What this changes

PDF Optimizer ▸ Discard Objects had no option for form actions (optimize.discard-form-actions was planned). The reference app's help page describes it: "Discard All Form Submission, Import And Reset Actions: Disables all actions related to submitting or importing form data, and resets form fields. This option retains form objects to which actions are linked." ("Discard Objects panel", https://web.archive.org/web/20221217175446/https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/using/optimizing-pdfs-acrobat-pro.html).

  • Discard Objects has a new checkbox, "Discard all form submission, import and reset actions", off by default (Settings::discard_form_actions).
  • It removes /SubmitForm, /ImportData and /ResetForm actions from /A entries (links, widgets, bookmarks), the catalog's /OpenAction, every /AA trigger and /Next chains. The fields, buttons and links stay, and an emptied /AA is removed.
  • When a removed action has /Next actions, they take its place in the same order. When an indirect action, /Next array or /AA dictionary that holds a form action is shared, the cleaned value replaces that object once and every entry that uses it keeps its reference.
  • An object that holds a form action more than 64 direct objects deep, chains form actions more than 64 deep, or makes the walk look at more than 100,000 action values stops the optimization with the new OptimizeError::ActionLimit, and so does a document that makes it look at more than 1,000,000 in all. Deep nesting with no form action in it is left as it is, and so is an indirect /Next array that lists itself.
  • doc_optimize takes discard_form_actions and returns form_actions (each action counted once). It now also returns print_settings, which Report already counted.
  • JavaScript that calls submitForm or resetForm is not changed; "Discard all links, actions and JavaScript" removes the JavaScript in links, widgets, /AA triggers, /OpenAction and the document's scripts. XFA form submissions are not changed.

How you verified it

  • cargo fmt --check
  • clippy with -D warnings on the crates I changed
  • tests pass on the crates I changed
  • cargo xtask layers and cargo xtask assets (if you touched crate boundaries or any asset)

New tests, each seen failing with its part of the change reverted (on main they do not compile):

  • optimize.rs::form_submit_import_and_reset_actions_are_discarded_and_the_fields_stay: five form actions on a button, a text field, a link and /OpenAction go, while the widgets, the link's GoTo and a JavaScript trigger stay; with the option off, the count is 0 and the button keeps its submit.
  • optimize.rs::a_discarded_form_action_hands_its_place_to_the_actions_after_it: a submit's /Next actions run in order after it is removed, a reset whose /S is an indirect name is removed, and so is a reset whose /Next refers to itself.
  • optimize.rs::a_form_action_listed_twice_in_a_chain_gives_way_both_times: a shared reset listed twice leaves both of its successors, and each action is counted once.
  • optimize.rs::form_actions_chained_past_the_limit_stop_the_optimization: 81 chained actions give ActionLimit.
  • optimize.rs::deep_nesting_stops_the_optimization_only_when_a_form_action_is_past_the_limit: a GoTo and URI chain 80 dictionaries deep is left alone, while a submit, a reference to a reset, and direct and indirect /Next arrays and /AA dictionaries that hold a form action at the same depth each give ActionLimit.
  • optimize.rs::a_next_array_that_lists_itself_is_left_as_it_is: arrays that list themselves, alone or in a pair, stay as they are, and a removed submit's /Next to one takes its place; an array that also lists a submit, directly or in an array inside it, gives ActionLimit.
  • optimize.rs::a_shared_next_array_cleaned_for_too_many_actions_stops_the_optimization: 400 actions sharing a 2,000-item /Next array are cleaned; 600 give ActionLimit.
  • optimize.rs::a_shared_additional_actions_dictionary_is_cleaned_for_each_field_that_uses_it: two widgets share one indirect /AA; it loses the submit trigger and keeps the JavaScript one, both widgets still refer to it, and the submit is counted once.
  • optimize.rs::shared_indirect_actions_and_next_arrays_are_cleaned_once_and_stay_shared: two widgets share an indirect submit and two links share an indirect /Next array; each keeps its reference, and the shared objects lose their form actions.
  • optimize.rs::a_shared_action_run_as_a_next_action_and_as_an_a_entry_stays_a_dictionary: a shared reset run after a GoTo and as another link's /A is replaced by the script after it, and both links run the remaining actions.
  • optimize.rs::a_shared_submit_whose_script_runs_it_again_gives_way_to_the_script: a submit whose /Next script refers back to the submit is replaced by that script.
  • automation.rs::optimizing_discards_form_actions_through_tools: doc_optimize removes a button's submit and reset and keeps its JavaScript trigger.

Never-crash

Every PDF, script, MCP call, settings file and keystroke is untrusted input (AGENTS.md §4).

  • No new unwrap/expect/panic!/unreachable!/todo! outside tests, unless it is
provably infallible with a comment saying why
  • No indexing or slicing with input-derived positions (get, and strings only at char
    boundaries); checked or saturating arithmetic; allocations sized by input are capped;
    recursion is bounded
  • No unsafe
  • Any crash this fixes has a small synthetic regression test

This fixes no crash. Past 64 levels of nesting with a form action in them, or 100,000 action values in one object or 1,000,000 in the document, the optimization stops with ActionLimit.

Provenance

This is the part that cannot be undone after a merge, and the part a new contributor is
least likely to know about. Please read AGENTS.md §1 before adding any asset.

  • No asset from an Adobe product, and no Adobe icon recreated, traced or imitated
  • No font files committed here (they live in
    storytold/craft-fonts)
  • No GPL/AGPL code copied in — MuPDF, Ghostscript, Poppler, veraPDF and DSS may only be
    run as external oracle processes
  • Behaviour comes from the specification or black-box observation, not from reading
    another implementation's source
  • Every new asset has an ATTRIBUTION.toml entry and cargo xtask assets passes

Security

  • --root confinement still holds on every path, including ones reached by nested
    tool dispatch
  • MCP and the UI control channel stay opt-in, loopback-only and token-authenticated
  • No new outbound network access (that decision is the owner's)

Parity and reach

  • parity/acrobat-features.toml updated in this PR, with notes saying what is still
missing — shipped means "exists and tested", not "as good as Acrobat"
  • Reachable headlessly through an automation tool where that applies (AGENTS.md §3),
so agents can drive it and not just the UI
  • Docs updated if this changes a documented behaviour (docs/, crate README)

optimize.discard-form-actions is now shipped; crates/optimize/README.md lists the new discard. The new label has a row in each of the 34 catalogs.

Anything a reviewer should look at first

  • ActionLimit is a new OptimizeError variant. The engine reports it through its existing EditError::Optimize arm.
  • The help page does not say what happens to the actions chained after a removed one. Here they run in its place.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added an optional setting to discard form submission, import, and reset actions during document optimization, available in the optimization interface and automation options.
    • The setting is off by default. When enabled, it removes those actions while preserving form fields and unrelated actions, including actions chained after a removed action.
    • Optimization results now report how many form actions were discarded.

PDF Optimizer ▸ Discard Objects has a new option, "Discard all form
submission, import and reset actions", off by default. It removes
/SubmitForm, /ImportData and /ResetForm actions from link, widget and
bookmark /A entries, the catalog's /OpenAction, every /AA trigger and
/Next chains. The fields, buttons and links stay. When a removed action
has /Next actions, they take its place, so the rest of the chain still
runs in order. An object that holds a form action more than 64 direct
objects deep, chains form actions more than 64 deep, or makes the walk
look at more than 100,000 action values stops the optimization with an
error.

doc_optimize takes discard_form_actions and reports form_actions, which
counts each action once. It now also reports print_settings, which the
optimizer already counted.

Walkthrough

The optimizer adds an opt-in setting to remove /SubmitForm, /ImportData, and /ResetForm actions. It preserves remaining actions and reports the number removed. Automation and the optimization UI expose the setting.

Changes: Form action removal

Layer / File(s) Summary
Optimizer setting and report
crates/optimize/src/lib.rs
The optimizer adds Settings::discard_form_actions, defaulting to false, a removal count in Report, and an ActionLimit error. When enabled, optimization calls the form-action removal module.
Action traversal and removal
crates/optimize/src/form_actions.rs, crates/optimize/tests/optimize.rs
The traversal removes form actions from action entries, /AA, /OpenAction, and /Next chains. It preserves remaining actions and handles shared and cyclic structures. Tests cover these cases and traversal limits.
Automation, UI, and supporting documentation
crates/automation/src/documents.rs, crates/automation/src/tools.rs, crates/automation/tests/it/automation.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/workflows/optimize_ui.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/tests.rs, crates/optimize/README.md, parity/acrobat-features.toml
Automation accepts the option and reports the removal count. The UI adds a checkbox. Tests check the automation flow and translated label. Documentation describes the setting, behavior, and traversal limits. Feature notes specify exclusions for JavaScript calls and XFA submissions.

The option is off by default and operates on an output copy without changing the open document. Existing document and file-access checks remain in place. A malformed, deeply nested action graph can evade the completeness check, so successful optimization does not establish removal in that corner case. Downstream execution of the retained action has not been established.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · inferred: A holder beyond the direct-object depth limit can retain a targeted action when its /Next references an indirect array containing a nested direct array. The depth detector checks only immediate indirect-array items, while the array's separate cleanup pass does not remove a bare /S action dictionary. Optimization can therefore succeed without fulfilling the new removal contract for this malformed graph. Execution by a downstream reader remains unverified.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The new transformation's direct scope is the selected document's action graph and generated copy. Document content controls traversal shape and shared references, but the inspected changes do not grant new filesystem or action-execution authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A crafted malformed graph can exploit disagreement between depth-limit detection and cleanup to retain a targeted action while optimization reports success. This concerns the newly offered removal guarantee; form actions were retained by the base. No downstream execution or data disclosure was demonstrated.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The existing engine boundary still rejects signed documents and documents without an editable editor. Automation resolves the output path through existing access checks, including configured roots when present, and invokes atomic publication only after successful transformation.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The walker defines depth, per-object action-value, and document-wide action-value limits, with cycle tracking and ActionLimit propagation. Source tests cover excessive chains, self-referential arrays, and several deep direct and indirect holders; these are meaningful counterevidence but do not establish completeness for the nested indirect-array corner case.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Use a consistent, budgeted definition of action reachability for cleanup and depth-limit detection, rejecting unsupported malformed graphs rather than accepting incomplete removal. Explicitly define whether every failed in-place optimization requires discarding the mutated document.

…s self-listing /Next arrays alone

The walk that removes form actions now stops with ActionLimit after
1,000,000 action values in the whole document, as well as after 100,000
in one object. Objects that share one indirect /Next array each get a
cleaned copy of it, so the per-object limit alone did not bound the work.

An indirect /Next array that lists itself, directly or through other
arrays, is left as it is where the walk comes back to it, instead of
being followed until the depth limit reports ActionLimit. When what is
left of a cleaned entry still reaches a form action through such an
array, the optimization stops with ActionLimit.

Merged main (d445410) into the branch in 87e98ed. The conflicts were in the doc_optimize description, the optimize README, the OptimizeError variants and the automation tests; each kept both sides. cargo xtask ci passes its 10 steps on 87e98ed (4,955 tests passed, 0 failed, 17 ignored), and the branch merges cleanly with main at a7801dc.

When an action entry refers to an indirect action, /Next array or /AA
dictionary that holds a form action, the cleaned value now replaces that
object and every entry keeps its reference, instead of each referrer
getting its own cleaned copy. Form actions are counted before any are
removed.

Merged main at 3932ee0 into this branch (2f4d8d4). The only conflict was crates/automation/src/lib.rs, which main split into modules: the discard_form_actions option and the print_settings and form_actions counts moved to crates/automation/src/documents.rs, and the Optimizer dialog line follows optimize_ui.rs to workflows/.

1c02fb7 changes how shared actions are cleaned: when an /A, /Next or /AA entry refers to an indirect action, /Next array or /AA dictionary that holds a form action, the cleaned value replaces that object once and every entry keeps its reference, instead of each referrer getting its own copy. Form actions are counted before any are removed. Three new tests cover it.

The branch merges cleanly with main at 20eebc1. Checks on 1c02fb7:

  • cargo fmt --all -- --check
  • cargo clippy -p pdfcraft-optimize -p pdfcraft-automation -p pdfcraft-ui-egui --all-targets -- -D warnings
  • cargo test --no-fail-fast -p pdfcraft-optimize -p pdfcraft-automation -p pdfcraft-engine -p pdfcraft-ui-egui -p pdfcraft -p pdfcraft-cli -p pdfcraft-web: 2,675 passed, 5 failed, 15 ignored. The 5 are the pdfcraft-ui-egui print:: tests (print_dialog_prints_the_selected_pages and four others, "The system cannot find the file specified"), which also fail on main at 9e90b2a without this branch.
  • cargo xtask layers, assets and parity

The cargo xtask ci box is ticked once this pull request's gate check passes.

ReviewerA — source-read COMMENT (not an approval)

I read the diff: the PDF Optimizer can discard form submission, import and reset actions (M11, optimize.discard-form-actions). discard_form_actions is added to the optimizer settings (off by default, as the other discards), the tool schema gets the boolean, the report returns a form_actions count, and a test adds a button with three actions (submit to a URL, reset, and a JavaScript action) through form_set_actions, optimises with and without the flag and checks the counts. Removing a submit action is a privacy feature (a form that posts to a URL is a way to send data out) and Acrobat has the same option. Say what the setting does to a JavaScript action: the test adds one, and the title lists submission, import and reset, so check whether the script is removed (it should be, or the title and the option name should say it is not). Also confirm that a field's calculation order and its format actions (/AA with /F and /K scripts) are not touched, since a form that stops formatting is broken, not smaller. I have not run it, and no exact-head CI result exists for this head. Nothing was run.

I ran nothing and have no exact-head CI result for this PR, so this is not an approval. Where a diff was long I read its code hunks rather than every generated or documentation line.

Thanks @dotCooCoo. PdfCraft now takes its translations from storytold/craft-i18n (#6055). This PR's catalog rows are in craft-i18n (storytold/craft-i18n#141), with your credit. The code still needs review here: please rebase onto main and drop the crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/*.tsv changes, as those files no longer exist. New strings in code stay in English; translations go to craft-i18n.

Merged main at 8bb0528. The conflicts were the deleted crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/*.tsv catalogs and i18n/tests.rs; the .tsv changes are dropped, the branch adds no catalog files, and the new label stays an English tl! string. f0524ac4 also counts a form action inside an array nested in an indirect /Next array. Thanks for carrying the rows to craft-i18n#141.

Merged main at ef8c71a; the doc_optimize tool description in crates/automation/src/tools.rs conflicted (main added the shared JBIG2 dictionary sentence, this branch added the form_actions text). Kept both. Checked with cargo check, clippy and the branch's tests.
