M9: comment.list reports the names each message mentions (#1415) - #1534
An agent tagged in a comment ("@claude, make this bigger") no longer has to search the message text for its own name. comment.list gives every message, the first one and each reply, a mentions list with {name, known, you} for each name the message mentions. The MCP run_command tool and the figcraft://comments resource return the same objects.
name: the name, spelt as the file spells it when the file knows it.
known: the file's people (or you) have that name; false for a name nobody in the file has.
you: the name is you, or the author the list was asked for.
a@b.com mentions nobody.
How
figcraft_doc::mentions(text, people) is the rule the thread view already used to highlight mentions, now returning each mention's range and the person it names. Mentions of unknown names are kept as the letters and digits after the @. mention_ranges, which the highlighting calls, is now a filter over it, so highlighting and the list can't disagree.
comment.list and comment.open resolve names against the file's people plus the user, the same names the thread view highlights. The people list is built once per list, not once per thread. A name mentioned twice is listed once.
No new parameters.
Tests
crates/engine/src/comment_mentions_tests.rs:
A reply mentions one person the file knows in two different spellings (listed once, as the file spells it), plus you and an unknown @Bob, and contains a@b.com. Only those three names come back, with the right known and you.
With author set, that person's mention is the one marked "you".
The rule itself: the longest name wins, matching ignores case, x@Sam and a@b.com are not mentions, and mention_ranges gives the same ranges as before.
cargo xtask ci: passes.
Parity notes
The thread view already highlights mentions this way. Only reading them as data is new, for the CLI, MCP and scripts. Numbers unchanged. The other two requests in the issue are left for their own tickets, as the triage asked: filtering threads by a mentioned name, and listing mentioned-only names in comment.people.
Not verified
No UI change, so no screenshot. The highlighting goes through the same function as before, and its existing tests pass.
An unknown name with a space in it (@Ada Lovelace when no Ada is in the file) is reported as its first word, Ada.
Comment messages and replies now include mentioned names, with indicators showing whether each name is known and refers to you. Unknown names are included, while email addresses such as a@b.com are not treated as mentions.
Mentions are recognized at the start of text or after a non-alphanumeric character, and are reported for each message in comment lists.
Documentation
Updated comment, collaboration, and roadmap documentation to describe mention details, name resolution, and parsing behavior.
Every message (the first and each reply) gets `mentions`: {name, known,
you} for each @mention, by the rule the thread view highlights with
(figcraft_doc::mentions, now shared with mention_ranges). Names resolve
against the file's people and you; unknown names are kept with
known: false; a@b.com mentions nobody.

Walkthrough
Comment parsing now returns mention ranges with matched names or unmatched mention tokens. comment.open and comment.list include deduplicated mention entries with name, known, and you fields for each message and reply.
The public mentions function returns byte ranges with a matched person name or no matched name. Tests cover overlapping names, case differences, punctuation, unknown names, empty mentions, and email-like text.
comment.open and comment.list pass document participants and the acting user to comment serialization. Tests, prompts, and documentation describe mention fields, name resolution, and parsing rules.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 7e458
The new mention metadata has narrow correctness inconsistencies for duplicate unknown names and case-variant participant names; these should be corrected before relying on the response contract.
Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to 7e458
The change adds descriptive mention metadata to existing comment responses. The inspected paths do not grant permissions, execute mentioned instructions, or expand access to other documents. The “you” flag identifies a matching display name, not an authenticated person.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The inspected exposure is metadata about mentions in returned comments, resolved against people throughout the currently loaded document and the acting name. It does not query a cross-document identity directory or introduce a separate MCP access path.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Comment text and names become descriptive JSON values, not executable commands or permission inputs in the inspected paths. Existing name-based message-ownership checks predate this change and remain separate from mention metadata. The MCP workflow already instructed consumers to act on comments; this PR adds field documentation rather than a new execution trigger.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names the main change: comment.list now reports the names each message mentions. The changeset matches this. It adds a mentions list with {name, known, you} to each message from comment.list, including replies, backed by a new figcraft_doc::mentions function. The title also carries the PR number #1415, which is harmless but adds noise. The PR objectives cite #1534 under the same title text, so the number in the title does not match the objectives and should be checked.

Explanation
Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Comment @coderabbitai help to get the list of available commands.
Add a comment.open assertion for mention metadata.
comment.open returns the same thread JSON as comment.list, so its mention data is produced by shared code. No test asserts that output. The new mention test calls only comment.list. The existing comment.open test checks id, unread, the page, and the view, but not mentions. A regression in the open response would pass the current suite.

Deduplicate unknown names without regard to ASCII case.
If the file knows neither spelling, @Bob @bob produces two known: false entries. named.contains(&v) compares their original spellings, although mention matching ignores ASCII case. Deduplicate by an ASCII-case-normalized name and keep the first spelling in the response. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Preserve the file spelling for a known person.
If the file contains Ada Lovelace and author is ada lovelace, max_by_key selects the appended acting name because it selects the last equal-length match. (doc.rust-lang.org) The response then reports ada lovelace, not the spelling in comment.people.
Append user only when no file person matches it ignoring ASCII case. you can still use the existing case-insensitive comparison.
