fix: repair six councils (Ceredigion, Gloucester, and the four Cloudflare Turnstile councils) - #2283
Conversation
The council wrapped the "Postcode Search" link's label in a <span>, so it is now `<a href="...REFUSE_ROUTES"><span>Postcode Search</span></a>`. XPath's text() selects only an element's own direct text nodes, so `//a[contains(text(), 'Postcode Search')]` stopped matching the anchor even though the text is plainly on the page, and the scraper timed out on a 10s wait for a link that was right there. Match the form id in the href instead, which also survives the Welsh translation of the label, and keep a `contains(., ...)` label match as a fallback in case the form id changes instead. The selector is now a module constant so it can be tested directly. Verified live from a UK residential connection: 2/2 runs return 4 bins. This council passed earlier the same day, so the markup changed under it. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The address dropdown is populated asynchronously once the postcode lookup returns, and the <select> is present and clickable before its options arrive. The scraper slept 2s, waited for the element, then selected immediately, which raced the data: roughly one run in three died with "Cannot locate option with value: 100120479507" on a perfectly healthy lookup, and it read like a stale UPRN in input.json rather than a timing bug. Wait for the option itself, re-finding the select on each poll so a re-render can't hand back a stale element. If the UPRN genuinely never appears, raise a ValueError naming it, the postcode and how many addresses were offered, instead of letting Selenium's NoSuchElementException imply bad test data. Verified live from a UK residential connection: 5/5 runs pass, against 2/3 before. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

…uncils Four councils - Chichester, East Lindsey, East Renfrewshire and Stockton-on-Tees - are behind Cloudflare Turnstile. Plain ChromeDriver cannot satisfy it however its flags and User-Agent are dressed up: the challenge is served on the form POST, so the scraper clears the postcode step and then times out on the address dropdown, which reads as a selector change. 0.173.0's User-Agent realignment was enough for Boston and Great Yarmouth, which failed identically, but not for these. undetected-chromedriver does get through, verified live on all four. It needs a real browser window, so create_webdriver gains a `stealth` flag that uses it when a local display is available and falls back to the ordinary driver otherwise, returning None rather than raising so callers keep their own diagnostics. This also collapses MidlothianCouncil's inline copy of the same trick, which hardcoded `version_main=146` and so stopped starting once Chrome moved past 146 - the same staleness that caused the Turnstile misdiagnosis in the first place. undetected-chromedriver detects the version itself. Honest limitation, now in each council's wiki_note: this only works where a visible Chrome window can be opened - the CLI or API server on a desktop, or a Linux server with Xvfb. It does NOT work through a remote headless Selenium grid, which is what the Home Assistant Selenium add-on provides, so HA users of these five councils are no better off. Verified live from a UK residential connection: all five pass the step_defs suite. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Do not suppress failures from address selection.
If select_by_value raises after it is called, _run suppresses the exception and the call-count assertions still pass. Set the fake driver’s page_source to valid empty HTML and let parse_data complete. Then remove this broad exception handler so selection failures fail the tests.

Handle Wayland-only displays when launching Chrome.
If WAYLAND_DISPLAY is set, DISPLAY is absent, and XDG_SESSION_TYPE is not wayland, this check permits a stealth launch without selecting Chrome’s Wayland backend. Chromium can select X11 in that state, so the visible browser cannot start. Select the Wayland backend for this supported display state. (chromium.googlesource.com)

undetected-chromedriver 3.5.5 patcher.py version_main absent latest stable installed Chrome source
💡 Result:
In **undetected-chromedriver 3.5.5**, `patcher.py` does include `version_main`; it defaults to `0` (auto). With auto mode, `fetch_release_number()` uses the Chrome for Testing **Stable** release endpoint for Chrome 115 and later. It does **not** inspect the installed Chrome version to choose a matching driver—the code fetches the latest Stable driver version instead. ([sources.debian.org](https://sources.debian.org/src/python-undetected-chromedriver/3.5.5-4/undetected_chromedriver/patcher.py?utm_source=openai))
So “`version_main` absent” may mean it’s omitted from your call, not missing from the package. Normally, `uc.Chrome()` leaves it in auto mode; to select a Chrome major version explicitly, pass `version_main=<major>`. The package’s 3.5.5 entry also documents that parameter. ([github.com](https://github.com/ultrafunkamsterdam/undetected-chromedriver/blob/master/undetected_chromedriver/__init__.py?utm_source=openai))
If you’re seeing an error that `version_main` is missing from `patcher.py`, verify which file Python actually imports: the published 3.5.5 source has it, so the installed file may differ from that release or be shadowed by another installation. Pass the installed Chrome major version to undetected-chromedriver.
undetected-chromedriver 3.5.5 selects the latest Stable driver when version_main is omitted. If local Chrome is older, the stealth launch can fail. The helper then falls back to ordinary ChromeDriver, which cannot satisfy the Turnstile flow.
Pass the detected major version when available. Update the related unit test to assert the integer version.

undetected-chromedriver 3.5.5 Patcher user_multi_procs concurrent Windows locked binary retry behavior
💡 Result:
For **undetected-chromedriver 3.5.5**, `user_multi_procs=True` is **not a reliable Windows locked-file retry mechanism**:
- It scans the shared data folder, keeps the newest `*chromedriver*` file, and tries to delete the others. If the newest binary is already patched, it reuses it and returns. The code uses `with Lock()`—a newly constructed lock at that point, rather than the class-level `Patcher.lock`—so this does not establish a shared lock between independent patcher instances. ([sources.debian.org](https://sources.debian.org/src/python-undetected-chromedriver/3.5.5-4/undetected_chromedriver/patcher.py))
- If it cannot reuse a patched binary, `auto()` tries to unlink the target. On Windows, a locked file can raise `PermissionError`; unless `force=True`, the code only checks whether the existing file is already patched. If so, it returns; otherwise it continues to fetch and unpack a driver. There is **no retry/backoff loop** in this path. With `force=True`, it taskkills matching driver processes and calls `auto()` again. ([sources.debian.org](https://sources.debian.org/src/python-undetected-chromedriver/3.5.5-4/undetected_chromedriver/patcher.py))
- The destructor appears intended to retry deletion, but its loop condition is `elapsed > 3` immediately after starting the timer. That is false, so the loop does not run; and with `user_multi_procs=True`, it would break before unlinking anyway. ([sources.debian.org](https://sources.debian.org/src/python-undetected-chromedriver/3.5.5-4/undetected_chromedriver/patcher.py))
**Practical implication:** use `user_multi_procs=True` to reuse an existing patched binary, not to serialize concurrent Windows updates or wait for a locked binary to become available. The 3.5.5 source does not provide a functioning retry for that case.

Coordinate concurrent undetected-chromedriver launches.
create_stealth_webdriver() calls uc.Chrome(options=options) without launch coordination. Multiple integration jobs can reach this path. undetected-chromedriver 3.5.5 uses a shared cache, so a concurrent Windows launch can fail when the cached binary is locked.
user_multi_procs=True does not serialize independent patcher instances or provide a reliable locked-file retry. Use a concurrency-safe launch strategy. If you use user_multi_procs=True, provision and reuse its patched binary before accepting concurrent launches.

Preserve the lookup error when the dropdown is absent.
If the postcode lookup never creates chooseAddress, the wait reaches its timeout, but this second find_element raises NoSuchElementException. The caller receives that exception instead of the intended ValueError with the postcode and offered-address count. Treat an absent dropdown as zero offered addresses when building the timeout error. Selenium’s wait ignores NoSuchElementException during polling by default. (selenium.dev)

Select the UPRN inside the wait.
If the page re-renders after address_option_present returns True, the second lookup can find a dropdown without the UPRN. select_by_value can then fail despite the successful wait. Make selection part of the polled operation, and retry when that operation encounters a stale element or a missing option. codecov/project went red on #2283: the stealth work added Selenium lines that offline tests can't execute, and CeredigionCountyCouncil sat at 12% coverage with no test of its actual parsing. Drive parse_data against a saved snippet of the live results form, with the browser mocked out, so the schedule-panel parsing is exercised offline: multiple panels each contributing their own bins, ordinal date suffixes, a panel whose date doesn't parse, and an empty page. Writing this caught a mistake in my own first fixture rather than a bug: a flattened version of the markup makes the first panel claim every waste_image on the page via find_next_siblings. The live DOM wraps each panel in its own "eb-<hash>-panel" div, which is what scopes the lookup, so the fixture mirrors that nesting and a comment says why it matters. Ceredigion 12% -> 73%, project total 81% -> 83%. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

it directly.
Gloucester — a fixed sleep racing an async dropdown
The address
<select>is populated once the postcode lookup returns, and is presentand clickable before its options arrive. The scraper slept 2s, waited for the
element, then selected immediately — so about one run in three died with

The Turnstile four — a new opt-in stealth driver
Chichester, East Lindsey, East Renfrewshire and Stockton-on-Tees are behind
Cloudflare Turnstile. Plain ChromeDriver can't satisfy it however its flags and
User-Agent are dressed up: the challenge comes on the form POST, so the scraper gets
through the postcode step and then times out on the address dropdown — which is why
these were triaged as selector changes, and why 0.173.0's User-Agent realignment
fixed Boston and Great Yarmouth but not these.
undetected-chromedriver does get through. Verified live on all four, with no changes
to the scrapers' own logic — only the driver. So
create_webdrivergains astealthflag that uses it when a local display is available and falls back otherwise,

MidlothianCouncil's inline copy of the same trick, whichhardcoded

detects the version itself, so nothing is pinned.
What this does not fix. It needs a visible Chrome window: the CLI or API server on
a desktop, or a Linux server with Xvfb and
DISPLAYset. It does not work througha remote headless Selenium grid, which is what the Home Assistant Selenium add-on
provides — so HA users of these five councils are no better off, and each council's
wiki_notenow says exactly that rather than implying a general fix. That's also whatI've told #2249, hence

test_ceredigion_county_council.py(6) runs the real selector against both the oldand new markup with lxml, including a test asserting the old selector really did
miss the nested label, plus a Welsh label and a renamed form id.
test_gloucester_city_council.py(4) drivesparse_dataagainst a fake driverwhose dropdown gains its options only after several polls, asserting the scraper
keeps polling and then selects once; plus both error-path cases.

Known wart
undetected-chromedriver's own teardown raises
OSError: [WinError 6] The handle is invalidfrom its__del__on Windows. It's noise from the library after the work isdone, not from this code, and it doesn't affect results — but it makes live output
untidy on Windows.
Still broken after this
Of the 15 councils that were failing, this leaves 9, and none of them has a code fix:
Ashfield (the council's own JS throws), Canterbury (#2215 outage), East Hampshire
(expired TLS certificate), Gedling (API read timeouts), Halton (reCAPTCHA), Horsham
(connection resets), Torfaen (itouchvision 403s), plus Rhondda Cynon Taff (#2276) and
Swansea (#2252), which have their own PRs.
