For practical reasons we would like to have index level metrics in ES 2.x.
We will soon be upgrading to ES 5.x and beyond, but in the meantime we need this metrics support in 2.x as a stop gap, while we also try to get rid of an internally developed plugin.
I have done my best effort in backporting the functionality from the 5.x branch. Cherrypicking the relevant commits was rather complicated, so I went through the necessary changes manually instead.
The new metrics seem to be working as expected for 2.x when testing locally.
