This is a Firefox extension that sets focus to the first search input element during the page load.
If you find yourself constantly visiting a site to make a search (eg, IMDB), you are probably not aware of that you can do it right from the Firefox address bar. This plugin may be useful in situations when two or more fields should be filled out, or you want to to use an autocompletion feature that the site provides.
Head to the addon's homepage.
The extension works on a whitelist basis. This means that autofocusing will occur only on sites you have added to the extension's rules. To do that, open the "about:addons" page, click on the Input autofocus, then select the Preferences tab. On the form, click on the Add new rule, then type in a pattern into the Url pattern field.
Typically this would be enough (as the extension tries to detect input fields on a page automatically). Click on the Save button and navigate to the site to check if it works. If it doesn't, you have to specify a CSS selector (see below) in the existing rule.
In 99% situations all you want is a bare domain (e.g. stackoverflow.com).
Wildcard at the beginning means it will match any subdomain (but not the main one!). For
example, *.cnn.com will match edition.cnn.com, but not the cnn.com. If you need both,
then provide two separate rules.
You can be more specific by providing an exact page. For example, github.com/search will match only the
https://github.com/search, but not the https://github.com or https://github.com/pulls.
Remember, you don't have to supply a selector unless the autodetection does not work as expected.
It's very hard to briefly explain such extensive topic as CSS selectors, and I won't even try it.
To see if the input field on the site has any distinct selectors, go to the
site, right-click on the input and choose Inspect. That will open a developer
tools pane. On the Inspector tab, right click on the input element (it will
be highlighted by default). Choose Copy -> CSS Selector. Paste the value
into the Selector field of the extension preferences. If you see a label like
#query or .search-box, then you're in luck. Press Save.
Use Github issues to file a ticket. I hope it will never happen though :)
