Summary

  • Add .xlsx ingestion using OpenPyXL read-only streaming.
  • Preserve worksheet, header, row, and cell metadata through chunking, retrieval, and citations.
  • Reject malformed or oversized workbooks with bounded OOXML validation.
  • Support multiple sheets, header overrides, wide rows, oversized cells, and worksheet context.

Validation

  • 180 focused XLSX and shared tabular pipeline tests passed, including UTF-8 BOM and UTF-16 LE/BE OOXML.
  • Rebased on the latest develop.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added support for ingesting XLSX spreadsheets, including visible worksheets, configurable headers, and row-preserving batches with sheet context.
    • Added XLSX batch-size, header-row, per-sheet header, and resource-limit settings.
    • XLSX content is searchable, with row results kept distinct across sheets.
  • Documentation

    • Added guidance on XLSX ingestion behavior, configuration, and limits.
    • Updated the supported tabular formats listing to include XLSX.

📝 Walkthrough

This change adds XLSX recognition, validation, and batch parsing. It routes XLSX and CSV documents through shared tabular indexing, preserves workbook and row metadata through chunking, and uses table identifiers to scope sibling-row retrieval.

Changes: XLSX tabular ingestion

Layer / File(s) Summary
XLSX recognition and configuration
openrag/core/config/..., conf/config.yaml, openrag/core/models/document.py, openrag/services/workers/parsers/parser_dispatcher.py, related tests
Adds XLSX document and MIME type recognition, loader configuration and environment overrides, and parser dispatch wiring.
Workbook validation and batch parsing
openrag/core/indexing/parsers/tabular/*, pyproject.toml, docs/content/docs/documentation/xlsx_ingestion.md, tests/load/xlsx_ingestion/*, tests/unit/core/indexing/parsers/test_xlsx_parser.py, related tests
Adds OOXML preflight validation and an OpenPyXL parser that emits bounded table batches. Shares parser helpers with CSV. Adds parser documentation, benchmarks, and tests.
Table chunking and sheet metadata
openrag/core/chunking/*, README.md, docs/content/docs/documentation/features_in_details.md, tests/unit/core/indexing/parsers/test_xlsx_parser.py
Routes XLSX blocks through table chunking and preserves sheet, column, cell-range, and row metadata in chunks. The tabular-data descriptions now include XLSX.
Streaming tabular indexing
openrag/services/workers/tabular_pipeline.py, openrag/services/workers/pipeline_builder.py, openrag/services/workers/csv_pipeline.py, openrag/services/workers/indexer_actor.py, tests/unit/services/workers/test_csv_pipeline.py
Uses a shared batch pipeline for CSV and XLSX, including storage, topic tagging, replacement cleanup, and failure cleanup.
Sheet-scoped sibling retrieval
openrag/core/retrieval/*, openrag/services/storage/*, related tests
Passes table identifiers through sibling-row lookup and uses them in vector-store filters when provided.

Two benchmark links in the XLSX ingestion documentation may be broken on the published docs site. Replace them with absolute GitHub URLs. This does not affect runtime behavior and is safe to fix alongside the merge.

Just added tests for UTF-8/UTF-16 XLSX files + multilingual content to ensure unusual but valid encodings are preserved safely.

The saved comparison explains the reader decision: Calamine parsed the synthetic fixtures faster, while OpenPyXL provided the required error-cell behavior, predictable workbook semantics, and lower peak memory on the large-row fixture. Calamine was therefore removed from the runtime dependency set rather than retained as an unused fallback.
