Outcome
PostHog contains a daily snapshot of cumulative download totals for AURA’s uploaded GitHub release assets for use in reporting.
Requirements
- Collect download totals for uploaded release assets from the GitHub Releases API at least once per UTC calendar day.
- Send one PostHog event per release asset containing:
- repository
- release ID and tag
- asset ID
- asset name
- cumulative download count
- snapshot date
- Use the GitHub asset ID as the stable asset identifier; asset names alone are not necessarily unique.
- Make retries idempotent so an asset produces no more than one snapshot for a given date.
- Paginate through all in-scope releases and release assets.
- Make failures visible early enough to retry within the same calendar day.
- The implementation may run in this repository’s GitHub Actions or on another suitable runner.
- Store the PostHog project token and any other required credentials securely.
Non-goals
- Calculating or storing daily download increments.
- Reconstructing daily totals from before the first successful snapshot.
- Counting downloads of GitHub-generated source-code ZIP or tar archives.
- Counting GitHub Actions workflow artifacts.
- User-level attribution.
