feat(ui): add Cut, Copy, Paste, and Select All context menu to comment boxes (#4771) - #4865
Right-clicking any of the comment input boxes ("Search comments", "Add a comment", inline comment editor, and "Add a reply" in the Comments panel, as well as the floating "Add a comment" / "Type text" composer on the page) previously showed no context menu, preventing users from pasting, cutting, copying, or selecting all text with the mouse.
Adds widgets::text_edit_context_menu(resp, text, clipboard) in crates/ui-egui/src/widgets.rs providing Cut, Copy, Paste, and Select All actions backed by egui::text_edit::TextEditState cursor ranges and an in-process clipboard fallback (CommentView::clipboard) alongside the system clipboard (arboard / ui.ctx().copy_text(...)).
Uses char_indices() and str::get(...) with saturating arithmetic (AGENTS.md §4) to map character cursor offsets to UTF-8 byte offsets without direct slicing or panics.
Attaches text_edit_context_menu to "Search comments", "Add a comment", inline comment editing, "Add a reply" (crates/ui-egui/src/comments_panel.rs), and "composer-text" (crates/ui-egui/src/comments.rs).
Adds the comments::comment_boxes_offer_cut_copy_paste_and_select_all_context_menu headless integration test in crates/ui-egui/tests/it/comments.rs and unit test widgets::tests::char_to_byte_respects_multibyte_boundaries_and_clamps_out_of_bounds.
cargo test -p pdfcraft-ui-egui --test it comments::comment_boxes_offer — 1 passed
cargo test -p pdfcraft-ui-egui --lib widgets::tests::char_to_byte — 1 passed
cargo xtask layers and cargo xtask assets — ok
cargo fmt --check
clippy with -D warnings on the crates I changed

cargo xtask layers and cargo xtask assets (if you touched crate boundaries or any asset)
Tests. New behaviour needs a test at the right scale — a property test, a unit test, a
crate integration test or an end-to-end one. For a bug fix, please check that the test
fails before your fix by reverting the fix and watching it go red. A test nobody has seen
fail is not evidence that it pins anything.
Never-crash
Every PDF, script, MCP call, settings file and keystroke is untrusted input (AGENTS.md §4).
No new unwrap/expect/panic!/unreachable!/todo! outside tests, unless it is
provably infallible with a comment saying why
No indexing or slicing with input-derived positions (get, and strings only at char
boundaries); checked or saturating arithmetic; allocations sized by input are capped;
recursion is bounded
No unsafe
Any crash this fixes has a small synthetic regression test
Provenance
This is the part that cannot be undone after a merge, and the part a new contributor is
least likely to know about. Please read AGENTS.md §1 before adding any asset.
No asset from an Adobe product, and no Adobe icon recreated, traced or imitated
No GPL/AGPL code copied in — MuPDF, Ghostscript, Poppler, veraPDF and DSS may only be
run as external oracle processes
Behaviour comes from the specification or black-box observation, not from reading
another implementation's source
Every new asset has an ATTRIBUTION.toml entry and cargo xtask assets passes
Security
--root confinement still holds on every path, including ones reached by nested
tool dispatch
MCP and the UI control channel stay opt-in, loopback-only and token-authenticated
No new outbound network access (that decision is the owner's)
Anything a reviewer should look at first
text_edit_context_menu uses CommentView::clipboard when non-empty so headless egui_kittest tests remain deterministic and isolated from the host OS clipboard, falling back to arboard::Clipboard when pasting external text on desktop.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added Cut, Copy, Paste, and Select All context-menu actions to comment, reply, edit, composer, and search text fields.
Clipboard actions use the system clipboard when available and an in-app fallback otherwise. Pasting into single-line fields converts line breaks to spaces; multiline fields preserve them.
System clipboard reads can be disabled for a context.
Bug Fixes
Escape cancels comment editing or a draft only when no popup is open.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Comment text fields now have Cut, Copy, Paste, and Select All context-menu actions. Clipboard handling uses system clipboard text when available and an in-process fallback. The menus are wired into comment panel fields and the floating composer.

Summary
Clipboard state and shared text-edit menu crates/ui-egui/src/tools/comments/state.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/widgets.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs
CommentView stores an in-process clipboard. The shared menu implements Cut, Copy, Paste, and Select All, supports disabling system clipboard reads, and converts character offsets to UTF-8 byte offsets.
Comment field integration crates/ui-egui/src/tools/comments/composer.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/panels/comments_panel.rs, crates/ui-egui/tests/it/comments.rs
The shared menu is attached to comment search, new-comment, edit-comment, reply, and floating composer fields. Escape cancels only when no popup was already open. Integration tests cover text actions across these fields.

Possibly related issues
storytold/pdfcraft#4771: The change adds Paste and other text-edit actions to comment-box context menus, matching the issue’s requested behavior.
Suggested reviewers:aiongg, alehel
Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 51745
Selection-based editing can affect the wrong text, and web Paste cannot use external clipboard text. These issues should be addressed before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 38311
The clipboard actions remain user-invoked and operate on editable text. Document changes still use the existing submission flow, and the fallback clipboard belongs to each document. No concrete security issue was identified; host clipboard behavior remains platform-dependent.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The new data exchange spans the document's comment fields and the user's host clipboard. Other applications can influence incoming host clipboard text or receive copied text, but the inspected menu requires an explicit action and places incoming content into editable text rather than directly invoking a privileged operation.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The menu changes draft text and cursor state; it does not itself apply an engine edit. Composer submission still requires Post or a matching key event from the focused editor. Selection offsets are clamped and converted at UTF-8 character boundaries before text replacement.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Clipboard initialization and read failures produce an empty result and use the document fallback. Cut and Copy retain an in-process copy before requesting host output, limiting dependence on successful host delivery. An empty host clipboard is treated the same as a failed read, so the fallback may contain older copied text.

- Line 1647: Capture whether an egui popup is open before each call to
text_edit_context_menu, then use that snapshot in both Escape-key cancellation
checks so Escape cancels editing only when no popup was open before the menu was
rendered. Preserve the existing Cancel-button behavior.
Review comments at @crates/ui-egui/src/widgets.rs:
- Line 156: Update the Paste logic in text_edit_context_menu to read
system_clipboard_text() first and use the per-view clipboard value only when the
system text is empty. Keep the integration test isolated with an explicit
text-clipboard override or test backend; do not use
PdfCraftApp::system_clipboard, which is for image clipboard operations.
- Line 157: Update text_edit_context_menu to accept a single_line flag and
replace pasted line breaks with spaces when it is true, while preserving newline
normalization when false. Pass true for comment search and add-comment fields
using widgets::line, and false for the multiline editor, reply, and floating
composer.

Web build: one Ctrl/Cmd+V pastes twice when the clipboard holds text#2638
## Description
vangel76
opened on Oct 10, 2026
Issue body actions
Found by reading the code (eframe 0.36.2 web input + `crates/ui-egui/src/shortcuts.rs`), not yet reproduced in a browser.
### Steps
1. Web build: open a document, make a selection, Edit > Copy (Ctrl/Cmd+C).
2. Have some text on the OS clipboard as well (any text copied in another app / browser tab), or just copy as above in a browser that puts text there.
3. With the canvas focused, press Ctrl/Cmd+V.
### Expected
One pasted layer, like on desktop.
### Actual (from the code)
Two pasted layers. eframe's web runner forwards the `keydown` as `Event::Key { key: V, pressed: true, modifiers: command }` (it deliberately doesn't prevent default for Ctrl/Cmd+C/V/X), and the browser then fires its `paste` event, which eframe turns into `Event::Paste(text)` when the clipboard holds text. Both land in the same frame. `shortcuts::clipboard_keys` passes the key press through and also turns the `Paste` event into a second ⌘V press, so `edit.paste` runs twice.
The same applies to Ctrl/Cmd+X (key press + `cut` event: the second Cut runs on the now empty selection) and Ctrl/Cmd+C.
Desktop is unaffected: egui-winit drops the key press when it emits `Copy`/`Cut`/`Paste`.

Normalize pasted line breaks for single-line comment fields.
text_edit_context_menu inserts normalized \n characters into every field. The comment search and add-comment fields use widgets::line, so multiline clipboard text can produce embedded newlines there. The locked egui fork replaces line breaks with spaces for single-line paste. Preserve newlines for the multiline editor, reply, and floating composer.
Add a single_line: bool parameter. Pass true for the comment search and add-comment callers, and false for the other callers.

Preserve the selection on secondary click.
Pinned egui replaces the selection with a caret when the text editor receives a right-click. The menu then loads that caret and treats the selection as empty. Copy therefore copies the entire field, and Cut removes the entire field.
Update the pinned egui fork so pointer selection starts only for primary presses:

Hi everyone,
Thank you to @YusufMntm for working on this feature! Having a context menu for comment boxes will be incredibly helpful.
I noticed that the PR currently has some merge conflicts and is awaiting workflow approval from a maintainer to run the tests. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help test this locally, and I look forward to seeing it in a future release!

Hi @hammad-ali19,
Thank you for the kind words and the heads up! I am resolving the merge conflicts with main right now and looking into the selection handling feedback. I really appreciate your offer to help test — once the branch is updated, local testing and feedback would be wonderful!
Route the menu Paste action through egui’s paste-event path.
On the web, system_clipboard_text always returns an empty string. The custom Paste handler calls it directly, so selecting Paste can insert only the in-process fallback. It cannot paste text copied from another application or browser tab. Use the existing egui paste-request/event path for this action.

Do not clear the draft when the caret is collapsed.
A collapsed cursor range is filtered to None, so Cut runs std::mem::take(text) and clears the entire draft. Preserve the raw cursor range for Cut. The existing !copied.is_empty() guard then skips both clipboard updates, leaving the draft and clipboard unchanged, matching egui's no-op Cut.

Review comment at @crates/ui-egui/src/widgets.rs around lines 138 - 140:
In the Cut handling around `selection`, preserve the raw cursor range separately
from the non-empty selection; use the raw range to choose the text to cut so a
collapsed range does not fall through to `std::mem::take(text)`. Keep the
existing non-empty `copied` guard so a collapsed Cut leaves both the draft and
clipboard unchanged.
The comment-box context-menu test does not cover Paste at a nonterminal caret or over a selected range.
Every Paste in comment_boxes_offer_cut_copy_paste_and_select_all_context_menu targets an empty field. In that state, insertion at the caret, appending, and replacing the whole field produce the same text. The test also asserts no caret position and no next typed character. A regression that always appends or replaces the whole field on Paste would pass this test. The char_to_byte unit test does not exercise the Paste insertion path.
Suggested test addition
Add a case that pastes into a non-empty field with a collapsed caret in the middle, and a case that pastes over a selected range. Assert the resulting text, and the caret state or the next typed character.

@hammad-ali19 The branch has been rebased cleanly onto latest main. All 86 comment integration tests (cargo test -p pdfcraft-ui-egui --test it comments::), cargo fmt --check -p pdfcraft-ui-egui, and cargo clippy -p pdfcraft-ui-egui -- -D warnings pass cleanly without conflicts. Feel free to test locally!
Thread-safe system clipboard access: In crates/ui-egui/src/widgets.rs, routed system_clipboard_text through crate::os_clipboard::with(|cb| cb.get_text()) rather than directly creating rboard::Clipboard, ensuring process-wide mutex locking across desktop OS clipboard interactions to guard against heap corruption under concurrent test runs.
Range selection handling: Preserved
aw_range to correctly differentiate uninitialized selection states from active range selections.
All comment integration tests (cargo test -p pdfcraft-ui-egui --test it comment_boxes_offer_cut_copy_paste_and_select_all_context_menu), formatting, and clippy pass cleanly.
