fix(common): raise instead of exiting when a PAON, UPRN or USRN is missing - #2291
Conversation
…ssing
check_paon() caught its own ValueError and called exit(1). The Home Assistant
integration runs the scraper in-process via async_add_executor_job, so the
resulting SystemExit is a BaseException that HouseholdBinCoordinator's
`except Exception` cannot catch: a missing or mistyped house number took the
update coroutine down instead of being reported as an update error.
check_uprn() and check_usrn() had the same shape with the opposite failure:
they swallowed the ValueError entirely, printed to stdout and returned None,
so an absent UPRN fell through to a confusing failure further downstream.
All three now raise ValueError with no print and no exit, matching
check_postcode() above them and the contract CONTRIBUTING.md already
documents ("if the parameter is used but no value is given, they will throw
an exception"). check_paon() also rejects "" as check_uprn/check_usrn
already did, so a blank house number from the HA config flow reports itself.
Behaviour change: anything relying on the process exiting, or on
check_uprn/check_usrn returning None, now sees a ValueError. No caller did:
the only consumer of a return value is SouthHollandDistrictCouncil, and the
only test pinning the old semantics is updated here.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Reject whitespace-only values in all three validators. A value such as " " passes each missing-value check, so each validator returns True without a usable house number or identifier. The form exposes these fields as strings, and the contributor contract says a used parameter with no value should raise an exception. (github.com)

Check .strip() only for strings so the change does not reject non-string values such as numeric 0. Add a whitespace-only case to each parameterized test. Based on learnings, whitespace-only identifiers and user input represent missing values.

The defect
check_paon()caught its ownValueErrorand calledexit(1):The Home Assistant integration runs the scraper in-process (
async_add_executor_job(self.ukbcd.run)), andSystemExitis aBaseException, soHouseholdBinCoordinator._async_update_data'sexcept Exceptionat__init__.py:456cannot catch it. A missing or mistyped house number took the update coroutine down instead of surfacing as an update error. It was also untestable — the old test had to catchSystemExitand could not assert on the message.check_uprn()andcheck_usrn()had the same shape with the opposite failure: they swallowed theValueErrorentirely, printed to stdout and returnedNone, so an absent UPRN fell through to a confusing failure further downstream. The fix
All three validators now raise
ValueError, with noprintand noexit. This matchescheck_postcode()directly above them, which has always raised, and it matches the contractCONTRIBUTING.md:213already documents: "if the parameter is used but no value is given, they will throw an exception." No doc change was needed — the code now does what the docs said.check_paon()also now rejects""ascheck_uprn/check_usrnalready did. The HA config flow registers the house-number field asvol.Required("number") = cv.string(config_flow.py:307), andcv.stringaccepts an empty string, so a blank house number previously passed validation and failed obscurely later; now it reports itself.Behaviour change
Anything relying on the process exiting, or on
check_uprn/check_usrnreturningNone, now sees aValueError. I checked every caller — ~50 forcheck_paon, ~200 forcheck_uprn:SouthHollandDistrictCouncilconsumes one (if not check_uprn(user_uprn): raise ValueError(...)). Still correct; its guard is now simply unreachable. Left as-is to keep the diff to the validators.HaringeyCouncilandSloughBoroughCouncilare the only councils whoseinput.jsonentry omits the value a validator checks. In both, the call sits insideif user_uprn:/elif user_paon:, so the argument is already truthy and nothing changes.check_paoncaller has an emptyhouse_numberininput.json(checked programmatically across all 351 entries).test_ceredigion_county_council,test_gloucester_city_council) patch it out entirely.test_check_paon_invalid, updated here. For the CLI, a missing
-nnow produces a traceback rather than a friendly message andexit 1. That is already what an invalid postcode does, sincecheck_postcoderaises andcollect_data.run()has no top-level handler — so this makes the three validators consistent with the existing convention rather than introducing a new one.CardiffCouncil.py:83,148andSouthTynesideCouncil.py:67have their own bareexit(1)calls with the same problem. Left alone to keep this PR to the shared validators; worth a follow-up.Test plan
Verified locally:
poetry run pytest uk_bin_collection/tests custom_components/uk_bin_collection/tests --ignore=uk_bin_collection/tests/step_defs/ -q→ 480 passed, 0 failed. (The playbook's usual sandbox-only failures —test_check_postcode_*,test_create_webdriver_local— pass here; this machine has a real UK connection and a local Chrome.)test_common_functions.py: each validator parametrized overNoneand"", assertingValueError, the message, and that nothing is printed to stdout.test_coordinator_surfaces_validator_error_as_update_failedin the HA suite, driving a realcheck_paon(None)throughHouseholdBinCoordinator._async_update_dataand asserting it arrives asUpdateFailedwith the message intact. I confirmed this test actually guards the regression: withcheck_paontemporarily reverted toexit(1), it fails withSystemExit: 1escaping the coordinator — the exact production symptom.--local_browser True, on three affected councils: GatesheadCouncil, PowysCouncil, SouthHollandDistrictCouncil — 3 passed. (Gateshead and Powys arecheck_paoncallers; South Holland is the one caller that consumescheck_uprn's return value.)poetry run blackon all three changed files. Not verified: the other ~245 councils that call these validators were not run live. The change only alters the failure path for a
None/""argument, and the three councils above exercise the success path through bothcheck_paonandcheck_uprn, but I have not run the full suite.councils/*.pyfile, so the-klist is empty and the integration job will run the entire live suite (~350 councils). Expect a long run with the usual crop of IP-block failures — those are not regressions from this change.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
