What this changes

Fixes #4177.

Builds on #4178 and #4179: this branch contains their commits. Review the last two commits; once those PRs merge, this rebases to just these two.

With text selected, Format text's alignment now applies to the lines the selection touches; with only the caret, to the whole paragraph or box, as before. A line is the text between line breaks: a line typed with Enter in added text, or a source row of an edited paragraph (rows are already hard breaks in the paragraph editor).

Engine (pdfcraft-edit)

  • paragraph_align: the shared rules (which lines a selection touches, setting and tidying per-line alignments, carrying them through typing with remap), unit-tested.
  • Added text: AddedText::aligns (None follows align), written to /PCAdded as /Aligns (an array of codes, null for a line that follows /Align; capped at the text's line count on read). Each line is placed by its own alignment; a justified line's last row is no longer stretched.
  • Edited paragraphs: BlockStyle::aligns, applied per row by both the single-style rewrite and the styled-region rewrite.
  • A one-row paragraph given an alignment is laid out across the column of text it sits in (alignment_frame), or its own box when no column holds it. Before, a lone row was aligned in its own box, so Left changed nothing; and since a single row grows to the page's margin, each Centre moved it further right. This matters here because centring one line of a paragraph moves it out of the paragraph's rows on the next read.

UI

Automation: aligns (array of left/center/right/justify/null, at most 4096) on page_add_text, content_update and text_edit. align alone on added text is the whole box again.

Parity: edit.paragraph-alignment lists the new evidence and says what's still missing (below).

Not covered:

How it was verified

  • cargo fmt --check
  • clippy with -D warnings on pdfcraft-edit, pdfcraft-engine, pdfcraft-automation, pdfcraft-ui-egui, all targets
  • cargo test on those four crates: all pass
  • cargo xtask layers, cargo xtask assets, cargo xtask parity

New tests, each seen failing with its part of the change disabled:

  • pdfcraft-edit: one_row_of_a_paragraph_takes_its_own_alignment, one_row_of_a_styled_region_takes_its_own_alignment, added_text_paragraphs_keep_their_own_alignments (layout and save/reopen), a_lone_row_aligns_across_the_column_it_sits_in (Left returns it, Centre twice stays put, Right), and paragraph_align unit tests.
  • pdfcraft-ui-egui (real shell, pointer clicks on Format text): aligning_a_selected_row_aligns_only_that_row_and_undo_puts_it_back, aligning_a_selected_line_of_added_text_aligns_only_that_line, and the_text_editor_aligns_a_narrow_box_whose_lines_share_an_alignment (a box narrower than the editor keeps the edge its lines share).
  • pdfcraft-automation: added_text_lines_take_their_own_alignments, and text_edit_aligns_alone_aligns_the_paragraphs_rows (aligns without text keeps the paragraph's rows).

Also checked by hand on Windows 11 with a typical "Sample PDF" page (title, subtitle, justified body): centre the title line, Left, Centre twice, highlight and Left, then Ctrl+Z through each step.

Never-crash

  • No new unwrap/expect/panic!/unreachable!/todo! outside tests
  • No indexing or slicing with input-derived positions (paragraph lookups by get; byte positions counted, never sliced)
  • /Aligns and aligns are capped (line count; 4096)
  • No unsafe

Provenance

  • No assets, no fonts, no copied code; behaviour from the spec and black-box use

Security

  • No new paths; --root confinement unchanged; no MCP, control channel or network change

Parity and reach

  • parity/acrobat-features.toml (edit.paragraph-alignment) updated, with what's missing
  • Reachable headlessly (aligns on three tools)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Set left, center, right, or justified alignment for selected paragraphs or individual lines. Unspecified paragraphs follow the overall text alignment.
    • Apply per-line alignment to existing and added text, with alignment preserved as text is edited or lines are restored.
    • Automation tools support per-line alignment settings.
    • Align eligible single-row text to its inferred column.
  • Improvements
    • Undo and Redo handle typing in open text editors before document history, keeping typing history separate across documents and tabs.
    • Text selections remain in place while formatting, and unchanged text edits do not create unnecessary changes.

Walkthrough

Text rows now support individual alignment in added text and edited paragraphs. Formatting controls can apply alignment to selected rows. Text editors track alignment as text changes and handle typing Undo and Redo separately from document history.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 5a86f

Redo works for open text boxes, but a justified paragraph followed by another paragraph can render its final line with incorrect spacing. This is a bounded issue to fix or accept before merging.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 5a86f

The alignment and typing-history changes preserve the editing permissions and document-isolation controls examined. No introduced security issue was established, but coverage is not complete enough to conclude minimal risk.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected new input reaches existing document-layout and editing paths. For paragraph rewriting, neighboring blocks contribute geometry only; the write target remains the selected paragraph on the requested page. No expansion to a cross-document mutation target was established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Alignment edits continue through existing read-only and PDF permission enforcement. Paragraph commits retain document-freshness validation and clipping/editability checks; preview rewriting uses a cloned document. The flagged rewrite helper is crate-private rather than a newly exposed external entrypoint.
  • observed — Shared text-input state is separated by document identity and baseline text. A returning document restores only its own saved state when that baseline matches; otherwise fresh state is installed. Paragraph and added-text editors use distinct input IDs.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Document close removes the document view and session document. Newly opened documents receive increasing, non-reused IDs, preventing leftover temporary typing state from being reassigned to a later document. Explicit purging of that temporary state on close was not established.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "M7: align the selected lines of a paragraph or text box on their own" matches the main change: alignment buttons with a selection now apply only to the lines the selection touches, while a caret-only action still applies to the whole paragraph or box. The changeset covers the engine (paragraph_align, AddedText::aligns, BlockStyle::aligns, alignment_frame), the UI editors and format panel, and the automation aligns argument. The "M7:" prefix is a milestone tag rather than a descriptive term, but the rest of the title is specific.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template's main sections: What this changes, How it was verified (with the checklist items for fmt, clippy, tests, and xtask), Never-crash, Provenance, Security, and Parity and reach. It explains the behaviour change, the engine, UI, and automation parts, and known limitations, and it names new regression tests. The template's optional "Anything a reviewer should look at first" section is absent. Some Never-crash and Security checklist items are ticked without per-item detail. The Provenance and Security sections are brief. These gaps are non-critical, so the description is mostly complete.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Active direct issue #4177 requires alignment of only touched lines for a selection and whole-paragraph or whole-box alignment for a caret-only action. The changes implement selection mapping in paragraph_align, per-line alignment in added text and edited paragraphs, alignment controls in both editors, and preservation of the added-text editor while formatting. Engine, UI, and automation tests cover these behaviors.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain connected to #4177. Serialization, layout, automation, selection and history handling, regression tests, and parity documentation support per-line alignment or editor stability during formatting. No unrelated change is demonstrated by the available evidence.

Preserve unchanged added-text drafts before trimming

An existing added-text item with trailing whitespace can produce UpdateContent even when its draft was not changed. finish trims the draft before comparing it with the stored item. close_text_editors then applies that edit, which clears document Redo before history_step calls session.redo. Preserve the no-op case before trimming.

🟡 Minor · Preserve the edit boundary when remapping duplicate paragraphs. · paragraph_align.rs:67-86

crates/edit/src/paragraph_align.rs:67-86
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve the edit boundary when remapping duplicate paragraphs.

When C\n is inserted before an existing final C, remap treats the existing C as the unchanged prefix and assigns the inserted paragraph the existing C alignment. For A\nB\nC with [Some(Center), Some(Right), Some(Left)], it returns [Some(Center), Some(Right), Some(Left), Some(Left)]. The inserted paragraph should inherit B's Right alignment, while the existing C keeps Left.

Preserve the actual insertion or replacement boundary when remapping. The current callers pass only the old and new strings, so this case can occur through added-text editing or content_update. The renderer then uses the wrong alignment for the inserted paragraph.

🟡 Minor · Apply justification spacing to rewritten selected rows. · text_regions.rs:903-915

crates/edit/src/text_regions.rs:903-915
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Apply justification spacing to rewritten selected rows.

When text_edit supplies a selected row with aligns: ["justify", ...], rewrite_styled_block resolves that row to Align::Justify. The placement match then uses _ => 0.0, and the emitted text keeps its original word spacing. A non-final justified row therefore starts at the left edge without filling the available width.

Apply paragraph-aware per-space justification to both normal and shaped rewritten text. Keep the final wrapped row of each source line left-aligned. The documented persistence limitation concerns later rewrites, not the current edit.

Preserve local Undo before routing to document history.

When an added-text draft is restored to its baseline after a stabilized edit, page_typing_unapplied() becomes false even though egui still has local Undo history. Ctrl/Cmd-Z then enters document edit.undo, closes the editor, and undoes document history instead of the local edit. Check local Undo availability before setting page_box.

On the two outside-diff findings from CodeRabbit's latest reviews:

  • Unchanged added-text drafts with trailing whitespace (editing.rs / finish): confirmed and fixed in a12917f (and in fix(ui): Ctrl+Z in an open paragraph undoes the document, not stale text #4179 as 6c8fd74, where that code comes from). A box that matches its item now finishes as no edit, checked before trimming, so it can't clear the document's Redo. New test content::redo_with_an_unchanged_box_open_redoes_the_document fails without it.
  • remap with duplicate paragraphs: not changed. With only the old and new text, inserting C before an identical final C is the same diff as adding it after, and remap takes the line above for inserted lines (Enter at the end of a line, the common case). Telling them apart needs the edit position, which callers don't have; the result is one valid reading, not a wrong one.

On the three outside-diff findings in CodeRabbit's latest review:

  • Justify a selected row in rewrite_styled_block: not changed here. The styled-region rewrite has never justified, not even a whole paragraph (main falls through to left the same way), so per-row aligns only exposes that existing gap. Justifying it, shaped runs included, is its own change; it's now listed under "Not covered" and in the edit.paragraph-alignment parity notes (fb7a22a).
  • Fall back to ed.look.align for rows without their own alignment: not changed. For existing text look.align is only a guess (Left unless the rows read as centred), so the fallback would pull right-aligned or indented source rows to the left edge in the editor. After a paragraph-wide alignment is applied, the editor already redraws from the rewritten rows.
  • Keep Undo in the box while egui has local Undo history: not changed. egui's history also records caret moves, so after a formatting change, clicking elsewhere in the paragraph and pressing Ctrl+Z would only move the caret back instead of undoing the change, which reopens Edit text: Ctrl+Z with a paragraph open shows its text in a layout it never had, and doesn't undo the change #4176. Undo stays with the box while it holds typing the page doesn't have; a draft retyped back to the page's text by hand is the case this leaves to the document.

Also applied the #4178 nitpick to both narrow-box tests here (4f80b2b).

Thanks for working on this! Adding per-row alignment unlocks a lot of flexibility for headings and complex layouts.

The engine foundations (`paragraph_align`, `/Aligns` serialization, byte-level counting without boundary panics, and array length limits) look solid. However, in doing a deep review of the diff, there are four functional/rendering bugs and a few UI state edge cases that should be addressed before merging.

---

### 1. Per-row alignment overrides are erased if the user changes color, font, or size afterwards
* **File:** `crates/ui-egui/src/edit_text_ui.rs` (~line 360)

In `LineEditor::style()`:
```rust
// Rows aligned on their own, sent with every rewrite of the paragraph while it is open:
// nothing in the page records them, so a rewrite without them would undo them.
aligns: if l.aligns != o.aligns || self.text != self.original { l.aligns.clone() } else { Vec::new() },
As the comment notes, an edited paragraph does not persist per-row alignments in the PDF stream; every rewrite of the open block must supply them or they revert.
However, once an alignment is set:
  1. apply_line_format calls ed.applied().
  2. applied() runs self.look0 = self.look.clone() and self.original = self.text.clone(). Now l.aligns == o.aligns and self.text == self.original.
  3. If the user subsequently changes color, font size, or font family:
    • l.aligns != o.aligns is false.
    • self.text != self.original is false.
    • aligns evaluates to Vec::new().
  4. rewrite_block_from rewrites the paragraph with empty style.aligns, resetting all custom row alignments back to the paragraph default.
Suggested fix: Send l.aligns.clone() unconditionally whenever overrides exist:
aligns: l.aligns.clone(),
2. Justified multi-row paragraphs stretch rows ending in hard line breaks (\n)
  • File: crates/edit/src/text.rs (lines 2963–2967)
In crates/edit/src/added.rs, ends_paragraph ensures the last row of each paragraph is never stretched:
let ends_paragraph = paragraphs.get(i + 1) != Some(&paragraph);
let tw = if align == Align::Justify && !ends_paragraph && spaces > 0 { ... } else { 0.0 };
In crates/edit/src/text.rs (rewrite_block_from), wrap now returns (String, usize) with row indices, but the stretch check still looks at i + 1 < wrapped.len():
for (i, (line, row)) in wrapped.iter().enumerate() {
    let line_align = align_of(*row);
    let justify = line_align == Some(crate::added::Align::Justify);
    let spaces = line.matches(' ').count();
    let tw =
        if justify && i + 1 < wrapped.len() && spaces > 0 { (width - advance(line)).max(0.0) / k / o_state.scale / spaces as f64 } else { 0.0 };
Because i + 1 < wrapped.len() only checks if this is the very last line of the entire block, any earlier row with a hard break \n has i + 1 < wrapped.len() == true. A short heading or line followed by a body row gets forcefully justified across the entire column width with massive gaps between words.
Suggested fix:
let ends_row = wrapped.get(i + 1).map(|(_, next_row)| next_row) != Some(row);
let tw = if justify && !ends_row && spaces > 0 {
    (width - advance(line)).max(0.0) / k / o_state.scale / spaces as f64
} else {
    0.0
};
3. Single-row mixed-style paragraphs miss alignment_frame, causing runaway rightward shift
  • File: crates/edit/src/text_regions.rs (rewrite_styled_block)
alignment_frame was added to fix single-row paragraphs expanding to the page margin (natural = crop[2] - 36.0 - left) and drifting rightward on repeated centering.
However, alignment_frame is only called in rewrite_block_from (text.rs); it is not called in rewrite_styled_block (text_regions.rs). If a single-row title has mixed styles (e.g., a bold word, brand color, or multiple font sizes), available falls back to width = natural. Centering it shifts it halfway toward the right margin, and repeated centering marches it further right each time.
Suggested fix: Wrap style with alignment_frame(&lines, block, style) in rewrite_styled_block the same way it is done in rewrite_block_from.
4. Global histogram in neighbour_left fails on multi-column pages
  • File: crates/edit/src/text_regions.rs (neighbour_left)
fn neighbour_left(lines: &[TextLine], block: &TextBlock) -> Option<f64> {
    let mut edges: HashMap<i64, usize> = HashMap::new();
    for (i, line) in lines.iter().enumerate() {
        if block.lines.contains(&i) {
            continue;
        }
        *edges.entry((line.rect[0] * 4.0).round() as i64).or_insert(0) += 1;
    }
    let (best, _) = edges.into_iter().max_by_key(|(_, count)| *count)?;
    Some(best as f64 / 4.0)
}
neighbour_left counts all left edges on the page globally. On a 2-column page where Column 2 has 25 lines and Column 1 has 15 lines, neighbour_left returns Column 2's left edge ($x = 320$).
When aligning a title in Column 1 ($x = 50$), holds checks own[0] >= left - tolerance ($50 \ge 320 - \text{tol}$), which fails and falls back to own. Aligning the title within Column 1 fails to detect Column 1's bounds because Column 2 had more lines.
5. UI State & Interaction Observations
  1. Selection reset in LineEditor::applied():
    In edit_text_ui.rs, applied() clears self.selection = None;. If a user highlights a line, clicks "Center", and immediately clicks "Right" (to change their mind), Paragraphs sees selection: None. Clicking an alignment button with no selection clears all row overrides and sets the entire paragraph. (In contrast, restyle_draft preserves d.selection).
  2. Flyout button display for caret position:
    Paragraphs::selected filters out empty ranges (!r.is_empty()), causing shown() to fall back to look.align. When a caret is sitting in a right-aligned line without an active selection, the Format text panel shows "Left" (the box's base alignment), giving confusing feedback.
  3. Redo destruction via toolbar button:
    If a user triggers Redo from the application toolbar or Edit menu while an editor holds unapplied typing, close_text_editors() commits the draft before session.redo(), which clears the document's redo stack in Session.
  4. aligns normalization in text_edit:
    In crates/automation/src/lib.rs, text_edit assigns style.aligns = aligns; directly, whereas content_update and page_add_text call tidy(aligns.into_iter().take(count).collect(), style.align). Applying tidy and .take(count) in text_edit would keep the automation schemas consistent.
***
### Quick Summary of What to Highlight to the Author:
1. **The `edit_text_ui.rs` ternary condition** is the most urgent fix—it silently drops per-line alignments whenever font/color/size is tweaked.
2. **The `text.rs` justify condition** needs `ends_row` to match typography conventions and `added.rs`.
3. **`rewrite_styled_block`** needs `alignment_frame` so mixed-style titles don't drift across the page.
Opening a centred or right-aligned Add text box drew its text at the left
edge, a layout the box never had, and Ctrl+Z inside the box (which goes to
the text, not the document) left it showing that way. The editor now lays
the text out with the box's alignment. Justified text is still shown
left-aligned while editing (TextEdit can't justify).
Ctrl+Z is left to a focused text field, so in the paragraph editor it
went to the box's own Undo history. That history still held the
paragraph's text from before the last formatting change, so Ctrl+Z put
it back into a box laid out for the page after the change, a layout
the page never had, and the document kept the change. The box shared
its id across paragraphs too, so it could put back another paragraph's
text.
The history of the paragraph editor and the added-text box now starts
at what the page has. Undo and Redo keep the keys only while the box
holds typing the page doesn't have; then they reach the document. An
open box is applied (as clicking away applies it) and closed before an
Undo or Redo step, so it never shows a state the document has left;
text it can't apply keeps it open and stops the step.
Format text's alignment always re-aligned the whole paragraph or added
text box, and clicking it closed an added text box, losing the
selection, so one line couldn't be aligned. With text selected,
alignment now applies to the lines (text between line breaks) the
selection touches; with only the caret, to the whole box as before.
- Added text stores each line's alignment in its /PCAdded parameters
  (/Aligns, null where a line follows /Align). A justified line's last
  row is not stretched.
- An edited paragraph sends its rows' alignments with each rewrite
  while it is open (BlockStyle::aligns), in both the single-style and
  the styled-region rewrite.
- Both editors draw each line by its own alignment, and the alignment
  buttons show the selected line's. An added text box stays open while
  Format text is used, its style applied at once; clicks are judged by
  where they were pressed, so a touch or pen tap on the panel doesn't
  close either editor.
- Automation: `aligns` on page_add_text, content_update and text_edit.
Centring one highlighted line of a paragraph moves it out of the
paragraph's rows, so the next alignment of it saw a one-row paragraph
and aligned it in its own box: Left left it where it was, and since a
single row grows to the page's margin, each Centre moved it further
right. An alignment for a one-row paragraph is now laid out across the
column of text it sits in (the left edge the page's other text uses, to
the furthest right those rows reach), or its own box when no column
holds it.
With typing undone in a paragraph or added text box, its text matches
the page again, so Undo and Redo went to the document. Redo then closed
the box and redid a document change (or nothing), instead of putting the
typing back as the box's own Redo did before. And Shift+Cmd+Z is also
Cmd+Z to the Undo shortcut, so even a Redo the box kept was taken as a
document Undo.
Redo stays with the box while its own history has typing to put back
(the test egui makes when it handles the key), and Shift+Cmd+Z is never
a document Undo.
The editor is at least 60 points wide on screen, so a short box can be
clicked into. With the box's alignment applied, right-aligned or centred
text in a box narrower than that was placed against the wider editor's
edge, past the box's right edge. The editor now reaches past a narrow
box away from the edge its text keeps, so the text stays where the page
draws it.
Without new text, text_edit rewrote a paragraph from its text joined
with spaces, so its rows were rewrapped into one and only the first
entry of `aligns`, which counts rows, had any effect. With `aligns`
given, the paragraph's own rows (its editor text) are kept, as in the
app.
The editor of a box narrower than its 60-point minimum was anchored by
the box's own alignment. A box whose lines are all right-aligned (or
centred) on their own while the box stays Left wasn't anchored, so its
text was placed against the wider editor's edge, past the box. The
lines are now compared with each other and the editor keeps the edge
they share.
Finishing a box trimmed its text before comparing it with the item, so
an unchanged box whose text was saved with trailing spaces finished as
an edit. Before an Undo or Redo step that edit was applied, clearing
the document's Redo. A box matching its item is now no edit.
alignment_frame found the column by the left edge most of the page's other
rows share. On a page of two columns, a title over the column with fewer rows
took the other column's edge, failed to fit in it, and was aligned in its own
box. Only rows reaching across the title now count.
Tests: the two-column case; a two-colour title (the styled-region path) is
framed too; a justified paragraph sent with its rows split by line breaks, as
the editor sends it, still fills every row but the last.
- A row aligned on its own lost its alignment when the paragraph was then
  given a colour, size or font: the rewrite left the rows' alignments out
  once they had been applied. They now go with every rewrite.
- egui drops a box's selection while the box is unfocused, so after one
  alignment or format a second choice went to the whole paragraph or box.
  The selection is given back when formatting returns the focus.
- Redo from the menu or toolbar applied the box's typing first, a new edit
  that dropped the document's Redo. It now redoes in the box, as the key does.
Thanks for the careful review. I checked each point against the code with a test before changing anything. Four were real and are fixed. Point 3 was already handled and now has a test, and points 2, 5.2 and 5.4 are left as they are, for the reasons below. The branch is also rebased onto main, which clears the conflict in crates/automation/tests/it/automation.rs: both sides had only added a test there, and both are kept.
Fixed
1. Per-row alignments erased by a later colour, size or font change. Confirmed: a row aligned right went back to the left after the paragraph was made bold. Sending aligns unconditionally would make closing an untouched editor write a no-op edit onto the undo history, so LineEditor::style() now sends them with any rewrite that happens anyway (text, colour, size, font, spacing), and on their own only when they changed.
Test: a_row_aligned_on_its_own_keeps_it_through_more_formatting.
4. neighbour_left on multi-column pages. Confirmed: a title over the column with fewer rows took the other column's edge and was aligned in its own box. alignment_frame now counts only rows that reach across the title horizontally. is_centred keeps using the page-wide edge, as before.
Test: a_lone_row_aligns_across_its_own_column_of_two.
5.1. A second alignment for a selected row went to the whole paragraph. Confirmed. Clearing selection in applied() was only part of it. egui collapses a TextEdit's selection to the caret whenever the box loses focus, which a click on Format text does. So the selection was gone after the first choice in both boxes, and restyle_draft keeping d.selection didn't survive the next frame either. applied() now keeps the selection, and both boxes give it back to egui when formatting returns the focus, so it stays highlighted and a second choice reaches the same rows. If a rewrite changes the paragraph's text, the selection is dropped.
Tests: a_second_alignment_for_a_selected_row_stays_on_that_row, and aligning_a_selected_line_of_added_text_aligns_only_that_line now picks a second alignment too.
5.3. Redo from the menu or toolbar with typing in a box. Confirmed. Redo from the menu now goes to the box first, as the key does. What Undo took back in the box comes back. Typing the page doesn't have yet is left as it is, because applying it would be a new edit that drops the document's Redo.
Test: redo_from_the_menu_puts_the_typing_back_in_the_box.
Already handled
3. alignment_frame in rewrite_styled_block. rewrite_block_from frames the style (text.rs, before the paragraph is split by path) and only then hands the framed style to rewrite_styled_block, which reads its width and offset.
Test: a_lone_row_of_two_styles_aligns_across_its_column centres a two-colour title twice and checks it stays put. It fails if alignment_frame is switched off.
Left as they are
2. Justified rows ending in \n in rewrite_block_from. In added text a \n is a typed paragraph break, which is why added.rs leaves the line before it unstretched. In an edited paragraph, editor_text puts a \n between the PDF's own rows, which are the lines of one paragraph. With the suggested ends_row check, justifying a paragraph from the editor stretched none of its rows.
Test: a_justified_paragraph_from_the_editor_fills_its_rows passes as the code is and fails with the change. A heading grouped into the same block as its body is the grouping problem in #2508, not this check.
5.2. The flyout with only a caret. With nothing selected, an alignment applies to the whole paragraph or box, so the flyout shows the alignment a click would change: the box's. Showing the caret row's alignment would suggest a click changes only that row.
5.4. tidy in text_edit. An edited paragraph's base alignment is only guessed from where its rows sit, so its rows keep every alignment set (paragraph_align::set with no base, as Format text does). The engine reads only the entries for rows the paragraph has, and opt_aligns already caps the array at 4,096 entries.
Discord: @Rice_Dee
The paragraph box, and the added-text box, each keep one Undo history under
one egui id, shared by every tab. A box cleared it when it opened on new
text, but a box in another tab on the same text (two copies of a document)
kept it: typing taken back with Undo in one tab came back with Redo in the
other, from the key or from the menu. The document that last used the
history is now kept beside it, and the history is cleared whenever another
document's box takes it over.
Tests: the paragraph and added-text cases, each with two copies of a
document open; the paragraph case tries the menu's Redo too.
Re-review at SHA 7679f6b (my last APPROVE was at e6e57a9).
What it does: unchanged from my last review. Since then the PR was rebased onto upstream module splits (automation dispatch.rs, and the edit/ui-egui text and panel files), so its code now lives in different files.
Checked: compared the PR-only added/removed lines at the old and new heads with the file name ignored; the sorted line sets are identical, so the delta is a pure relocation with no logic change. Gate is green at this head.
Not verified: I did not run the tests locally.
Thanks @FredApps for the careful testing and feedback. I've built the latest branch locally and visually checked the fixes in the running desktop app using mouse and keyboard interactions: column alignment, repeated alignment clicks without drift, menu Undo/Redo, restoring a deleted line's alignment, and saving/reopening. All 12 tests run for these checks passed with zero failures.
One separate caveat from testing: accessibility-triggered alignment actions can lose the selection between choices; ordinary mouse clicks passed.
Correction to my re-approval at SHA 7679f6b (this is a comment, not a change of verdict).
My approval text said the PR-only line sets at the old and new heads were identical. That check was wrong (a faulty file-name filter), so it did not show that. Re-checked properly: about 270 PR-only lines differ between e6e57a9 and 7679f6b (rebase onto upstream's automation/edit/ui-egui splits). I have since read the PR's new commits in that range (text_regions/grouping.rs, including alignment_frame) and they look correct to me. I did not read the merge commits separately, so the part of the residual that comes from the merges is only covered by the PR-only line comparison, not by a line-by-line read.
Not verified: the merge commits, and I did not run the tests locally.
Main split and refactored the text-rewrite code this PR changes
(automation dispatch.rs, edit added/ and text/, text_regions/styled.rs).
Conflicts in added/store.rs, text/rewrite.rs and text_regions/styled.rs
take main's structure, with per-row alignment applied in it:
- rewrite.rs: LineWriter keeps the paragraph's alignment and the rows'
  own (align, aligns); each line looks up its row's alignment
  (align_of) for justify and for its offset. Alignment::offset takes the
  row's alignment. Wrapped lines carry their row, as wrap returns it.
- styled.rs: wrap_styled_rows also returns each row's draft line
  (row_lines), which the kept-rows check counts aligns by.
- Imports for the moved modules (alignment_frame, BlockStyle,
  align_code, align_from, content in dispatch.rs).
Re-review at SHA 43f848d (my last APPROVE was at 7679f6b).
What changed: base drift only. The branch merged main again, including its strict-Clippy refactors of the text-edit writer; the PR's alignment code was adapted to them. In the PR's changed lines that means: functions the PR touches now return a tuple ((StyledRows, RowRanges, Vec<usize>), (f64, f64, f64)) instead of using extra parameters, the loose alignment parameters are grouped in an Alignment { width, k, anchored_right, right_edge, rtl } struct, aligns is passed as &style.aligns, and a few doc comments moved next to the items they describe. The per-row alignment behaviour (an override on a row's own line, otherwise the paragraph's) is unchanged.
Checked: compared the PR-only changed lines at 7679f6b and at 43f848d (2,556 vs 2,610 lines, 82 differ) and read every differing line; all are the regrouping and comment moves above. Head unchanged since I started, PR mergeable and clean.@@gate@@
Not verified: I did not run the UI tests locally; I relied on the hosted gate for this head.
P2: Please keep lone-line alignment within its body column. In crates/edit/src/text_regions/grouping.rs:59-75, alignment_frame picks the smallest vertical gap among all horizontally overlapping blocks. A closer full-width heading therefore wins over a farther body-column neighbour, and its left-aligned row supplies a page-wide frame; centering or right-aligning the title then moves it outside its intended column. The comment at line 60 does not correspond to an exclusion in the filter. This also matches the existing discussion: #4180 (comment).
Please tighten same-column/frame selection and add a regression with a full-width heading closer to the title than the body-column neighbour, checking both center and right alignment. Rechecked source at this commit; I did not run local tests. Earlier Undo findings are not being reopened.
…e heading
alignment_frame measured a one-row paragraph's alignment in the frame
of the nearest overlapping block. A full-width heading closer to the
title than the title's own body column gave it a page-wide frame, so
centring or right-aligning the title moved it out of its column. It now
considers every overlapping block whose column holds the row and takes
the narrowest, the nearest on a tie, so a page-wide heading gives the
title no frame while a narrower column that holds it does. When no
column holds the row it is still measured in its own box.
The comment about page-wide headers named an exclusion the filter
never made; the doc comment now says what is chosen and why.
@FredApps Appreciate that! Fixed in b9940d7.
alignment_frame now looks at every block that overlaps the row and works out the column each one makes, keeping only the columns that hold the row. Of those it takes the narrowest, with the nearer block winning a tie. A heading across the whole page therefore gives the title no frame while a narrower column that holds it does, even when the heading is closer. If no column holds the row it is still measured in its own box, as before. I rewrote the doc comment to say what is chosen and why.
Test: a_lone_row_aligns_in_its_own_column_not_a_closer_full_width_heading. A page-wide heading sits closer to the title than the title's own left column (the test asserts both that it is nearer and that it is more than twice the column's width). Centre and right then both go by the column. It failed before the fix: centred, the title landed on the page's centre (about x=308) instead of the column's.
The three existing lone-row tests (a column of one, a column of two, and a two-style row) pass unchanged. Locally on Windows, all 2,778 tests in the edit, engine, automation and ui-egui crates pass, and fmt, clippy, layers and assets are clean.
…eps its width
Two holes in alignment_frame:
- A column's right edge came from the runs that start at its left
  edge, so a row of several styles ended at its first run, and the
  column could fail to hold a title wider than that run. It now takes
  the right edge of each complete row (row_rect).
- A row with no column to align in was framed by its own box, which
  the rewrite also used as the width its text wraps at: changing an
  isolated row's text together with an alignment wrapped it at its old
  width, word by word. When the text changes and no column holds the
  row, alignment_frame now returns None, so the row keeps the width it
  has without the alignment. With the text unchanged the own box is
  still the frame, so aligning twice is still a no-op.
@coderabbitai Thanks, both are real. Fixed in 648dd42.
1. Measure complete rows, not individual runs. The column's right edge was taken from the runs that start at its left edge, so a row of several styles ended at its first run, and the column could fail to hold a title wider than that run. It now takes the right edge of each complete row with row_rect, as you suggested. Test: a_column_is_measured_by_its_whole_rows_not_its_first_runs. The body's first row is two runs of different size and colour, and the test asserts that, then right-aligns a title that is wider than the first run. It failed before the fix: the title stayed at x=200 instead of reaching the row's right edge at x=284.
2. Keep the isolated-row no-op separate from the wrapping width. Right again: the own box was also the width the rewrite wrapped the new text at, so changing an isolated row's text together with an alignment wrapped it word by word at its old width. alignment_frame now takes text_changed. When the text changes and no column holds the row, it returns None, so the row keeps the width it has without the alignment. With the text unchanged, the own box is still the frame, so aligning twice is still a no-op. Test: an_isolated_row_edited_with_an_alignment_does_not_wrap_at_its_old_width, for both centre and right. It failed before the fix, with the title wrapped into seven one-word rows.
The ten existing alignment tests pass unchanged. Locally on Windows, all 2,780 tests in the edit, engine, automation and ui-egui crates pass, and fmt, clippy, layers and assets are clean.
@RiceDee Thanks for both fixes. The inspected code supports your explanation:
  • alignment_frame now uses row_rect to measure complete rows when calculating a column’s right edge. The regression checks that the body row has multiple runs and that the title reaches the complete row’s right edge.
  • rewrite_block_from passes the text-change check to alignment_frame. When text changes and no column holds the row, the function returns None. For unchanged text, it retains the row’s own frame. The regression checks that longer replacement text stays on one row for both Centre and Right.
These changes address both reported causes. I did not run the tests here. The 2,780 passing tests and clean checks remain author-reported.
@FredApps Your requested change is done: a title now aligns in its own column even when a full-width heading is closer (b9940d7). CodeRabbit raised two follow-ups in the same function, and both are fixed in 648dd42: a column is now measured by its whole rows, and an isolated row keeps its normal width when its text is edited together with an alignment.
All checks are green and the branch is up to date with main. Could you take another look at 648dd42 when you have a moment? Thank you.
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Pass the edit location to alignment remapping.
When two adjacent rows have identical text, deleting the first row and its newline can retain the deleted row’s alignment. remap matches the remaining text as the old prefix, so remap("A\nA", "A", &[Some(Center), Some(Right)]) returns Some(Center) instead of the surviving second row’s Some(Right).
Both editors call remap with only the old and new text. They do not pass the pre-edit selection or edit range. The incorrect alignment can persist in the saved added-text update.
Keep the added-text draft open for accessibility alignment actions.
The pinned egui integration accepts an AccessKit Focus request for the Format button and assigns that widget keyboard focus. Its AccessKit Click path sets a synthetic click without pointer interaction. If the draft then reports resp.lost_focus(), both on_buttons and outside are false, and hold_editor is not set by the Format panel. The predicate removes the draft before the next alignment choice, so the selected-line range is lost.
Handle this accessibility-triggered Format action as a non-committing interaction, like the existing pointer-based Format exception.
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Preserve the editor while an alignment control has focus.
An accessibility Focus event can move focus from the paragraph editor to an alignment control without a pointer position. outside is then false. The Format panel runs before overlay, so a selection can be applied and ed.applied() can restore ed.focus and preserve the selection. overlay still evaluates the old response as lost focus and closes the editor because lost && !outside && !hold is true. A delayed activation can therefore close the editor before the alignment action. A same-frame activation can apply one alignment and then discard the selection before the next choice.
Return a per-frame focus state from the alignment controls, including the flyout options. Keep the editor open while that state is true, even when activation is delayed. Apply the existing lost-focus close branch when the focus state is false so unrelated focus loss still commits the editor. Keep the existing focus and selection restoration after formatting.
Comment thread crates/edit/src/text_regions/grouping.rs Outdated
…eeps the box
Four holes CodeRabbit found on 648dd42:
- alignment_frame framed a one-row paragraph when any alignment entry
  was set, including one past the draft's rows, and then moved rows
  with no alignment of their own to the column's edge. It now takes the
  draft and frames only when every draft row is aligned, by its own
  alignment or the paragraph's.
- remap could not tell which of two same paragraphs an edit took
  ("A\nA" to "A"), and kept the deleted one's alignment. remap_at takes
  the caret where the edit ended, and the typing path (follow_typing,
  both editors) passes it from the box's state. The caret only chooses
  between readings that fit both texts.
- Both editors judged a focus loss by where a click landed, so focusing
  a Format text control by keyboard or a screen reader (no pointer)
  closed the box before the alignment was chosen. They now also judge
  by where the keyboard went (focus_pos): focus outside the document
  view, or on the added-text box's own buttons, keeps the box open as a
  click there does.
Each change has a test seen failing before it.
@coderabbitai Thanks, all four were real. Fixed in 5a86f35, each with a test that was seen failing before the fix.
1. Alignment entries past the draft's rows (grouping.rs:61). alignment_frame now takes the draft text and only frames a one-row paragraph when every row of the draft has an alignment, its own or the paragraph's. Entries past the draft's rows are ignored, and a row with no alignment is no longer moved to the column's edge because another row has one. Test: a_title_moves_to_its_column_only_for_an_alignment_of_its_own, for a one-row draft and a two-row draft, both with aligns: [null, "right"]. Before the fix the title jumped from x=250 to the column's edge at x=72.
2. Same paragraphs and remap (paragraph_align.rs:67-86). The new remap_at takes the caret, where the edit ended, and the typing path (follow_typing, used by both editors) passes it from the box's own state. The caret only chooses between readings that fit both texts, so a caret away from the edit can't turn it into an edit of other rows. The other callers only trim trailing whitespace or replace the text whole, so they keep remap. Tests: the_caret_says_which_of_two_same_rows_an_edit_took (unit), and deleting_the_first_of_two_same_lines_keeps_the_second_lines_alignment (added text in the app). With the caret switched off, the deleted line's Center survived instead of the second line's Right.
3 and 4. Format controls reached by keyboard or a screen reader (content_ui.rs:703-706, edit_text_ui.rs:627-632). Both editors already kept the box open for a click in the Format text panel, judged by where the click landed. They now also judge by where the keyboard went: a new focus_pos gives the centre of the focused widget, and focus moving outside the document view (or, for added text, to its Done and Discard buttons) counts as a click there would. This covers Tab as well as AccessKit Focus and Click, with no per-control state to keep in step. Unrelated focus loss still applies the text as before. Tests: aligning_a_selected_row_by_keyboard_keeps_the_paragraph_open and aligning_a_selected_line_of_added_text_by_keyboard_keeps_the_box_open. Both focus and press the Alignment button and an option through AccessKit, twice, with no pointer. Before the fix the editor closed as soon as the button took the focus.
Locally on Windows, all 2,785 tests in the edit, engine, automation and ui-egui crates pass, and fmt, clippy, layers and assets are clean.
@RiceDee Thanks for the fixes. The inspected code supports all four changes:
  • alignment_frame checks every actual draft row for an effective alignment. Entries beyond the draft cannot trigger framing.
  • follow_typing passes the editor’s caret byte position to remap_at. The remapping logic limits the caret’s effect to interpretations that fit both texts.
  • Both editors check the focused widget’s position when deciding whether focus moved to formatting controls.
  • Added text also checks focus on Done and Discard, so moving focus to those buttons does not commit the draft.
The named regression tests are present. They cover out-of-range alignment entries, duplicate-line deletion, and two successive alignment choices through focused controls in both editors.
These changes address the reported causes. I did not run the tests here. The 2,785 passing tests and clean checks remain author-reported.
Learning: Within repository "storytold/pdfcraft", only for files matching one of ["crates/ui-egui/src/tools/content_ui.rs","crates/ui-egui/src/tools/edit_text_ui.rs"]: When reviewing focus-loss handling in the paragraph and added-text page editors, verify that moving focus to Format text controls through Tab or accessibility actions keeps the editor open and preserves the selected rows across successive alignment choices, just as pointer interaction does. For added text, moving focus to Done or Discard must not itself commit the draft; explicit activation must retain the button's intended action. Preserve the existing apply behavior for unrelated focus loss. Check both editors with two successive focused alignment choices without pointer input.
@coderabbitai Thanks for looking, but this one doesn't apply, so I'm leaving write_all as it is.
In the paragraph editor, the line breaks in editor_text are the paragraph's source rows, its wrapped lines on the page, not paragraph ends. A justified paragraph of three rows reaches write_all as three \n-separated rows. Only the paragraph's last line should stay ragged, which is what i + 1 == wrapped.len() does. write_all is unchanged from main.
I applied the suggested change locally to check. Two existing tests then fail, because the rows that should be stretched no longer are:
  • a_justified_paragraph_from_the_editor_fills_its_rows
  • a_justified_row_keeps_its_indent_and_ends_at_the_margin
Added text is where \n does end a paragraph, and it already keeps each paragraph's last line ragged on its own path (ends_paragraph in added/draw.rs).
@RiceDee You’re right. I confused source-row breaks in editor_text with paragraph breaks in added text. I withdraw this finding.
The inspected code and tests support your explanation:
  • write_all marks only the final wrapped line as the paragraph’s last line.
  • a_justified_paragraph_from_the_editor_fills_its_rows checks that an intermediate source row stretches while the final row stays ragged.
  • Added text uses ends_paragraph to leave each paragraph’s final line unstretched.
No change to write_all is needed for this concern. I inspected both named tests but did not run them.
Learning: Within repository "storytold/pdfcraft", only for files matching one of ["crates/edit/src/text/rewrite.rs","crates/edit/src/added/draw.rs"]: When reviewing justification in crates/edit/src/text/rewrite.rs, distinguish source-row breaks in an edited paragraph's editor_text from paragraph breaks in added text. In the paragraph rewrite, verify that newline-separated source rows remain lines of one paragraph: eligible justified lines must stretch except for the final wrapped line of the whole paragraph. Do not use a change in source-row index to suppress justification. Added text is different: newlines end paragraphs, so crates/edit/src/added/draw.rs must leave each paragraph's final line unstretched. Check regression coverage with a_justified_paragraph_from_the_editor_fills_its_rows and a_justified_row_keeps_its_indent_and_ends_at_the_margin before proposing a shared last-line rule.
Re-reviewed 5a86f35.
The previously reported closer full-width heading issue is fixed: alignment_frame chooses the narrower containing column, using distance as a tie-breaker. The regression a_lone_row_aligns_in_its_own_column_not_a_closer_full_width_heading covers centre and right alignment and passes in the hosted gate. The Undo/Redo interaction regressions are also green. No remaining blocker found in this re-review scope.
Verified CI and logs: https://github.com/storytold/pdfcraft/actions/runs/40858106312 . Source/hosted-test review, not a local build or manual UI run.
