LGTM, one suggestion to further clarify things a bit.

Somewhat related question: do we also want to provide a small script or macro to compare two .json outputs for convenience (e.g. to compare ours to a third-party reader's)? And in the same vein, one to compare the .roots (RNTuple comparison tool pending..)?

Yes, to be explored. Maybe we can get away by just diffing, but that pushes the complexity on the output to be exactly identical...
