What this changes

This follows up #1787. That fix made a signed page's resources page content whatever keys a later revision writes. Any other dictionary changed after signing was still classified by keys in its new version. Signature objects were permitted to change under every DocMDP level. As a result, documents changed after signing still validated as Valid, including under P=1. The new tests cover these cases:

  • A rewritten signature dictionary. A new /Reason or /M, or an emptied /Reference (dropping a P=1 certification) followed by a comment.
  • A copied signature dictionary. A second field whose /V copies the signer's dictionary (the same /ByteRange and /Contents) with another /Reason. It validated as a second valid signature by the same signer.
  • A reused signature dictionary (found in review). A second field whose /V names the signer's own, unchanged dictionary also validated as a second valid signature, with a name, page and appearance the signer never signed.
  • A replaced catalog. A new catalog named by the trailer's /Root, adding an /OpenAction, was accepted as "form fill".
  • Indirect catalog entries. An indirect /OCProperties rewritten with an added /FT that hides a layer was accepted as "form fill". The same rewrite without /FT is refused.
  • A signed signature widget stretched over the page with a new appearance was accepted as a "signature" change.
  • Unsigned signature widgets (found in review). Moving and redrawing an unsigned signature field's widget, or writing a value while moving it, was accepted as a "signature" change, even under P=1. The same held for a field that inherits /FT from its parent, and for a signed kid whose /V sits below that parent.
  • Later approval signatures under P=1 (found in review). An approval signature added after a "no changes" certification left it valid. ISO 32000-2 §12.8.2.2 permits no changes at P=1. Dropping or redirecting the catalog's /Perms (which names the certification) was likewise accepted under P=1.

The fix is in crates/sign/src/pdf.rs:

  • Existing objects: a changed object is classified by its dictionary in the signed revision (existing_change_kind). signed_page_resources still judges page resources first. New objects keep the previous rules (new_object_kind).
  • Signature objects: signature values, SigRef and TransformParams dictionaries, and signed signature fields and their widgets may not change after signing.
  • Unsigned signature fields: a change is a signature change only when it signs the field and leaves it in place (same /Rect, /Parent, /Kids, /P, /Subtype, /FT). Any other edit is ordinary form editing, and moving the field while signing it is "other changes". The field type and value are read along /Parent, since both are inheritable (field_info). Counter-signing (including on encrypted files), document timestamps and DSS updates are unaffected.
  • P=1: signature changes break the certification when a signature field holds a value the signed revision didn't give it, unless that value is a document timestamp (later_approval_signature). Document timestamps (standalone or in a field) and DSS data still keep a P=1 certification valid, which is what PAdES long-term archiving adds to certified documents. Forbidding every signature change under P=1 would break that. A change to the catalog's /Perms is a disallowed structure change under P=1, whichever object holds the catalog.
  • Own field and dictionary: a signature is valid only if its field, and its dictionary when /V is indirect, are in its signed revision, unchanged (Own::unchanged).
  • Moved /Root: it is compared with the signed catalog, so a renumbered but identical catalog is still fine. An existing object that the trailer now names is still judged by the role it held when signed (found in review: signed page content overwritten with a copy of the catalog).
  • Small refactors: permitted() is factored out. change_kind and is_signature_dict are replaced by the functions above.

How you verified it

  • cargo fmt --check
  • clippy with -D warnings on pdfcraft-sign (--all-targets)
  • cargo test -p pdfcraft-sign: 133 passed, 3 ignored (keychain, Windows store, network)
  • cargo test -p pdfcraft-engine --lib -- sign: 50 passed, 1 ignored (timing probe), including signing_saving_trusting_and_commenting_afterwards
  • cargo xtask layers / assets: not applicable, since no crate boundary or asset changed

Tests. Thirteen new tests in crates/sign/tests/pdf.rs, with a trusted signer. The level-based ones run the attack at every DocMDP level (approval, P=1, 2, 3). Every attack test fails with the fix reverted and passes with it. Where it applies, a test includes a control showing the same change without the extra key is already refused. signing_an_unsigned_field_later_is_a_permitted_signature_change guards the other side: legitimately signing an empty field later keeps earlier signatures valid at every level that permits signing (approval, P=2, P=3).

  • a_signature_dictionary_is_not_rewritten_after_signing
  • a_signed_signature_widget_is_not_moved_or_redrawn_after_signing
  • a_copied_signature_dictionary_added_after_signing_is_not_a_valid_signature
  • a_field_reusing_the_signers_dictionary_added_after_signing_is_not_a_second_signature
  • the_catalog_is_not_replaced_after_signing
  • an_indirect_catalog_entry_given_a_form_key_after_signing_is_still_judged
  • an_unsigned_signature_widget_moved_or_redrawn_is_no_signature
  • signing_a_field_does_not_move_its_widget
  • a_signed_field_that_inherits_its_type_is_not_moved_or_redrawn_after_signing

Never-crash

  • No new unwrap/expect/panic!/unreachable!/todo! outside tests
  • No input-derived indexing. The /Parent walk in field_info is bounded (32 levels), so a cycle ends it
  • No unsafe

Provenance

  • No assets, fonts or copied code. Behaviour follows ISO 32000-2 §12.8 (DocMDP, signature dictionaries) and the published incremental-saving and shadow attack classes (Mladenov et al. 2019, Mainka et al. 2021).

Parity and reach

  • parity/acrobat-features.toml: sign.changes-after-signing lists the new tests, and its notes say what is still missing.

Anything a reviewer should look at first

  • A behaviour change existing users may notice: a signature whose field is a direct object is now reported as changed whenever later revisions exist, because the field can't be located in the signed revision. ISO 32000-2 requires fields to be indirect, so we know of no writer that produces this.
  • Not in this PR (pre-existing, errs on the safe side): an indirect /AcroForm /DR, or an indirect /AP of an ordinary widget, rewritten in place during form filling is classified as "other changes", before and after this PR. Legitimate form fill by such a writer can therefore be reported as not permitted. This deserves its own follow-up (see the review thread).
  • Signed signature widgets are frozen. If any writer you test against rewrites an already-signed field when counter-signing, it will now show as "other changes". PdfCraft's own counter-signing doesn't do that (signing_an_existing_field_and_counter_signing passes).
  • Not covered: widgets of ordinary form fields can still be moved or redrawn under form-fill permission. The Signatures panel still shows the same mark for "valid" and "valid with permitted changes".

storytold#1787 follow-up)

storytold#1787 made a signed page's resources page content whatever keys a later
revision writes. Every other changed dictionary was still classified by
keys in its new, attacker-written version, and signature objects could be
rewritten under any DocMDP level, so modified documents validated as Valid:

- a rewritten /Reason or /M, or an emptied /Reference (dropping a P=1
  certification) followed by a comment;
- a second field whose /V copies the signer's dictionary with another
  /Reason: a "valid" signature the signer never made;
- a new catalog named by the trailer's /Root, with an /OpenAction;
- an indirect /OCProperties rewritten with an added /FT, hiding a layer;
- a signed signature widget stretched over the page with a new appearance.

Changes:
- Existing objects are classified by their dictionary in the signed
revision (existing_change_kind); new objects keep the previous rules
(new_object_kind). signed_page_resources still judges resources first.
- Signature values, SigRef and TransformParams dictionaries, and signed
signature fields and their widgets may not change after signing.
- A signature is validated from its own dictionary only if that
dictionary is in its signed revision, unchanged (Own::unchanged).
- A moved trailer /Root is compared against the signed catalog.

Five regression tests in crates/sign/tests/pdf.rs fail without the fix
(checked by reverting it) and pass with it.

📝 Walkthrough

Signature validation now tracks signature field and value ownership. Revision comparison classifies catalog, cross-reference, and object changes by their roles in the signed revision. Regression tests cover signature and widget edits, copied signatures, catalog replacement, and optional-content changes.

The new catalog-replacement path can exempt an existing signed page resource from tamper checks. An attacker could overwrite that resource after signing while preserving a valid signature result, including under a no-changes certification.

Retained concerns

  • High · security · inferred: A replacement catalog suppresses validation of the root object's previous signed role. An attacker can overwrite a signed XObject with a copy of the signed catalog and redirect the trailer's /Root to that object. The catalog dictionaries compare equal, and the object loop skips the new root before signed-resource classification. The original signature field, value dictionary, and /Perms can remain unchanged, allowing a valid result despite overwriting signed page content. The full PR base rejects this resource replacement.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The bypass requires control of a later PDF revision, not the signer's private key. Its direct scope is the modified document and consumers relying on this validator's signature result. The current-root skip is independent of DocMDP level, including P=1; broader application or service exposure was not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A concrete collision uses the existing XObject fixture: page content invokes object 7, which contains the signed contract text. After signing, overwrite object 7 with the unchanged signed catalog dictionary and point /Root to 7. Catalog equality produces no rejection, and the root skip prevents the original XObject role from being checked. The XObject is no longer its signed content stream, yet the original signature's ownership and permission references can still match. The base's resource classifier rejects this overwrite. Rendering impact and the final verdict were not executed.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The strongest countercontrols protect different identities: Own checks the signature field and value, while the P=1 guard compares /Perms. Neither checks whether the new root previously served as signed page content. Catalog replacement tests allocate new catalog objects and exercise changed OpenAction or page-tree entries, rather than reusing an existing signed resource with an equal catalog.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The security invariant is compositional: an object acquiring the catalog role must still satisfy restrictions attached to its signed page or resource role. Treating catalog comparison as a replacement for those checks creates a control gap even when each individual classifier is otherwise conservative.

Review of storytold#3440 (CodeRabbit): Own::unchanged checked only an indirect /V.
A new field whose /V names the signer's own, unchanged dictionary
validated as a second Valid signature, with a name, page and appearance
the signer never signed. The field must now be in the signed revision,
unchanged, as well as its indirect /V. A direct field can't be found
there and is never the signed one (ISO 32000-2 requires fields to be
indirect).

a_field_reusing_the_signers_dictionary_added_after_signing_is_not_a_second_signature
fails without the fix and passes with it. The two forged-field tests now
share their setup.

…en it is signed in place

Review of storytold#3440 (CodeRabbit): existing_change_kind took a widget's type
from its nearest /FT ancestor and its value from that same ancestor, and
called any change to an unsigned signature field a signature change,
which every DocMDP level permits. So moving and redrawing an unsigned
signature widget, or writing a value while moving it, validated under
P=1, and a signed kid whose /V sits below the /FT parent was not frozen
for a later signature.

- field_info reads /FT and /V each from the nearest field that has it
  (both are inheritable).
- An unsigned signature field's change is a signature change only when
it signs the field and leaves it where and what it is (/Rect compared
  as numbers, and /Parent, /Kids, /P, /Subtype, /FT). Any other edit is
a form-field edit. A move made while signing is "other changes".
Strings may be re-written, since an encrypted file's writer writes
  them anew.

Three tests fail without the fix and pass with it:
an_unsigned_signature_widget_moved_or_redrawn_is_no_signature,
signing_a_field_does_not_move_its_widget and
a_signed_field_that_inherits_its_type_is_not_moved_or_redrawn_after_signing.
signing_an_unsigned_field_later_is_a_permitted_signature_change guards
legitimate later signing. The test helpers are folded into verdict_after
and stretch_widget.

Both concerns in the merge-risk summary (computed up to 5313b) are addressed:

  • The new field pointing to the original signature was fixed in 47cb05d. Own::unchanged now requires the field itself to be the signed one.
  • Inherited signature-field classification is fixed in 17fb5fc:
    • field_info reads /FT and /V each from the nearest field that has it, so a signed kid whose /V sits below the /FT parent is frozen.
    • An unsigned signature field's change counts as a signature change only when it signs the field and leaves it in place (same /Rect, /Parent, /Kids, /P, /Subtype, /FT).
    • Moving or redrawing it without signing is a form-field edit, which P=1 refuses. Moving it while signing is "other changes" at every level.

New tests:

  • an_unsigned_signature_widget_moved_or_redrawn_is_no_signature
  • signing_a_field_does_not_move_its_widget
  • a_signed_field_that_inherits_its_type_is_not_moved_or_redrawn_after_signing

Each covers both an own and an inherited /FT. All three fail without the change and pass with it. signing_an_unsigned_field_later_is_a_permitted_signature_change guards legitimate later signing at every level. pdfcraft-sign (130 passed, including counter-signing encrypted files) and the engine's signature tests (50 passed) are green.

The remaining note, ordinary form fills of indirect /DR or /AP objects being reported as disallowed, was already there before this PR. It's tracked as a follow-up in the review thread.

@coderabbitai please review 17fb5fc.

@LetoCoder26 Reviewed 17fb5fc. I found no new actionable issues in this commit.

The code addresses both earlier concerns:

  • Own::unchanged requires the original field to remain unchanged, even when /V is indirect.
  • field_info reads /FT and /V independently from their nearest defining fields.
  • An unsigned signature field receives SIGNATURE classification only when it gains a dictionary value and preserves /Rect, /Parent, /Kids, /P, /Subtype, and /FT.
  • Without signing, widget edits receive FORM_FILL classification. Signing combined with a placement change receives OTHER classification.

The regression tests cover these cases and permitted later signing. I inspected the tests but did not rerun them.

Thanks for clarifying the scope of the indirect /DR and /AP limitation. It remains a separate follow-up, consistent with the existing learning.

Learning: In crates/sign/src/pdf.rs, post-signing classification of signature fields must resolve inherited /FT and /V independently from their nearest defining fields. An unsigned signature widget edit without signing is a form-field edit, not a signature change. Signing an existing unsigned field is permitted only when its placement and structure remain unchanged; moving it while signing is an OTHER change at every DocMDP level.

Learning: In crates/sign/src/pdf.rs, rewriting an existing indirect AcroForm /DR dictionary or an ordinary widget's indirect /AP dictionary can produce kind::OTHER and reject legitimate form filling. Supporting these changes requires a policy for permitted in-place rewrites and signed-role classification in both dictionary and stream branches, because appearance streams use the stream branch. Do not recommend broadly permitting all objects reachable from these entries without that policy.

…ocument timestamp does not

Review of storytold#3440 (CodeRabbit): permitted() allowed signature changes at
every DocMDP level, and the new guard test asserted it for P=1. ISO
32000-2 §12.8.2.2 permits no changes under P=1, and signing again is one.
Validation data is not: PAdES adds document timestamps (§12.8.5) and DSS
data (§12.8.4.3) to certified documents. So forbidding every signature
change under P=1, as suggested, would have broken long-term archiving of
certified files.

Under P=1, signature changes are now disallowed when a signature field
holds a value the signed revision didn't give it, other than a document
timestamp (later_approval_signature). Document timestamps, standalone or
held by a field, and DSS updates keep the certification valid.

a_later_signature_breaks_a_no_changes_certification_but_a_timestamp_does_not
fails without the change on its approval-signature cases (a new field,
and the empty field, for both an own and an inherited /FT) and passes
with it. Its timestamp cases pass both ways. The later-signing guard now
covers approval, P=2 and P=3.

Reject /Perms replacement under P=1.

When /Root moves, catalog_change_kind classifies any /Perms difference as SIGNATURE. permitted allows that change, and the P=1 guard does not reject it unless a later approval signature exists. Therefore, a new catalog can replace the signed catalog's /Perms /DocMDP reference without a disallowed change or a new signature. Keep the permitted-signature behavior for P=2 and P=3, but reject catalog /Perms changes under P=1.

Review of storytold#3440 (CodeRabbit, outside the diff): catalog_change_kind judges
a /Perms difference as signing, which every level permits. /Perms names
the certification signature itself, so a later revision could drop it or
point it elsewhere under P=1, in place or through a new catalog named by
the trailer, and the certification stayed Valid.

Under P=1 a /Perms difference between the signed catalog and the current
one (whichever object holds it) is now a disallowed structure change.
Approval, P=2 and P=3 keep the previous behaviour. This sits next to the
other P=1 rule in classify_changes instead of threading the level through
existing_change_kind and catalog_change_kind.

the_catalogs_perms_do_not_change_under_no_changes fails without the
change (both ways Valid, Allowed(["signature"])) and passes with it.

On the outside-diff finding "Reject /Perms replacement under P=1" (catalog_change_kind): confirmed and fixed in 08e4ff5.

the_catalogs_perms_do_not_change_under_no_changes reproduced it on f5bac4c. Dropping /Perms under P=1, in place or through a new catalog named by the trailer, left the certification Valid with Allowed(["signature"]).

I kept the change next to the existing P=1 rule in classify_changes instead of threading p through existing_change_kind and catalog_change_kind. Under P=1, a /Perms difference between the signed catalog and the current one (whichever object holds it) is a disallowed STRUCTURE change. Approval, P=2 and P=3 keep the SIGNATURE classification, as you suggested.

The test fails without the change and passes with it. pdfcraft-sign (132 passed) and the engine's signature tests are green.

@coderabbitai please review 08e4ff5.

@LetoCoder26 Reviewed 08e4ff5. I found no new actionable issues in this commit.

The change addresses the /Perms finding:

  • Under P=1, classify_changes compares /Perms in the signed catalog with /Perms in the current catalog.
  • The comparison follows each revision’s trailer /Root. It therefore covers both an in-place catalog edit and a replacement catalog.
  • A difference adds disallowed STRUCTURE, even if the earlier classification allowed a signature change.
  • The new check does not change approval, P=2, or P=3 behavior.

the_catalogs_perms_do_not_change_under_no_changes covers removal through both catalog paths. It checks for Status::Invalid and Modification::Disallowed. It does not explicitly test redirection, but the same comparison rejects a changed /Perms entry.

I inspected the implementation and tests. I did not rerun the tests.

Thanks for explaining the placement of the P=1 rule.

Learning: In crates/sign/src/pdf.rs, classify_changes applies the DocMDP P=1 catalog /Perms rule after object classification. A difference between the signed and current catalog's /Perms entry is a disallowed kind::STRUCTURE change, including when the trailer /Root names a replacement catalog. Keep this P=1-specific rule separate from catalog_change_kind; approval signatures and DocMDP P=2 and P=3 retain the previous /Perms classification.

…d by its signed role

Review of storytold#3440 (CodeRabbit security architecture review): when the
trailer's /Root moved, classify_changes compared the new catalog with the
signed one and then skipped the new root object entirely. A later revision
could overwrite signed page content (a drawn Form XObject) with an exact
copy of the signed catalog and point /Root at it. The catalogs compared
equal, the overwritten object was never judged, and the signature stayed
Valid at every level while the page lost its text. The base rejected this
through signed_page_resources, so this PR introduced it.

Only a brand-new catalog object is now judged by the catalog comparison
alone. An object that existed in the signed revision goes through the
usual classification as well, by the role it held then.

a_signed_object_turned_into_the_catalog_is_still_judged fails without the
change and passes with it.

On the security architecture finding (08e4f: "a replacement catalog suppresses validation of the root object's previous signed role"): confirmed and fixed in 6cb240f. Thanks, this one was introduced by this PR.

a_signed_object_turned_into_the_catalog_is_still_judged reproduced it. With fixture_with_xobject, object 7 (the drawn Form XObject) is overwritten with a copy of the signed catalog, and /Root is pointed at it. The result was Valid with Allowed([]) at every level, P=1 included, on 08e4ff5.

The root skip in classify_changes now applies only to a brand-new catalog object. An object that existed in the signed revision is judged by its signed role as well (here as signed page content), in addition to the catalog comparison. The test fails without the change and passes with it. pdfcraft-sign and the engine's signature tests are green.

@coderabbitai please review 6cb240f.

@LetoCoder26 Reviewed 6cb240f. I found no new actionable issues in this commit.

The change addresses the replacement-catalog finding:

  • The root-object skip now requires before.is_none(). Only a catalog object absent from the signed revision receives that skip.
  • An existing object still passes through signed-role classification, in addition to the catalog comparison.
  • In the reported attack, object 7 remains a signed page resource. Overwriting it with a catalog therefore produces disallowed PAGE_CONTENT.

a_signed_object_turned_into_the_catalog_is_still_judged covers the reported attack. Its helpers require Status::Invalid and Modification::Disallowed for approval signatures and DocMDP P=1, P=2, and P=3. They also check that each untouched signed file is valid.

I inspected the implementation and test helpers. I did not rerun the tests.

Thanks for explaining the signed-role requirement.

Learning: In crates/sign/src/pdf.rs, when the trailer /Root moves, classify_changes must compare the current catalog with the signed catalog and also classify any overwritten existing root object by its signed-revision role. Only a catalog object absent from the signed revision may skip ordinary object classification. Otherwise, replacing a signed page resource with a copy of the signed catalog can suppress detection of page-content changes. The regression test is a_signed_object_turned_into_the_catalog_is_still_judged in crates/sign/tests/pdf.rs.

Comparison with #4576, which fixes the same DocMDP P=1 hole (a document certified with "no changes" accepting a second approval signature). Facts only; this is not a review.

What I ran (cargo test -p pdfcraft-sign -j 2, Linux only; nothing run on Windows or macOS). I checked out this PR's head as it is, on a base 1884 commits behind current main; it conflicts with main, and crates/sign/src/pdf.rs has since been split into pdf/changes.rs and others, so it will need a rebase and I did not test the merged result. I also checked out #4576's head. I added one scratch test to each checkout, not committed. It certifies a fixture with P = none/1/2/3, counter-signs it with a second identity, then adds a comment, and reads the certifier's status and modification.

This PR

Where the two differ (same scratch test setup, P=1 certification followed by a later revision)

later revision on a P=1 document main #4576 this PR
second approval signature Valid (bug) Invalid Invalid
comment Invalid Invalid Invalid
document timestamp (RFC 3161) Valid Invalid (Disallowed(["signature"])) Valid
DSS only Invalid (form fill) Invalid (form fill) Invalid (form fill)
  • This PR keeps a P=1 certification valid after a document timestamp and breaks it only when a field gains a non-timestamp signature value (later_approval_signature); sign: validate signature dicts and post-signing changes against signed revision (#3998) #4576 breaks it for any signature-type change, timestamps included. ISO 32000-2 §12.8.2.2 Table 257 does not say either way for a timestamp, so I am not claiming which is right.
  • DSS at P=1 is Invalid on main and on both PRs, so neither changes it.

Coverage that is only in this PR: rewritten, copied or reused signature dictionaries, a replaced catalog, signed and unsigned signature widgets moved or redrawn, /Perms dropped or redirected under P=1, and a test that signing an empty field later stays valid at P=2/3.
Coverage that is only in #4576: resolving /ByteRange, /Contents, /Reference and the signer metadata from the signed revision and checking /Contents against the /ByteRange gap; catalog and /Pages relabelling; post-signing /Reference and /ByteRange tampering. I did not run #4576's tests against this PR (different file layout and base), so I do not know which of those cases this PR also catches.

Closing this in favour of four small, independent PRs rebuilt on current main (the signing code has since moved to pdf/changes.rs and its neighbours). Each one has tests that fail on main and pass with the fix:

The rest of this PR is already covered on main: rewritten signature dictionaries (#1788), frozen signed signature widgets, and any change of the trailer's /Root. The form-fill classification follow-up is tracked in #3442.

Thanks to @Harrison-Booth for the comparison with #4576.
