Per-frame MCP polling hid the Vulkan hitch symptom in #1594. olo_perf_cpu_scope_ring now records bounded in-process CPU events while natural application frames run, then exports a chronological snapshot inline or to sandboxed JSON. Names, nesting, worker threads, timestamps, incomplete events and loss remain visible. GPU observations retain identity and validity; snapshot encoding and file I/O run off the main thread. Render-graph pass scopes narrow large RG::Execute spans.

Refs #1594. The original recurring 0.65–2.1 s outdoor CPU-only hitch was not reproduced or fixed in the uncontended campaign. Early post-arm/setup stalls were narrowed to ShadowPass and GroomPass, with elevated same-frame GPU work; CPU wall spans can include waits. Recorder overhead is measured, but negligible Vulkan pacing impact is inconclusive. These are the remaining primary-issue limits, not claimed acceptance passes. The bundled #607 baseline breakdown item passed all four cells and its body checkbox is ticked.

The camera sampler also now waits for completed renderer frames and validates history generation, rejecting reset or unwritten histories. Ten regression tests cover throttling, long hitches, resets and bounded stalls; a dedicated CI check runs them.

The default MCP catalogue now lists 7 builtin tools / 12,922 bytes / ~3,231 estimated tokens, about 72% smaller than the failing 46,101-byte catalogue. The enforced ceiling drops from 46,000 to 16,000 bytes, leaving about 3 KB of room. Scene summary, performance/liveness and logs remain up front with the four discovery tools; ten detailed inspection tools are fetched on demand with their complete descriptions, schemas and annotations. Known names remain directly callable, and user-provided tools remain listed.

Verification matrix

Complete HANDOVER axes below. Live tests used an exclusive host lease, zero decoder activity in before/after probes, no competing editor/build/test process, 1920×1080 rendering at scale 1, VSM on, debug draw/throttling/autosave/frame cap off. Preferences were restored. Original five-camera sweeps retained 105 windows across three repeats; final-binary checks retained 14 outdoor windows. Each camera window has 120 samples. Units below are milliseconds; populations and threshold semantics are separate in the analysis report.

Axis Cell Evidence / result
Recorder Arm/disarm/rearm; epoch tokens; wrap/loss; late worker completion; owning names/nesting; bounded storage PASS — final-recorder-contracts.xml, CpuScopeRing/McpCpuScopeRing contracts
Recorder Threshold/context selection; GPU identity, delayed and invalid observations PASS — same contract XML; live audits retain validity rather than borrowing older GPU values
MCP Real registration, output schemas, annotations and docs coverage PASS — same XML, including McpOutputSchemaCoverage, McpToolAnnotations and McpDocsCoverage
MCP discovery budget Builtin core, profile arithmetic and deferred-tool discovery PASS — 7 of 162 tools, 12,922 bytes, below the 16,000-byte ceiling. All Mcp* CPU cases: 1,112 PASS, 5 expected context/privilege SKIP, 0 failures; McpExposureGateway.DeferredInspectionToolsKeepTheirCompleteSchemas verifies all ten deferred descriptors against the full catalogue
UTF-8 Export at complete and split multibyte name boundaries PASS — regression contracts; utf8-export-before.txt records real pre-fix JSON type error 316
Sandbox Lexical/canonical containment before filesystem side effects PASS — real NTFS-junction red/green sandbox-before.txt / sandbox-after.txt; outside directory created before=1, after=0. Contract symlink case SKIP because Windows lacks symlink privilege; separate real junction proof covers the behavior
Integration Renderer timing, scene controls/path activation and parallel render-graph recording PASS — final contract total: 87 PASS, 1 privilege SKIP, 0 failures across 88 cases
Camera sampling Completed frame identity, history generation, throttling, long hitches and bounded stalls PASS — 10 Python tests; sampler-review-before.txt records two pre-fix review regressions
Build Debug editor PASS — recorder-final-debug-build.log, exit 0; all 956 object dependency records OK
Build Release editor/tests PASS — sampler-final-release-build.log, exit 0; all 2,075 object dependency records OK
Master integration Merge 23dbff0a8, current source PASS — Release editor/tests and Debug editor rebuilt; OneTbbGuard checks 8 binaries/configuration; 87 contract passes, 1 privilege skip, 0 failures; ten sampler regressions pass. merge-integration-23dbff0a8.json and post-master23b-contracts.xml. Source reviews: 0 findings; timing results above/below remain pre-merge
Repository All-files pre-commit PASS — pre-commit run --all-files; publication run retained locally

#607 baseline Vulkan Forward+ frame breakdown PASS — complete response 0.4908403 s, baseline-frame-breakdown.json
#607 baseline Vulkan Deferred frame breakdown PASS — 0.4188550 s, same evidence
#607 baseline OpenGL Forward+ frame breakdown PASS — 0.4859583 s, same evidence
#607 baseline OpenGL Deferred frame breakdown PASS — 0.4434530 s, same evidence

Evidence paths are under docs/testing/evidence/cpu-scope-ring-1594. Camera rows: idle-host-camera-table/report.json and final-binary-attribution/report.json. Final overhead: idle-host-overhead-final/report.json, twelve raw histories, at least 1,200 completed render frames/run and the last 1,000 history samples/run. These are descriptive run comparisons, not calibrated confidence intervals. All final armed and disarmed retained histories stayed below the 300 ms diagnostic threshold, which is distinct from a frame-budget deadline. Scope audits of original/final camera windows, final traces and six final armed overhead captures report zero dropped events, overwritten frames, late completions or incomplete scopes; camera/trace audits report zero frames without renderer progress.

The measured campaign executable SHA-256 is 7A780F12BA0359D38761E8DD2F5050F88EA82121CEE6D32FB41C0CEE19B61631. These timings predate merge 23dbff0a8, which imports master 23b502eec's groom coverage and Deferred resolve changes; they are not post-merge pacing proof. The recorder and sampler sources are unchanged by that merge. The #607 checks used retained uninstrumented baseline b76e5b4be, SHA-256 371600405F60C19E4143150B5665F4340DFC0949DBBBF055B0F94C9464AFC783. Earlier contaminated traces remain functional evidence only, and initial overhead results retain their different binary hash. Legacy samples lack matching scope-frame IDs; no exact camera-event recorder frame marker was recorded, so early frames remain labelled post-arm/setup.

Found and fixed

  • ce8b932 — reject capture escapes before directory creation. Real NTFS-junction red/green proves the rejected path no longer creates directories outside the capture sandbox.

  • 56b1662 — recorder review corrections: destructive tool metadata, off-thread encoding/I/O, independent CPU/GPU identity and preservation of delayed/invalid observations. Named contracts pin these behaviors.

  • db4d9e4 — document the existing consent-gated olo_foliage_rebuild tool. Hosted failures identified its missing guide row; both documentation coverage contracts pass after correction.

  • 85a514e / 8e447b8 — correct evidence window/threshold labels and record verified sibling-editor overlap. Original legacy history was fetched after dumping and had no matching camera-event/frame IDs; these traces no longer imply identical populations or controlled timing.

  • 526755c — preserve valid UTF-8 at truncated scope-name boundaries during export. Real pre-fix JSON failure and two regression contracts cover the fix.

  • d74ffcc — replace estimated camera-window waits with completed renderer identity and history-generation guards. Reject throttled/old/reset histories without rejecting a valid long hitch; ten Python regressions and the new CI check cover the protocol.

  • 23dbff0 — resolve the master merge by consolidating overlapping foliage guide rows while preserving consent, terrain availability, asynchronous rebuild timing and error semantics. Post-merge builds, contracts and both source reviews pass.

  • 8242801 — fix the common ASan/UBSan/TSan Linux payload-budget failure (46,101 > 46,000 bytes), narrow default discovery and enforce the new 16 KB budget. Real-registry red/green, complete deferred-schema comparisons, 1,112 passing MCP tests, Release editor/tests build, all-files pre-commit and both review axes verify the fix.

Filed, not fixed

No new issues filed. Existing #1594 remains open because the recurring primary hitch was not reproduced, attributed or fixed; recorder overhead is measured with the limits above. Existing #1578 limits Hybrid shadow-TLAS coverage in this vegetation-heavy configuration. Neither is presented as a newly discovered implementation defect or a shipped fix.

Review guide

Where to look hardest: CpuScopeRing.h epoch/frame tokens and worker lifetime; application/renderer/GPU identity joins; McpToolsCpuScopeRing.cpp off-thread export and sandbox side effects; renderer-counter/history-generation checks in scripts/perf/acceptance-live.py.

Standards and Spec self-reviews cover the recorder, master merge, UTF-8, sampler regressions, per-pass scopes and final evidence. Remaining implementation/evidence findings: 0. Scope wall spans overlap across threads and are not additive. Least certain: the unobserved original hitch and Vulkan overhead tail variation; both remain explicitly incomplete/inconclusive above. The reusable sampling lesson ships as docs/agent-rules/completed-frame-perf-windows.md with both index links.

Canonical containment must be checked before touching the candidate parent.
An NTFS-junction negative control showed that a rejected capture path still
created directories outside assets/mcp-captures. Check before creation and
again afterward, and pin the outside-directory absence with a filesystem test.
Per-frame MCP polling hid the Vulkan hitch symptom in #1594. Add an explicitly
armed, bounded recorder behind the existing scope timers, with owned event
names, nesting/thread identities, loss counters, and threshold/context dumps.
Allocation is confined to arm and capture; JSON encoding and capture-file I/O
run off the game thread. Join retained delayed GPU observations at snapshot
time so filtering does not drop an available originating-frame measurement.

Add CPU contracts and document the perf tool. Live overhead, hitch attribution
and the bundled #607 breakdown measurements await the user's timing release.
Refs #1594.

Self-review @ 56b1662c2

Reviewed the current PR diff at high effort through Standards and Spec passes; both report 0 remaining concrete findings.

  • Findings: 4. Fixed capture containment before directory creation; destructive recorder metadata; filtered captures losing a delayed GPU result; and resolved invalid GPU samples being mislabeled pending.
  • Additional integration correction: read the GPU timer pool directly for UI-only loops, keeping skipped-renderer CPU values null.
  • Dismissed: the early transaction-eligibility concern was based on an incorrect premise. Undo=Unspecified already rejects transaction execution. MainMarshaled=false now accurately documents handler-side encoding and file I/O.
  • Validation: Release editor/tests build and 2075-object dependency audit passed. CPU filter: 45 passed, 1 symlink-privilege skip; separate real NTFS junction negative control changed outsideDirectoryCreated from 1 to 0. All pre-commit checks passed. Debug editor build is queued through the shared gate.
  • Live timing is held by the user. No overhead, hitch attribution/fix, remeasurement, or MCP: post-#357 follow-ups (script-tool tiers, live reload, C# tools) + capability-gap log #607 baseline result is claimed; this remains a draft.

Local verification complete at 56b1662c2: Debug OloEditor build passed with all 956 Debug object dependencies recorded. Release editor/tests build and 2075-object audit passed; CPU contracts remain 45 passed, 1 symlink-privilege skip backed by NTFS junction red/green. The verification matrix now has final local results and explicit user-held reasons for every unrun live cell.

Blocker: the user instructed "Continue implementation; timing must wait". Only the user can release the hold and reserve idle CPU/GPU time. Recorder overhead, hitch attribution/fix and remeasurement, plus the #607 baseline rechecks remain unrun. This remains a draft; Phase 6 is not claimed while CI is running.

Heads-up from #1606: master fails McpDocsCoverage.EveryRegisteredToolAppearsInTheGuide and …EveryConsentGatedToolIsMarkedConsentedWriteInTheGuide because #1603 added olo_foliage_rebuild without a row in docs/guides/mcp-diagnostics-server.md (it merged with CI cancelled), so this PR's Windows test shard will hit it too. #1606 adds the row (commit 526797a, one line after olo_representation_streaming_stats). Whichever of the two merges second may see a one-line overlap in that table.

Timing was released on 2026-10-13. Baseline b76e5b4 now returns frame breakdown successfully on all four Forward+/Deferred x Vulkan/OpenGL cells (0.42-0.49 s). The initial OpenGL timeout was an invalid minimized-window run and was rerun with liveness checks. CPU tracing and overhead measurements continue under the exclusive build gate. Terminal CI failures were traced to missing documentation/consent marking for existing olo_foliage_rebuild; that entry is fixed locally and both McpDocsCoverage tests pass. Changes will be pushed with the complete measurement/fix round.

Reviewed the recorder PR and all subsequent documentation/evidence/merge changes at high effort using parallel Standards and Spec reviews.

  • Findings: 0 remaining. Fixed capture-path side effects before containment rejection and the missing consent-gated foliage-tool guide row; resolved its duplicate-row merge conflict while preserving both prerequisites and the Agent writes gate.
  • Verified: post-merge Release editor/tests build, dependency audit all 2075 objects; 65 focused CPU cases PASS, one Windows symlink-privilege SKIP, zero failures; all pre-commit checks PASS. Master-baseline frame breakdown returned complete captures on Vulkan/OpenGL Deferred/Forward+ and MCP: post-#357 follow-ups (script-tool tiers, live reload, C# tools) + capability-gap log #607's body is checked with linked evidence.
  • Dismissed: initial transaction-metadata concern: unspecified undo already rejects transaction use; destructive tool metadata and off-thread encoding are explicit.
  • Live recorder traces prove retention/JSON operation only. Their host records contain decoder activity, so they do not prove uncontended overhead or a CPU-hitch fix. The user has now requested machine reservation; idle checks must pass before the fresh timing campaign starts.

Reviewed the PR diff at high effort through the final publication batch, with separate Standards and Spec reviews.

  • Remaining implementation/evidence findings: 0. Recorder, master integration, UTF-8 export, completed-renderer/history-generation protocol, per-pass scopes and final measurements reviewed.
  • Fixed: sandbox side effects before rejection; UTF-8 name truncation; camera windows that admitted old/throttled/reset histories; erroneous rejection of a valid long hitch; missing foliage guide row; ambiguous contaminated-trace windows and diagnostic thresholds.
  • Verification: Debug editor and Release editor/tests built (956/2,075 dependency records OK); 87 CPU contract passes, one Windows symlink-privilege skip, zero failures; real NTFS-junction proof; ten Python regressions; final all-files pre-commit passed. Committed final evidence includes 105 original camera windows, 14 final outdoor windows, two 65-second traces and three armed/disarmed pairs per backend.
  • Disclosed scope limits: recurring original Live Vulkan editor: 0.65-2.1 s CPU hitches at the acceptance scene's outdoor cameras #1594 CPU-only hitch not reproduced or fixed; negligible Vulkan overhead is inconclusive; Hybrid uses the existing shadow-TLAS fallback. Refs Live Vulkan editor: 0.65-2.1 s CPU hitches at the acceptance scene's outdoor cameras #1594, no closure claim.
  • Dismissed: none in the final additive review. Scope wall spans overlap and are not additive; legacy and scope populations remain separate.

The six pending commits are now published. PR-body evidence reflects this head. CI and review-thread resolution remain the live exit gate; this comment is not a formal approval.

Reviewed the additive master merge and evidence changes at high effort, with separate Standards and Spec reviews. Remaining source findings: 0.

  • Merge 23dbff0a8 incorporates master 23b502eec. The only manual conflict was the foliage tool guide; one row preserves consent, terrain availability, asynchronous preparation and error semantics. Recorder, profiler, per-pass instrumentation and sampler sources are unchanged.
  • Spec review requested one clarification: campaign timings predate the imported groom/Deferred changes. It is fixed in e9045cf7e and the report/PR body explicitly do not claim post-merge pacing proof.
  • Current source rebuilt Release editor/tests and Debug editor through the build lock. OneTbbGuard verified eight binaries per configuration. Focused contracts: 87 PASS, 1 Windows privilege SKIP, 0 failures; 10 sampler regressions PASS. Evidence: merge-integration-23dbff0a8.json and post-master23b-contracts.xml. All-files pre-commit passed before publication.
  • The existing master ci-full-checks profile is applied for the exact all-SUCCESS gate. The unfinished alternative CI reporting experiment is stashed and excluded.
  • Scope limits remain: original Live Vulkan editor: 0.65-2.1 s CPU hitches at the acceptance scene's outdoor cameras #1594 recurring CPU-only hitch unobserved/unfixed, Vulkan negligible overhead inconclusive, Hybrid shadow-TLAS fallback. Refs Live Vulkan editor: 0.65-2.1 s CPU hitches at the acceptance scene's outdoor cameras #1594; MCP: post-#357 follow-ups (script-tool tiers, live reload, C# tools) + capability-gap log #607 body item verified and ticked.

No dismissed findings. Current-head CI and fresh review-thread inventory remain required; this is not a formal approval.

ASan, UBSan and TSan Linux shards failed the core listing ratchet at 46101 bytes. Keep scene orientation, performance/liveness and logs plus the gateway up front; defer detailed inspection schemas without changing registration, dispatch or descriptors. The user requested substantially lower token usage, so reduce the ceiling from 46000 to 16000 instead of increasing it.

Measured builtin core: 7 tools, 12922 bytes (~3231 estimated tokens), down 72%. Verify all ten deferred tools through real-registry search/describe and exact full-descriptor equality. Release editor/tests build and 1112 MCP cases pass; 5 expected context/privilege skips. All-files pre-commit and Standards/Spec reviews pass.

Reviewed the incremental MCP budget fix against 7124d33f5 along Standards and Spec axes. Both report zero remaining findings; the stale test-header comment was corrected. Previous reviews cover the rest of this head.

The default now exposes three orientation tools plus four discovery tools, with complete inspection descriptors fetched on demand. Registration, dispatch, consent and result contracts are unchanged. Builtin payload is 12,922 bytes (~3,231 estimated tokens), down 72%; ceiling is 16,000 bytes. A lowered-budget red control failed before narrowing; all ten deferred tools pass real-registry search/describe and exact descriptor equality.

Validation: Release editor/tests build and all 2,077 object dependency records PASS; 1,112 MCP cases PASS, 5 expected context/privilege SKIP, 0 failures; all-files pre-commit PASS. The user's explicit push instruction superseded waiting for the previous healthy CI jobs. New-head hosted checks remain pending; no all-green/Phase 6 claim is made. The existing original-hitch and Vulkan-overhead limitations remain as disclosed in the PR body.
