sign: validate signature dicts and post-signing changes against signed revision (#3998) - #4576
Resolve /ByteRange, /Contents, /Reference (DocMDP /P), /SubFilter, /Cert, and signer metadata from the revision covered by the signature or standalone document timestamp (earliest_signed_dict and cache.revision(doc, bytes, covered)), and verify that the dictionary's /Contents matches the hex gap excluded by /ByteRange.
Classify post-signing modifications in classify_changes and change_kind against the roles objects held in the signed revision (old.root(), signed_page_tree, old_page_list, old_acroform, signed_sig_fields, signed_sig_widgets, and unsigned_sig_objects), preventing an incremental update from hiding structural, page-tree, or signature-object modifications by dropping /Type or adding form/signature keys.
Enforce DocMDP P = 1 (certify: Some(1)) against kind::SIGNATURE modifications (adding signature fields or counter-signing).
Add regression tests in crates/sign/tests/it/pdf.rs covering catalog and /Pages relabelling, post-signing /Reference and /ByteRange tampering, and P = 1 counter-signing.
Signatures and document timestamps are now validated against the revision they cover. Mismatches in signed content are reported as invalid.
Improved detection of structural changes, including changes to pages, signature fields, document settings, and removed permissions.
Signature-permission rules are applied more consistently: level 1 disallows adding or counter-signing fields, level 2 permits counter-signing, and document timestamps are permitted at every level.
Improved classification of changes to annotations, existing fields, signatures, and document structure.
…d revision (storytold#3998)
- Resolve /ByteRange, /Contents, /Reference (DocMDP), /SubFilter, /Cert, and signer metadata from the revision covered by the signature or standalone timestamp, and verify that /Contents matches the byte-range gap
- Classify post-signing modifications against the signed revision's catalog, page tree (/Pages and /Kids), page list, AcroForm, and signed/unsigned signature objects so dropping /Type or adding form/signature keys cannot downgrade disallowed changes
- Disallow kind::SIGNATURE modifications under DocMDP P = 1 and add regression tests for catalog/page-tree relabelling, post-signing signature dictionary tampering, and P = 1 counter-signing

Walkthrough
Signature and timestamp validation now reads signed data from the revision it covers. Change classification records signed-revision structure and object roles, then uses them to classify later PDF updates under DocMDP permissions.
Changes: Signed-revision validation
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Resolve and validate the signed revision crates/sign/src/pdf/listing.rs, crates/sign/src/pdf/validate.rs
Listing passes field or timestamp references through SignatureValidation. Validation locates the matching signed dictionary and checks byte ranges, contents, metadata, and legacy certificate data against the covered revision.
Record signed-revision structure and roles crates/sign/src/pdf/changes.rs
Change classification records the signed page list, page tree, AcroForm, and signature-field and widget roles.
Classify later changes and apply DocMDP rules crates/sign/src/pdf/changes.rs, crates/sign/tests/it/pdf.rs
Classification applies signed-object roles and DocMDP rules to later changes. Tests cover duplicate widgets, signature dictionary rewrites, structural changes, timestamps, and certification-level permissions.
A crafted widget can add visible content while P=1 certification remains valid. Multi-revision files may also validate slowly. Resolve the signature-integrity issue before merging.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 7e8fb
Anchoring validation to signed revisions strengthens tamper detection. However, a crafted PDF can now trigger repeated reconstruction of historical revisions before invalid signatures are rejected, creating an availability risk for the application validating it.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: Historical revision discovery now precedes rejection of malformed signature dictionaries. An attacker can place many named signature fields with dictionary-valued /V entries only in the final revision, making each field search earlier revisions before failing byte-range validation. With more distinct prefixes than the revision cache retains, repeated searches cause repeated prefix copying and parsing. The merge base rejected missing byte ranges before opening revisions. This introduces attacker-controlled work amplification and potential denial of service in the validating process; practical exhaustion thresholds have not been measured.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The identified availability exposure reaches the process or worker listing signatures in an attacker-supplied PDF. No signing key or trusted certificate is required to trigger revision discovery. Cross-tenant, cross-service, and deployment-wide impact are not established by the available caller and topology evidence.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A PDF containing many historical revisions and many final-revision-only signature fields can multiply prefix lookups by field count and revision count. Cache eviction turns repeated lookups into additional copies and parser invocations before the malformed fields are rejected. This is the introduced concern; no newly introduced signature-authenticity bypass was established by the inspected comparisons.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Referenced signature fields are matched by object reference, ambiguous historical matches are rejected, and inline fields retain a name-based fallback. Signed-role rewrites and deletions are classified against the signed revision, preventing later object relabelling from granting a more permissive role.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — The revision cache bounds retained entries, and cache hits share document storage through cheap clones. Those controls do not bound cumulative reconstruction work: eviction permits the same prefixes to be copied and parsed again during subsequent field scans.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Bound cumulative revision-reconstruction work per validation operation and avoid restarting historical discovery for every field, for example through a bounded document-scoped signature/revision index. Budget exhaustion should produce an explicit non-valid result without weakening signed-revision checks.

find_sig_in_revision accepts any signed field where of.name == f.name, even when the current field has its own object reference (f.r). A later revision can add a field with the same fully qualified name and a new object reference:
earliest_signed_dict returns the signed revision's signature dictionary for the new field.
validate_into discards the new field's /V and validates the signed dictionary. The second lookup at line 816 matches by name again, so the /ByteRange and contents checks pass.
classify_changes sees only a new signature field and widget. Those changes are allowed at P = 2 or 3 and for approval signatures.
The new field is then reported as an extra Status::Valid entry for the trusted signer. Its page and rectangle come from the attacker's widget. The signature itself is not forged, but the validator shows a valid signature at a location the attacker chose.
The .find call also returns the first field that matches by either reference or name. A same-named field earlier in the list can win over the field whose reference matches.
Use the name only when the field is inline (f.r == None), and require exactly one match in that case.

Read the non-test source of sign/src/pdf.rs in full and skimmed the tests. Signature and timestamp validation now take the dictionary from the revision that first held it, check the byte range against that revision (rejecting a range that does not match the file or a /Contents that is not exactly the excluded gap), and read signer metadata and certify level from there. The change classifier now judges objects by the role they held when signed: the page tree, the catalog, signed pages, signature fields, widgets, references and transform parameters can no longer be altered or relabelled into an allowed change, removed widgets and a changed page list are disallowed, unsigned signature fields stay signable, and a new signature is allowed only where the certification level permits (not under P=1). The fall-through for an unrecognised changed dictionary is now judged by the signed role instead of defaulting to form fill. I traced the new paths for panics or off-by-one errors in the byte-range and revision handling and found none, but the classifier is large and I checked its logic against the tests rather than against real signed files. The gate and SonarCloud were green at this head. I read the code and the CI results; I did not run the app.
…ructure
A later widget that reuses a signed field's name was reported as that
signature. Changing /NeedsRendering is a structure change at every
certification level.
Classify field timestamps from the covered dictionary only.
validate_into already resolves sig_v from the covered revision. The || is_doc_timestamp(v) branch lets a later revision relabel an ordinary signed field as /DocTimeStamp and /ETSI.RFC3161. This enters validate_doc_timestamp, which parses the original /Contents as an RFC 3161 token. It can report an ordinary signature as a timestamp and may return Status::Valid when those contents also form a trusted token.
sig_v is already the current dictionary when no earlier revision exists, so remove the current-dictionary check.
Suggested fix
- if is_doc_timestamp(&sig_v) || is_doc_timestamp(v) {+ if is_doc_timestamp(&sig_v) {

9ed2bbc. A signature is matched by object reference. The name is used only when both sides are inline, and two candidates is no match, so a later widget that reuses the name is not that signature. /NeedsRendering is no longer treated as metadata: changing it is a structure change at every certification level, including P=1.

Avoid re-parsing earlier revisions for each signature.
earliest_signed_dict checks earlier revision ends from oldest to newest. For each end, it calls cache.revision, which opens the whole prefix bytes[..end]. The scan stops only at the first revision that holds the field or timestamp. The latest signature scans every earlier revision. DigestCache::revision clears its map on overflow, so once a file has more than nine revisions, each signature's scan can miss entries that an earlier scan stored. Listing cost then grows with the number of signatures times the number of revisions.
A cheaper path does not already exist in this function. The signed dictionary is resolved from the earliest revision that holds the field before /ByteRange is read, so /ByteRange cannot be taken from the current dictionary first without changing which revision is trusted.
A possible fix is to size the revision cache from doc.revision_ends().len() so that scanned revisions stay cached. Each cached document holds a parsed prefix, so memory grows with revision count and file size.
Scope of the impact
The effect is slower listing for files with many revisions and several signatures. Validation results are not affected.

Comparison with #3440, which fixes the same DocMDP P=1 hole (a document certified with "no changes" accepting a second approval signature). Facts only; this is not a review.
What I ran (cargo test -p pdfcraft-sign -j 2, Linux only; nothing run on Windows or macOS). I checked out this PR's head, which is 15 commits behind current main, and #3440's head, which is on a base 1884 commits behind current main and conflicts with it. I added one scratch test to each checkout, not committed. It certifies a fixture with P = none/1/2/3, counter-signs it with a second identity, then adds a comment, and reads the certifier's status and modification.
This PR
Its own suite passes: 24 + 123 tests.
Counter-signing at P=1: certifier Invalid, Disallowed(["signature"]). At P=2, P=3 and a plain approval signature it stays Valid/Allowed(["signature"]).
This PR changes the match so kind::SIGNATURE is allowed only at P=2/3 or no P, so any signature-type change breaks P=1. That includes a document timestamp. The certifier becomes Invalid after a timestamp is added, which I read as dropping the PAdES-LTA flow for certified documents. fix(sign): judge every object changed after signing by its signed role (#1787 follow-up) #3440 explicitly keeps timestamps valid at P=1 and refuses only a field that gains a non-timestamp value (later_approval_signature). ISO 32000-2 §12.8.2.2 Table 257 does not say either way for a timestamp, so I am not claiming which is right.
DSS at P=1 is Invalid on main and on both PRs, so neither changes it.
Coverage that is only in this PR: resolving /ByteRange, /Contents, /Reference and the signer metadata from the signed revision and checking /Contents against the /ByteRange gap; catalog and /Pages relabelling; post-signing /Reference and /ByteRange tampering. Coverage that is only in #3440: rewritten, copied or reused signature dictionaries, a replaced catalog, signed and unsigned signature widgets moved or redrawn, /Perms dropped or redirected under P=1, and a test that signing an empty field later stays valid at P=2/3. I did not run #3440's tests against this PR (different file layout and base), so I do not know which of those cases this PR also catches.
ChangedObjectClassifier now distinguishes RFC 3161 document timestamps (ClassifiedChange::DocTimestamp, reported as kind::SIGNATURE and permitted under all DocMDP levels including P = 1 for PAdES-LTA long-term validation) from regular approval/certification signatures (permitted under P = 2 | 3 or uncertified, disallowed under P = 1).
Also ensured that removing or replacing an already-signed catalog /Perms dictionary (or rewriting an indirect signed /Perms dictionary) is rejected as a structure/other change.
Added coverage in certify_level_one_forbids_adding_signature_fields_or_counter_signing verifying that timestamp_document on a P = 1 certified document keeps the certifying signature Status::Valid (Modification::Allowed([signature, ...])) while counter-signing or dropping /Perms invalidates it.

A visible timestamp widget can add page content under DocMDP P = 1.
A new widget is classified as DocTimestamp when it has /Subtype /Widget, /FT /Sig, and a /V dictionary that passes is_doc_timestamp_dict. is_timestamp_field_or_widget checks only /V. It does not check the widget's /Rect, /F, or /AP. DocTimestamp is permitted at every DocMDP level.
After a P = 1 certification, the path is:
The new widget goes through sig_field_change with before == None, which returns DocTimestamp.
The page /Annots addition goes through added_annots, which returns DocTimestamp. The /Fields addition goes through acroform_kind and then added_annots in the same way.
The widget's new /AP stream returns None from stream_change, because before.is_none() is true.
The certifying signature therefore remains Allowed([SIGNATURE]). The widget's appearance can still draw content over the certified page. An attacker needs only an incremental update that carries a timestamp-shaped /V.
The PAdES-LTA allowance should cover only timestamp fields that cannot display content. Classify a timestamp widget as DocTimestamp only when its /Rect has zero area, or when its /F sets Hidden or NoView. Otherwise, classify it as kind::SIGNATURE. Applying the check in is_timestamp_field_or_widget covers both the annotation path and sig_field_change.
🛡️ Sketch of the fix
fn is_timestamp_field_or_widget(doc: &Document, d: &Dict) -> bool {
+ // A timestamp widget that can paint content is not a timestamp-only change.+ if d.name(b"Subtype") == Some(b"Widget") {+ let rect: Vec<f64> = d.get(b"Rect").map(|r| doc.resolve(r)).and_then(|r| r.as_array().map(|a| a.iter().filter_map(|x| doc.resolve(x).as_f64()).collect())).unwrap_or_default();+ let zero_area = rect.len() == 4 && ((rect[2] - rect[0]).abs() < 0.5 || (rect[3] - rect[1]).abs() < 0.5);+ let hidden = d.get(b"F").and_then(|f| doc.resolve(f).as_int()).is_some_and(|f| f & (2 | 32) != 0);+ if !zero_area && !hidden {+ return false;+ }+ }

One difference that Harrison-Booth's comparison in #3440 brings out. Under DocMDP P=1, this PR marks a later document timestamp (/SubFilter /ETSI.RFC3161) as Disallowed(["signature"]), so the certification shows as Invalid.
Document timestamps are how PAdES long-term archiving (B-LTA) extends already-signed files, certified ones included. Treating them as a change under P=1 would make every long-term-archived certified PDF look tampered with.
In #3440 we handled this by breaking a P=1 certification only when a signature field gains a signature value that is not a document timestamp. Standalone timestamps and field-held ones keep it valid. The test a_later_signature_breaks_a_no_changes_certification_but_a_timestamp_does_not covers both directions, and you're welcome to reuse it.
We're also splitting #3440 into small PRs against current main, so the parts that only it covers can be reviewed on their own: rewritten, copied or reused signature dictionaries, catalog replacement, signature widgets, and /Perms under P=1.
Checked this branch against a case the tests don't cover yet: an existing object that was no form object when signed (an action dictionary, say) and gains /FT or /DR in a later revision. On main that is classified as form fill and permitted at P=2; on this branch it is correctly "other changes". Could you add a regression test for it, next to signed_catalog_and_page_tree_keep_their_role_when_relabelled_or_dropped, so the role-from-the-signed-revision rule is pinned for non-structural objects too?
Document timestamps under DocMDP P = 1 (@LetoCoder26): In 0075e071, ChangedObjectClassifier distinguishes RFC 3161 document timestamps (/Type /DocTimeStamp or /SubFilter /ETSI.RFC3161, classified as ClassifiedChange::DocTimestamp) from approval/certification signatures, keeping a P = 1 certified document Status::Valid (Modification::Allowed(["signature", ...])) when extended with a document timestamp while still rejecting later counter-signatures (certify_level_one_forbids_adding_signature_fields_or_counter_signing).
Non-form signed object gaining /FT or /DR in a later revision (@charlieruk): In 7e8fb1fd, extended signed_catalog_and_page_tree_keep_their_role_when_relabelled_or_dropped in crates/sign/src/pdf.rs to test an existing signed action dictionary (<< /Type /Action /S /URI /URI (https://example.invalid) >>) that is relabelled with /FT /Tx /T (Injected) /V (x) in a later revision under P = 2, verifying that it is judged by its signed role and rejected as Status::Invalid with Modification::Disallowed(["other changes"]).
