Problem

When an app was already running before argent instrumented it, native-network-logs answered restart_required without starting capture, so after restart-app the next call returned 0 requests: the app's launch traffic was lost.

Approach

Request capture before answering that the app needs a restart. The relaunched app then turns capture on as soon as it connects, so its launch requests are recorded.

Tests

  • Recorded demo on an Expo app in an iOS simulator, started before argent: native-network-logs → restart_required, restart-app, native-network-logs. Before: count 0. After: 198 events (42 launch requests, including the JS bundle).
  • New unit test checks capture is requested before restart_required is returned; it fails on main.
  • New blueprint test with a fake app on the real socket: a connected app is activated, an app connecting after restart_required or reconnecting is activated at its handshake, a refused com.apple.* app never is. Fails with the .add removed, the handshake replay removed, activation only when blocked, or activation before the precheck.
  • First call for an already-connected app now returns a note that earlier requests (the launch) weren't recorded; covered by the blueprint test, not re-recorded on a simulator.
  • Full tool-server suite, tsc, typecheck:tests, eslint, prettier and knip pass.
  • Not verified on a physical device or a remote simulator.
  • No docs change needed: features/network.mdx already says capture starts when native inspection is activated and earlier requests are not captured.

Screenshots

Before

native-network-launch-before.mp4

After

native-network-launch-after.mp4

When the app was not yet instrumented, the first call answered
restart_required before registering that capture was wanted, so the
relaunched app recorded nothing until the agent's next call and its launch
requests were lost. Register the intent before the precheck, so the
relaunched app starts capturing as soon as it connects.

📝 Walkthrough

The network inspection API now reports whether activation started. The network logs tool uses this result to add a note when earlier requests were not captured. Tests cover activation timing, reconnects, restart-required results, and apps that cannot be instrumented.

The tool activates inspection before checking blocked state. When activation starts on the call, a successful response notes that earlier requests were not captured and that capturing launch traffic requires restarting the app and calling again. Tests cover connected apps, restart-required results, reconnects, and refused system apps.

[Diplomat, Opus 5.5]: I ran this end to end on an iOS 18.5 simulator. The test app sends 13 timed requests in its first 8 s and was started before argent instrumented it. The flow was native-network-logs (answered restart_required), then restart-app, then polling native-network-logs. Main captured only the 3 requests sent after the first successful call; this branch (db24a6c; 91c0509 only removes a comment) captured all 13, including the one sent at t=0. Locally, prettier, eslint, typecheck:tests and the full tool-server suite (4 shards) pass.

Two problems that predate this change came up and are filed separately: #1433 (once capture is armed, the app drops its cookies and bypasses its redirect delegate; with this change that also covers the relaunch restart_required asks for) and #1434 (limit handling).

Activation ran before the precheck's Apple-system-app rejection, so a
refused call still armed capture for that app for the life of the service.
Run the precheck first, and keep activation before the restart_required
answer.
The first call for an app arms capture, so an app that was already running
(including one argent launched) answered ok with count 0 and its launch
requests silently missing. That first answer now carries a note saying
earlier requests were not recorded and to restart-app to capture the launch.
Runs the real native-devtools blueprint against a fake app socket: a
connected app is activated, an app that connects after restart_required
is activated at its handshake, a reconnect is re-activated, and a refused
Apple system app is never activated.

[Diplomat, Opus 5.5]: I re-ran this at 58d3e91 on an iOS 18.5 simulator against a test app that sends 13 timed requests in its first 8 s. restart_required → restart-app → native-network-logs captured all 13, with no note. launch-app → native-network-logs returned count 0 with the note, and after restart-app the next call captured all 13. Locally, prettier, eslint, typecheck:tests and the full tool-server suite (4 shards) pass. I also ran 13 mutants against the 16 tool-server test files that touch this path, and 11 were killed. The two comments below are both reproduced against the real blueprint.

…k answer

The note was decided when capture was turned on, so a call that answered
init_failed or not-connected used it up and the next ok came back as a bare
count 0. The blueprint now records the gap (capture turned on for an app that
was already running, including a provider's lent agent at its handshake) and
the tool takes it only on the ok path. On a provider-attached device the note
no longer advises restart-app, since a relaunch there ends capture.

[Diplomat, Opus 5.5]: I re-ran this at 82c1aec on an iOS 18.6 simulator with a test app that sends 13 timed requests. After restart_required → restart-app, all 13 were captured and there was no note. After launch-app the first answer was ok with the restart-app note, the next call had no note, and after restart-app all 13 were captured. With clear/limit on the first call and across a tool-server restart, every answer matched the description. A provider-attach harness (real Registry and blueprint, fake provider socket) confirmed that a failed first call no longer uses up the note and that no answer advises restart-app there. All 14 mutants of the new lines that change behavior were killed, including the four from the earlier test-coverage thread. Locally, prettier, eslint, typecheck:tests and the full tool-server suite pass, apart from e2e-tool-aliases, which also fails locally on main. This review posts 1 comment.

[Diplomat, Opus 5.5]: Activation now runs before the NATIVE_DEVTOOLS_NOT_CONNECTED throw below, so on a provider-attached device that error message is false: it says "No network log is being captured for it", but this call has just armed capture. In a harness with a real Registry, the real blueprint and a fake provider socket, the first call after a cold attach threw that message. The provider's handshake then replayed the activation, and the next call returned ok with the note. After a provider hang-up, the first call threw the same message, and a request the app sent after that throw was still in the next answer (count: 1). The tool description (line 44) also presents this error as final on these devices, so an agent that trusts it gives up on a capture that is actually running. Why the first call throws at all predates this PR, filed as #1561.
