M12: an XFA corner is a right angle unless its join is round, and is drawn with its own line - #4675
This corrects #4319, which rounded every XFA corner that has a radius. It never read the corner's join. In the XFA specification that defaults to square, a right angle; a radius rounds a corner only when join="round". DA Form 31 (Request and Authority for Leave, a public blank form) draws its page frame as a <rectangle> with <corner radius="5.08mm" thickness="0.441mm"/> and no join. Since 0.14.0 PdfCraft drew that frame with round corners, and the curve ran across the fields at the frame's corners (block 1, Control Number, and the Personnel/Finance "to date" field). Another viewer draws the frame square.
How another viewer draws <corner>, measured on two synthetic forms (each case on a <rectangle> value and on a subform <border>):
The radius always trims the edges. Each edge stops the radius short of each of its corners, whatever the corner's shape or presence, and the corner fills the gap.
Shape. The default square is a right angle, join="round" a quarter circle. inverted="1" turns a square corner into a notch the radius deep, and a round one into a quarter circle centred on the box's corner.
Each corner has its own line. It is drawn with the corner's thickness, color and stroke (0.5pt solid black by default), not the edge's. A hidden corner leaves a gap between the trimmed edges.
The fill follows the corners' shapes, hidden corners included.
Plain rectangles. A box whose corners are all right angles lined like its edges (thickness, colour and stroke, not presence) is drawn as a plain rectangle. Its edges meet whole at the corners, and when they are hidden the corners are too. DA Form 31's frame is one; so are its grey boxes, whose edges and corners are hidden.
Changes, all in crates/xfa:
model.rs, parse.rs.
Corner gains round (from join) and line, its own presence, thickness, colour and stroke, read as an edge's.
Border::radii gives each corner's reach, shown or not.
New Border::plain says when the box is a plain rectangle.
layout.rs.
draw_border makes the box one Item::Cornered (renamed from Item::Rounded) unless it is plain. Its CornerShapes carry radius, shape and line, and each edge carries its own Pen.
The old rule that a box whose edges differ keeps square corners is gone: each edge is drawn on its own.
A page break that cuts the box keeps the corners on each side, squares the ones at the cut, and drops the edge across it.
pen is the one place an edge or corner becomes a line (relief strokes stay grey).
pdf.rs.
cornered writes the fill along the corners, then each shown edge between its corners, then each shown corner with its own line.
Edges and convex corners are drawn half their width inside the box. An inverted corner's line is centred on its outline, as the other viewer draws a thick one.
The corner paths are built in one frame per corner and turned for each (corner_path, placed).
Parity. The form.xfa-dynamic note now describes corners this way, and its evidence names the new tests.
No other PR touches XFA corners; the open XFA PRs that change layout.rs and parse.rs (#4588, #4662, #4663, #4664) work elsewhere in those files.

Three tests replace the three rounded-corner tests of #4319:
a rectangle with <corner radius="5.08mm" thickness="0.5pt"/> on 0.5pt edges is a plain box, its top and bottom edges running corner to corner;
join="round" makes one shape with round corners and the default 0.5pt corner line;
square corners lined differently from 2pt edges are right angles with their own line;
two corners given repeat the last, keeping join and inverted;
a 3-inch radius is cut to half the box;
a hidden corner has no line but still trims;
hidden edges with square corners lined as they are give the fill alone, and red 2pt corners on hidden edges give the corners alone.
a_cornered_box_cut_by_a_page_break_keeps_its_corners_on_each_page: a 12-inch box cut onto two pages keeps its top corners on the first part and its bottom ones on the second, with no edge or corner line at the cut.
cornered_boxes_are_written_with_their_corners_and_edges_apart pins the exact paths:
the fill's top-left quarter circle and its turn round the top-right corner;
the top edge between its corners, 1pt inside;
the top-left corner's own line, 1pt inside and 1pt tighter;
a right angle, a notch and an inverted curve;
a box whose corners take its sides entirely draws only the edges with length left.
Each was seen to fail with one part of the fix reverted:
join ignored (every corner round);
no plain boxes;
hidden corners not trimming;
corners lined like the edges;
corner lines not written;
the page break keeping every corner;
edges running corner to corner.
I also rendered both synthetic forms with the CLI and compared them with the other viewer, case by case. They match, apart from one case: a join="round" radius larger than half the box. The other viewer draws overlapping arcs there; PdfCraft cuts the radius to half the box, as before.
DA Form 31's first page, rendered with the CLI, now has a square frame.

Anything a reviewer should look at first
Border::plain encodes an observation: hidden edges with default square corners draw nothing, while the same box with red 2pt square corners draws the corners. My reading is that a right-angle corner lined like the edges is drawn by the edges (presence aside), so it also hides with them. Any other corner gets its own line.
Thick inverted corners. An inverted corner's line is centred on its outline, while every other line sits inside the box. That matches the 6pt probe; it only shows for thick lines.

New Features
Box corners can now be square, rounded, or inverted, with each corner’s shape and line styled independently.
Border edges can be styled separately from corner lines, and fills render independently of both.
Rounded corners are constrained to fit within the box.
Bug Fixes
Boxes split across page breaks retain the appropriate corners and no longer draw a border across the break.
Borders render correctly when edges or corner lines are omitted.

Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated influence of attacker-supplied corner settings is on generated form-page drawing content. Existing callers and authority remain unchanged. The supplied relationships establish the internal rendering path, but do not establish downstream impact outside it.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The corner renderer inserts formatter-produced numeric values into fixed PDF operators, rather than interpolating raw corner attribute strings. Numeric formatting maps non-finite values to zero. Rendering iterates over four corners and four edges, with each corner producing at most two path steps.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Every corner and edge stroke saves and restores PDF graphics state, containing dash, width, and stroke-color changes. Filled corners leave fill color active, like existing Fill items; subsequent supported fill and text branches explicitly set their own fill color.
observed — The exact base-to-head PDF comparison changes imports and the rendering dispatch arm, not document mutation or publication ordering. The new helper introduces no error exit or document mutation; page construction still accumulates content locally before assigning the completed page dictionary.

Corner lines are dropped from flowed subforms whose edges are hidden.
This PR draws corners with their own line. The redCorners case in corners_are_right_angles_unless_their_join_is_round shows this: the edges are hidden and the corners are visible. draw_border emits a Cornered item with edges: [None; 4] and red corner lines for that case.
finish_frame still returns early when b.fill().is_none() && b.visible_edges() == [false; 4]. Take a flowed tb subform with hidden edges, no fill, and visible corners that have a radius. It never reaches insert_border, so its corner lines are not drawn. A draw or a positioned subform with the same border does draw them, because it calls draw_border directly.

Compare corner and edge visibility in Corner::part_of.
When a positive-radius square corner uses the default visible line and all matching-style edges use presence="hidden", part_of returns true because it ignores presence. Border::plain then selects the plain path, so draw_border emits only the fill and omits the visible corner line.
Use visibility equality in the predicate. The current hiddenEdges test encodes the incorrect omission and should cover the independently visible corner case instead.

@coderabbitai On the outside-diff comment in your review of 2f2805df (crates/xfa/src/model.rs 144-145, Corner::part_of): not changed, because the current behavior is the measured one. We probed this case in another viewer on a synthetic form: hidden edges with square, positive-radius corners in the default line (the same line as the hidden edges) stroke nothing, and the fill stays square. A right angle lined like the edges is part of the edges, so it is hidden with them. Square corners with a line of their own (red, 2pt) on the same hidden edges are drawn, and part_of already returns false there because the thickness and color differ. hiddenEdges in corners_are_right_angles_unless_their_join_is_round pins the first case and isn't an omission. Comparing visibility would draw corner lines that the other viewer doesn't.

Review notes (comment only; nothing here is an approval or a request for changes).
What I checked:
Read the source diff. Rounded becomes Cornered, a box with four CornerShapes (radius, round, inverted, own line) and four optional edge pens, so a corner is a right angle unless join="round" and has its own line. Border::plain() keeps the old edge-only drawing when every corner is a right angle drawn like the edges, so existing forms should draw as before. Radii are clamped to half the shorter side and a non-finite radius gives 0.
pen() clamps the line width to 0.1-20 pt and is now shared by the box path and the edge-by-edge path, which removes the duplicated relief/dash logic.
Page-break cut (divide): each part keeps the corners on its side, radius capped by its own height, loses the corners on the cut side (reset to CornerShape::default()), and drops the edge at the cut. The edge index goes through get_mut, so no indexing panic.
PDF output (cornered in pdf/common.rs): fill path closed along the corners, edges drawn between corner reaches, and corner lines half their width inside. A zero-length edge is skipped.
Checked out the PR head and ran cargo test -p pdfcraft-xfa -j 2 on Linux (CARGO_BUILD_JOBS=2): 128 passed, 0 failed, including corners_are_right_angles_unless_their_join_is_round, a_cornered_box_cut_by_a_page_break_keeps_its_corners_on_each_page, cornered_boxes_are_written_with_their_corners_and_edges_apart.
GitHub reports the branch as mergeable with main and CI is green.
Not checked: I did not render a form with these corners, or look at one in Acrobat. The statement that another viewer draws a plain box so and draws a corner with its own line between shortened edges comes from the PR text. I did not run the other crates that use Item::Rounded before (the diff renames the uses I could see in xfa, but I did not build the whole workspace). I did not revert the fix to confirm the new tests fail without it.
Other crates. Nothing outside crates/xfa uses Rounded or Item::Rounded; I grepped the whole tree at the merge base. CI builds the whole workspace. The branch now has main merged in, with Enforce Rust coding standards via Clippy #4897's stricter lints, and the gate passed on pdfcraft-xfa at ff61285.
Revert checks. "How you verified it" lists the seven parts of the fix the new tests were each seen to fail without: join ignored, no plain boxes, hidden corners not trimming, corners lined like the edges, corner lines not written, the page break keeping every corner, and edges running corner to corner.
Rendering. I rendered both synthetic forms with the CLI and compared them case by case with the other viewer. They match except for a join="round" radius larger than half the box, which the description notes: the other viewer draws overlapping arcs, and PdfCraft cuts the radius to half the box. DA Form 31's first page now has a square frame.

ReviewerA — source-read COMMENT (not an approval)
I read the head of the diff: an XFA corner is a right angle unless its join is round, and is drawn with its own line (M12). The layout's Rounded item becomes Cornered with a CornerShape and a Pen, the Edge and Stroke types are used so each corner is decided by the border's corner join, and when a rounded item is split across a page break each part keeps the corners on its side and reaches no further than its own height allows, and is open where it was cut. XFA border corners have a join attribute (square, round, bevel) and the old code treated every corner with a radius as round; following the specification for the join is the right fix. The page-split logic is the part with risk: a corner radius larger than half the part's height, a part of zero height, and a border with different edges (Edge thickness and presence) need tests. I read the imports and the start of the item handling; the drawing code and the tests are beyond what I read. I have not run it, and no exact-head CI result exists for this head. Nothing was run.
I ran nothing and have no exact-head CI result for this PR, so this is not an approval. Where a diff was long I read its code hunks rather than every generated or documentation line.
Covered by corners_are_right_angles_unless_their_join_is_round: a radius larger than half the box is cut to half, and corners lined differently from their edges, hidden edges and hidden corners are all cases there. A zero-height part can't occur: divide only cuts more than 0.01 inside the box. cornered_boxes_are_written_with_their_corners_and_edges_apart pins the drawn paths.
