What this changes

Refs #5530 (see the caveat at the end: not "Fixes" until the reporter's file confirms it).

hayro patch 14 (snap_minified_image, vendor/hayro/src/renderer.rs) shrinks an interpolated image once to its whole-pixel device rectangle and draws it 1:1, instead of shrinking it to a rounded-up size and resampling that a second time at a fractional scale and offset (the path its own comment says "blurs scans and photos"). It only accepted an upright transform (a > 0, d > 0, b = c = 0). So every image on a page under /Rotate 90, 180 or 270 — and any image placed turned or mirrored by its own matrix — still took the double resample. That matches #5530: the same scanned page matches PDFium upright and drifts and softens when rotated.

The snap now accepts every transform whose axes lie along the device's: the eight quarter-turns and mirrors. It returns the 1:1 transform that draws the shrunk raster from the snapped corner, with one source-axis step equal to a whole device pixel in whichever direction that axis runs. Skewed and freely rotated images keep the old path. The one call site now draws with that transform instead of a translation, and the vendor/README.md entry for patch (14) says what it covers.

How you verified it

Seen failing first. Oracle with no external reference needed: on a synthetic page whose crop box and scale put every page edge on a whole device pixel, a /Rotate turn is a pure pixel permutation, so the turned render turned back must equal the upright one. The image itself sits at fractional coordinates. Before the fix:

Every kind of image that reaches the snap, on main (same at 90, 180 and 270):

kind /Interpolate true /Interpolate false
8-bit grey worst 200, 72% of pixels identical
1-bit grey worst 217, 73% identical
stencil mask (/ImageMask, as CCITT scans often are) worst 194, 73% identical
image + soft mask of its own size worst 177, 65% identical
image + soft mask of another size worst 113, 64% worst 110, 16%

The last cell has no /Interpolate, but hayro patch 15 filters a shrunk soft mask of another size whatever the image asks, so that mask is snapped upright and was not when turned. With the fix, all 30 cases are identical (worst difference 0). The non-interpolated cases that were already identical stay in the test as guards.

  • New rotated_image_snap::a_shrunk_image_on_a_turned_page_is_the_upright_render_turned (--test it): the page-level oracle above, over all five kinds. Run case by case against main's renderer, exactly the 18 cases marked off above fail and the 12 guards pass.

  • New raster::tests::a_turned_or_mirrored_minified_image_snaps_to_whole_pixels: an image turned or mirrored by its own cm (quarter, half and three-quarter turns, and a mirror), checking its edges land on whole pixels, and a half-black image mirrored to check which side it faces. Reverting the fix makes each of the four matrices fail (21 soft edge pixels each), not just the first one the loop reaches; dropping the mirror in the snap fails the orientation check.

  • New renderer::snap_tests::a_skew_that_moves_a_far_edge_is_not_snapped (cargo test -p hayro), from review: the snap now measures how far the terms it drops move the far edges (at most SNAP_SKEW, a hundredth of a pixel) instead of a tolerance on the coefficients. Each skewed case fails on the old tolerance on its own.

  • Also from review: the snapped 1:1 transform is used only when the shrink produced the snapped size. A failed resize hands back the source raster, which the snapped transform would have drawn at source size. Not reachable without a target at the 2^28-pixel or 128 MiB scratch limits, so it is covered by reasoning; the fallback is the existing non-snapped path.

  • The existing upright test interpolated_minified_image_edges_snap_to_whole_pixels is unchanged and still passes. The upright branch computes exactly what it did (Affine::new([1, 0, 0, 1, x0, y0]) is the old translate(x0, y0)).

  • cargo fmt --check

  • clippy with -D warnings on hayro and pdfcraft-render

  • tests: pdfcraft-render (421 + 64), hayro (11), and the crates downstream of the renderer: pdfcraft-print (51), pdfcraft-engine (393 + 16), pdfcraft-automation (308), pdfcraft-optimize. Not run locally: pdfcraft-ui-egui, pdfcraft-cli (left to CI).

  • cargo xtask layers and cargo xtask assets

Never-crash

  • No new unwrap/expect/panic!/unreachable!/todo!
  • No indexing. The as u32 casts stay bounded by the existing < 1e6 edge check, and a zero or non-finite scale still yields no snap, as before (draw_image rejects non-finite transforms before reaching it).
  • No unsafe
  • Synthetic regression tests included

Provenance

  • No Adobe asset, no font files, no GPL/AGPL code
  • Behaviour from the repo's own existing patch (14), extended by geometry. The oracle is self-consistency (turned = upright turned), not another implementation's source.
  • No new asset (the test PDFs are generated in code)

Security

  • No path handling, MCP or network surface touched

Parity and reach

  • Not updated: a fidelity fix to rendering that already ships, with no new feature.
  • Reachable headlessly as before (page_render).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved rendering of minified images whose edges align with device pixels, including upright, mirrored, and quarter-turned images, for more consistent edge placement.
    • Improved consistency when rendering images on rotated pages, with turned results closely matching the equivalent upright rendering.
    • Preserved the original image transform when pixel snapping would produce incompatible raster dimensions, helping retain image content and sizing.

…storytold#5530)

hayro patch 14 (`snap_minified_image`) shrinks an interpolated image once
to its whole-pixel device rectangle and draws that 1:1, instead of
shrinking to a rounded-up size and resampling again at a fractional
scale and offset. It only accepted an upright transform (a > 0, d > 0,
b = c = 0), so every image on a page under /Rotate 90, 180 or 270 -- and
any image placed turned or mirrored by its own matrix -- still took the
double resample. That is storytold#5530: a scanned page that matches PDFium
upright drifts and softens when the same page is rotated.

The snap now accepts every transform whose axes lie along the device's
(the eight quarter-turns and mirrors) and returns the 1:1 transform
that draws the shrunk raster from the snapped corner, one source-axis
step a whole device pixel, in whichever direction that axis runs.
Skewed and freely rotated images keep the old path.

On a synthetic page (crop box and scale on whole pixels, image at
fractional coordinates), /Rotate 90, 180 and 270 renders turned back
differed from the upright render in 72% of pixels, by up to 200 grey
levels; now they are identical. Non-interpolated images were already
identical and stay so.

Add a mirrored case with an asymmetric source image. The current test cannot detect a flipped or dropped mirror.

a_turned_or_mirrored_minified_image_snaps_to_whole_pixels draws a uniform black image. A flipped uniform image looks the same, so the mirror matrix "-10 0 0 10 10.6 0.4" checks only the box edges. A regression that drops or inverts the mirror passes. The doc comment says rotated_image_snap checks which way the image faces. That test covers only /Rotate turns, with positive-determinant image matrices, so no test checks mirror orientation.

Add a mirrored case with an asymmetric source, such as a left half black and a right half white. Assert which side of the device box is black and which side is white. Sample pixels several device pixels away from the transition. Do not assert exact values at the boundary column. The 4:1 resampling output at that column has not been checked.

Also correct the doc comment so it does not claim that rotated_image_snap covers mirrored images.

Review of storytold#5640:

- The snap judged an image axis-aligned by a tolerance on its
coefficients (1e-4 of the scale). For a very wide image a skew that
small still moves the far edge by more than a pixel (40 000 samples
at 4e-5: 1.6 px), and the snap flattened it. It now measures what it
drops: how far each off-axis term moves the far edges, at most a
hundredth of a device pixel (SNAP_SKEW). Upright and turned alike.
- A resize that fails hands back the source raster at source size; the
1:1 snapped transform then drew it at that size. The snapped
transform is now used only when the shrink produced the snapped
size; otherwise the full transform, as before.
- The mirrored case of the edge test drew a uniform image, which looks
the same mirrored; it now also mirrors a half-black image and checks
which side the black lands on.

Also took the nitpick on a_turned_or_mirrored_minified_image_snaps_to_whole_pixels (a621a1d): its mirror case drew a uniform image, which looks the same mirrored, so it checked only the box edges. It now also mirrors a half-black image and checks which side the black lands on, sampling well clear of the transition. With the snap made to drop the mirror, the box-edge loop still passes and this new check fails. The doc comment no longer claims rotated_image_snap covers mirrors (/Rotate only turns).

Make half-pixel rounding consistent under rotation.

For an upright image spanning 0.5..10.4, this rounds the bounds to 1..10. On an 11-pixel page, a quarter turn reflects that span to 0.6..10.5, which rounds to 1..11. The turned image therefore gets a different resampled size from the upright image. Use an orientation-aware tie rule and add a half-pixel rotation case.

Reject skew that crosses a rounding boundary.

A displacement below 0.01 can still cross a half-pixel boundary. For two adjacent 40-pixel images with b = 0.0001, the shared edge moves from 0.498 to 0.502. Both images pass this check, but their snapped rows start at 0 and 1, respectively. This creates a visible step across the shared edge. Keep the original transform when a dropped term changes the rounded edge position.

The /Rotate oracle test drew one 8-bit grey image. Stencil masks (CCITT
scans often are one), 1-bit images and images with a soft mask reach
the snap through other paths, so it now draws all five: 8-bit and
1-bit grey, a stencil mask, a soft mask of the image's size and one of
another size. On main, every interpolated kind is off by 113-217 levels
over 63-73% of the image when turned, and so is a non-interpolated
image with a smaller soft mask (110 levels, 16%): hayro patch 15
filters such a mask whatever /Interpolate says, so it is snapped
upright and was not when turned. All are identical with the fix; the
other non-interpolated kinds were already identical and stay as guards.

ReviewerA — source-read COMMENT (not an approval)

I read the new test: an image placed turned or mirrored (by its own matrix or the page's /Rotate) snaps to whole pixels just as an upright one does (#5530). Before, only upright images were snapped, so a turned scan was resampled twice and every edge was a soft, blended pixel. The test draws a 40 by 40 black image under four matrices (a quarter turn, a half turn, three quarters, a left-to-right mirror) that all map it onto the box 0.6..10.6 by 0.4..10.4, and checks the edges, and which way a mirrored image faces; the comment points to rotated_image_snap in the integration tests for which way a turned page's image faces. A solid black image makes the edge test exact, and using four matrices exercises each orientation. The renderer change is in a part I did not fetch, so I cannot say how the snap is computed for a skewed (non-axis-aligned) matrix, which must not be snapped; add a case for a 30 degree rotation that checks the image is left alone. I have not run it, and no exact-head CI result exists for this head, so this is a source-read comment and not an approval. Nothing was run.

I ran nothing and have no exact-head CI result for this PR, so this is not an approval. Where a diff was long I read its code hunks rather than every generated or documentation line.

Merged — thank you, @MichaelMuClaude! Snapping quarter-turned and mirrored images, and measuring the dropped terms by how far they move the far edge rather than by a coefficient tolerance, is a careful fix. The rotated-page pixel-permutation test is a great oracle. I merged main into the branch twice to resolve the vendor/README.md row (#5491 landed in between).
