M12: a picture an XFA form links is drawn from the PDF's XFAImages name tree - #5393
A template's <image href="…"> with no picture written into it is now looked up in the PDF's /Names /XFAImages name tree, by the URI the template writes (XFA 3.3 pp. 257–258), and drawn. Before, it was left out.
Where it's looked up: only in that name tree. A link is never followed outside the file. The spec warns: "XFA processors using untrusted forms should only resolve URIs within the package."
When it's looked up: after the template is read and before it is laid out. This happens both when the form opens (render_into) and when the template is read again (template_of), so a picture keeps its size in the layout.
What's covered: draws, field values and captions, on the body pages and on the master pages.
What isn't: a link the file holds nothing for stays out, with the same warning as before.
The new code is crates/xfa/src/linked_images.rs. Value::Image now keeps the href it was linked by.
the_last_xfa_images_node_the_walk_reaches_gives_its_names: the 4,096th node still gives its names;
a_repeated_xfa_images_name_counts_against_the_walk: a Names array repeating one name 20,000 times ends the walk at the pairs limit, so the name after the repeats is not reached;
an_over_long_xfa_images_name_is_left: a 5,000-byte name is left, and the name beside it is read.
The limits on the pictures:
a_linked_picture_used_in_many_places_counts_each_place and pictures_kept_for_reuse_stay_under_the_total_whatever_the_number_of_names: copies and pictures kept for reuse both count against the total;
an_over_large_linked_picture_is_left_with_a_warning: a picture over the limit (512 bytes in tests) is left out with a warning.
a_linked_stream_that_is_not_a_picture_draws_nothing_and_warns: a name for a stream that isn't a PNG or JPEG is taken, and drawing it draws nothing and warns, as for a picture written into the template.
cargo fmt --check, and clippy -D warnings on pdfcraft-xfa and pdfcraft-engine.
cargo test passes:
pdfcraft-xfa: 140;
pdfcraft-engine: 382 + 16.
Regression
Every page of the 245 dynamic forms was rendered at 24 dpi on main and on this branch, and the checksums compared.
The 12 forms above change: each gets the pictures it links. Page counts are unchanged on every form.
With the open XFA layout PRs as well. The same comparison was run with #4608, #4662, #4664, #5109, #5124, #5145, #5153 and #5225 merged onto main, with and without this branch on top. Every form that differed was rendered a second time, to rule out the opening budget.
The same 12 forms change, and page counts are unchanged on every form.
No other form changes.
After the review fixes. The 245 forms were rendered with bea66e6 and with 8bb0475: all 245 render on both, and no page differs.
Anything a reviewer should look at first
Bounded input. The name tree is untrusted:
its walk is capped at 32 levels, 4,096 nodes, 4,096 names and 16,384 name-and-value pairs (a repeated name counted each time), with a seen-set against loops;
a name longer than 4,096 bytes is left before it is turned into text;
each picture is read once and capped at 32 MB, and all of them together at 128 MB.
No new network access. Only the file's own name tree is read.
…me tree
A template's <image href="…"> without inline data is now found in the
catalog's /Names /XFAImages tree, keyed by the URI the template writes
(XFA 3.3 pp. 257-258, "Storing Images Inside PDF"). Only that tree is
looked in; a link is never followed outside the file. The tree walk is
bounded (depth, nodes, names, a seen-set), and so are the bytes read.

Walkthrough
The XFA parser now retains image href values. A resolver looks up linked images in the PDF’s XFAImages name tree and fills empty image data before rendering or returning a parsed template.
Image values now include an optional href, which parsing trims and omits when empty. Rendering matches accept the added field.
Name-tree lookup and image resolution crates/xfa/src/linked_images.rs
The resolver traverses the PDF’s XFAImages name tree, reads eligible image streams within configured limits, and fills empty image data across the template. It returns deduplicated warnings.
Resolution integration and validation crates/xfa/src/lib.rs, crates/xfa/src/script.rs, crates/xfa/src/fixtures.rs, crates/xfa/src/tests.rs
Rendering and template extraction resolve linked images. Added fixtures and tests cover available and missing links, malformed or cyclic name-tree entries, deep branches, and aggregate image-size limits.

An untrusted PDF can now trigger substantial work and memory use while rendering a form or extracting its template. Cycle detection and image-size limits provide useful protection, but they do not bound all work performed before image loading. The supported impact is denial of service in the application processing the file; image links remain confined to that PDF.
Retained concerns
High · security · observed: The new eager name-tree traversal limits retained distinct names, not attempted pairs. Duplicate or invalid keys can therefore keep traversal running beyond the intended work budget; key conversion and retained-value cloning also occur outside image-byte accounting. Both rendering and template extraction invoke this traversal before determining whether any linked image is needed.
Medium · security · inferred: The linked-image size limit is not an end-to-end allocation boundary. A malicious name-tree value can reference a compressed non-image object, causing its containing object stream to be decoded before stream-type validation or the 32 MiB image limit applies. The existing default allowance is 1 GiB per decoded stream; this PR newly exposes that work through linked-image resolution.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — An attacker needs to supply a PDF processed through XFA rendering or template extraction, not gain additional application privileges. One document can drive the affected traversal and loading paths. The supported blast radius is availability and resource consumption in the processing application; service-wide, tenant-wide, or cross-document impact depends on deployment and isolation that were not supplied.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
observed — The retained denial-of-service finding concerns attacker-controlled Names arrays. Walk::pairs scans entries while only successful distinct insertions consume MAX_NAMES. Invalid or duplicate keys therefore evade that allowance, and repeated references to a Names array are not covered by the tree-node seen set. This processing is newly introduced by the PR.
inferred — A malformed linked-image value can also cause expensive object-stream loading before being rejected as a non-stream. Found::load resolves the object first; COS can decode its containing object stream using the document's allowance, which defaults to 1 GiB. Thus the later image limit does not contain all newly reachable allocation work.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The package-only resolution boundary is preserved: lookup uses only the supplied document's XFAImages tree, with no filesystem or network fallback. Cycle and depth controls contain recursive tree shapes, but they do not charge every name-pair attempt or constrain variable-size metadata.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Important countercontrols remain effective: ordinary stream decoding receives the image limit, raw streams check length before copying, and image handling checks dimensions and pixel counts. COS parsing also has per-object node and nesting limits. These controls reduce ordinary decode risk but do not establish a cumulative budget for the preceding name-tree traversal and object loading.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Apply cumulative work and allocation accounting before reference resolution, key conversion, and value cloning. Charge every attempted pair, including duplicates and invalid entries; bound metadata sizes; and carry a suitable allowance into underlying object-stream loading. Avoid indexing unrelated image names when the template has no unresolved image references.

Issue #5392 requires linked XFA images to load from the PDF catalog's /Names /XFAImages name tree. The PR adds bounded name-tree lookup, preserves image href values, resolves images before layout in render_into and template_of, and retains unresolved links when the PDF has no matching object. The changes cover draws, fields, captions, body pages, and master pages. The reported tests cover nested Kids, malformed and cyclic trees, missing and non-image objects, traversal limits, and image-size limits.

…ace a picture is used counts
- A name-tree branch past the depth limit is skipped; the branches
beside it are still walked (before, the walk stopped there).
- Every place a picture is put counts against the pictures' total,
since each holds its own copy: one large picture used in many places
can no longer hold a copy per place without limit.

Those kept bytes now count against MAX_TOTAL as well: past it, a name
not read yet is neither read nor kept, so a tree with many names holds
no more than the total however many names it has.

Bound Kids before deep-cloning and queueing its entries.

Bound Kids before deep-cloning and queueing its entries.
MAX_TREE_NODES limits popped entries, not queued entries. stack.extend(...) can therefore retain up to 4,194,304 children before the next limit check.
Borrowing only the Kids array is not sufficient. Document::resolve(&node) already deep-clones a direct node, including its direct Kids array. The Kids branch then deep-clones that array again in doc.resolve(k) and once more in .cloned(). A direct XFAImages root adds the earlier .cloned() in the tree extraction. This creates 2–4 full array-sized resolver allocations for a large reachable array, in addition to the COS parser's original allocation, plus the queued children. A parser-sized array can therefore retain millions of Object slots and exhaust process memory.
Refactor the initial XFAImages extraction, node handoff, and Kids traversal together. Keep resolved owners alive while borrowing arrays, avoid deep-cloning direct nodes when queueing them, and queue only children that fit within the remaining budget. Count already queued entries in that budget.

…ing its Kids
The walk queued every entry of a Kids array before checking the node
limit, and resolving a direct node or array deep-copied it (two to four
times for a direct tree). It now recurses (depth stays capped at 32),
borrowing each node from its resolved owner, and stops at the limit as
it goes: only the branch being walked is held.

@coderabbitai Re the outside-diff finding on names (bound Kids before deep-cloning and queueing): fixed in bea66e6.
The walk now recurses instead of queueing. Each node, Names and Kids array is borrowed from its resolved owner (with_resolved: a reference is followed, a direct object is lent as is), so nothing of the tree is copied but the names kept. The XFAImages root is taken the same way.
Only the branch being walked is held: depth stays capped at 32, and the node and name limits are checked before each kid, so the walk stops at the limit as it goes.
New test a_wide_xfa_images_kids_array_is_walked_in_order_within_the_limit: the logo's kid comes first, followed by 10,000 empty kids. It fails on the previous walk (which popped from the end and spent the budget before reaching the logo) and passes now.
an_over_deep_xfa_images_branch_does_not_stop_the_walk now lists the deep branch first, since the walk follows array order.

@mtlcl410 The inspected source addresses the original queueing and tree-copying concern.
names and with_resolved borrow the root, nodes, and arrays.
Walk::node checks the node and name limits before each child and retains the depth limit.
The wide-tree test places the logo first, followed by 10,000 children.
The deep-branch test places the deep branch first and checks that the sibling logo is still found.
These changes address the allocation-bounding concern from the repository’s existing safety guidance. I inspected the source and test assertions; I did not run the tests.

ReviewerA — source-read COMMENT (not an approval)
I read the first hunk of the fixtures: a form whose two draws link their pictures instead of embedding them, .\logo.png, which the PDF keeps in its XFAImages name tree (a small PNG, under a Kids node, as producers split the tree), and .\missing.png, which it doesn't (XFA 3.3 pages 257 and 258), and per the title a picture an XFA form links is drawn from that name tree. Resolving a link through the document's name tree (not the file system) is the right and safe behaviour: a linked picture must never be read from a path on disk or fetched from a URL. The name-tree walk is over untrusted data: bound the depth and the number of nodes, and detect cycles in Kids. A missing image must draw nothing and warn. I did not read the layout code. Add tests with the name tree split over several nodes, a cycle, a name that exists but is not a PNG or is huge, and the missing image. Nothing was run.
I ran nothing and have no exact-head CI result for this PR, so this is not an approval. Where a diff was long I read its code hunks rather than every generated or documentation line.
…d over-long names are left
A Names array repeating one name kept the walk going, since only new names
counted. Pairs are now counted, repeats included, up to 16,384, and a name
over 4,096 bytes is left before it is turned into text. The node limit no
longer skips the names of the node the walk has just reached.
Tests for a repeated name, an over-long name, the 4,096th node, a linked
stream that isn't a picture, and an over-large picture.

Thanks for the review. Each case you list now has a test, all in crates/xfa/src/tests.rs at 8bb0475:
Name tree split over several nodes:a_linked_picture_is_drawn_from_the_pdfs_xfa_images holds the logo under a Kids node; a_wide_xfa_images_kids_array_is_walked_in_order_within_the_limit and the_last_xfa_images_node_the_walk_reaches_gives_its_names (the 4,096th node still gives its names) cover wider trees.
A cycle:a_hostile_xfa_images_tree_is_walked_once_and_gives_nothing, with Kids that lead back to themselves; a seen-set ends it.
A name that exists but is not a PNG:a_linked_stream_that_is_not_a_picture_draws_nothing_and_warns. The stream is taken as the picture's data, and drawing it draws nothing and warns, as for a picture written into the template.
A huge one:an_over_large_linked_picture_is_left_with_a_warning (the limit is 32 MB, 512 bytes in tests). All pictures together are capped at 128 MB, each place a picture is used counted: a_linked_picture_used_in_many_places_counts_each_place and pictures_kept_for_reuse_stay_under_the_total_whatever_the_number_of_names.
The missing image: the first test also links .\missing.png, which the file doesn't hold; it draws nothing and gives one warning.
Depth and node bounds: 32 levels, 4,096 nodes, 4,096 names, and 16,384 name-and-value pairs with repeats counted; a name over 4,096 bytes is left. Tests: an_over_deep_xfa_images_branch_does_not_stop_the_walk, a_repeated_xfa_images_name_counts_against_the_walk, an_over_long_xfa_images_name_is_left.
Each new test was seen failing with its fix reverted or its limit loosened. pdfcraft-xfa passes 140 tests; fmt and clippy -D warnings are clean.
On the layout side, the 245 dynamic forms were rendered before and after this round of fixes, and no page differs.
Conflicts:
- crates/xfa/src/tests.rs: both sides added tests at the end of the file
(this branch's XFAImages name-tree tests; main's rotated-draw tests).
Kept both, closing the branch's last test before main's helpers.

Every page of the 245 dynamic forms was rendered at 24 dpi on main and on this branch, and the checksums compared.
With the open XFA layout PRs as well. The same comparison was run with #4608, #4662, #4664, #5109, #5124, #5145, #5153 and #5225 merged onto main, with and without this branch on top. Every form that differed was rendered a second time, to rule out the opening budget.
After the review fixes. The 245 forms were rendered with bea66e6 and with 8bb0475: all 245 render on both, and no page differs.
Anything a reviewer should look at first
