fix(redact): measure glyphs against marks with at most one em of height - #5281
Redacting text on one line could delete glyphs on the next line, outside the filled box, when the lines are set solid (line spacing = font size). SECRET word here under a marked Account: 12345678 became SECRET.
A mark made from a text selection covers the selected line's em box: text selection measures each glyph from descent −0.2 to ascent 0.8 em (crates/render/src/text/device.rs). The redactor measured the same glyphs from the font's own descent to ascent, which is taller than one em for many fonts (Monaco 1000 / −250, and the 0.9 / −0.25 fallback): up to 1.5 + 0.6 em after the clamp in crates/fonts/src/pdf.rs. With 12 pt lines, the line below's glyph box then reached about 2 pt into the mark, past glyph_hit's 1 pt threshold, and those glyphs were removed while the fill only covered the mark.
show now measures a glyph against marks with its descent-to-ascent box scaled to at most one em (em_box). Fonts whose box is one em or less (the redact tests' font, 800 / −200) are unchanged, and the overlap rule itself (a fifth of the glyph or a point, both ways) is unchanged. The hidden-text rule (Remove Hidden Information) still uses the full box. The crate README says how the glyph height is taken.

Solid leading is most common in small text (forms, fine print), where a size threshold keeps the 1 pt rule, and a fifth of a large glyph's height lets a mark cover several points of its letters without removing them. Scaling the box to one em changes neither the threshold nor fonts of one em or less.
Never-crash
No new unwrap/expect/panic!/unreachable!/todo! outside tests
No indexing or slicing with input-derived positions; em_box divides only by a height above 1
No unsafe
Provenance
No assets, fonts or copied code. Behaviour comes from the specification and black-box observation.
Anything a reviewer should look at first
The trade-off is at the top and bottom of tall glyphs. A font whose ascent reaches past 0.8 em (accented capitals) now has that part of its box outside the measured em box, so a mark that only touches that strip by more than a point no longer removes the glyph. That is the same box text selection uses, so a mark made from a selection is unaffected; a hand-drawn rectangle that covers a glyph by more than a point inside its em box still removes it.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Improved text redaction precision when font metrics include extra vertical spacing. Glyphs on adjacent lines are less likely to be removed when they do not overlap a redaction mark, while glyphs intersecting the mark remain subject to redaction.
New Features
Redaction reports now count glyphs retained because their one-em boxes do not overlap a mark, even if their full font boxes do.
Documentation
Clarified how glyph height is measured and noted that ink extending beyond the one-em box may remain in the file.
A mark made from a text selection covers the selected line's em box
(descent -0.2 to ascent 0.8). The redactor measured glyphs from the
font's descent to ascent, which is taller than one em for many fonts,
so with lines set solid the line below reached about 2 pt into the mark
and lost the glyphs under it, outside the filled box.
The overlap test now scales that box to one em when it is taller. Fonts
of one em or less, the overlap rule and the hidden-text rule are
unchanged.
Fixesstorytold#5255
9 pt lines set solid in a 1000 / -200 font keep the line below a mark
(the line below reached 1.8 pt into it). A mark over the lower 3.8 pt of
24 pt letters still removes them, so no glyph stays in the file under a
partial box.

Walkthrough
Redaction-region matching now uses glyph bounds capped at one em. The report counts glyphs retained when their full font boxes overlap a mark but their normalized boxes do not. Regression tests cover line spacing and partial glyph overlap.
Changes: Glyph redaction overlap
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Normalize and validate glyph overlap crates/redact/src/lib.rs, crates/redact/src/interp.rs, crates/redact/src/tests.rs, crates/redact/README.md
Glyph hit testing uses normalized ascent and descent for redaction regions. The report counts retained glyphs whose full font boxes overlap a mark. Tests cover line spacing and partial glyph overlap; the README documents the normalized height rule.
Redaction can report success while text associated with the marked region remains extractable, so flagged results require review before completion.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 71129
The change prevents accidental deletion of neighboring lines, but fonts can draw outside the reduced matching area. Marked text in that area could remain recoverable after redaction succeeds; the new count is advisory rather than a safety gate. Existing rollback on errors remains intact.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: For glyphs that actually paint into a mark outside their normalized one-em box, redaction can retain recoverable text and still pass verification. The new retained-overlap count does not prevent successful commit, so the previous conservative removal guarantee is weakened.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The affected confidentiality scope is text retained in documents processed through the existing redaction API and subsequently shared. Exposure requires actual glyph ink in the discarded portion of the metric box and a mark that misses the normalized bounds; the count alone does not prove disclosure.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A PDF containing out-of-em glyph ink can cross the redaction control with marked source text intact: the normalized predicate misses, the glyph bytes survive, and verification repeats the same predicate. Full-box-only overlap previously triggered removal. This is a conditional attack path, not a verified malicious document.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The relevant trust transition remains document-controlled font metrics entering the trusted content-removal decision. The new report field is diagnostic output, not new document ingress or authority, and no glyph-outline intersection check is performed in the changed decision.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Rollback is triggered by errors, not a nonzero retained-overlap count. Repeating the same geometry does not strengthen the predicate; the regression demonstrates removal of previously retained text only after adding a mark that reaches its normalized box.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Provide an explicit strict policy for full-box-only hits, using conservative rejection, caller acceptance, or ink-aware validation before successful commit. Preserve the distinction between harmless metric padding and genuinely retained marked ink.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names the main change: redaction now measures glyphs against marks using a descent-to-ascent box capped at one em. It matches the raw summary (em-normalized font box in interp.rs, new em_box behavior) and the PR objectives (#5281 / issue #5255). The title is specific and concise. It uses the conventional fix(redact) prefix.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template's main sections: What this changes (with Fixes #5255 and the behaviour change explained), How you verified it (fmt, clippy, tests, and a before/after table of new tests), Never-crash checklist, Provenance checklist, and Anything a reviewer should look at first (the trade-off at glyph box edges). Some template items are not addressed: the Security section, the Parity and reach section (parity/acrobat-features.toml and automation tool reachability), and the 'Tests' note on confirming the fix-before-test failure is partly covered by the table. The description does not state whether docs were updated beyond the crate README. The Security section is absent, so the author should either check off each item or delete the section as the template allows. Overall the description is mostly complete.
Resolution
Optionally add a note on the Security and Parity and reach sections of the template, or state that they do not apply and delete them. Also confirm the workspace-level checks (cargo xtask layers and assets) are not needed, since no assets or crate boundaries changed.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[#5255] Requirement: a glyph on the next line must not be removed when it lies outside the filled mark. Source check: in crates/redact/src/interp.rs, show now calls glyph_hit with em_box(descent, ascent). em_box divides the font box by its height when that height is above 1, so the box never exceeds one em. The page-box path is unchanged. Glyphs whose full font box reaches a mark but whose one-em box does not are kept and counted in Report::glyphs_beside_marks. Worked check: with the 0.9 / -0.25 fallback at 12 pt solid leading, the full box top sits about 1.2 pt into the mark, which exceeds the 1 pt threshold. The one-em box top sits about 0.2 pt below the mark bottom, so the glyph is kept. The Monaco 1000 / -250 case, named in #5255, is covered by the same rule. The issue offers a glyph-height-relative rule only as 'one option'. The one-em approach meets the expected outcome: only glyphs under the mark are removed. Unverified: I did not run the test suite. The three new tests and the reported counts (153 and 154 passing) are author-reported and were not rerun here.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
All changed code supports the fix for [#5255]. The em_box helper and its use in show change the mark-hit box. The beside counter and Report::glyphs_beside_marks field report glyphs kept under the new rule. The field is a public API addition, but it serves the stated trade-off: ink outside the one-em box stays in the file, so callers can review those glyphs. The README and the regression tests in crates/redact/src/tests.rs document and cover the new behaviour. No unrelated feature or file change appears in the reviewed diff of interp.rs and lib.rs. I did not inspect the README or test diffs in detail. The hidden-text path still uses the full box, as the diff shows.

Do not use the normalized box as the only redaction hit test. Apply and verification both use em_box, so ink in the raw metric strip can remain extractable while verification succeeds. This is reachable with ordinary font metrics and Type 3 metrics derived from FontBBox. Text selection creates marks from the same selection geometry, and the Redact tool also supports arbitrary dragged rectangles. Check actual glyph bounds or fail closed when the raw and normalized boxes differ.

A glyph whose full font box reaches a mark while its one-em box does not
is kept (the overlap is the space between lines); any ink it draws
outside one em stays in the file. Report::glyphs_beside_marks counts
them so a caller can surface them for a check instead of keeping them
silently. The README now says solid-set lines keep their glyphs when the
lines' one-em boxes don't overlap: mixed fonts can still overlap.
@coderabbitai Both findings checked against the code. Addressed in the new commit:
README (solid-line claim): right: lines in different fonts can still overlap within one em (your 800/−400 over 1000/−200 example gives 2 pt at 12 pt). The README now limits the claim to lines whose one-em boxes don't overlap and says mixed fonts can still overlap.
Ink outside the one-em box: also right that apply and the verification pass both test the one-em box, so a glyph whose full font box reaches a mark but whose one-em box doesn't is kept, and any ink it draws in that strip stays in the file. Those glyphs are no longer kept silently: Report::glyphs_beside_marks counts them, so a caller can surface them for a check. The three tests assert the count (4 for the line below a mark in both solid-set cases, 0 for the mark over part of large text, where the glyphs are removed). cargo test -p pdfcraft-redact 153 of 153; clippy -D warnings clean; engine and automation build.
Measuring each glyph's actual outline would close the strip case fully. pdfcraft-fonts already depends on skrifa and reads embedded FontFile2/FontFile3 programs, so the ink box can come from the glyph outline, with the one-em box only for fonts without a readable program (Type 1, missing fonts). That needs the code-to-glyph mapping per font type, so I'll open it as a follow-up rather than grow this fix.

⚠️Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Count every full-box overlap.
glyph_hit ignores overlaps of one point or less. For the 10-point font in the new test, a mark spanning y=119.5–120.5 overlaps the full box by 0.5 points but misses the one-em box. The glyph is retained and glyphs_beside_marks remains zero.
Use an intersection check for the full box so the report does not miss glyphs that need review.

@helenkwok I checked the updated code and documentation.
The README now limits the solid-line claim to non-overlapping one-em boxes and states the mixed-font limitation.
show counts a retained glyph when its full font box passes glyph_hit but its one-em box does not. show_text adds that count only during apply, so verification does not count it twice.
The three regression tests assert glyphs_beside_marks counts of 4, 4, and 0, as reported.
These changes address the documentation claim and make the retained-glyph case visible to callers. The count does not prove that the marked area contains no retained ink. Callers must check flagged results before treating redaction as complete.
Glyph-outline measurement can remain a separate follow-up with this limitation documented. Please link the follow-up issue here when you open it.
I inspected the source and test assertions. I did not rerun tests, clippy, or builds.

@helenkwok Thanks for linking #5298 for glyph-outline measurement. That work can remain separate from this PR, with the retained-ink limitation documented.
@croquete1 Thanks for the review. On em_box with ascent <= descent: Metrics can't produce that. It keeps the ascent at 0.3 em or more and the descent at −0.05 em or less (a font whose values fall outside gets 0.9 / −0.25), so the height is always positive. The else branch is the box of a font that already fits in one em (0.8 / −0.2 in the redact tests' font), returned unscaled. Happy to add a line saying so in the comment if a maintainer wants it.

ReviewerA — source-read COMMENT (not an approval)
I read the first hunk: the redaction interpreter's show now returns a third value, beside, counting glyphs measured against marks of at most one em of height, and the report gets glyphs_beside_marks. The title says glyphs are measured against marks with at most one em of height (so that a mark does not remove text lines it only touches). For redaction the safe error is removing too much, not too little; the same concern as in #5258. I did not read how beside is used. Please add tests for a mark exactly one em high and just above it, and make the report say how many glyphs were left beside marks so the user can review them.
I ran nothing and have no exact-head CI result for this PR, so this is not an approval. Where a diff was long I read its code hunks rather than every generated or documentation line.
Thanks for the read. The report already says how many glyphs were left beside marks: Report::glyphs_beside_marks, documented in the redact README under "text", so a caller can list them for review.
Added in bd429c5: a boundary test for a mark one em tall. Placed half a point above the line's em box it removes nothing and reports 4 glyphs beside the mark. Placed three points lower, past the fifth of the box a glyph needs covered, it removes those 4 glyphs and leaves the lines above and below whole. The existing test already covers a mark exactly on the em box.
Tests: 154 pass in pdfcraft-redact, fmt and clippy clean on the box. I have not run the full workspace.

rewritten text is `[(AB) -2000 (23)] TJ`, ensuring the expected glyphs are
removed rather than checking only that `ABOVE123` is absent.
After applying the fix, consider running `coderabbit review --agent` for local

Thanks for the read. Both asks are in: bd429c5 adds the boundary test for a mark one em tall, and the report already says how many glyphs were left beside marks.
The test: placed half a point above the line's em box, the mark removes nothing and the report counts 4 glyphs beside the mark. Placed three points lower, past the fifth of the box a glyph needs covered, it removes those 4 glyphs and leaves the lines above and below whole. The existing test already covers a mark exactly on the em box.
Report::glyphs_beside_marks is the count you asked for, documented in the redact README under "text", so a caller can list those glyphs for review.
154 tests pass in pdfcraft-redact, and fmt and clippy are clean. I have not run the full workspace.
None of these three redaction PRs has an exact-head CI result yet: the CI and SonarCloud runs on each head are held at action_required, which is GitHub waiting for a maintainer to approve workflow runs from a fork.
Could a maintainer approve the runs on these three heads? On my side, each branch is fmt and clippy clean with its crate tests passing in a Linux container (pdfcraft-redact 160 passed and pdfcraft-fonts 98 passed on the #5308 head), and I have not run the whole workspace.

What this changes
Fixes #5255.
Redacting text on one line could delete glyphs on the next line, outside the filled box, when the lines are set solid (line spacing = font size).
SECRET word hereunder a markedAccount: 12345678becameSECRET.A mark made from a text selection covers the selected line's em box: text selection measures each glyph from descent −0.2 to ascent 0.8 em (
crates/render/src/text/device.rs). The redactor measured the same glyphs from the font's own descent to ascent, which is taller than one em for many fonts (Monaco 1000 / −250, and the 0.9 / −0.25 fallback): up to 1.5 + 0.6 em after the clamp incrates/fonts/src/pdf.rs. With 12 pt lines, the line below's glyph box then reached about 2 pt into the mark, pastglyph_hit's 1 pt threshold, and those glyphs were removed while the fill only covered the mark.shownow measures a glyph against marks with its descent-to-ascent box scaled to at most one em (em_box). How you verified it
