M12: XFA fields validate before they exit, and a list box validates and exits as the focus leaves it - #4692
Builds on #4573: its commits (and those of #4359, #4563 and #4369, which it builds on) are included here until it merges. This PR's own change is the last commit.
What this changes
XFA fields now run their validate scripts before their exit scripts, each kind of field at the moment another viewer runs them. A list box now keeps the focus as items are picked in it, as a check box does. #4573 listed list and combo boxes as not covered.
Measured in another viewer on two synthetic forms, each field logging its enter, change, validate, exit and click scripts:
Text field: typing runs change; leaving runs validate, then exit.
Check box: a click runs validate, then change and click; exit waits for the focus to leave.
Drop-down: picking an item runs change, validate and exit at once. The drop-down gives up the focus as the item is picked, so clicking away afterwards runs nothing more for it.
List box: picking an item runs change and click. The list keeps the focus; validate and exit run as the focus leaves it.
Before this change, PdfCraft ran exit before validate for every field. A check box validated after its change scripts, and a list box validated and exited with every pick.
Changes:
crates/engine/src/xfa.rs, on_changes:
A check box or radio button runs its validate scripts first, before TOGGLE_ORDER.
Any other field runs them after its change scripts and before its exit scripts.
A list box with the focus keeps it, like a check box: its exit waits, and its SOM path goes into FocusLeft::unvalidated.
FocusLeft holds what is left for the focus to finish (the exits that ran, the list boxes still to validate), so on_changes keeps seven arguments.
Runner::validate: one validate script, with the existing alert rule (a failing value shows its message, an empty one doesn't). It is shared by on_changes and on_focus.
crates/engine/src/lib.rs, js.rs:
The document keeps the list boxes picked in while focused (xfa_unvalidated).
field_focus runs such a list box's validate scripts as it loses the focus, before its exit (Edit::XfaEvent with validate, through on_focus).
Gaining focus, undo, redo and revert forget them.
crates/xfa/src/script.rs: has_focus_scripts counts a list box with a validate script, so a form whose only focus-driven script is one still tracks the focus.
Runner::validate is identical to the one in #4691 (validate on open), so the two merge cleanly.

validate_runs_before_exit_and_a_list_box_validates_as_the_focus_leaves drives a text field, a check box, a drop-down and a list box through focus, value and focus loss. The log is the other viewer's order. A list box entered and left without a pick doesn't validate. A list box whose value fails says so as the focus leaves, not as the item is picked.

Anything a reviewer should look at first
A check box validates before its change scripts. That is what the other viewer did, though it reads oddly. Radio buttons follow check boxes here, without a separate measurement.
A list box validates as the focus leaves only after a pick. One entered and left untouched doesn't validate.

New Features
XFA forms now run field enter and exit scripts as focus changes, including movement between radio buttons. Validation and script execution follow field focus and value changes.
Checkbox and radio-button changes now run their associated click scripts.
Added a form_focus automation tool to trigger a field’s enter or exit behavior and report form changes, alerts, output, requests, and errors.
Bug Fixes
Form editors now reflect script-driven field changes when the user has not modified the corresponding draft.
Unchanged focus events no longer create unnecessary edits or undo history.
…ocus
A field's exit scripts run each time it loses focus, changed or not, and
its enter scripts each time it gains it (Session::field_focus, the app's
per-frame focus check, and the form_focus tool). Scripts that change
nothing leave no edit; an exit its value change already ran is not run
again; a radio button runs its own scripts.
…ters or leaves the group
A radio button's focus change now also enters or leaves its exclusion group: the group's enter runs before the button's, its exit after the button's, and a move between two buttons of one group runs only theirs. Order measured black-box on a synthetic form. Session::field_focus_crossing takes the crossing flag; the app passes false between widgets of one radio field, and form_focus takes within_group.
widget_som fell back to the field's own SOM path for an index out of range, so for a radio field it ran the group's scripts. It now returns None unless the field has that widget.
Save, Print, Export, Sign and the other commands commit the form first. A focus move made in the same frame (or the editor they close) ran its enter and exit scripts only afterwards, so the document they read lacked what those scripts change. commit_form_typing now runs them before it returns. Also words the comment on noted exits so a failed exit reads as run.
A check box or radio group keeps the focus as it is clicked, and another viewer runs its exit scripts once, when the focus leaves (probes Q48 and Q49 on synthetic forms). The engine now records which XFA object has the focus; a check box or radio group set while it has the focus runs no exit with the change, and field_focus runs it on the focus loss. Text fields, which commit as they lose the focus, and values set without the focus on the field keep running exit with the change. In the app, a click that both moves the focus and sets the check box or radio button runs the focus scripts first, so the order is exit, enter, change, click, as measured.
…nd what ran shows
Entering or leaving a radio group runs the group's scripts and its button's as edits of their own. When the group's ran away and turned the form's scripts off, the button's then failed with an error, and what the group's script showed waited for a later event. The rest now stop once the scripts are off, and the app shows what ran and refreshes the view whether or not a later script failed.
A check box or radio group set while it has the focus keeps its exit for the focus loss. After Revert nothing is being edited, so a value set then runs its exit with the change again.
The exit scripts of the field with the focus when its tab closes, list and combo boxes (which still run exit with each change), and AcroForm Mouse Down, Mouse Enter, Mouse Exit, On Focus and On Blur actions, which don't run.
Entering or leaving a field built the live form tree for the radio group lookup and again for each object's script check. focus_targets reads the group and which objects have the script from one build.

Walkthrough
The change adds XFA focus-event handling in engine sessions, UI form editing, and automation. It processes focus, validation, change, and click scripts, tracks deferred validation and exit events, and adds tests for script order, radio-group movement, editor updates, and automation results.
Adds focus-script detection and focus-target resolution. XFA processing handles validation, change, click, and focus events. Fixtures and tests cover event order and radio-group behavior.
Engine focus state and edit lifecycle crates/engine/src/js.rs, crates/engine/src/document.rs, crates/engine/src/open.rs, crates/engine/src/edit/run.rs, crates/engine/src/session/*
Adds session focus methods and document state for focus, completed exits, and deferred validation. Edit handling routes focus events, avoids committing unchanged events, rejects batches containing XFA events, and updates tracking during edits, undo, redo, and revert.
UI focus movement and editor updates crates/ui-egui/src/editing.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/editing/close.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/tools/forms_ui.rs, crates/ui-egui/tests/it/xfa.rs
Tracks the focused field and widget. The UI runs focus scripts during form edits and focus changes, refreshes eligible drafts after script changes, and clears focus state on revert. Tests cover focus transitions and editor values.

Merge Risk: Minimal · previous review ef3a4
No actionable merge-blocking issue remains; the change is ready to merge after normal checks.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to ef3a4
Focus changes can now run document-provided scripts automatically and through automation. The inspected paths retain script-disable controls, field targeting checks, and execution limits. No new security vulnerability was established, but recovery after a failed focus event remains incompletely characterized.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The inspected new reachability is document-local: focus events run scripts selected from the open form and can affect its values, data, layout, presence, access, and viewer output. The reviewed paths do not establish new tenant, infrastructure, credential, or cross-service authority.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Focus execution returns immediately when scripts are disabled. Session editing does not install an XFA execution context in that state, and raw XFA events require that context. Automation validates field and widget inputs, while the engine derives event targets from the live form.
observed — The focus path uses the existing script runner and its execution budgets. Effect handling rejects print, save, link-opening, and focus-moving requests outside click scripts; adding enter, exit, and validation execution does not give those events click-only privileges.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Successful event completion propagates runaway status to a handler that disables further XFA scripts, including for no-op events. Ordinary script errors are recorded and retain prior script effects. Propagated write or rendering failures follow a different error path, so their interaction with lifecycle recovery should not be inferred from successful-path containment.

Restore focus bookkeeping when a focus event fails.
field_focus_crossing consumes xfa_unvalidated and xfa_exited before it calls self.apply(...). Edit::XfaEvent can fail the document's fill_forms permission check. A failed validation can therefore remove the pending-validation marker, and a failed exit can remove the marker that prevents a duplicate exit. A later focus event can skip validation or run an exit script again.
Snapshot the bookkeeping before the transition. Restore the last successful snapshot when an apply call fails. Keep the snapshot after each successful event so an earlier successful focus script remains committed if a later one fails. An unchanged XfaEvent remains intentional: its successful apply commits the bookkeeping even when it creates no document edit.

Restore the pending focus transition when a focus script call fails.
run_focus_scripts assigns view.forms.focused to now before calling field_focus_crossing. When that call returns an error, the code only reports it. The next call then sees equal focus and skips the exit or enter scripts. Restore the previous focus value on error so the transition remains pending.

@coderabbitai On the two outside-diff comments in your review of c419cbb: I'm not changing either.
js.rs 308-337, restoring the focus bookkeeping when an event fails. The bookkeeping records the focus move, and the move happened whatever its scripts did. The UI has already moved the focus and doesn't run the move again.
xfa_focus is where the focus is now.
A field's records in xfa_exited and xfa_unvalidated are used up because the field was left.
Restoring them after a failed script would describe a move the user didn't make. After a failed enter on a check box, for example, on_changes would treat the box as not having the focus and run its exit with the next change, not when the focus leaves. The likely failure is a form that may not be filled in, and there the changes those records serve fail too.
editing.rs 514-552, restoring view.forms.focused on error. With focused restored, the next frame sees the same move still pending and runs it again:
A script that keeps failing (in a form that may not be filled in) would run, and raise an error notice, on every frame.
A move that failed after another object's scripts succeeded (a group's enter, then its button's) would run the group's scripts again each frame.
As it is, the error shows once and the focus stays where the user put it.
