What this changes

PDF Optimizer ▸ Discard User Data had no option for external cross-references (optimize.discard-external-refs was planned). The reference app's help page lists it in the Discard User Data panel: "Discard External Cross References: Removes links to other documents. Links that jump to other locations within the PDF are not removed." (https://web.archive.org/web/20221217175446/https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/using/optimizing-pdfs-acrobat-pro.html).

  • Discard User Data has a new checkbox, "Discard external cross-references", off by default (Settings::discard_external_refs).
  • It takes GoToR, GoToE, Launch and ImportData actions, and Thread actions with an /F, out of the /A entries of link annotations and bookmarks. The actions chained after a removed one through /Next take its place in the same order; entries there that are not actions (a null, or a reference to one) do not.
  • The page names links, so only link annotations (/Subtype /Link, also when the name is stored as an indirect object) and bookmarks are changed. Other annotations, such as form fields, keep their actions.
  • A link left with no action and no /Dest is removed from its page, and from every other page or place in /Annots that lists the same link; a shared link counts once in external_links. When the link is an indirect object, that object is also rewritten without the action, so anything else that refers to it (the structure tree, for example) holds no action to another document. A bookmark keeps its title, its place and its children; bookmarks stored directly inside another bookmark are changed where they are.
  • Links within the document (/Dest, GoTo) and web links (URI) stay. An indirect action that changes is written as a new indirect object, except the first action left at the head of an /A, which is copied into the /A directly when other actions follow it. Objects that use the old action keep it.
  • An /A with more than 100,000 values to check, or one that opens another document and needs more than 100,000 values to rewrite, stops the optimization with the new OptimizeError::ExternalRefLimit. So does an outline of more than 100,000 bookmarks, or one with bookmarks stored directly inside each other more than 512 levels deep.
  • doc_optimize takes discard_external_refs and returns external_links and external_bookmarks.

How you verified it

  • cargo fmt --check
  • clippy with -D warnings on the crates I changed
  • tests pass on the crates I changed
  • cargo xtask layers and cargo xtask assets (if you touched crate boundaries or any asset)

New tests, each seen failing with its part of the change reverted (on main they do not compile):

  • optimize.rs::links_and_bookmarks_to_other_documents_are_discarded_and_links_within_stay: GoToR, Launch and GoToE links go, a GoToR chained to a URI leaves a URI link, the web, GoTo and /Dest links stay, and a GoToR bookmark keeps its place without its action; with the option off nothing changes.
  • optimize.rs::an_action_to_another_document_hands_its_place_to_the_actions_after_it: successors run in order, a shared Launch with an indirect /S is removed, and a chain that comes back to a removed action ends there.
  • optimize.rs::entries_that_are_not_actions_do_not_take_the_place_of_a_removed_action: a null and a reference to a null before a URI in /Next leave the link and a bookmark with their URI, and a list of nulls leaves no action.
  • optimize.rs::a_chain_deeper_than_the_limit_loses_its_tail_and_one_without_a_remote_action_stays: a 600-deep chain ending in a GoToR is cut, and one ending in a Named action is kept whole.
  • optimize.rs::a_long_chain_of_indirect_actions_stays_indirect_and_reads_back_after_saving: 130 indirect URI actions before a GoToR become a new indirect chain, the old chain is unchanged, and all 130 URIs read back after saving and reopening.
  • optimize.rs::shared_actions_that_multiply_stop_the_optimization_when_one_opens_another_document: 40 levels of shared actions (2^40 paths) give ExternalRefLimit when a GoToR is at the bottom, and are left alone when there is none.
  • optimize.rs::a_shared_chain_without_remote_actions_is_looked_at_once: 600 levels that each list one 2,000-action chain of web links sixty times, ending in a GoToR, lose the GoToR without running out of the 100,000-value limit.
  • optimize.rs::a_link_named_through_an_indirect_subtype_is_discarded_and_a_form_field_keeps_its_action: a GoToR link whose /Subtype is an indirect name goes, and a form field with a GoToR keeps it.
  • optimize.rs::thread_actions_into_another_file_and_data_imports_are_discarded_and_threads_here_stay: a Thread with /F and an ImportData link go, and a Thread without /F stays.
  • optimize.rs::an_outline_over_the_limit_stops_the_optimization: 100,001 bookmarks give ExternalRefLimit.
  • optimize.rs::bookmarks_stored_inside_other_bookmarks_lose_their_actions_too: a direct outline dictionary with a direct bookmark, its direct /Next and that one's indirect child all lose their actions to other documents.
  • optimize.rs::a_removed_link_kept_by_the_structure_tree_reads_back_without_its_action: a GoToR link referenced from the structure tree leaves its page, and after saving and reopening the object the structure tree points at has no /A.
  • optimize.rs::repeated_indirect_remote_link_is_removed_from_one_page and optimize.rs::shared_indirect_remote_link_with_empty_next_is_removed_from_every_page: an indirect GoToR link listed twice on one page, or on two pages, is removed everywhere, and a shared GoToR bookmark counts once.
  • automation.rs::optimizing_discards_links_to_other_documents_through_tools: doc_optimize keeps a GoToR link by default and removes it with discard_external_refs.

Commands: cargo clippy -p pdfcraft-optimize -p pdfcraft-automation -p pdfcraft-ui-egui -p pdfcraft-engine --all-targets -- -D warnings; cargo test -p pdfcraft-optimize (93 passed, 77 in optimize.rs); cargo test -p pdfcraft-automation --test it -- optimiz (10 passed); cargo test -p pdfcraft-ui-egui --lib i18n (65 passed); cargo xtask parity, layers, assets.

On Windows 11 (x86-64) with rustc 1.99.1, on b87b0d3 (this branch with main at 65ff3a0 merged in; the merge kept both mono and discard_external_refs in the doc_optimize description): cargo check --workspace --tests, cargo fmt --all -- --check and the commands above. The full cargo xtask ci runs in this pull request's CI.

Earlier, on 462ddff (main at 9e90b2a merged in), cargo xtask ci ran fmt, clippy and the pdfcraft-cli check, and the test step ran 5,183 passed, 5 failed, 22 ignored; the 5 failures were print:: tests in pdfcraft-ui-egui's it tests that also failed on main at 9e90b2a without this branch.

Never-crash

Every PDF, script, MCP call, settings file and keystroke is untrusted input (AGENTS.md §4).

  • No new unwrap/expect/panic!/unreachable!/todo! outside tests, unless it is
provably infallible with a comment saying why
  • No indexing or slicing with input-derived positions (get, and strings only at char
    boundaries); checked or saturating arithmetic; allocations sized by input are capped;
    recursion is bounded
  • No unsafe
  • Any crash this fixes has a small synthetic regression test

This fixes no crash. The rewrite follows 512 levels (actions, /Next arrays and references); past that, the rest of a chain is kept when it opens no other document and removed when it does.

Provenance

This is the part that cannot be undone after a merge, and the part a new contributor is
least likely to know about. Please read AGENTS.md §1 before adding any asset.

  • No asset from an Adobe product, and no Adobe icon recreated, traced or imitated
  • No font files committed here (they live in
    storytold/craft-fonts)
  • No GPL/AGPL code copied in — MuPDF, Ghostscript, Poppler, veraPDF and DSS may only be
    run as external oracle processes
  • Behaviour comes from the specification or black-box observation, not from reading
    another implementation's source
  • Every new asset has an ATTRIBUTION.toml entry and cargo xtask assets passes

Security

  • --root confinement still holds on every path, including ones reached by nested
    tool dispatch
  • MCP and the UI control channel stay opt-in, loopback-only and token-authenticated
  • No new outbound network access (that decision is the owner's)

Parity and reach

  • parity/acrobat-features.toml updated in this PR, with notes saying what is still
missing — shipped means "exists and tested", not "as good as Acrobat"
  • Reachable headlessly through an automation tool where that applies (AGENTS.md §3),
so agents can drive it and not just the UI
  • Docs updated if this changes a documented behaviour (docs/, crate README)

optimize.discard-external-refs is now shipped; crates/optimize/README.md lists it. The new label has no catalog rows yet.

Anything a reviewer should look at first

  • The help page does not say which actions count as links to other documents. Here they are the actions that open or read another file: GoToR, GoToE, Launch, ImportData, and Thread with an /F (a Thread without /F is in this document). URI web links stay, and bookmarks are treated like links. /AA triggers, widget actions, /OpenAction and JavaScript are not changed.
  • ExternalRefLimit is a new OptimizeError variant. The engine reports it through its existing EditError::Optimize arm.
  • Merged with the open M11: PDF Optimizer can discard form submission, import and reset actions (optimize.discard-form-actions) #4416 (form actions in the same optimizer), the branch conflicts in crates/optimize/src/lib.rs (the mod list), which resolves by keeping both lines, and in crates/automation/src/tools.rs, where the one-line doc_optimize description needs both added clauses.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added an optional “Discard external cross-references” setting in the optimization dialog; it is off by default and also available through automation.
    • When enabled, optimization removes links and bookmark actions that open or read other documents, including supported chained actions. Internal-document and web links remain, and bookmarks retain their titles and children.
    • Links left without a destination are removed. Optimization results report the number of affected links and bookmarks.

…ss-references)

PDF Optimizer > Discard User Data gets "Discard external cross-references",
off by default. It takes GoToR, GoToE, Launch and ImportData actions, and
Thread actions with an /F, out of the actions of link annotations and
bookmarks, and the actions chained after one through /Next take its place
in order. Other annotations, such as form fields, keep their actions. A
link left with no action and no /Dest is removed from its page; when the
link is an indirect object, that object is rewritten without the action
for anything else that refers to it. A bookmark keeps its title, place and
children, including a bookmark stored directly inside another one. Links
within the document and web links stay. An indirect action that changes
is written as a new indirect object, except the first action left at the
head of an /A, which is copied into the /A directly when other actions
follow it. Objects that use the old action keep it. An /A with more than
100,000 values to check, or one that opens another document and needs
more than 100,000 values to rewrite, stops the optimization with
OptimizeError::ExternalRefLimit, and so does an outline of more than
100,000 bookmarks.

doc_optimize takes discard_external_refs and reports external_links and
external_bookmarks.

Walkthrough

Adds an opt-in optimizer setting that removes selected external-document actions from links and bookmarks. Automation and the graphical interface expose the setting. The optimizer reports changed-link and bookmark counts.

Changes: External reference cleanup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Optimizer setting and integration
crates/optimize/src/lib.rs, crates/automation/src/documents.rs, crates/automation/src/tools.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/workflows/optimize_ui.rs
The optimizer adds discard_external_refs, an error for traversal limits, and report counts. Automation accepts the setting and returns the counts. The optimizer dialog adds a checkbox.
Action traversal and rewriting
crates/optimize/src/external_refs.rs
The new module detects selected external actions and rewrites bounded /Next chains, retaining non-external actions where possible. It processes links and bookmarks and removes page links that have neither an action nor a destination.
Behavior tests and documentation
crates/optimize/tests/optimize.rs, crates/automation/tests/it/automation.rs, crates/optimize/README.md, parity/acrobat-features.toml
Tests cover removed and retained actions, action chains, traversal limits, and saved documents. The README documents the setting and its behavior. The feature record marks the option as shipped.

Merge Risk: Minimal · previous review 40d7c

The previously identified action-retention and documentation concerns are addressed. No actionable merge-blocking risk is established.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to b87b0

The option is disabled by default and normal application use optimizes a copy, publishing output only after success. No expanded file-access authority was identified. Failed cleanup can leave an in-memory document partly changed for direct library callers, and this option is not comprehensive removal of executable PDF content.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Attacker-controlled PDF action and outline graphs can influence cleanup work and cause the selected optimization job to fail. In the inspected application path, mutations belong to that job's document copy; no new cross-document, tenant or service authority was identified.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The existing engine still rejects signed documents and requires an editable document before capturing a copy. Automation still checks configured path roots and publishes only successfully generated bytes. Root restrictions remain conditional on configuration; this PR does not introduce them or strengthen upstream authentication.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Action processing has step and rewrite-depth limits, dirty-reference cycle detection, and outline item/depth limits. Regression assertions cover exponential shared-action expansion, deep-chain handling and save/reopen preservation. These controls bound individual traversals but do not establish a whole-document execution-time budget.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Clarify that direct optimizer callers must discard or restore the document after any cleanup error, and verify late-limit failure isolation at the application boundary. This would make the existing failure-containment expectation explicit without requiring transactional rewriting.

When an action to another document was removed and its /Next list
started with a null or a reference to something other than an action,
that entry became the head of the chain, and the actions after it, such
as a web link, were dropped with it. Leading entries that are not
action dictionaries are now skipped. The Settings::discard_external_refs
doc comment lists every action type the option removes.

Merged main at fc1372a (f3e2701) and fixed both review threads (8de27ff).

  • Conflicts: the doc_optimize description in crates/automation/src/tools.rs and the Clean Up text in crates/optimize/README.md. Both keep main's new compatibility, object stream and LZW text and add this branch's external cross-reference text.
  • cargo xtask ci on 8de27ff (Windows 11, x86-64): fmt, clippy and the pdfcraft-cli check passed; the test step ran 4,878 passed, 4 failed, 17 ignored. The 4 failures were XFA script time-budget tests in automation.rs, run while other builds held the CPU at 100%; all 10 xfa tests pass when run alone, as do the frame-budget, render-thread and control tests that failed in the first run. i18n-report, layers, wasm, assets, deny and parity passed when run one by one.
  • git merge-tree reports no conflicts with main at a7801dc.

main split crates/automation/src/lib.rs into modules; the doc_optimize option and its two counts now go in documents.rs.

Merged main (9e90b2a) into the branch in 462ddff. main split crates/automation/src/lib.rs into modules, so the discard_external_refs option and the external_links and external_bookmarks counts of doc_optimize now sit in crates/automation/src/documents.rs. The branch merges cleanly with main at 5af1027.

cargo xtask ci on Windows 11 on 462ddff: fmt, clippy and the pdfcraft-cli check passed. The test step ran 5,183 passed, 5 failed, 22 ignored. The 5 failures are print::current_print_page_saves_the_viewed_page_when_labels_restart, print_as_image_is_an_advanced_choice_that_saves_pictures, print_dialog_lays_out_sheets_and_saves_a_pdf, print_dialog_prints_the_selected_pages and restored_paper_keeps_preview_and_saved_sheet_dimensions in pdfcraft-ui-egui's it tests; the same 5 fail on main at 9e90b2a without this branch. i18n-report, layers, wasm, assets and parity passed when run one by one; deny was skipped because cargo-deny is not installed here.

… action

A link annotation listed twice in one page's /Annots, or by two pages, kept its later references after the first one stripped its external action, leaving inert links on the page. Every reference to a link that ends up with no action and no /Dest is now removed. A shared link counts once in external_links.

ReviewerA — source-read COMMENT (not an approval)

I read the diff: the PDF Optimizer can discard links to other documents (M11, optimize.discard-external-refs), the sibling of pdfcraft#4416 by the same author (same lines in documents.rs and tools.rs, so the two will conflict textually). discard_external_refs (off by default) removes GoToR, GoToE and Launch actions per the README and the report gets external_links and external_bookmarks counts; the test makes a PDF with a link to other.pdf, optimises with the default (the link stays: link_list count 1 and the report 0) and with the flag (the report says one link, none left). An explicit default-off setting with a test of both states is right. Launch actions are a security risk (they run a program) and GoToR to a UNC path can leak a credential hash on Windows: the setting is a useful privacy tool, and a "security" preset or the Sanitize tool might want it on. Also say what happens to a link that has both an external and an internal destination, and to a URI action (a web link: not external reference in the sense of this option? State it). I have not run it, and no exact-head CI result exists for this head. Nothing was run.

I ran nothing and have no exact-head CI result for this PR, so this is not an approval. Where a diff was long I read its code hunks rather than every generated or documentation line.

Merged main at 0cba87a; conflict in crates/automation/src/tools.rs (the doc_optimize description) resolved by keeping main's JBIG2 wording and the discard_external_refs sentence. cargo check --workspace --tests, cargo fmt --check and clippy on the automation, optimize and ui-egui crates pass; the optimize and automation tests pass (462 tests).

The branch includes main at 3936f93a14 and merges cleanly with main at 661ded72bb. The save/reopen fix keeps promoted action chains readable after an external action is removed. The regression reproduced an unreadable annotation before the fix.

For a link with both an external /A and a local /Dest, the external action is removed and the local destination stays. URI web links and GoTo actions within the document stay, including actions chained after a removed external action. The tests cover these cases and the saved document.

Windows checks: formatting, optimizer and automation tests, and clippy for both crates. Workspace test compilation passed on the merged branch.

Merged main at 5f5485d; the doc_optimize tool description in crates/automation/src/tools.rs conflicted, and I kept main's new text and added the discard_external_refs sentence to it. Checked with cargo check, clippy and the branch's tests.
