What this changes

change_kind froze a signed signature widget only when the widget itself set /FT /Sig and held /V. Any change to an unsigned signature widget counted as a signature change, which every DocMDP level permits. On current main:

  • moving an unsigned signature widget over the page and redrawing it validates under P=1 ("no changes");
  • writing a value while moving the widget validates at every level;
  • a signed kid whose parent sets /FT can be moved and redrawn, and a later signature doesn't notice;
  • legitimately signing an inherited-/FT field later is reported as ["form fill", "signature"] instead of ["signature"].

field_info now reads /FT and /V, each from the nearest field that has it, since both are inheritable (ISO 32000-2 §12.7.4.1). signature_field_change then judges a signature field by its signed role:

  • signed: any change is page content, as before;
  • unsigned: a change is a signature change only when it signs the field and leaves it in place, meaning the same /Rect (compared as numbers) and the same /Parent, /Kids, /P, /Subtype and /FT. Strings may be rewritten, since a writer that re-encrypts the file writes them anew.

Any other edit is an ordinary form-field edit, and moving the widget while signing it is "other changes".

This is one of several small PRs split out of #3440, rebuilt on current main. It's independent of #5173 and #5175.

How you verified it

  • cargo fmt --check
  • clippy with -D warnings on pdfcraft-sign (--all-targets)
  • cargo test -p pdfcraft-sign: 148 passed, 3 ignored, including counter-signing encrypted files

Tests. All four fail with the change reverted and pass with it. Each one covers a field that sets /FT itself and one that inherits it.

  • an_unsigned_signature_widget_moved_or_redrawn_is_no_signature
  • signing_a_field_does_not_move_its_widget
  • a_signed_field_that_inherits_its_type_is_not_moved_or_redrawn_after_signing
  • signing_an_unsigned_field_later_is_a_permitted_signature_change, the guard: legitimate later signing keeps the first signature Valid, with Allowed(["signature"]) at approval, P=2 and P=3

Never-crash

  • No new unwrap/expect/panic!/unreachable!/todo! outside tests
  • No input-derived indexing. The /Parent walk is bounded (32 levels), so a cycle ends it
  • No unsafe

Provenance

  • No assets, fonts or copied code. Behaviour follows ISO 32000-2 §12.7.4 and §12.8.

Anything a reviewer should look at first

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • PDF permission checks now correctly account for signature-field properties inherited from parent fields, including deeply nested fields.
    • Changes to signed and unsigned signature fields are classified more accurately, including when parent-field relationships are cyclic or cannot be resolved.
    • Moving or redrawing an unsigned signature field while signing it, or changing it into a comment, is rejected when document permissions prohibit those changes.
    • Signing an unchanged unsigned field remains permitted when the document’s certification level allows signatures.

…en it is signed in place

change_kind froze a signed signature widget only when the widget itself
set /FT /Sig and held /V. It called any change to an unsigned signature
widget a signature change, which every DocMDP level permits. So:
- moving and redrawing an unsigned signature widget validated under P=1;
- writing a value while moving the widget validated at every level;
- a signed kid whose parent sets /FT could be moved and redrawn without a
  later signature noticing;
- legitimately signing an inherited-/FT field later was reported as
  "form fill" as well as "signature".

field_info now reads /FT and /V each from the nearest field that has it
(both are inheritable), and signature_field_change judges a signature
field by its signed role:
- signed: any change is page content, as before;
- unsigned: a change is a signature change only when it signs the field
  and leaves it where and what it is (/Rect compared as numbers, and
  /Parent, /Kids, /P, /Subtype, /FT);
- any other edit is a form-field edit, and a move made while signing is
  "other changes".

Four tests fail without the change and pass with it:
- an_unsigned_signature_widget_moved_or_redrawn_is_no_signature
- signing_a_field_does_not_move_its_widget
- a_signed_field_that_inherits_its_type_is_not_moved_or_redrawn_after_signing
- signing_an_unsigned_field_later_is_a_permitted_signature_change

Walkthrough

The classifier now resolves inherited /FT and /V values through parent fields, then classifies changes to existing signature fields. Integration tests cover direct and inherited fields, widget modifications, and later signing.

Change: Bug fix

Possibly related issues

Suggested reviewers: aiongg, ffishman

Merge Risk: Low · up to f6e04

Confirm that the cycle test exercises unresolved inheritance before merging; no production failure is established by the supplied evidence.

Security architecture risk: High · up to f6e04

The change strengthens protection of signature widgets, but also introduces a document-integrity bypass for specially prepared PDFs. A later revision could select different preexisting pages while the original trusted signature remains reported as valid.

Retained concerns

  • High · security · inferred: The new signature-field shortcut can override structural document roles. An attacker can prepare a PDF whose Catalog contains /FT /Sig, no signature value, and an alternate preexisting page tree. After a trusted signature is applied, changing only that Catalog's /Pages reference is classified as FORM_FILL rather than STRUCTURE. At P=2/P=3 or under approval-signature policy, validation can therefore accept a document-wide page substitution without the attacker's possessing the signing key. This is newly permissive relative to the PR base; it requires attacker-controlled content in the revision that was signed.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Exposure is document-wide within an attacker-prepared signed PDF: an alternate preexisting page tree can replace the displayed pages. The attacker needs control of the prepared document and a later incremental revision, but not the trusted signer's private key. The evidence does not establish access to unrelated documents, tenants, credentials, or services.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — For a pre-signing Catalog with /FT /Sig and no /V, the new helper treats a later /Pages edit with unchanged subtype as FORM_FILL. The root object reference and legitimate AcroForm signature can remain unchanged. Compared with the base's STRUCTURE verdict, this introduces an authorization bypass that can leave the original trusted signature reported as valid. No runtime attack fixture was executed.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Actual signature-field discovery starts from AcroForm /Fields. In contrast, the new modification classifier infers field identity from inherited-looking dictionary keys without establishing AcroForm ownership before overriding Catalog and Pages checks. The inspected signing path preserves unrelated Catalog entries.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Added regression assertions exercise moved widgets, signing combined with movement, legitimate later signing, deep or looping inheritance, annotation conversion, and child-value precedence. They support the intended field-state protections but do not exercise conflicting Catalog or Pages roles.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Preserve structural-role precedence and establish signature-field ownership from the signed AcroForm graph before granting field-specific modification permissions.

…s to one that can't be followed

Review of storytold#5181 (CodeRabbit): field_info stopped after 32 ancestors. A
signed widget whose /FT /Sig sits further up was not recognised as a
signature field, so moving and redrawing it passed as form fill under a
later signature.

field_info now visits each indirect ancestor once, so a /Parent cycle
ends the walk, and gives up only past 4096 ancestors. When the walk
doesn't finish, whether through a cycle or the cap, nothing the field
inherits is known. Any change to it is then "other changes", not form
fill.

a_signed_field_deep_below_its_type_is_not_moved_or_redrawn_after_signing
(41 levels) fails without the change and passes with it.

Add the cycle test before signing the cyclic field.

The current deep fixture signs the terminal widget first, so it receives /V. field_info then finds inherited /FT and /V before it revisits /Parent, and the test does not cover resolved: false.

Build the cycle in the unsigned base fixture and call verdict_after(&base, Some(2), ...) or verdict_after(&base, Some(3), ...) without signing that field first. The existing helper creates the separate Signature1 field, while the cyclic widget remains unsigned. With /Parent from L0 back to the terminal widget, the walk reaches the repeated ancestor and returns resolved: false.

The guard classifies that edit as kind::OTHER. Without the guard, the unsigned widget can fall through to kind::FORM_FILL, which P=2 and P=3 permit. Assert Status::Invalid with Modification::Disallowed(_).

Review of storytold#5181 (CodeRabbit): no test reached the branch in
signature_field_change that refuses a field whose walk up /Parent doesn't

The kid and deep-field fixtures now call write_pdf instead of copying it.

🔒 Security & Privacy | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Treat /V null as absent during field inheritance.

field_info stores a child /V null and stops before reading the signed parent’s /V. signature_field_change then treats the widget as unsigned. A later /Rect and /AP replacement is classified as FORM_FILL, which P=2 and P=3 permit. A full-page appearance can therefore obscure signed content while validation remains valid.

This is an existing security gap, not a regression from the base classifier.

…orm fill

Found by merging this PR with storytold#5187 on current main. storytold#5187's test
an_unsigned_signature_widget_turned_into_a_comment_is_no_edit_of_it failed:
signature_field_change runs first and judged any edit of an unsigned
signature field that doesn't sign it as a form fill, including rewriting
its widget as a white /Square over the signed text.

On its own this PR loosened P=2 for that edit. On main it is "comments",
refused at P=1 and P=2. Here it was "form fill", which P=2 permits. Such an
edit is now "other changes" at every level, which is how storytold#5187 judges any
existing annotation turned into another kind, so the combined result
doesn't depend on merge order.

an_unsigned_signature_widget_turned_into_a_comment_is_no_form_fill covers
both field shapes (own /FT, inherited /FT) at every level. Without the
check: Valid, Allowed(["form fill"]) with no certification and at P=2 and
P=3. With main's classifier: Valid, Allowed(["comments"]) with no
certification and at P=3.

Thanks for the review. On the merge coordination: I merged all four together with #5291 on current main and ran the tests. Details are in #5187 (comment).

For this PR it turned up one real bug, now fixed in cbfd080. An unsigned signature widget rewritten as a white /Square over the signed text was judged a form fill, which P=2 permits. On main it is "comments", which P=2 refuses. It's now "other changes" at every level, as #5187 judges it, so the combined result doesn't depend on merge order. an_unsigned_signature_widget_turned_into_a_comment_is_no_form_fill covers both field shapes at every level. Without the fix it gives Valid, Allowed(["form fill"]) with no certification and at P=2 and P=3.

Also since the last review:

  • 9f7597d adds CodeRabbit's cycle test. With the unresolved-inheritance branch disabled it gives Valid, Allowed(["form fill"]) with no certification and at P=2 and P=3.
  • The fixtures now use write_pdf instead of copying it.

crates/sign/src/pdf/changes.rs:565-577
🔒 Security & Privacy | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Resolve an indirect /FT on the child field before inheriting the ancestor's field type.

field_info reads each field's /FT with Dict::name, which returns only a direct name. If a child widget's own /FT is an indirect reference to /Tx, the walk sees no type on that field and inherits /FT /Sig from its ancestor. A field's own /FT overrides an inherited one, so this child is a text field.

When a later revision adds a signature dictionary as the child's /V, signature_field_change takes the signing branch. /AS, /AP, and other widget keys are not in PLACE, so the classifier can return SIGNATURE. SIGNATURE is allowed at every DocMDP level, including P=1. The merge-base classifier read only the direct name, classified this widget as FORM_FILL, and rejected it at P=1.

Suggested fix

Comment thread crates/sign/src/pdf/changes.rs Resolved
Review of storytold#5181 (CodeRabbit), three findings in this PR's field_info and
signature_field_change, each with a test that fails without its fix:

- A kid's own /FT written as a reference was skipped, so the kid inherited
  its parent's /FT /Sig. A text field given a signature value then passed as
  a signature under P=1 (Valid, Allowed(["signature"])); main refuses it.
  /FT is now read through references.
- The Subtype check added in cbfd080 read names written in place. A
  widget whose kind is a reference, pointed at another name object
  (/Square), was a form fill at no certification, P=2 and P=3; main refuses
  it. Both kinds are now read through references.
- A kid's /V null stopped the walk, though a null entry is no entry (ISO
  32000-2 7.3.7), so a value held by the parent was missed and the widget
  could be moved and redrawn as a form fill at no certification, P=2 and
  P=3. main has the same gap. A null /V is now skipped.

The comment test gains the referenced-kind case and shares a white_square
helper. New tests:
a_kids_own_field_type_overrides_its_parents_even_through_a_reference and
a_null_value_on_a_kid_does_not_hide_its_parents_signature.

The two outside-diff findings on field_info are both confirmed and fixed in f6e0428, each with a test that fails without its fix:

  • Indirect /FT on the kid (Major). A kid whose own /FT is a reference to /Tx inherited its parent's /FT /Sig. Given a signature value and an existing stream as its appearance, it passed as a signature under P=1: Valid, Allowed(["signature"]). main refuses that, so it was a regression from this PR. /FT is now read through references. Test: a_kids_own_field_type_overrides_its_parents_even_through_a_reference.
  • /V null on the kid (Minor). A null entry is no entry (ISO 32000-2 §7.3.7), but the walk stopped at it and missed the parent's signature value, so the widget could be moved and redrawn as a form fill with no certification and at P=2 and P=3. main has the same gap. A /V that resolves to null is now skipped. Test: a_null_value_on_a_kid_does_not_hide_its_parents_signature.

ReviewerA — source-read COMMENT (not an approval)

I read the head of the diff: an unsigned signature field changes as a signature only when it is signed in place. A FieldInfo struct records a field's type and value (each its own or inherited) and whether the walk up /Parent finished: "it doesn't when the chain loops or runs past MAX_FIELD_CHAIN ancestors: then what the field inherits is unknown." So the classification of a change is made from the field's effective type and value, with an explicit "unknown" result when the parent chain cannot be trusted, and a loop or an over-long chain cannot hang the check. Walking /Parent with a bound and returning "not resolved" is the right way to handle a hostile chain, and treating unknown as a change (not as harmless) is the safe direction, which the next lines must do. This is the same file and series as pdfcraft#5175, #5187, #5173, #5077 and #4478 and needs the same ordering and one regression corpus. I read the struct and its comment. I have not run it, and no exact-head CI result exists for this head. Nothing was run.

I ran nothing and have no exact-head CI result for this PR, so this is not an approval. Where a diff was long I read its code hunks rather than every generated or documentation line.
