Closes #1601

What changed and why

An editor scene could author SSR and SSGI, which run only on Deferred, but a game shipped through
Build Game always ran Forward: RendererSettings::Path defaulted to Forward and nothing in the
scene carried a path. The game booted, drew, and silently lacked every Deferred-only effect.

Per the decision recorded on the issue, the rendering path is now a scene render setting:

  • Scene stores a RenderingPath (default Forward); Scene::Copy carries it into Play mode.
  • SceneTransition::SceneRenderSettings gains Path. Capture / CaptureRenderer / Apply /
PublishToRenderer move it, so every host that activates a scene through
ApplySceneRenderSettings (editor open, Play-mode switch, runtime start, reload, script switch)
selects the scene's path. ApplyRendererSettings already rebuilds the graph on a path change, so
    no path-configure code changed.
  • .olo YAML writes RenderingPath: Forward|ForwardPlus|Deferred from both emitters (Serialize and
the asset-pack SerializeToYAML). A file without the key loads as Forward (every existing scene is
unchanged); an unknown value fails the load with the reason. The binary sidecar copies the key
with the other top-level settings; its settings commit now catches the throw and falls back to YAML,
    which reports it.
  • The activation seam logs [SceneTransition] Scene '<name>' renders on the <path> path (authored; was <path>) at INFO, so the selected path is visible in a shipped game's log.
  • RenderingPath.h gets ToToken / TryParseRenderingPath; the benchmark manifest's path parser
    now uses them too.

Editor. The live renderer settings are what a save writes (unchanged), so the scene saved carries
the path being viewed. The Rendering Path combo (and the Virtual Mesh "Switch to Deferred" button)
now record an undoable RenderingPathChangeCommand, so a path change dirties the scene like a
post-process change. AutoSaveScene now uses the same CaptureRenderer + tier-strip as an explicit
save instead of a hand-copied list that would have missed the path.

Which wins between a scene and an explicit MCP/test path request: the later action. Opening a
scene publishes its path (that is what makes it a scene setting, the same as post-process); a
renderpath write after the open overrides it for the session and is saved into the scene on the
next save. This is not silent: the activation logs the switch and olo_scene_open now reports
renderingPath. Every live script in scripts/ already opens the scene first and sets the path
after; benchmark manifests apply their path after the open, so a manifest path still wins.

Save-games do not snapshot the path: no script or runtime API can change it, and the scene file a
slot restores into carries it.

Verification matrix

Complete matrix: every cell of the HANDOVER grid. Live cells ran the packaged game
(TemporalBiasCooked, cooked by GameBuildPipeline::Build from
TemporalLongSequenceEvidenceTest.ExportFixtureForLiveAndCookedVerification, exe byte-identical to
bin/Release/OloRuntime built at this PR's head), captured with PrintWindow at 1920×1080. The pre-fix control is the Release runtime built from the base commit b76e5b4be. For transitions, six copies of the
fixture scene were staged in the package, each authored on one path, each with a Lua entity calling
Scene.LoadScene on the next 20–35 s later: Forward → Deferred → Forward → Deferred (SSR+SSGI off, the
A/B control) → Forward+ → Deferred. "Δ" = pixels differing by more than 8/255 (max channel delta).

Found and fixed

  • 748bc08 + 202297a fix(editor): the Post Processing panel stayed bound to the edit scene's undo history during Play, so a Play-time edit dirtied the scene and left an undo entry for values that Stop restores away. Play now unbinds both settings panels and Stop rebinds them; Simulate keeps them bound, because Simulate restores nothing and its edits persist. Found by the self-review. Evidence is static: the panels record only on ImGui interaction, which no MCP tool drives, and OloEditor is not in the test build.
  • 50a961d fix(scene): ApplySceneSettings checked the path after it had already applied the post-process and weather blocks, so a refused document applied onto an existing scene (DeserializeFromYAML, or Deserialize onto a live scene) failed with that scene's settings half-overwritten. The token is now validated first. UnknownPathFailsTheLoad applies every refused document, through both readers, onto a Deferred scene with exposure 3.0 and checks that both survive. Reported by CodeRabbit.
  • b182eff fix(editor): a Play refused for having no primary camera had already captured the renderer settings and armed m_RestoreRenderSettingsOnStop, so a later Simulate's Stop restored that stale snapshot over the edits in between, the rendering path included. Pre-existing since Runtime activation ignores authored scene postprocess and upscale settings #1563. The camera is now checked before anything changes. Live: open a camera-less scene → olo_scene_play ok:false → olo_scene_simulate → renderpath=deferred → olo_scene_stop → the path stays deferred. Reported by CodeRabbit.
  • 6dd587d docs(benchmark): the Courtyard scene, its generator and the three capture manifests said a capture manifest cannot toggle TAA. Manifest v2 can: golden and diagnostic set TAAEnabled, while hero does not and is captured without TAA. Comments only; no capture setting changed. Reported by CodeRabbit.
  • 526797a fix(docs): olo_foliage_rebuild (perf(foliage): stage warm rebuilds without blocking rendering #1603) had no row in the MCP guide, so McpDocsCoverage.EveryRegisteredToolAppearsInTheGuide and …EveryConsentGatedToolIsMarkedConsentedWriteInTheGuide fail on master (perf(foliage): stage warm rebuilds without blocking rendering #1603 merged with its CI cancelled). Found running the MCP suites; both pass after the one-row fix. The guide is also edited by feat(mcp): record per-frame CPU scopes for hitch diagnosis #1604 (the Live Vulkan editor: 0.65-2.1 s CPU hitches at the acceptance scene's outdoor cameras #1594 worktree, whose session was not live), so expect a one-line overlap there.

Filed, not fixed

None.

Review guide

Where I'd look hardest

  1. OloEngine/src/OloEngine/Scene/SceneSerializer.cpp (ApplySceneSettings, the RenderingPath block): it resets to Forward when the key is absent and throws on an unknown value. The throw is caught by Deserialize and DeserializeFromYAML (load fails with the reason) and, new here, by the binary sidecar's settings commit, which used to let any throw escape Deserialize. Check that no other caller of ApplySceneSettings runs outside a try.
  2. OloEngine/src/OloEngine/Scene/SceneTransition.cpp (PublishToRenderer now writes RendererSettings::Path): every activation host now switches the path. In the editor that means opening a scene replaces the path the user had selected. That is the decided semantics, but it is a visible behaviour change for anyone used to the session-global path. The 18 sample scenes that need a specific path now carry it, so they open correctly.
  3. OloEditor/src/EditorLayer.cpp (settings-panel history binding in OnScenePlay / OnSceneStop): Play restores renderer settings at Stop, so Play-time edits must not be recorded; Simulate restores nothing, so its edits must be. Only the two settings panels are bound this way, since BindPanelsToScene is shared by Play and Simulate.

What I verified, and how. The pre-fix runtime (built from this branch's base) on the same cooked package draws a frame identical to Forward (0 px differ); the fixed one draws the SSR/SSGI bounce (77 % of pixels differ). That is the check that fails if the chain breaks anywhere between save and runtime activation. AuthoredPathSelectsTheGraphThroughSceneActivation checks the graph, not the setting: the SSR/SSGI targets exist only after a Deferred activation and are gone after a switch away.

Least confident about. Vulkan pass engagement in the packaged game is shown by a pixel A/B against a Deferred control with SSR/SSGI off, not by a pass query, because the runtime has no MCP. And a game whose start scene is Deferred configures the Forward graph at renderer init and rebuilds it on activation. I accepted that one extra configure rather than loading the scene before the renderer exists.

An editor scene could author SSR and SSGI, which run only on Deferred, but a
game shipped through Build Game always ran Forward: nothing in the scene
carried a path, so the runtime kept RendererSettings' Forward default and
silently drew without them.

The scene now stores a RenderingPath, written to and read from the .olo (both
emitters, so the asset-pack form carries it too) and moved by
SceneRenderSettings, so every host that activates a scene through
ApplySceneRenderSettings selects it: editor open, Play-mode switch, runtime
start, reload and script-driven switch. A scene without the key renders
Forward; an unknown value fails the load instead of silently becoming Forward.
The activation logs the path it selected, and olo_scene_open reports it.

In the editor the path combo and the Virtual Mesh "Switch to Deferred" button
now record an undoable change, so a path change dirties the scene like a
post-process edit, and the auto-save takes the same capture as an explicit
save instead of a hand-copied list that would have dropped the path.

…cene undo

SetEditorScene bound the Post Processing panel (and now the Renderer Settings
panel's path combo) to the edit scene's command history, and nothing unbound
them for Play or Simulate. An edit made while playing was pushed onto the edit
scene's history and marked it dirty, although Stop restores the settings
captured at Play: the scene then showed unsaved changes it did not have, and
Undo/Redo re-applied the Play-time values over the edit session's.

BindPanelsToScene already hands every scene-observing panel a null history in
Play and the edit history back at Stop; the two settings panels now take the
same binding.

Found by the self-review of #1601.

… for

Eighteen sandbox scenes exist to show something that runs on one path only
(SSR, SSGI, contact shadows, decal modes, FSR2, virtual geometry, VSM, the
ray-traced reflection tier, the Forward+ light-count stress), and their
headers told the user to switch the path by hand because it was not
scene-serialized. With #1601 opening a scene publishes its path, so without
the key they would now be forced to Forward on every open. Each carries its
RenderingPath and its header says so; Courtyard is changed through its
generator, whose output is otherwise byte-identical.

AssetContentValidity treats every key ending in "Path" as a file reference;
RenderingPath is a token, so it is excluded.

… test red

#1603 registered olo_foliage_rebuild (a consented-write tool) without a row in
the MCP guide, and merged with its CI cancelled, so
McpDocsCoverage.EveryRegisteredToolAppearsInTheGuide and
EveryConsentGatedToolIsMarkedConsentedWriteInTheGuide fail on master. Found
running the MCP suites for #1601. One row, next to the
olo_representation_streaming_stats row its description points readers to.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The previous commit unbound the settings panels' history through
BindPanelsToScene, which Simulate shares with Play. Play restores the renderer
settings captured at its start when it stops, so its edits must not be
recorded; Simulate restores nothing, so its edits outlive Stop and must stay
recorded and dirty the scene. The two settings panels are now unbound in
OnScenePlay only and rebound in OnSceneStop.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The scene loader's and the benchmark manifest's refusal messages list the
accepted path spellings from the same table the parser uses, and both editor
controls that change the path (the Rendering Path combo and the Virtual Mesh
"Switch to Deferred" button) go through ChangeRenderingPath instead of
repeating the write, apply and record steps. File > New records the live path
in the new scene, so the scene and the renderer agree before its first save.

🤖 Self-review @ 725977d22e1e37d56b7a111f797b97e96f5b4c0e

Reviewed the PR diff twice: at high effort before the first fixes, then at medium on the whole branch.

  • Findings: 19 · Fixed: sample scenes made for a non-Forward path now carry the key and their headers say so (18 scenes + the Courtyard generator); Play-mode settings edits no longer land in the edit scene's undo history, while Simulate edits stay recorded; BenchmarkCapture reuses ToToken; the refusal messages list paths from one table; one ChangeRenderingPath helper for both editor controls; File > New records the live path; the activation test's TearDown puts the live graph back; a failed load stops the GL activation test at its step; the lesson moved into its own guide.
  • Dismissed: MCP renderpath should dirty the scene — it would make the next olo_scene_open refuse under the dirty-scene policy, breaking every live script that switches path then opens a scene. Build Game ships unsaved path edits — the Build Game panel auto-saves the open scene first. Runtime builds the Forward graph before activating a Deferred start scene — avoiding it means loading the scene before the renderer exists, against ActivateScene's load-and-validate-first design; it is one graph configure at startup. Reset to Forward when the key is absent — that is the decided semantics, and it keeps a partial apply from leaving a stale path. Sidecar now catches every settings exception — before, any throw there escaped Deserialize uncaught; now the YAML load reports it and rewrites the sidecar. INFO log on every activation — deliberate, so a shipped game's log always states its path.

📝 Walkthrough

Scenes now store their rendering path and apply it during activation. Editor controls and MCP results expose the path, benchmark files use shared path tokens, and sample scenes declare their required paths.

Editor path changes use undoable commands. MCP scene-open output reports the selected path, and MCP descriptions document how opening and saving scenes affect it.
Benchmark path tokens
OloEngine/src/OloEngine/Renderer/Benchmark/BenchmarkCapture.cpp, OloEngine/src/OloEngine/Renderer/Benchmark/BenchmarkManifest.cpp
Benchmark output and manifest parsing use shared rendering-path token helpers. Invalid manifest values report the accepted tokens.
Sample scenes and rendering-path guidance
OloEditor/SandboxProject/Assets/Scenes/*, OloEngine/tests/scripts/generate_courtyard_scene.py, docs/agent-rules/*

Clear the Play restore flag when Play cannot start.

If Play fails because the scene has no primary camera, this return leaves m_RestoreRenderSettingsOnStop set. A user can then enter Simulate and select a rendering path. When Simulate stops, OnSceneStop() restores the snapshot from the failed Play attempt, but the path-change command remains in the editor history. A subsequent save records the old path. Clear the flag on this failure path, or restore and clear the snapshot before returning.

ApplySceneSettings validated the path after it had already applied the
post-process and weather blocks and reset the path to Forward, so
DeserializeFromYAML onto an existing scene returned false with that scene
half-overwritten. The token is now validated before anything is applied.
UnknownPathFailsTheLoad applies each refused document onto a Deferred scene
with a non-default exposure and checks both survive.

OnScenePlay captured the renderer settings, set m_RestoreRenderSettingsOnStop,
copied the scene and reset the renderer's histories before checking for a
primary camera, and the no-camera return left the restore armed. A later
Simulate's Stop then restored that stale snapshot over the edits made in
between, the rendering path included, while their undo entries stayed in the
history. The camera is now checked on the edit scene before anything changes,
so a Play that cannot start captures, copies and resets nothing.

Live check (Release editor over MCP): open a scene with no primary camera,
olo_scene_play -> ok:false, olo_scene_simulate, renderpath=deferred,
olo_scene_stop -> the path stays deferred.

Reported by CodeRabbit on #1606 (pre-existing since #1563).

The scene, its generator and the three capture manifests said TAA could not
be toggled from a capture manifest. Manifest v2 can, and golden and diagnostic
set TAAEnabled; hero does not, so its frame is captured without TAA. The
comments now say that; no capture setting changes.

Reviewed the commits since the last self-review (725977d22..HEAD) at medium effort.

  • Findings: 8 · Fixed: the failed-Play path now validates the camera before capturing, copying or resetting anything, replacing a flag-clear patch (this also answers CodeRabbit's outside-diff finding on EditorLayer.cpp:5063); the serializer comment now claims only what holds (a refused path changes none of the scene's settings); UnknownPathFailsTheLoad covers the file reader as well as the asset-pack reader; the Courtyard FXAA comment no longer calls golden/diagnostic frames AA-free.
  • Dismissed: full transactional loads (parse everything into locals, commit at the end) — entity-load failures already return false into a scene that every caller discards; the hoist covers the new failure this PR adds. Removing hero's Warmup.PerFeature TAA: 8 — it would change the hero capture's warm-up length, and this commit deliberately changes no capture settings.
