Notes
Before
- bring up this page for shortcuts
- logon to class scratch account
- had 6 volunteers for classes that ranged in size from 20 to 30.
- one volunteer (me) stood at the front doing the intro/talking bits.
- the organised with the school that we would be in one room and that the teachers would bring their class to us. In this kind of rota:
- 9.45 – 10.40 – Year 3
- 10.45 – 11.40 – Year 5
- 11.45 – 12.40 – year 6
- 13.45 – 14.40 – Year 4
At start
- what is session about, computers, coding
- Stickers for each student with their name on and volunteers too.
- pen/sticker?
- Video
- Intros - who are we
- get class to Logon to Scratch (username/password)
- Start project on board... (how to save!)
At end
- save work!
- show an example of work done
- all worked really hard, well done!
- metal badge
All Raspberry Pi projects can be found here - https://projects.raspberrypi.org/en/projects
Lessons learned
- had some tech issues at the start, only 15 laptops (not 30 for the full class), but also had 15 ipads.
- had further tech issues in that the new Scratch did not work on the laptops through the school firewall/protections, but worked on iPads :)
- had some issues with scaling/zooming on the iPads, making it tricky to find code blocks.
- not sure the videos at the start helped. Probably better to jump right into after the intros.
- Per project:
- YR3/Jazzy Jumpers - think was quite tricky for them, would recommend a more basic project for students with little Scratch knowledge.
- YR4/Scratch cat skiing - this was a little hard, but generally made progress. One gotcha was the script tells them to use left/right buttons. Worked around this by adding on screen buttons for left/right.
- YR5/tried Falling Stars, but was tough going, little progress made - not a good choice for this group. It is a Coder Dojo project, which probably works better with an older group with more time.
- YR6/switched to Flower Generator - some students made good progress, most got something basic working. Good result.
