What this changes

Adds Dhivehi (dv, ދިވެހި) as an interface and date language.

  • Catalog: crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/dv.tsv has 2,674 entries in Thaana script, covering every (context, English) key of the other bundled catalogs (commands, menus, All tools, dialogs, @plural, @id, and the calendar/certificate/key contexts). Western digits; product and format names stay in Latin.
  • Right to left: registered with rtl: true, so entries are put into display order at load (bidi::display_rtl), the same way Arabic is. Thaana (U+0780–07BF) already falls in bidi::is_rtl_script's range. Every dv-* locale resolves to it.
  • Plurals: plural_none. A noun after a numeral keeps its form, so @plural rows have one form.
  • Dates: DATE_LANGUAGES gains the Dhivehi Gregorian month and weekday names (ހޮނިހިރު, 7 މާޗް 2026), which match the catalog's calendar rows.
  • Font: new pdfcraft_fonts::ui_thaana_fonts() (craft-fonts Thaa faces). The face joins the interface fallback stack after Thai, and build.rs keeps it in the wasm build (Noto Sans Thaana is small).
  • Docs/parity: a Dhivehi section in docs/localization.md, a row and revision in docs/localization-parity.md, notes and evidence in misc.localization, and a ROADMAP progress line.

How you verified it

  • cargo fmt --check
  • clippy with -D warnings on the crates I changed (pdfcraft-ui-egui, pdfcraft-engine, pdfcraft-fonts, --all-targets, with CRAFT_FONTS_DIR)
  • tests pass on the crates I changed (cargo test -p pdfcraft-ui-egui -p pdfcraft-engine -p pdfcraft-fonts, with CRAFT_FONTS_DIR set to a craft-fonts checkout that has Noto Sans Thaana)
  • cargo xtask layers and cargo xtask assets

New tests in i18n/mod.rs: dhivehi_is_registered_and_persists, dhivehi_lookups_are_in_display_order, dhivehi_plurals_have_one_form, dhivehi_covers_commands_and_catalogue, dhivehi_covers_ui_literals, dhivehi_covers_bundled_catalog_keys, dhivehi_calendar_matches_the_date_language, and dhivehi_labels_have_glyphs. The glyph test caught a ▸ that no interface face draws, so the catalog writes > there, as Arabic does. The Dhivehi date is pinned in names_follow_the_date_language. arabic_is_registered_and_persists now expects two RTL languages, and appearance_labels_are_translated_or_all_english lists dv with the non-WinAnsi languages. A headless shot --language dv render of Home showed Thaana labels drawn right to left with Latin names in place.

Never-crash

  • No new unwrap/expect/panic!/unreachable!/todo! outside tests
  • No indexing or slicing with input-derived positions
  • No unsafe
  • Any crash this fixes has a small synthetic regression test (n/a)

Provenance

  • No asset from an Adobe product
  • No font files committed here. The Thaana face is Noto Sans Thaana (OFL-1.1) and comes from craft-fonts.
  • No GPL/AGPL code copied in
  • Behaviour comes from the existing Arabic RTL path. Translations are written from the meaning of the English text, without consulting any other product's string tables.
  • Every new asset has an ATTRIBUTION.toml entry (dv.tsv, kind = "translation") and cargo xtask assets passes

Security

  • --root confinement unchanged
  • MCP and the control channel unchanged
  • No new outbound network access

Parity and reach

  • parity/acrobat-features.toml updated (misc.localization notes and evidence; the language stays partial)
  • Reachable through the control channel like every language (ui.set language dv)
  • Docs updated

Anything a reviewer should look at first

  • Translation quality: the catalog was written with AI assistance and has not been reviewed by a native Dhivehi speaker yet. The ATTRIBUTION entry and docs say so. Terms most worth checking: Odd/Even pages (އެއްކަލަ / ދެކަލަ), certificate fields, and line-cap and arrow names.
  • craft-fonts: the craft-fonts revision pinned for CI and releases (3d9ab3a…) has no Thaa face. Noto Sans Thaana is being added to craft-fonts separately. Until that lands and the pin is bumped, release builds show Dhivehi labels as replacement boxes (the glyph test skips without the face, like the Telugu one).
  • Dhivehi has the same RTL limits as Arabic: the layout isn't mirrored, wrapped paragraphs break at the wrong end, and typed text runs left to right. Fill & Sign refuses Dhivehi month and weekday names (it accepts WinAnsi only), and Add text can't write Thaana into a PDF yet.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added Dhivehi as a selectable, right-to-left interface language, with translated interface text and Dhivehi calendar names.
    • Added Thaana font support for displaying Dhivehi text where the required font is available.
  • Documentation
    • Updated localization guides and language coverage information to reflect Dhivehi’s translation status and current feature limitations.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Corrected the expected fallback behavior for Kazakh appearance labels.

Register Dhivehi (`dv`, every `dv-*` locale) as a right-to-left interface
language with a 2,674-entry Thaana catalog covering every key of the other
bundled catalogs. Entries are in typing order and put into display order at
load like Arabic; one plural form (`plural_none`). Dates use the Dhivehi
names of the Gregorian months and weekdays.

Interface text draws with the craft-fonts `Thaa` face (Noto Sans Thaana),
added to the font fallback stack and kept in the web build. The release-pinned
craft-fonts revision has no Thaana face yet.

The catalog is clean-room and AI-assisted; native-speaker review is
outstanding. Tests cover registration, persistence, display order, plurals,
commands, UI literals, bundled keys, the calendar and glyph coverage.

📝 Walkthrough

Adds Dhivehi (dv) as an RTL interface and date language. The changes add Dhivehi catalog registration and tests, Dhivehi date names, Thaana font selection and fallback support, and related attribution and localization documentation.

Changes: Dhivehi localization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Register Dhivehi and its catalog
crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/mod.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/dv.tsv, crates/engine/src/dates.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/sign_ui.rs
The language registry adds Dhivehi with RTL display and a single plural form. Date names and tests cover locale resolution, translation display, catalog coverage, and date formatting.
Add Thaana font support
crates/fonts/*, crates/ui-egui/src/theme.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/mod.rs
Font selection and the UI fallback chain include Thaana faces. The wasm build retains fonts that cover Thaa, and a test checks glyph coverage when a Thaana face is available.
Record Dhivehi localization details
ATTRIBUTION.md, ATTRIBUTION.toml, ROADMAP.md, docs/localization*.md, parity/acrobat-features.toml
Attribution and localization records document the catalog, its review status, language coverage, and font availability.

Possibly related PRs

  • storytold/pdfcraft#437: Adds Hebrew through the RTL catalog path and includes display-order tests, which are also extended for Dhivehi.

Suggested reviewers: echelon, duydev, puemmth

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to fadf9

Dhivehi is now picked automatically for Maldivian browser locales, but released builds do not include a Thaana font, so the interface for those users can show replacement boxes instead of readable text. Update the font pin, or avoid selecting Dhivehi automatically until the font ships, before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to fadf9

The reviewed language-selection and date-output paths retain their existing validation and security controls. However, Dhivehi can be selected without the font needed to display it, and the documented release configuration does not yet supply that font. This limits rollout readiness rather than demonstrating a new security vulnerability.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure is language-dependent UI rendering and localized date output for the affected application or session. The inspected changes do not establish additional tenant, service, credential, or authorization scope. Missing-font rendering is a deployment compatibility limitation, not a demonstrated privilege or trust-boundary bypass.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The automation date-stamping path still validates the requested language and uses today_text_for_pdf before placing PDF text. The existing encoding check rejects unsupported named Dhivehi dates; registering the language does not bypass this sink restriction.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Catalog ownership and initialization remain unchanged: each language owns a OnceLock catalog, initialization applies RTL conversion once, and missing translations fall back to their English source. This fallback handles missing translations, not missing font glyphs.

Update the release craft-fonts pin before enabling Dhivehi Auto resolution.

The release pin 3d9ab3a132ed0eff457e424226a435a901da30d3 has no Thaa face, so ui_thaana_fonts() is empty. Auto maps dv-MV to dv without checking font availability. The web fallback stack has no Thaana coverage, so Dhivehi labels can render as replacement boxes for users whose browser locale is dv-MV. Bump the pin to a revision whose manifest contains a Thaa face before merging.

face before enabling Dhivehi Auto resolution through the dv LangInfo entry, so
ui_thaana_fonts() can provide Thaana coverage.
