What this changes

With a comment selected, the arrow keys scrolled the view (↑ ↓) or turned the page (← →), so a text box, rectangle or line could only be placed with the mouse. Now:

  • an arrow key moves the selected comment one screen pixel, and ⌘/Ctrl or Shift and an arrow ten, as Edit text already nudges objects (Unable to move rectagles containing text #1520);
  • up is up on screen whatever the zoom, the page's /Rotate and the view's rotation (the step is one screen pixel mapped to user space, so it follows the zoom: fine steps when zoomed in, visible ones on a zoomed-out A0 plan);
  • each press is one undo step (Edit::MoveAnnotation, "Move comment");
  • the keys are taken before the view's navigation, which has them back as soon as nothing is selected (Escape);
  • text markup stays with its text, a locked comment where it is, and nothing moves while a text field has the keyboard.

New parity entry comment.keyboard-nudge (P2, shipped; headless through comment_edit move), docs/ui-parity.md row extended.

How you verified it

  • cargo fmt --all -- --check, cargo clippy -p pdfcraft-ui-egui --all-targets -- -D warnings
  • cargo test -p pdfcraft-ui-egui --test comments (52), cargo xtask parity

Test crates/ui-egui/tests/comments.rs::arrow_keys_nudge_the_selected_comment: a rectangle selected with the Select tool moves one pixel right with →, ten pixels down with ⌘/Ctrl+↓ and ten left with Shift+←; the page doesn't turn; each press is its own undo step; after Escape, → turns the page again and the rectangle stays.

Never-crash

No new unwrap/expect/panic!; a non-finite step (degenerate page transform) does nothing.

Provenance / Security

No assets, no copied code; keyboard behaviour after Acrobat's and the app's own object nudge.

Anything a reviewer should look at first

With #3484 (several comments selected) the arrow keys should move the whole selection, as one "Move comments" step. That is a few lines on top of whichever of the two lands second; I have it working on a branch with both and will send it then.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Move a selected comment with the arrow keys: each press nudges it by one screen pixel, or ten pixels when holding ⌘/Ctrl or Shift. Movement follows the screen, even when the page is zoomed or rotated, and each nudge can be undone separately.
    • Text markups and locked comments cannot be nudged. With no comment selected, arrow keys continue to navigate pages or scroll.

📝 Walkthrough

Selected comments can now be moved with arrow keys. Each press moves the comment by one screen pixel, or ten pixels with Command/Ctrl or Shift. The change also records the behavior in tests, the roadmap, and parity documentation.

Changes: Comment keyboard nudging

Layer / File(s) Summary
Nudge input and edit wiring
crates/ui-egui/src/comments.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs
Eligible selected annotations move by one or ten screen pixels. The movement is converted to user-space coordinates and queued as a MoveAnnotation edit.
Nudge tests and behavior records
crates/ui-egui/tests/it/comments.rs, parity/acrobat-features.toml, docs/ui-parity.md, ROADMAP.md
The integration test checks movement, modifier distances, undo steps, and page navigation. The parity records and roadmap describe the nudge behavior.

Rebased on main; only the parity entry, the UI parity table and the test file needed merging. It merges cleanly with today's main (39844f06).

863-905: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Add transformed-view coverage for comment nudging.

comments::nudge_keys converts one- and ten-screen-pixel offsets through screen_to_view and view_to_user, and its contract covers zoom and page/view rotation. arrow_keys_nudge_the_selected_comment only runs at the default transform. The at helper also assumes no rotation. Existing zoom and rotation tests cover other comment operations, not keyboard nudging. A conversion regression can therefore pass undetected. Add a transform-aware case, such as 150% zoom with 90° and 270° rotation, and assert one- and ten-pixel movement in each screen direction.

Count every matching arrow press in the frame.

consume_key consumes all matching key events but returns only one boolean. When key-repeat events deliver multiple presses before nudge_keys runs, the code adds only one movement step, so later presses lose their movement. Use count_and_consume_key to add one step for each consumed press.

#### pub fn count_and_consume_key( &mut self, modifiers: Modifiers, logical_key: Key, ) -> usize

Count presses of a key. If non-zero, the presses are consumed, so that this will only return non-zero once.

Includes key-repeat events.

This uses `Modifiers::matches_logically` to match modifiers, meaning extra Shift and Alt modifiers are ignored. Therefore, you should match most specific shortcuts first, i.e. check for `Cmd-Shift-S` (“Save as…”) before `Cmd-S` (“Save”), so that a user pressing `Cmd-Shift-S` won’t trigger the wrong command!

#### pub fn consume_key(&mut self, modifiers: Modifiers, logical_key: Key) -> bool

Check for a key press. If found, `true` is returned and the key pressed is consumed, so that this will only return `true` once.

Apparently these events are only used internally by the text widgets, but I'm guessing a lot of people would like to have them by default and not have to implement them manually.

There's also undo and redo, which are not events but have hardcoded shortcuts in the `TextEdit`:

@wareya , here's my workaround for this issue, and the "any modifiers will do" approach egui (and many other) UIs take:

    /// similar to egui's `consume_shortcut()`, but with exact matching (not `logical_matching()` so
    /// users's fingers don't accidentally learn the wrong modifiers for shortcuts they try because
    /// they learned them in other apps, say, then report a bug when a new shortcut with those
    /// modifiers is created and they think the app broke).
    fn consume_key(input_state: &mut InputState, modifiers: Modifiers, key: Key) -> bool {
        let mut found = false;

        input_state.events.retain(|event| {
            let is_match = matches!(
                event,
                Event::Key {
                    key:       ev_key,

I tried consuming the key and then listening for the Key event with the modifiers, as some workarounds were suggesting, but it didn't work for me as the key was still never arriving. I switched to handling `egui::Event::Copy/Paste/Cut` events directly, which kinda worked but was firing intermittently, sometimes not at all. I just added frame based debouncing for each time one of those events was handled. That's the only thing that worked for my case.

    ` // call .tick() in event loop

consume_key behavior #1274

I have recently discovered this crate and was looking for ways to use modifiers. By looking at the demo I found the EasyMark editor that features toggles with ctrl/cmd + the corresponding key, which is very close to my use case. The editor makes use of `consume_key`, but when testing it, pressing the key B causes both the insertion of the letter B and the bold action to happen.
Pressing ctrl+B produces the expected behavior. As this may not be very clear I attached a screen capture to illustrate what happens. EDIT This happens only in DEBUG mode, in release mode the editor works fine. Wondering what causes the issue, but I have not been able to find it. I noticed that ctrl+Z works correctly, so I considered using the same approach as in `text_edit.rs`:

            if ui.input().modifiers.command_only() && ui.input().key_pressed(key) {
       [...]
            };

Instead of the one in `easy_mark_editor.rs`

            if ui
                .input_mut()
                .consume_key(egui::Modifiers::new().command(true), key)
            {
       [...]
            };

My guess is that either there is a bug in `consume_key` or EasyMark editor should use the same approach as `text_edit.rs`. I can reproduce the issue both in Linux and Windows and I am available for any further information.

Exclude Alt-modified arrows from comment nudging.

In egui 0.36.2, consume_key ignores extra Alt modifiers. Alt+Arrow can therefore match the Modifiers::NONE branch, and Alt combined with Shift or Command can match the modified branches. Exclude Alt before all nudge checks.

Update the arrow-key nudge checks in the comment movement logic to exclude input
whenever Alt is pressed. Apply the Alt guard to both the Command/Shift modified
branch and the Modifiers::NONE branch, leaving the existing step increments
unchanged.

Call comment nudging after object nudging.

When EditText is active on a document that allows modification, the else if prevents comments::nudge_keys from running. This state is reachable because entering Edit mode does not clear the selected comment. If no object or image is selected, the object handler does nothing, so arrow keys leave the selected comment unmoved. Use a separate if so object handling keeps precedence while comments still receive unconsumed keys.

Review comment at @crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs around lines 3026 - 3027:
In the key-nudging flow, change the `else if` following `object_ui::nudge_keys`
to a separate `if` for `comments::nudge_keys`. This lets comment nudging handle
unconsumed arrow keys when no object is selected, while preserving object
handling precedence.
