[SK-2195] feat(mcp): add access_level to create_session_token - #219
AkshayParihar33 wants to merge 2 commits into
Conversation
Bump proto to v0.1.155.0 and regenerate. create_session_token takes an
optional access_level ("FULL" or "READ_ONLY") and sends it only when set,
so existing callers keep full access.

READ_ONLY.A backend generated from the pre-change schema can ignore the new protobuf field and apply its default full-access behavior. The SDK response contains only the token and expiry, so it cannot detect this mismatch. A caller can therefore receive a full-access token while requesting
READ_ONLY.Keep this SDK feature gated until the backend rollout is complete, or reject

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * docs(mcp): correct connection_name casing note The connection is matched without regard to case and the token is issued for the MCP server URL built from the stored name; only that URL is case-sensitive. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * docs(mcp): align connection session token examples and errors Use one example across docstrings, AGENTKIT.md and the release note, and list the bad-request cases in the AGENTKIT.md entry. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * feat(mcp): mint connection tokens through create_session_token Fold the connection case into create_session_token on both McpClient and client.actions.mcp: pass exactly one of mcp_config_id or the new keyword-only connection_name (sent as key_id). Existing positional and keyword calls with mcp_config_id are unchanged. Both/neither target, a blank target or a missing identifier raise ValueError before any request. Typing overloads describe the two valid call shapes, and McpClient's return annotation now matches the (response, call) tuple it returns. Remove create_connection_session_token, which was never released. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * fix(mcp): keep session-token annotations importable on older Pythons Use typing.Optional and typing.Tuple instead of PEP 604 unions and built-in generics, and show client.mcp.create_session_token's tuple return type in AGENTKIT.md. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * fix(mcp): keep the config-ID session-token path as in v2.20.0 Limit the new client-side checks to the connection form of create_session_token. With mcp_config_id and no connection_name: - client.mcp builds the request from the arguments as given, as before: an empty, whitespace or None config ID and an empty identifier go to the server. A private sentinel default for mcp_config_id lets an explicit None still reach the server; only a call that passes neither mcp_config_id nor connection_name raises ValueError. - client.actions.mcp keeps its previous checks and messages ("mcp_config_id is required", "identifier is required"). With connection_name: passing mcp_config_id too, an empty connection_name, or a missing or empty identifier raises ValueError before any request; a whitespace name or identifier goes to the server. Annotations in the changed code use X | None and tuple[...] again, since the package already requires Python 3.10. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * docs(mcp): note the pending connected account for connection tokens When the environment does not require an active connected account, the server creates a pending connected account for the identifier before minting a connection session token. Say so in the create_session_token docstrings and AGENTKIT.md. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * docs(mcp): pending connected account is created only when none exists The server reuses the identifier's existing connected account on the connection and creates a pending one only when there is none. Say so in the create_session_token docstrings and AGENTKIT.md. Description
Read-only MCP session tokens (SK-2195).
create_session_tokennow takes an optionalaccess_level:"FULL"or"READ_ONLY". It can also mint a token for a single connection's MCP server, added in #221.Why: the backend can now mint MCP session tokens limited to read-only tools (scalekit-inc/scalekit#2754). A
READ_ONLYtoken sees only tools annotatedread_only_hint: true. Other tools are left out oftools/listand refused ontools/call, whatever tools the MCP configuration or connection exposes. Until now the SDK had no way to ask for one. What changes:
client.actions.mcp.create_session_token(scalekit/actions/actions.py)mcp_config_id,identifier,expiryaccess_level: Optional[str] = None, and keyword-onlyconnection_name(#221)client.mcp.create_session_token(scalekit/mcp.py)access_level, set on the request only when notNone, andconnection_name, sent askey_idMakefilePROTO_REFv0.1.150.0v0.1.155.0, regenerated withmake generateCHANGELOG.md,.changes/unreleased/Behavior:
access_levelomitted (None): the field stays empty on the wire, and the server treats empty as full access. Same token as today."FULL": every tool the configuration or connection exposes."READ_ONLY": only tools annotated read-only."read_only"or"WRITE_ONLY") is rejected by the server withINVALID_ARGUMENT. The values are case-sensitive. The SDK does not duplicate that validation.mcp_config_idorconnection_name. Calls withmcp_config_idbehave exactly as in v2.20.0.The proto bump also brings in the other proto changes made between those two tags, including the new
scalekit/v1/triggerspackage. That is why the generated diff is larger than this feature.Breaking? No. The new parameters are optional, and existing calls send exactly the same request as before. There's no version bump here; it can go in the release branch.
Rollout: hold the release until the backend change is proven stable in production. Until then, a backend that predates
access_levelsilently ignores the field and mints a full-access token.Usage
Existing code: unchanged, keeps working (full access)
New: mint a read-only token
New: mint a token for one connection's MCP server
The lower-level
client.mcp.create_session_token(...)takes the same arguments.Testing
