Adds GET /repositories/python/python/{repository_pk}/packages/ to browse distinct package names with pagination, name filters, and stored versions. Clients can select a complete repository snapshot by HREF or PRN.

Replaces #1359, originally implemented by @TenSt. The original commit retains TenSt's authorship, Assisted-By: Cursor, and cherry-pick provenance. The follow-up commits apply @gerrod3's latest review requests:

  • Move the package list into a nested, read-only PythonRepositoryPackageViewSet with its own filtering, serializer, pagination, and schema.
  • Use repository.latest_version() and NamedModelViewSet.get_resource() for snapshot selection; reject incomplete snapshots and versions from other repositories.
  • Use pulpcore's repository-version content API and enforce repository permissions and domain boundaries.
  • Defer unused large metadata columns, loading descriptions only for each package's newest version.

Closes #1358.

Validation: all 26 unit tests pass on both pulpcore 3.123.1 and 3.105.25. The 13 catalog functional cases, 8 publication functional cases, and the domain catalog regression pass in isolated oci-env agent environments. Python, pulpcore, and pulp-file clients were regenerated. Ruff lint/format checks and the draft documentation build pass.

  • Commits are cleanly separated with meaningful messages, preserving the original contribution and the review follow-up.
  • A changelog entry has been added.
  • Follows the Pulp policy on AI Usage, with AI attribution in all commit messages.
  • User documentation and test coverage have been added.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added a read-only REST API endpoint for browsing packages in a Python repository. By default, it shows packages from the latest complete repository snapshot; you can also select a specific complete snapshot.
    • Browse package names, descriptions, author and license details, and available versions. Filter by normalized package name, sort results, and use limit/offset pagination.
    • Packages with the same normalized name are grouped, and matching distributions for a version are combined into one entry.
  • Documentation

    • Added a guide to browsing the package catalog, including snapshot selection, filtering, sorting, and pagination.

TenSt and others added 2 commits October 27, 2026 14:09
Clients can walk every package in a repository version. Each row is one package name, and each stored version is one entry.

Closes pulp#1358.

Assisted-By: Cursor
(cherry picked from commit bc2c3d8)
Give package listings their own serializer, name filters, ordering, and
pagination while retaining the repository packages URL. Resolve snapshots
with pulpcore's resource helpers and reject incomplete or unrelated versions.
Use the repository-version content API instead of duplicating membership
and URI resolution logic, and enforce the parent repository's domain.

Add regression coverage for filtering, generated clients, snapshot selection,
repository permissions, incomplete versions, and domain isolation. Remove
unrelated workspace exclusions and whitespace changes from the original PR.

Walkthrough

The change adds a read-only package catalog endpoint nested under Python repositories. It returns one row per normalized package name from the latest complete repository version by default, or from a selected complete version, with package metadata, stored versions, filtering, and pagination.

Changes: Package Catalog API

Layer / File(s) Summary
Package aggregation and response shape
pulp_python/app/catalog.py, pulp_python/app/serializers.py, pulp_python/app/pypi/views.py, pulp_python/tests/unit/test_catalog.py
Catalog helpers assemble package rows from repository-version content, select one distribution per stored version, and sort versions using PEP 440 ordering. Serializers define package and version fields. The unit test checks query behavior and assembled data.
Repository endpoint and snapshot selection
pulp_python/app/viewsets.py, AGENTS.md, CHANGES/1358.feature, docs/index.md, docs/user/guides/*
The endpoint resolves the default or requested repository version, checks repository membership and version completion, and supports normalized-name filtering, ordering, and pagination. The guide, feature list, and changelog describe the endpoint and its response.
Catalog endpoint and query validation
pulp_python/tests/functional/api/test_catalog.py, pulp_python/tests/functional/api/test_domains.py, pulp_python/tests/unit/test_catalog.py
Tests cover package grouping, snapshots, versions, filters, pagination, permissions, domain-scoped requests, and incomplete versions.

Publication Name Canonicalization Test

Layer / File(s) Summary
Local distribution fixtures and publication assertion
pulp_python/tests/functional/api/test_crud_publications.py
The test creates a local sdist and wheel with different package-name spellings, then checks that publication lists both files on the canonicalized project page.

Catalog pages for packages with many releases and long descriptions may use unnecessary memory and respond more slowly. The fix is localized, and the remaining risk is bounded enough to merge with owner awareness.

Explanation

Issue #1358 requires a new repository-scoped package list. The reviewed head meets these coding requirements:

  1. Endpoint path: PythonRepositoryPackageViewSet in pulp_python/app/viewsets.py sets endpoint_name = "packages", parent_viewset = PythonRepositoryViewSet, and parent_lookup_kwargs = {"repository_pk": "repository__pk"}. This yields .../repositories/python/python/{repository_pk}/packages/.
  2. One row per name_normalized: distinct_package_names_qs in pulp_python/app/catalog.py applies values("name_normalized").distinct().
  3. Pagination: list() calls paginate_queryset(names_qs) and returns get_paginated_response when pagination is enabled. The count is the number of distinct names.
  4. name_normalized__istartswith filter: PythonRepositoryPackageFilter declares fields = {"name_normalized": core_viewsets.NAME_FILTER_OPTIONS}. The pulpcore constant was not inspected. The PR functional test test_package_list_filters_and_ordering is the evidence for this filter. It was not read.
  5. Row fields: assemble_package_index returns name, name_normalized, summary, description, author, author_email, license, and versions[]. Each version entry has version and license_expression. The serializer field list in serializers.py was not read because its diff was unavailable. Its described fields match the assembled dict keys.
  6. Implied latest complete version: when repository_version is omitted, _requested_repository_version returns repository.latest_version(). An explicit version must belong to the repository and be complete.
  7. Automated tests: test_catalog.py (functional), test_domains.py, and tests/unit/test_catalog.py are present in the PR. Their contents were not read in full. The PR reports them as passing.

No unmet coding requirement was found. The unresolved uncertainty is items 4 and 6 at the pulpcore level, which the PR test coverage is expected to exercise.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes outside the new endpoint are related to it:

  • pulp_python/app/pypi/views.py: SimpleView.list changes order_by("name_normalized") to order_by("name_normalized", "name") for distinct("name_normalized"). This makes the selected display name deterministic. It shares the distinct-by-normalized-name logic used by the catalog. It changes existing simple-index output only in which name variant is chosen. The PR description does not mention this change, so it is a minor disclosure gap, not an unrelated change.
  • pulp_python/tests/functional/api/test_crud_publications.py: the test replaces a live PyPISimple network fetch with local sdist and wheel fixtures. It still checks canonical name handling for msg-parser. This is test refactoring that supports name-normalization coverage.
  • AGENTS.md: documents the constraint that the catalog viewset uses repository membership as its registered model, and the domain check for nested parent lookups. This supports the implementation.
  • Changelog, user guide, and docs index changes: these document the new endpoint (CHANGES/1358.feature, docs/user/guides/catalog.md, related index updates).
  • catalog.py, serializers.py, viewsets.py, and the test files: these implement or test the requested endpoint.

No demonstrated unrelated change was found.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description fills in the core content: it states the endpoint (GET /repositories/python/python/{repository_pk}/packages/), the features (distinct package names, pagination, name filters, stored versions, snapshot selection by HREF or PRN), the follow-up review changes, and validation results. It also links the related issues (#1358 and the replaced PR #1359). The checklist is marked complete, and the changelog entry (CHANGES/1358.feature) and user documentation (docs/user/guides/catalog.md) appear in the raw summary. Minor gaps: the description does not restate the checklist items in the exact template wording, and the 'Closes #1358' line is present but the replacement PR context relies on an external link. These are non-critical, so the description is mostly complete.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 74.29% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 35 functions across 8 files. (5 skipped: 5 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Comment thread pulp_python/app/catalog.py
Check distinct-name pagination, returned version metadata, and deferred
column loading without assuming how pulpcore selects snapshot content.
This fixes the lowerbounds failure on pulpcore 3.105.25 while keeping
coverage for the catalog's query behavior.

Defer unused large metadata fields and load descriptions only for each
package's newest version. Remove the added AGENTS.md guidance as requested.
