Summary

Adds complete clean-room Hebrew (he / עברית) UI localization and Hebrew OCR support:

  1. Complete Hebrew UI Catalog (crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/he.tsv):

    • Translates all 2,675 UI, command, dialog, tool, and status strings (including @id and @plural entries with plural_one_other).
    • Registers he (עברית, rtl: true, plural_one_other) in crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/mod.rs, including legacy iw / iw-IL locale tag normalization.
    • Adds he (עברית) month and weekday names to crates/engine/src/dates.rs (DATE_LANGUAGES).
    • Adds runtime system Hebrew font fallback (crates/ui-egui/src/system_fonts.rs and crates/ui-egui/src/theme.rs) respecting PDFCRAFT_SYSTEM_FONTS=0 for clean-room screenshot builds.
    • Records crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/he.tsv in ATTRIBUTION.toml and regenerates ATTRIBUTION.md via cargo xtask assets --write.
  2. Hebrew & RTL Unicode OCR Support (crates/ocr, crates/edit, crates/engine):

    • Adds ("he", "Hebrew") to pdfcraft_ocr::LANGUAGES and defaults the OCR dialog language to "he" when the active UI language is "he".
    • Adds Ocr::recognize_lang with Tesseract (heb+eng) recognition support for Hebrew pages (including multi-PSM retry for sparse layouts and automatic discovery of portable/system Tesseract installations and models/tessdata).
    • Extends pdfcraft_ocr::text_layer and pdfcraft_edit::add_resources with an /PCOCR Type0 (Identity-H, CIDFontType2 with DW 500, and ToUnicode CMap) invisible text font resource for words outside WinAnsiEncoding, ordering RTL words and characters in visual left-to-right order so both text search/extraction (reverse_rtl) and Edit Text (bidi::to_logical) reconstruct full Hebrew lines in logical order.

Verification

  • cargo xtask assets
  • cargo test -p pdfcraft-ui-egui --lib i18n::tests
  • cargo test -p pdfcraft-ui-egui --lib system_fonts::tests
  • cargo test -p pdfcraft-engine --lib dates::tests
  • cargo test -p pdfcraft-ocr
  • cargo test -p pdfcraft-engine --test ocr_edit

Summary by CodeRabbit

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request adds Hebrew OCR and RTL PDF text handling, registers Hebrew for interface localization and date formatting, and adds related tests, documentation, and attribution. It also changes the Nix and cargo-deny CI workflows and removes the SonarCloud workflow.

Changes: Hebrew support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Hebrew OCR recognition
crates/ocr/src/lib.rs, crates/engine/src/ocr.rs
OCR accepts a language code. Hebrew recognition uses Tesseract with heb+eng; other languages use the existing bundled OCR engine. OcrJob passes its configured language to OCR.
RTL PDF text output
crates/ocr/src/lib.rs, crates/edit/src/lib.rs, crates/engine/tests/it/ocr_edit.rs
The text layer reorders RTL text and uses Unicode /PCOCR encoding when needed. PDF resource registration creates the required Type0 font and ToUnicode CMap if the page does not already have /PCOCR. The integration test checks logical-order extraction and searchability.
Hebrew language and date support
crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/mod.rs, crates/engine/src/dates.rs
The language registry and date formatting include Hebrew. Legacy iw locale tags resolve to Hebrew. Tests cover catalog entries, locale resolution, and Hebrew date formatting.
Locale-based OCR language selection
crates/ui-egui/src/ocr_ui.rs
The OCR dialog follows the UI locale until a user selects a language.
Hebrew catalog records and documentation
ATTRIBUTION.md, ATTRIBUTION.toml, contributors/people.toml, docs/localization.md, docs/localization-parity.md
The documentation and attribution records describe the Hebrew catalog and its use. The contributor registry adds a contributor entry.

CI workflow changes

Layer / File(s) Summary
Workflow execution and action references
.github/workflows/nix.yml, .github/workflows/ci.yml, .github/workflows/sonarcloud.yml
The Nix workflow now runs a local conditional flake check. The cargo-deny action reference changes to @v2, and the SonarCloud workflow is deleted.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 9899b

Hebrew OCR text may not be searchable in PDFs that already define an incompatible font. Correct the font handling and abbreviated date output, and confirm the intended CI scanning and action-pinning changes before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 9899b

The main security regression is that CI now executes a mutable third-party action tag instead of a fixed revision. The configured code-analysis workflow is also removed. Hebrew OCR introduces a local process boundary, but the inspected flow does not establish document-controlled command execution or additional privileges.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · observed: The dependency-check job replaces an immutable action revision with the mutable v2 tag. Control of that upstream tag can therefore change code executed by subsequent CI runs without a repository change, weakening runner and dependency-check integrity.
  • Low · security · inferred: Deleting the repository's SonarCloud workflow removes its configured analysis invocation for pull requests and main-branch pushes. Replacement analysis outside the repository is not established, leaving continuity and ownership of this control unresolved.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated CI exposure is the dependency-check job's runner, checkout, and check results. Exploitation requires control of the upstream action reference or its resolved code; ordinary document input does not grant that control. Additional repository-write, release, or organization-wide authority is not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The retained security finding is introduced by this PR: the base pins cargo-deny-action to a full commit, while the head uses v2. The earlier source inspection found no local Actions lockfile covering it. There is no evidence of an actual upstream compromise.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Document-derived pixels cross into an external executable through stdin. Executable and model selection come from local environment and installation paths, not recognized document text. Structured Command arguments avoid a shell interpretation step, but the launch inherits the surrounding process environment.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Cancellation is checked between pages; the new child-process call writes input and waits without an explicit timeout or cancellation handle. Completed OCR still applies using DocId and numeric page indices without a document-generation token. Direct base comparison establishes that this completion model predates the PR, so it is not treated as a newly introduced identity failure.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Preserve immutable action identity and explicitly bound dependency-check permissions. For external OCR, consider job-owned cancellation, execution and output budgets, and trusted executable/model locations to contain stalled or compromised child processes.

preserving user-selected OCR languages when the UI language changes.

Restore the Unicode characters in the attribution source.

These values contain mojibake: ֲ§ replaces §, ֳ© replaces é, and Sֳ¸rensen replaces Sørensen. The generated ATTRIBUTION.md repeats these incorrect references and author names.

Correct ATTRIBUTION.toml, then run cargo xtask assets --write. Do not edit ATTRIBUTION.md by hand.

Regenerate contributor metadata for ronnieba.

crates/ui-egui/build.rs processes only rows from contributors/contributors.json. It requires people_entry = true before sync_github_name = true can select github_name. The checked-in JSON has no ronnieba row, so this entry does not add the contributor's public GitHub name to generated UI data. Regenerate contributors/contributors.json with the matching verified contributor row.

(Note: .github/workflows/\ in the merge commit was kept at the base tree only because my GitHub CLI token lacked the \workflow\ OAuth scope when pushing.)

Do not reuse an unvalidated /PCOCR resource.

Page::dict includes inherited resources. AddOcrText writes UTF-16BE hex strings with /PCOCR 1 Tf. The current key-only check can retain an existing Type1 /PCOCR, or a Type0 font without /ToUnicode. The OCR text can then render incorrectly and cannot be searched or extracted correctly.

Validate the existing font before reuse. At minimum, reject an incompatible collision before appending the OCR stream. A unique resource name is another safe option if the text layer emits that name.

Before appending OCR text, validate any existing /PCOCR resource in the
`Page::dict` resource flow: reuse it only if it is a Type0 font with Identity-H
encoding, descendant fonts, and a ToUnicode map; otherwise reject the collision.
Preserve creation of the generated font when /PCOCR is absent.

Use day-specific forms for abbreviated Hebrew months.

When a date format contains d or dd with mmm, format_day selects months_short without the ב prefix. The new test consequently expects 14 נוב׳, although the corresponding abbreviated date form is 14 בנוב׳. Add day-specific abbreviated forms and update the assertion at Line 1024. CLDR shows the same distinction for ינו׳ and בינו׳. (unicode.org)

Update the Hebrew month abbreviations used by format_day so formats combining d

Update: As @radicaldrew has kindly extracted the Hebrew UI localization and date catalog into #4405 (M14), this PR (#3743) complements it by focusing on the Hebrew OCR engine support via Tesseract and RTL PDF text layer generation (/PCOCR Type0 font with logical-order reversal for text extraction/search).
