What this changes

Fixes the dash-pattern part of #5561. Three things were wrong in crates/xfa:

  • parse.rs folded dashDot and dashDotDot into Stroke::Dashed.
  • pdf.rs and pdf/common.rs wrote one [2 2] 0 d for every stroke that isn't solid.
  • layout/draw.rs dashed a <line> only for Stroke::Dashed, so a dotted line drew solid.

What changes:

  • Stroke gains DashDot and DashDotDot.
  • Item::Line and Rounded::edge carry the edge's Stroke in place of a dashed: bool.
  • A single pdf::common::dash writes each stroke's pattern, in multiples of the edge width, with projecting caps (2 J). Square edges, rounded edges and lines all use it.
  • A new pdf::common::line writes a line item. It takes over from the inline format!, so the output can be tested.

At 3pt the patterns are exactly what Acrobat flattens the issue's line.pdf to, per KenM76's triage on the issue: [12 6], [3 6], [9 6 3 6] and [9 6 3 6 3 6]. Solid and 3-D (relief) strokes stay solid.

This PR leaves out rotate (also in #5561), zero-size lines (#4588) and corners (#4675).

How you verified it

  • cargo fmt --check -p pdfcraft-xfa
  • cargo clippy -p pdfcraft-xfa --all-targets -- -D warnings
  • cargo test -p pdfcraft-xfa: 131 passed
  • cargo xtask parity --partial passes. No crate boundaries or assets changed.

Tests. There are two new tests in crates/xfa/src/tests.rs:

  • edge_strokes_keep_their_own_dash_patterns lays out a template with a <line> and a bordered draw for each of solid, dashed, dotted, dashDot, dashDotDot and lowered. It checks that each item keeps its stroke and that each line's content has the right d/J operators, or no dash at all.
  • dash_patterns_scale_with_width_and_stay_valid covers width scaling and a dashed rounded edge. It also checks that a tiny width and a NaN width still give a pattern with no zero lengths.

I reverted each part of the fix separately and watched the tests fail every time: the parse folding, dotted <line>s drawing solid, and the fixed [2 2] pattern.

Never-crash

  • No new unwrap/expect/panic!/unreachable!/todo! outside tests
  • No input-derived indexing. The dash width is guarded: a non-finite width counts as 1pt, and anything under 0.01pt counts as 0.01pt, so no dash rounds to 0.
  • No unsafe

Provenance

  • No assets, fonts or copied code
  • The patterns come from black-box observation of the flattened page content in the issue's attachment, as reported on the issue. They don't come from any other implementation.

Security

  • No change to path handling, MCP, the control channel or networking

Parity and reach

  • I updated the XFA layout note in parity/acrobat-features.toml. It says the patterns were measured on 3pt edges only, and adds a draw's rotate to what's missing.

Anything a reviewer should look at first

  • Scaling with width is assumed, not observed. The issue's file only has 3pt edges. At that width the arrays are exact multiples of the width (4:2, 1:2, 3:2:1:2), which suggests they scale, but a form with a 1pt dashed edge in Acrobat would settle it.
  • 2 J is applied to dashed strokes only. Solid edges keep butt caps, so solid output is byte-for-byte unchanged.
  • M12: an XFA corner is a right angle unless its join is round, and is drawn with its own line #4675 touches the same pen code. Whichever PR lands second needs a small rebase: its Pen { dashed } becomes Pen { stroke }, and p.dashed's [2 2] becomes dash(p.stroke, p.width). I'm happy to rebase this one onto it.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • XFA lines and borders now retain their selected stroke styles, including dash-dot and dash-dot-dot patterns.
    • Dash patterns now scale with stroke width; solid and relief strokes remain undashed.
    • Dashed lines use adjusted endpoints and caps according to line length and width, including for short lines.

dashDot and dashDotDot were folded into dashed, every non-solid stroke was
written as one [2 2] pattern, and a dotted <line> drew solid. Edges and
lines now carry their Stroke to the PDF writer, which writes each stroke's
pattern in multiples of the edge width with projecting caps: [12 6],
[3 6], [9 6 3 6] and [9 6 3 6 3 6] for a 3pt edge, the patterns Acrobat
flattens them to.

Walkthrough

The change preserves XFA stroke styles from parsing through layout and PDF rendering. It adds dash-dot stroke variants and pattern generation. The parity notes also remove three listed limitations.

Changes: XFA stroke rendering

Layer / File(s) Summary
Stroke variants and layout item contract
crates/xfa/src/model.rs, crates/xfa/src/parse.rs, crates/xfa/src/layout/items.rs
Stroke gains DashDot and DashDotDot. Edge parsing retains these variants. Line and rounded-edge items store the full Stroke value.
Stroke propagation through layout
crates/xfa/src/layout/common.rs, crates/xfa/src/layout/draw.rs, crates/xfa/src/layout/pages.rs
Layout carries stroke values through line splitting, drawn lines, border edges, and solid underlines.
PDF dash patterns and rendering tests
crates/xfa/src/pdf/common.rs, crates/xfa/src/pdf.rs, crates/xfa/src/tests.rs
PDF helpers emit patterns for stroke styles, with dash lengths scaled by width. Tests cover line and border styles, scaling, and narrow or non-finite widths.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in crates/xfa/src/layout/common.rs: divide now preserves stroke when returning an unsplit line or splitting a line at the cut; the previous branch preserved dashed instead. The endpoint ordering, cut comparisons, and interpolation remain unchanged.
  • observed — Modified behavior in crates/xfa/src/layout/draw.rs: Rounded-border edges now retain and pass their Stroke value instead of converting dashed and dotted strokes to true and other strokes to false.
  • observed — Modified behavior in crates/xfa/src/layout/draw.rs: Straight border edges now pass their Stroke value to Item::Line; the previous dashed flag represented only whether the stroke was dashed or dotted.
  • observed — Modified behavior in crates/xfa/src/layout/draw.rs: Drawn lines now pass their Stroke value to Item::Line instead of setting a boolean that was true only for dashed strokes.

Projecting caps reach half the width past each end of a dashed line's
path, so a square border's dashed edge painted past the box's corners.
The path is now shortened by as much; a dashed line no longer than its
width keeps its ends and is drawn with butt caps.

ReviewerA — source-read COMMENT (not an approval)

I read the first hunks: layout items of kind Line carry a stroke instead of a dashed flag, so XFA edges keep their own dash patterns (dotted, dashed, dash-dot, long dashes) rather than all being drawn as one dashed style (#5561); divide copies the stroke into both halves when a line is cut at a page break. Carrying the full stroke through is the right model; the split must keep the dash phase continuous across the break, or the pattern restarts visibly at the cut. I did not read the rest. Add tests for each XFA stroke kind (solid, dashed, dotted, dashDot, dashDotDot, lowered, raised, embossed, etched as far as supported), and a line cut by a page break. Nothing was run.

I ran nothing and have no exact-head CI result for this PR, so this is not an approval. Where a diff was long I read its code hunks rather than every generated or documentation line.

Status: waiting_author.

…storytold#5561)

Review follow-up. edge_strokes_keep_their_own_dash_patterns now covers
raised, embossed and etched as well as lowered (all solid). A new test
cuts a 12-inch box with a dashed border at a page break and checks that
both halves of each side edge stay dashed, that the halves add up to the
whole side, and that the box's edges are dashed on both pages. With the
stroke dropped from the lower half in `divide`, the new test fails.

Thanks for reading through this. Here's what changed for each point.

Tests for each stroke kind. Added in d4edc66. edge_strokes_keep_their_own_dash_patterns now covers all nine XFA stroke values, on a <line> and on all four sides of a border, at 3pt:

  • solid: solid
  • dashed: [12 6]
  • dotted: [3 6]
  • dashDot: [9 6 3 6]
  • dashDotDot: [9 6 3 6 3 6]
  • lowered, raised, embossed, etched: solid (they share Stroke::Relief, drawn as a solid grey line)

dash_patterns_scale_with_width_and_stay_valid covers other widths, rounded boxes, and degenerate or NaN widths.

A line cut by a page break. New a_dashed_border_cut_by_a_page_break_stays_dashed_on_each_page. It cuts a 12-inch dashed box at a page break and checks three things:

  • every edge on both pages keeps Stroke::Dashed and writes [8 4] 0 d 2 J
  • the two halves of the left edge add up to the whole side
  • the test fails when divide drops the stroke from the lower half (checked by reverting)

Dash phase across the break. Not changed, on purpose. The two halves are drawn on different pages, so the pattern restarting at the top of the second page can't be seen as a seam. Neither the XFA spec nor our black-box notes say whether Acrobat carries the phase over. If someone observes that it does, keeping the phase means divide stores an offset on the lower half, which is a small follow-up.
