…es per copy, selection fixes CodeRabbit's findings on storytold#3484, and a report from use: comments another tool wrote directly into a page's /Annots array (no object of their own) did not copy, because the selected comments were matched by object reference. The export now filters by position (page, index), replies still following their parent's reference. - Every pasted copy gets a name from its own position, and a source name shared by two comments maps to the first copy only, so two copies arrive instead of one replacing the other. - A paste selects exactly the comments it added (the page's names before and after), not the last n. - Adding a comment selects it alone (the other selected comments are let go); a batch that only moves comments keeps the selection, so the group can be moved or copied again. - The Comments panel shows the reply field on the comment with the handles only, so one draft belongs to one comment. - The page menu's Copy runs the registered comment.copy command. CodeRabbit's second round on storytold#3484. A reply to a selected comment that has no /NM (other tools leave it out) was exported without inreplyto, since the lookup knew names from /NM only, and the pasted reply stood alone. A selected annotation without a name now gets one for the export (pdfcraft-<page>-<index>, kept clear of the document's names), written as the element's name and used for its replies' inreplyto; the paste's fresh names map it like any other. Existing /NM values are untouched, and the whole-document export is unchanged. Test: crates/xfdf/src/tests.rs::replies_to_a_selected_comment_without_a_name_follow_it_into_the_copy. 🟡 Minor · Include direct annotation names in synthetic-name allocation. · lib.rs:312-335
crates/xfdf/src/lib.rs:312-335
🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winInclude direct annotation names in synthetic-name allocation.
When a direct page-array annotation has
/NM = pdfcraft-{page}-{index}, this loop does not add that name totakenbecause direct annotations have noObjRef. A selected unnamed indirect parent at that position can therefore receive the same export name.If the direct annotation appears first, copy import maps the duplicate name to that annotation. The selected parent’s reply can then attach to the copied direct annotation instead of the copied parent.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
Code-only review at e250daf; no CI has run on this head yet. I read the whole source diff (the i18n catalogue lines aside).
Two defects to fix:
-
Dragging a selected comment that is not the primary one drops the primary from the selection. In
select_input(crates/ui-egui/src/comments.rs, theGesture::Movestart), when the grabbed comment is already selected the code doescv.selected = Some(grabbed); cv.also.retain(|k| *k != grabbed). The previousselectedis never pushed intoalso. With A, B and C selected (C primary, as after two Ctrl-clicks), dragging A leavesselected = A, also = [B], so C stays behind and the Batch moves two comments instead of three. It also contradicts the comment above it ("Dragging one of several selected comments moves them all"). Keep the old primary:if let Some(prev) = cv.selected.replace(grabbed) { cv.also.push(prev) }, then removegrabbedfromalso. No test drags a non-primary member of a multi-selection; please add one. -
⌘V with unrelated text on the system clipboard starts a comment paste. In
copy_key(crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs),from_systemisSomeonly for XFDF, but the next line pastes wheneverfrom_system.is_some() || self.comment_clipboard.is_some(). If someone copies comments, then copies a word in another app and presses ⌘V in the viewer, the old comments hang on the pointer. The comment above says a non-XFDF text should not trigger it; the code lets any text through. Only fall back tocomment_clipboardwhen the pasted text is empty. The test covers the empty-string paste and "just text" with no in-app clipboard, but not "just text" with one.
Smaller points, no change required to merge:
annots_with_repliesnow carries the old/// Every comment as an XFDF element…doc line plus two near-identical paragraphs, andxfdf_annotshas no doc comment.- This bundles three features: comment copy/paste through XFDF, multi-select with group move and delete, and Complete/Undo last point/Cancel in the context menu. Splitting them would make each easier to review.
|
This PR covers the Ctrl+click selection and bulk-delete parts of a review workflow I need. The remaining request is to apply colour changes to every selected annotation, rather than only the last-selected annotation. Shift+click range selection in the Comments panel would also help select consecutive comments. The PR already lists this as a remaining limitation. If these additions are outside this PR's scope, could they be tracked as follow-ups? |

…s only over an empty clipboard FredApps' review of storytold#3484: - Dragging one of several selected comments that didn't have the handles dropped the one that had them from the selection (it was replaced, not kept), so with A, B and C selected a drag on A moved two of them. The grabbed one takes the handles and the previous one stays selected. Test: dragging_any_selected_comment_moves_the_whole_selection. - ⌘V with any text on the system clipboard pasted the comments copied earlier: a word copied in another app since started a comment paste. XFDF with comments on the system clipboard pastes those; the app's own copied comments paste only when the system clipboard holds nothing legible. The paste test now covers a word with comments copied before. - Doc comments: annots_with_replies had three overlapping paragraphs, xfdf_annots none. anssariworks on storytold#3484: in the Comments panel, ⇧-click selects the cards from the one with the handles to the one clicked (CommentView::select_range); ⌘/Ctrl-click still adds one, and on the page ⇧-click adds one as before. cv.selecteddirectly and leavescv.alsounchanged. With several comments selected, this causes two failures:
- Right-click on an unselected comment: that comment becomes primary, and the earlier selection stays in

There was a problem hiding this comment.
Re-review at SHA cb43fad (my last APPROVE was at 5489da4). The hosted run tested a different base, so the gate is the fork CI of the same head and target (FredApps#15). Gate is green.
What changed: the author rebased onto main's module split, so about 750 diff lines differ from my baseline. I compared them at content level: the XFDF code (crates/xfdf/src/xfdf.rs, lib.rs) and the ui-egui file moves (comment_props, comments_panel, tools/comments/*) are moves of code that is already in main, not new behaviour. The behaviour that belongs to this PR, which I read in full:
Edit::PasteComments(engine): runspdfcraft_xfdf::import_commentswith a prefix from the edit's own id, so copies get new names and pasting twice gives two sets; an empty import is anInvaliderror. It is listed with the other annotation edits incheck_permissionand inscope_of, and has an edit label.Session::export_comments: exports the chosen (page, index) comments with their replies as XFDF.copy_key,copy_selected_comments,paste_comments(app/clipboard.rs): text selection wins over comment copy; paste only reads the system clipboard when it is XFDF with comments (so a word copied elsewhere is not replaced by stale comments), and checksallows_annotationfirst. With no target the bundle hangs on the pointer (Gesture::Place) and a click places it; Escape or right-click cancels.- Multi-select (
CommentView::selection,toggle,select_range,select_only,clear_selection): ⌘/⇧-click, grab-and-drag keeps the group, and Move and Delete become oneEdit::Batch, deletions in descending order so indexes stay valid.quick_barcolour now applies to the whole selection.
Checked: the permission and scope wiring, the index ordering in the batched delete, the Place gesture bounds notice, and that the tests cover the multi-select delete and the copy/paste round trip by name.
Not verified: I did not run anything locally; the tests were read, not executed. A small nit, not blocking: in state.rs the doc line "Copied pages: …" now sits above CommentClip and PageClip has lost its doc comment.
Hosted fork CI validated upstream head cb43fad merged with target 7555be3. Test candidate 2b240c8 differs only in fork workflow configuration. SonarCloud excluded.

… connected lines from the menu
Comments copy and paste, within and between documents. ⌘C with comments selected (and no text
selected) copies them, each with its replies, as XFDF: into the app's clipboard (every tab and
window) and as text onto the system clipboard. ⌘V, Edit ▸ Paste comments or the page's context
menu pastes them onto the current page at their own positions, as new comments under names of
their own, so nothing is replaced and pasting twice gives two sets; the copies are selected.
XFDF with comments from the system clipboard pastes too, so comments travel between processes.
pdfcraft_xfdf::export_xfdf_comments writes a selection with its replies; import_comments takes
a target page and a name prefix and imports copies (the usual import still replaces same names).
Engine: Edit::PasteComments { xfdf, page } (one undo step, comment permission) and
Session::export_comments. Tools: comments_copy (read-only) and comments_paste.
Several comments select at once: ⌘-click (Ctrl on Windows and Linux) or ⇧-click adds one or
takes it out, on the page and in the Comments panel; the one clicked last has the handles.
Delete removes them all as one step, a drag moves them together, the context menu copies them.
Connected lines, polygons and clouds finish from the right-click menu's Complete (with Undo last
point and Cancel drawing), as other editors do, besides Enter and a double-click.

What this changes
Three things a reviewer working with comments across documents needs (parity
comment.copy-pasteandcomment.multi-select, both new andshipped;comment.export-selectedtopartial;comment.polylinenotes):How it works
pdfcraft_xfdf::export_xfdf_comments(doc, &[(page, index)], file)writes the selected annotations and, transitively, their replies (/IRT).pdfcraft_xfdf::import_comments(doc, text, page, fresh_prefix)imports XFDF comments as copies: every comment lands onpage(or its own), under<prefix>-<n>names when a prefix is given, withinreplytoremapped within the batch (a reply whose parent was not copied stands alone instead of attaching to a same-named comment the document happens to have). Field values in the text are ignored for a paste. The usualimportis unchanged (same names replace, as documented).Edit::PasteComments { xfdf, page, offset }(the copies moved by an offset in user space;pdfcraft_xfdf::comments_bounds/comment_count/comment_outlinestell what hangs on the pointer) (label "Paste comments",Scope::Comments, needs the comment permission likeAddAnnotation; the names come from the edit context's id generator, so they are unique within the document) andSession::export_comments(id, which). A paste that adds no comment is refused as an error, so a stray text never produces an empty undo step.comments_copy {doc, comments: [[page, index], …]}→{xfdf, comments}(read-only) andcomments_paste {doc, page, xfdf, at?}(undoable;atcentres the bundle there, incomment_add's page coordinates).CommentViewkeepsselected(the one with the handles) andalso(the others) withselection(),is_selected,select_only,toggle,clear_selection; the clipboard isPdfCraftApp::comment_clipboard(CommentClip { xfdf, count }); registry commandscomment.copy/comment.paste(Edit menu). ⌘C/⌘V arrive as egui's Copy/Paste events and are left to a focused text field; the Organize grid keeps ⌘V for pages. Not yet
Appearance streams and file attachments' data are not carried (the copies are drawn again; an attachment comment is copied without its file); a rubber-band selection; ⇧-click as a range in the panel; Export selected comments to a file from the interface (the tool and the clipboard have it).
