gave "7 מרץ 2026" without the ב, and
`mmmm d, yyyy` gave "במרץ 7, 2026" with it. `format_day` now takes a
language's after-a-day form only for a month that comes after a `d`/`dd`
in the pattern, as `DateLanguage::months_with_day` already says, and the new
optional `months_short_with_day` gives Hebrew its abbreviated form ("7 במרץ",
"7 בינו׳"). A month before the day number keeps the plain name in every

Rebased onto current main and pushed b3f0920 (one commit). Main had moved a long way, so this is a rebuild on main's new layout, not just a conflict fix:
Right to left now goes through the egui fork.he.tsv stays in logical order and is never preordered, like ar, ckb and fa; rtl: true gives Hebrew labels the explicit right-to-left direction and epaint reorders each line. The old display-order test is now hebrew_catalog_stays_logical, written like arabic_catalog_stays_logical.
Your Required 1 is resolved by main itself.Hebrew file names: draw them with an installed Hebrew face when the build has none #1624 merged on Oct 22, and the craft-fonts revision CI and releases now pin (b076417) has Noto Sans Hebrew. Release builds draw Hebrew labels, and hebrew_labels_have_glyphs now actually runs in CI instead of skipping (I ran it locally with that revision: no missing glyphs).
Without craft-fonts, about 20 open_worker tests panic on this machine (MissingGlyphPolicy::Panic on "⋯", U+22EF). They don't touch anything this PR changes, and they pass with the CI fonts.
Since then, c8ac877 fixes CodeRabbit's date note: the Hebrew ב now goes only before a month that follows the day number, abbreviated months too ("7 במרץ", but "מרץ 7").

Auto gate (Required 2) is the glyph check from the last round: theme::interface_draws over installed_font_definitions, which now includes #1624's system-hebrew-fallback. draws_counts_every_face_of_the_family still covers the installed-face case.
