M3: a file named with open parameters opens at their destination (#3425) - #5049
Help systems start a PDF reader with open parameters after the file name, such as manual.pdf#nameddest=Intro or manual.pdf#page=12. PdfCraft read the whole string as the file name and failed with "os error 2" (#3425). A path that names no file, but whose part before a # does, now opens that file at the named destination or page:
at launch,
when another launch hands the file to the running app, at the place asked for last if it's asked twice before it has opened,
and in its tab when the file is already open.
page (1-based) and nameddest are read, plus a bare #Intro as a destination name, as browsers' PDF viewers do. Other parameters (zoom, view, pagemode, search…) are ignored, and the file still opens. A path that names a file is never split, so a # in a real file or folder name still works.
The named destination is looked up in the target's /Names /Dests tree or catalog /Dests (ISO 32000-2 §12.3.2.4). In the running app the lookup runs off the UI thread, because a large manual's name tree takes a noticeable moment to read. The same lookup now applies a GoToR link's named destination, in the app and in link_open, instead of opening the file at its default view with a warning.
Headlessly, doc_open reads the same open parameters, through the parser in pdfcraft_engine::open_parameters that the app uses. It reports the destination the way link_open does.
cargo test -p pdfcraft-render -j 2: 401 unit and 43 integration tests pass (1 already ignored)

They're the same 38 tests that failed before this PR's changes, and I ran one of them on main at e9fc890a, where it fails the same way. So it's the fonts installed here, not this change.

Tests:
open_action::a_file_named_with_open_parameters_opens_at_their_destination and open_action::open_parameters_handed_to_the_running_app_show_their_destination cover launch, hand-off, two requests before the file has opened, an already-open tab, a lookup that finishes after the call returns, and a page asked for while a name is still being looked up.
document_links::a_gotor_link_to_a_named_destination_opens_at_its_page covers the GoToR link in the app.
automation::doc_open_reads_open_parameters_after_the_file_name covers #page=, #nameddest=, a bare name, a name the file doesn't define, a page past the end, a real file named odd#page=2.pdf, a missing file and a path outside --root.
automation::local_gotor_link_open_applies_destinations_and_honors_root now also follows a link to a target that defines the name.
inspect::navigation::open_dest_tests::a_named_destination_is_looked_up_by_its_name covers both name trees, UTF-16 and PDFDocEncoding keys, a missing name, a page past the end, a self-referencing name and bytes that aren't a PDF.
Each fix was switched off on its own, and its test failed:
Without the split in open_path_then or the lookup in apply_destination_at, the open reports Failed instead of Opened, and the GoToR link lands on page 0 instead of 2.
Without replacing a pending open's destination, the hand-off times out waiting for Load Flow.
With the lookup made synchronous, the tab has already moved when the call returns.
Without dropping a lookup in flight, the tab ends on page 2 instead of the page 5 asked for after it.
Without the split in doc_open, manual.pdf#page=3 fails to open.
Without the lookup in destination_report, link_open reports destination_applied: false for a name the target defines.
Never-crash
No new unwrap/expect/panic!/unreachable!/todo! outside tests
No indexing or slicing with input-derived positions: the path is split with get at a #, which is one byte. The page number uses checked_sub, and at most 32 # of one path are tried.
No unsafe
named_destination reads the document like inspect: lazy reader first, lopdf when that fails, both under catch_unwind. If its thread can't start, the app looks the name up in place. If the thread stops without an answer, the app shows the "not applied" warning.
Provenance
No assets, fonts or copied code
Behaviour comes from ISO 32000-2 §12.3.2.4 and Adobe's public "Parameters for Opening PDF Files" document
Security
--root confinement holds: doc_open resolves the part before a # with the same resolve as any path, and the test opens nothing outside --root. No change to MCP or the control channel, and no network access.
Parity and reach
parity/acrobat-features.toml: core.open and the link entry name the new tests, and their notes say which parameters are still ignored and that doc_open and link_open report the destination.
Reachable headlessly: doc_open for open parameters, link_open for GoToR named destinations, both with end-to-end tests.
crates/engine/README.md lists open_parameters.
Anything a reviewer should look at first
This was written before main split inspect.rs and ui-egui/src/lib.rs into modules, and I re-applied it by hand rather than rebasing: named_destination is in inspect/navigation.rs, the open path in app/files.rs, the destination code in app/links.rs, and the parser in crates/engine/src/open_parameters.rs.
The off-thread lookup (PendingDestination, poll_pending_destinations) follows the word count's pattern: a named thread, a channel, and a repaint request. A newer destination for the same document drops a lookup still in flight.
The split only happens when the whole path is not a file, so a file literally named manual.pdf#page=2 still opens as itself.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
PDFs opened with page or named-destination parameters now navigate to the requested destination at launch, when handed off to a running app, or when already open. Unsupported parameters are ignored.
Remote PDF links can navigate to named destinations defined in the target document.
Opening a PDF with destination parameters reports whether the destination was applied and includes any related warning.
Bug Fixes
Missing named destinations leave the document at its default view and display a warning. Out-of-range page destinations are not applied and are reported with a warning.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The app and automation tools now parse PDF open parameters and apply page or named destinations. Named destinations are resolved from target PDFs for file opens and remote GoTo links. Tests cover launch, existing tabs, automation results, and unresolved destinations.
A public resolver checks the PDF name tree and catalog dictionary, including decoded text keys. It returns valid page destinations. Tests cover missing and invalid destinations.

The parser separates a file path from supported page and named-destination parameters. The app carries destinations through new opens and requests for open tabs. doc_open reports whether an extracted destination was applied and any warning.
The app and link_open resolve named GoToR destinations. The app can perform lookups asynchronously and applies results to the target tab. Tests check resolved and missing names.
storytold/pdfcraft#1114 — This change adds named-destination handling to GoToR links, a behavior mentioned in the issue’s implementation status.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 48b9b
Some edge cases can open the wrong file or location. The change is mergeable with these limitations understood.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 48b9b
File-access restrictions remain in place, and destination results are applied to the intended document. However, repeated navigation requests can leave obsolete PDF lookups running concurrently, creating a local resource-exhaustion risk. No broader file access or privilege expansion was established.
Retained concerns
Low · reliability · inferred: Newest-request ordering discards obsolete lookup results but does not stop obsolete work. Every live named-destination request can spawn another detached PDF-parsing thread, including requests for an already-open file. Repeated requests against a large PDF can therefore accumulate CPU, memory, and thread usage; if thread creation fails, lookup falls back to the UI thread. Unlike the base's focus-only behavior for an already-open file, this introduces additional work without an aggregate concurrency bound. The supported exposure is local application availability, not broader authority.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The identified resource-amplification path affects the desktop reader process handling repeated named-navigation requests. It requires requests to reach that application and a readable target PDF. The inspected path establishes no additional tenant, service, credential, or filesystem authority.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — Repeated destination-bearing opens of an already-open, expensive-to-parse PDF can initiate overlapping lookups despite latest-request-wins navigation. Obsolete threads continue parsing after their receivers are dropped. Resource exhaustion or UI stalls are plausible consequences, but were not demonstrated by execution.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Automation doc_open uses the root-constrained resolver both when recognizing a fragment-bearing file prefix and before reading the selected file. GoToR opening retains source-relative path resolution and root enforcement before reading; named-destination reporting operates on the authorized target's already-open bytes. Static test assertions cover traversal and symlink rejection.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Late results cannot navigate a closed document because consumption requires a matching document view. A test also asserts that a newer page request wins over an in-flight named lookup. These are useful state-integrity controls, although they do not bound outstanding work.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Use bounded lookup execution with per-document coalescing or cooperative cancellation, retaining only the newest queued destination. Avoid synchronous parsing on the UI thread when background capacity is exhausted.

Explanation
Issue #3425 requires a path such as manual.pdf#nameddest=Intro to open the PDF at its requested location. The PR adds shared parameter parsing and splits the path only when the full path is not a file. The app applies named destinations at launch, during running-app handoff, and in an open tab. The automation path uses the same parser. The reported tests cover named destinations, page destinations, handoff behavior, and literal # file names.

Retain the latest destination while the file is opening.
If a second launch requests manual.pdf#page=2 while manual.pdf#page=1 is pending, this branch returns Pending and discards the second after_open. The tab opens at page 1, not the last requested page. Update the matching pending open’s destination before returning, and cover two requests received before completion. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Decode both named-destination forms before lookup.
#Load%20Flow and #nameddest=Load%20Flow currently pass Load%20Flow to RemoteDestination::Named, so lookup can miss the destination named Load Flow. Decode each name after splitting parameters. This preserves parameter delimiters and leaves unencoded names unchanged.

Minor · Coalesce requests for the active password prompt. · files.rs:536-560
When a same-file request arrives while password_prompt is active, open_path_then checks only pending_opens and schedules another OpenRequest. The active prompt's original request has already left pending_opens. After the prompt is submitted or cancelled, polling can admit the deferred request and finish_pending_open can create a second password prompt instead of updating the active prompt's destination.
Add an active-prompt coalescing branch before the pending_opens check. Update after_open only when the new request provides a destination. Preserve every applicable continuation. Do not overwrite an existing continuation with None or discard a second non-None continuation. A direct prompt.then = then assignment is not safe because PasswordPrompt stores only one continuation and both requests can supply one.

The parser can select the wrong file when both guide and guide#manual.pdf exist. The current find_map scans # from left to right, so guide#manual.pdf#page=2 selects guide at the first # and treats manual.pdf#page=2 as the fragment. This prevents the intended PDF from opening.

Update split’s candidate selection so it prefers the longest existing file
prefix, allowing guide#manual.pdf to be selected over guide for
guide#manual.pdf#page=2. Preserve the direct-file check and destination parsing
for the selected file.

ReviewerA — source-read COMMENT (not an approval)
I read the diff: a file named with open parameters opens at their destination (M3, #3425), as a help system starts a PDF reader (manual.pdf#nameddest=Intro, #page=12). In the automation doc_open the path is split with open_parameters::split(requested, |p| self.resolve(p, false).is_ok_and(|p| p.is_file())), which never splits a path that names an existing file (so a file literally called a#b.pdf still opens), the file part is then resolved under --root as before, and the reply gets destination_applied, destination and warning from links::destination_report, which looks a named destination up in the document as the app does. Resolving the file part through the same root check as any other path means the # handling cannot be used to escape the root; the closure that tests is_file calls resolve, which checks the root and returns an error (treated as "not a file") and therefore splits, which is fine. The new reply fields appear only when parameters were given, so existing clients see no change. Tests wanted: a#b.pdf that exists (no split), x.pdf#page=0 and #page=99999 (a warning, not a failure), #nameddest= of a missing name, and a path with .. before the #. I read about 30 lines. I have not run it, and no exact-head CI result exists for this head, so this is a source-read comment and not an approval. Nothing was run.
I ran nothing and have no exact-head CI result for this PR, so this is not an approval. Where a diff was long I read its code hunks rather than every generated or documentation line.

What this changes
Help systems start a PDF reader with open parameters after the file name, such as
manual.pdf#nameddest=Introormanual.pdf#page=12. PdfCraft read the whole string as the file name and failed with "os error 2" (#3425). A path that names no file, but whose part before a#does, now opens that file at the named destination or page:page(1-based) andnameddestare read, plus a bare#Introas a destination name, as browsers' PDF viewers do. Other parameters (zoom, view, pagemode, search…) are ignored, and the file still opens. A path that names a file is never split, so a#in a real file or folder name still works. The named destination is looked up in the target's
/Names /Deststree or catalog/Dests(ISO 32000-2 §12.3.2.4). In the running app the lookup runs off the UI thread, because a large manual's name tree takes a noticeable moment to read. The same lookup now applies a GoToR link's named destination, in the app and inlink_open, instead of opening the file at its default view with a warning.Headlessly,
doc_openreads the same open parameters, through the parser inpdfcraft_engine::open_parametersthat the app uses. It reports the destination the waylink_opendoes.Fixes #3425
