What this changes

Fixes #4175.

Opening a centred or right-aligned Add text box to edit it drew its text at the box's left edge, a layout the box never had. The editor's TextEdit now takes the box's alignment (horizontal_align). Justified text is still shown left-aligned while editing, because egui's TextEdit can't justify; that's marked as a shortcut: comment in the code, and #4180 (which builds on this one) replaces it with a layouter that justifies.

How it was verified

  • cargo fmt --check
  • clippy with -D warnings on pdfcraft-ui-egui, all targets
  • cargo test -p pdfcraft-ui-egui: all pass

Tests. content::the_text_editor_keeps_the_boxs_alignment opens a right-aligned added text box for editing and checks where its glyphs are drawn. It fails with the fix reverted (all ink in the left half of the box) and passes with it.

content::the_text_editor_aligns_a_narrow_box_to_its_own_edge does the same for a box narrower than the editor's 60-point minimum (b1795b9): the editor now reaches past a narrow box away from the edge its text keeps. It fails without that commit (132 dark pixels past the box's right edge).

Never-crash

  • No new unwrap/expect/panic!/unreachable!/todo! outside tests
  • No indexing or slicing with input-derived positions
  • No unsafe

Provenance

  • No assets, no fonts, no copied code; behaviour from black-box use of the app

Security

  • No paths, MCP, control channel or network touched

Discord: @Rice_Dee

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • In-place text editing now preserves center and right alignment. Left-aligned and justified text remain left-aligned in the editor.
    • The editing area is at least 60 points wide while respecting the text’s alignment. In narrow boxes, right-aligned text stays within the box.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage verifying that right-aligned text retains its alignment when opened for editing, including in boxes narrower than the editor’s minimum width.

Opening a centred or right-aligned Add text box drew its text at the left
edge, a layout the box never had, and Ctrl+Z inside the box (which goes to
the text, not the document) left it showing that way. The editor now lays
the text out with the box's alignment. Justified text is still shown
left-aligned while editing (TextEdit can't justify).

📝 Walkthrough

The added-text editor now positions its input according to text alignment and applies matching horizontal alignment. Its input area has a minimum width of 60 points. Two integration tests check right-aligned text in regular and narrow boxes.

Explanation

The description explains the behavior change, linked issue, verification commands, regression tests, safety review, provenance, and security impact. It omits the optional parity/reach, documentation, and reviewer-focus sections, but it is otherwise sufficiently complete.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #4175 requires the added-text editor to preserve centered and right-aligned text while editing. content_ui.rs maps TextAlign::Center and TextAlign::Right to the matching TextEdit alignment. It also offsets the minimum-width editor so the aligned text keeps the box edge. The tests cover right-aligned normal and narrow boxes. The justified-text limitation is documented and is not required by #4175.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes are limited to added-text editor positioning, horizontal alignment, and focused integration tests. The minimum-width handling supports the same alignment behavior for narrow boxes. The justified-text comment documents a related editor limitation. No unrelated change is shown.

Comment thread crates/ui-egui/src/content_ui.rs
The editor is at least 60 points wide on screen, so a short box can be
clicked into. With the box's alignment applied, right-aligned or centred
text in a box narrower than that was placed against the wider editor's
edge, past the box's right edge. The editor now reaches past a narrow
box away from the edge its text keeps, so the text stays where the page
draws it.

740-761: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Assert ink at the narrow box’s alignment edge.

The inside > 20 check counts total dark pixels, not their position. A leftward shift that keeps the "Hi" glyph inside r preserves that count and still satisfies past == 0. The regular-box test checks only the right half and does not cover this narrow-box edge. Add a right-edge assertion.

Suggested fix
     let pixels = h.render().unwrap();
     let inside = ink(&pixels, r);
+    let edge = ink(&pixels, egui::Rect::from_min_max(pos2(r.right() - r.width() * 0.25, r.min.y), r.max));
     let past = ink(&pixels, egui::Rect::from_min_max(pos2(r.right() + 2.0, r.min.y), pos2(r.right() + 40.0, r.max.y)));
-    assert!(inside > 20 && past == 0, "the text is drawn in its box ({inside} dark pixels in it, {past} past its right edge)");
+    assert!(inside > 20 && edge > 0 && past == 0, "the text is drawn at its box edge ({inside} dark pixels in it, {edge} near the edge, {past} past it)");

Applied CodeRabbit's nitpick in 950715d: the narrow-box test now also checks there's ink in the box's last quarter, so the text has to reach the right edge, not just stay inside the box. Test-only change.

crates/engine/src/lib.rs: union of the added:: re-exports (paste_place/paste_rect from #4230, CHAR_SPACING_LIMIT).
crates/ui-egui/src/content_ui.rs: editor keeps #4178's anchored width and horizontal_align and #4266's spacing layouter; spaced_job takes the alignment so the custom layouter keeps it.
crates/ui-egui/tests/it/content.rs: kept both tests.
RiceDee added a commit to RiceDee/pdfcraft that referenced this pull request Oct 24, 2026
Main brought storytold#4178 (already on this branch), storytold#4217 (edited text keeps
every space typed), storytold#4266 (added text takes character spacing) and
storytold#3546 (Save commits the open text boxes).

Conflicts:
- edit/added.rs: AddedText has both aligns and char_spacing. Lines are
  measured with the spaced width (latin_width) and placed by their own
  paragraph's alignment, with Tc set before them; both are read back.
- edit/text.rs: wrap keeps storytold#4217's spacing and still returns each
  line's row, so a row aligned on its own keeps its alignment; a
  justified row stretches over its interior spaces only.
- ui-egui/content_ui.rs: the box keeps its per-paragraph layouter,
  which now draws character spacing (spaced_job), with input_id() and
  the per-document typing history.
- automation: aligns and char_spacing are both text-only options.
- Tests from both sides kept; storytold#4178's two editor tests, present on both
  sides, kept once, and mode_tab's doc comment put back.

The TextDraft literals from storytold#3546 take selection and typing_from, and
an engine test's AddedText takes aligns. New test:
added_text_paragraphs_align_by_their_spaced_width, seen failing with
the unspaced width.
