BMA Bulletin 27 08 19
Three topics came up this week;
- These update notes
- Enabling a “classic” colour scheme as a stopgap for existing users migrating
- Ongoing development results.
Development meetings run weekly and are the main way that issues are raised and decisions are effectively made on the direction of the project. However, it is not always possible to attend the meetings, and the meetings are closed to external users so there’s no way to see into our process from outside. To ensure that everyone can be involved and aware Nir and Ben propose a weekly update summarising main development topics. These will be agreed after sending and uploaded to the GitHub wiki page for a permanent record, and broader accessibility.
The topic of wider user contributions came up, and possible plans for the future, including Omnipath integration, were discussed generally. As an initial rule it is felt that external additions to the console tool are easy to incorporate into the main repo, but that UI changing elements may have to be more carefully considered and possibly (re)designed to ensure compatibility with the goals of the GUI.
The update has involved the redesign of multiple elements of the UI, and includes a change in the default colour scheme. Some initial testing had led to feedback requesting an option to make the original colour palette available, particularly for those currently working to publish results who don’t want to change their figures. The first solution for this was to keep an old version of the offline tool available, but given that the feedback has come from multiple users we discussed adding a settings button to arbitrarily switch the colour scheme back. This is a user choice and not going to be designed explicitly (similar to other options, like curved interactions). Nikita indicated that this would be doable and would investigate adding the button over the next week.
Ultimately, Ben would like to add more powerful colour customisation options, in particular the ability to change the colour of individual and sets of icons in the graph to highlight biological pathways. This requires multiple updates to the site (with technical, design, and HCI issues arising) so will be addressed at a later point.
Nikita has made the following updates to the current test site http://bmanewdesign.azurewebsites.net/tool.html
- Found and fixed a bug with the model repository
- Fixed a scroll issue with the model repository
- Added export to zip icons and “eye” icon for hiding built in motifs Aside from the colour option, this site is regarded as being production ready and we hope to release in the near future.
He has also spent the past week updating and testing the build system. Over the next week he will investigate the “classic colours” option and continue work on the build system.
