Description

Adds upload_resumable to the AgentKit actions client. It uploads a file of any size to a Google API that supports resumable uploads (Drive, Cloud Storage and YouTube) through a connected account. The content goes in chunks through the Scalekit proxy, a failed chunk resumes instead of restarting, and the call returns the created resource. It is available as client.actions.upload_resumable and client.connect.upload_resumable.

def upload_resumable(self, connection_name: str, identifier: str, path: str, *,
    data: bytes | bytearray | memoryview | IO[bytes] | os.PathLike[str], total_bytes: int | None = None,
    content_type: str = "application/octet-stream", metadata: Mapping[str, object] | None = None,
    method: Literal["POST", "PATCH", "PUT"] = "POST", query_params: Mapping[str, str | int | bool] | None = None,
    chunk_size: int = 4 * 1024 * 1024, max_retries: int = 3, timeout: float | None = None,
    on_progress: Callable[[UploadProgress], None] | None = None) -> dict[str, Any]

Inputs

  • data: bytes, a binary file object, or a pathlib.Path (the SDK opens and closes the file).
  • Total size: taken from bytes, a path or a seekable stream. Otherwise pass total_bytes, or leave it unknown.
  • Memory: about one chunk is read at a time.
  • metadata: sent as the JSON body of the session-start request, for example {"name": ..., "parents": [...]}.
  • method="PATCH" on /upload/drive/v3/files/{id} replaces an existing file's content.
  • on_progress: receives an UploadProgress(bytes_committed, total_bytes) each time the server confirms more data, and once on completion.

Retries

  • Session start: the request that starts the upload session is never retried.
  • Which failures: a chunk that fails with 408, 429, 500, 502, 503, 504, a timeout or a connection error is retried.
  • How a retry works: the SDK backs off with full jitter, honours Retry-After up to 30 s, asks the server how many bytes it stored, and resumes from there. It gives up after max_retries consecutive failures without progress.

Errors (in scalekit.common.exceptions):

Error When it is raised
ScalekitUploadException A 4xx or 5xx answer, or retries ran out. Carries status_code, headers, body, upload_id and bytes_committed.
ScalekitUploadSessionExpiredException (subclass of ScalekitUploadException) The server reports the upload session gone (404 or 410). The SDK does not start a new session.
ScalekitUploadProtocolException The server's answers break the upload protocol: no upload id, an invalid Range, completion before all data was sent, or a final body that is not a JSON object.

Other behaviour

  • Input validation: inputs are checked before any request. That includes rejecting ?, #, dot segments (including percent-encoded ones), spaces and control characters in path.
  • 401 handling: after a 401 from Scalekit itself, the SDK refreshes its token and resends once. A provider's 401 is never resent. If the refresh itself fails, the client's usual exception propagates unchanged.
  • Secrets: errors never carry the access token. The underlying requests exception is kept as __cause__, with its prepared request removed.

request is unchanged.

Usage

from pathlib import Path

file = client.actions.upload_resumable(
    "googledrive",
    "user_123",
    "/upload/drive/v3/files",
    data=Path("video.mp4"),
    content_type="video/mp4",
    metadata={"name": "video.mp4"},
    on_progress=lambda p: print(p.bytes_committed, p.total_bytes),
)
print(file["id"])

Testing

Check Result
make lint pass
python -m unittest tests/test_resumable_upload.py 94 tests, OK
python -m unittest discover -s tests without credentials same results as main: 313 run; the 34 errors are the existing credential-gated BaseTest suites
ruff check, ruff format --check, mypy --strict on the new modules clean

The offline tests replay scripted HTTP sequences. They cover:

  • Ranges: known and unknown totals, exact multiples of the chunk size, zero bytes, and partial commits.
  • Retries: every retryable status, Retry-After, the retry budget, and session expiry.
  • 401 handling: Scalekit 401 versus provider 401, and single-flight refresh across threads.
  • Content and protocol errors: stream length mismatches and protocol errors.
  • Paths and redaction: path validation and redaction.

Live tests (tests/test_resumable_upload_live.py) ran against a test environment's Google Drive connection, 5/5:

  • a known size in 256 KiB chunks;
  • a non-seekable stream of unknown size;
  • zero bytes;
  • PATCH to replace a file's content;
  • PATCH to a missing file, which returns 404.

They need SCALEKIT_ENV_URL, SCALEKIT_CLIENT_ID, SCALEKIT_CLIENT_SECRET and TEST_AGENTKIT_UPLOAD_IDENTIFIER, plus optionally TEST_AGENTKIT_UPLOAD_CONNECTION (default googledrive). Without them they are skipped. They delete every file they create.

Release

No release (skip-release). The notes wait in .changes/unreleased:

client.actions.upload_resumable(connection_name, identifier, path, data=...) uploads a file of any size to Google Drive, Cloud Storage and YouTube through a connected account: the content is sent in chunks (4 MiB by default), a failed chunk resumes instead of restarting, and the call returns the created resource as a dict. data takes bytes, a binary file object or a pathlib.Path; if the upload session expires, the call raises ScalekitUploadSessionExpiredException and does not start a new one.

The fragment's reference link is pinned to v2.21.0. Re-pin it at release time if the version differs.

client.actions.upload_resumable(connection_name, identifier, path, data=...)
uploads content of any size to Google Drive, Cloud Storage and YouTube
through the proxy using Google's resumable upload protocol. Content is sent
in chunks (4 MiB by default, multiples of 256 KiB) with at most one chunk in
memory. A chunk that fails with a timeout, connection error or HTTP 408,
429, 500, 502, 503 or 504 is resumed from the committed offset after a
status query, with full-jitter backoff and Retry-After (429/503, capped at
30 s). The session-start request is never retried, except one resend after
refreshing the Scalekit token on a Scalekit-issued 401. Returns the final
JSON object.

Adds UploadProgress (scalekit.actions.types) and ScalekitUploadException,
ScalekitUploadSessionExpiredException and ScalekitUploadProtocolException
(scalekit.common.exceptions). ActionClient.request is unchanged.

Tests: 72 credential-free tests with a scripted transport, plus live tests
that run only when SCALEKIT_* credentials and
TEST_AGENTKIT_UPLOAD_IDENTIFIER are set.

- Never hand out more lookahead bytes than requested, so a stream whose
  read(n) returns more than n bytes cannot produce a chunk larger than
  chunk_size.
- Reject line breaks in connection_name and identifier with ValueError
  before any network call.
- Detach the sent request from a requests exception before keeping it as
  __cause__, so the Authorization header is not reachable from the cause
  chain.
- Docs: OSError in Raises; the session-start resend after a Scalekit 401;
  ScalekitUploadException is raised for a 4xx or 5xx start response.
- Tests: unexpected 2xx on a chunk, single-flight refresh across threads,
  a token already rotated by another caller, non-retryable transport
  errors, ChunkedEncodingError retry, every retryable status, an
  over-returning stream, header line breaks, and a token canary on the
  cause chain.

Rename the edge-case test class and describe its comments as behaviour.
Detach the request from a response without a type suppression, and state
precisely which errors have their sent request detached: the upload's own
proxy requests, not a failed token refresh.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Live upload tests now name their Drive files sdk-upload-test-python-<run>-*;
the cleanup sweep matches the new prefix.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
… retries

- Reject spaces and control characters in path before any network call,
  and check that the built URL stays under /proxy/ with no dot segments.
- Keep the current chunk until it is fully committed, and resend from the
  offset the server reports, including a lower offset inside the chunk.
- A 308 that stores no new data counts as one retry and is resent
  directly, without a status query; when retries run out it raises
  ScalekitUploadProtocolException.
- Reset the retry count and report progress only when the server confirms
  data beyond the highest offset so far, so alternating offsets cannot
  keep an upload alive forever.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ling

- When the token refresh after a Scalekit 401 fails, raise the client's
  own authentication error unchanged, as ActionClient.request does,
  instead of wrapping it in ScalekitUploadException.
- A 308 that confirms every byte of the final chunk (including a 308 to
  a zero-byte upload) raises ScalekitUploadProtocolException at once:
  no closing request, no retry, no duplicate completion progress.
- Treat application/*+json as JSON when recognising a Scalekit 401.
- Reject blank connection_name, identifier and content_type.
- Docs: memory use is about one chunk at a time; document the refresh
  error and the new protocol error case.
- Live tests: sweep an "Untitled" file only when it was created after
  the run started and its size matches one of the run's payloads.
- Release note wording updated.

Tried the Python path for a large Drive upload through a connected account: pathlib.Path in, chunked resume, typed upload exceptions.

After this ships, a Python developer can call actions.upload_resumable for any-size Google uploads and get progress plus a clear session-expired error without restarting from byte zero.

Requests

  1. Point the changelog Reference link at main (or drop the version pin) — it currently targets v2.21.0, but this head is still 2.20.0 and that tag is not cut yet. (unreleased changelog yaml)

@saif-at-scalekit thanks for trying it. On the Reference link: I'm keeping it pinned to a release tag on purpose. Our release-notes rules ask for links to REFERENCE.md at the tag that ships the change, so the CHANGELOG keeps pointing at the docs as they were for that version, even after main moves on. The link 404s until the tag exists and starts working the moment the release is published.

As the PR description says, if this ships in a version other than v2.21.0 (for example, because the 2.20.1 security patch goes out first), the pin is re-checked when the release is prepared, before the tag is cut.
