Final Report

The final research report should be structured like a full + lab report. An example of a great report evaluated the effect of layering on performance of activated carbon.

The best research projects include the following:

  • Data analysis that uses the methods that we learned in this course
  • Additional data analysis that goes beyond what we have done in previous lab exercises
  • Clear description of the methods so that the experiment could be replicated by others
  • design parameters given in logical units. For example, when characterizing the flow in a column experiment there are three possible ways to give that information
    • pump rpm (terrible option because you have to know the tubing size AND specific information about the pump head to convert this into a flow rate)
    • flow rate (lousy option because this doesn't scale to other sizes of columns)
    • velocity through the column (the right approach because this is the design parameter that would be used for any column size.
