Intent: Release prep for v0.5.3, as docs/releasing.md and the header of scripts/release.mjs describe ("Commit it with the version bump in a normal PR"). This PR dates CHANGELOG.md's v0.5.3 section, generates its PR lists, and bumps package.json and package-lock.json to 0.5.3. The owner cuts v0.5.3 from the merged result. Nothing here tags, signs, releases or publishes.

Risk class: protected. package.json and package-lock.json are in .worklane/review.yaml's engine category (line 7: engine: [..., package.json, package-lock.json, ...]), so this waits for the owner. CHANGELOG.md is in no locked category. (measured: grep of review.yaml)

What was generated

Hand-written lines

  • 149 of 149 kept, in order. A script compared every non-empty line of main's v0.5.3 section, apart from its heading, against this branch's section in order. Result: 149 lines checked, 0 missing or out of order. (measured: scratch check.mjs against origin/main:CHANGELOG.md)
  • git diff -U0 -- CHANGELOG.md removes exactly one line, the old heading ## v0.5.3 (unreleased). Every other change is an addition. (measured)

PRs listed

How it was verified

All commands ran in the worktree with HOME and the state dirs set to scratch directories.

  • npm run check:denylist: denylist: 1309 files clean. (measured)
  • npm run typecheck: passed, with no errors. (measured)
  • npm run build: passed. (measured)
  • node --import ./dist/test/isolate.js --test dist/test/changelog.test.js dist/test/owner-terminal-removed.test.js dist/test/comment-policy-cli.test.js: tests 23, pass 23, fail 0. (measured)
  • Not run locally: test/release.test.ts. It exercises the tagging step by signing throwaway tags with throwaway keys, and this builder's brief forbids tags, signatures and keys on this machine. CI runs it. That step's code isn't changed here. (inferred)
  • Not run: npm test and the tagging step node scripts/release.mjs 0.5.3, both forbidden here. CI runs the full suite.

Package size

  • 0 bytes (inferred). The only packed change is package.json's version string, which is the same length. CHANGELOG.md and package-lock.json aren't packed (measured: neither is in npm pack --dry-run --json's file list).
  • This branch's totals: tarball 1,392,508 bytes, unpacked 4,677,341 bytes, 473 entries, package.json 2,142 bytes. (measured: npm pack --dry-run --json --ignore-scripts)
  • That build had no dist/web (0 dist/web/ files), so these totals are below what CI's package-budget test counts. (measured)
  • Main's numbers were not measured. See Refusals.

Notes for the owner

  • Guess: providers: a provider's base_url only to a host root allows in /etc/<cli>/providers.json [PROTECTED: owner merges] #607's listed title contains <cli> (.../etc/<cli>/providers.json), copied from the PR title. When the section becomes the GitHub release notes, GitHub may render <cli> as an HTML tag and drop it. That is a guess about rendering, not a check. The generated list isn't hand-edited, because the next regenerate would undo the edit. You can check the notes file before gh release create.
  • Some PRs are grouped oddly, for example fixes under Features. That is groupOf's title and label heuristic, unchanged here. (inferred)

Refusals

  • git -C <worktree> checkout origin/main -- package.json package-lock.json CHANGELOG.md was refused by the permission check ("Irreversible Local Destruction"). It was meant to put main's files in place for a moment, to measure main's pack size. Not retried. On the coordinator's instruction, main's size was not measured any other way.

What this can never do

  • It tags, signs, releases and publishes nothing. Those stay the owner's steps in docs/releasing.md, and release.yml still only stages on a signed tag checked against main's .github/release-signers. (inferred: no script, workflow or signer file changed)
  • It changes no code, dependency or script. Only the version fields change in package.json and package-lock.json. (measured: git diff)

Compromised component

  • Agent user, coordinator: this PR changes no code they run. A tampered CHANGELOG list would show up as wrong release notes, which the owner reads before tagging. (inferred)
  • Dashboard, hub viewer, other instances: nothing they read or run changes. (inferred)
  • Someone with push access: they could change the version or the notes before merge. The owner merges this PR and reviews the diff, which is three files with only additions apart from the heading and the version. (inferred)

New dependencies

None. (measured: git diff touches no dependencies or devDependencies)

…nd-written notes kept)

CHANGELOG.md's v0.5.3 section is dated and its PR lists are generated by
`node scripts/release.mjs changelog 0.5.3`, which keeps the hand-written
Upgrading, After install and guardrail notes above them. package.json and
package-lock.json say 0.5.3, from `npm version 0.5.3 --no-git-tag-version`.

Test (fails without): none; no code changes. The changelog tests (including
the one that keeps every hand-written line of a section) pass on this tree.

CHANGELOG.md: main's v0.5.3 section taken as it is, so this branch's removal of the empty layout heading is
dropped (#828 already dated v0.5.3 without it). The #811 bullet moves to a new `## v0.5.4 (unreleased)` section.

… release

v0.5.3 is released (71316eb, #828). Merged as it was, #738's bullet would have landed in the released v0.5.3
section, which this PR is not part of. It now opens a new "## v0.5.4 (unreleased)" section, under "### Upgrading
(from v0.5.3)". The section ends with the generated "### Guardrail changes" heading, so the release keeps every
hand-written line.

Test (fails without): test/changelog.test.ts, "every section ... keeps its hand-written text" and "an unreleased
section is all hand-written" (both fail with the bullet in v0.5.4 and no ending heading; measured).

v0.5.3 was released (#828, main 71316eb) while this PR was open, and merging main left the bullet under the
released section. It now sits under v0.5.4 (unreleased), Upgrading (from v0.5.3), ended by an empty generated
heading as the release tool needs; main's v0.5.3 text is unchanged (the diff against main is insertions only).

Test (fails without): none; test/changelog.test.ts passes (10/10).

#828 released v0.5.3 without #726, and the merge of main 71316eb left
both #726 bullets under the released `## v0.5.3 (2026-10-19)`. They move
to a new `## v0.5.4 (unreleased)` above it: the existing-install step
under "Upgrading (from v0.5.3)", the guardrail note under "Guardrail
changes: what each one does", closed by an empty "### Guardrail changes"
so the release keeps them (test/changelog.test.ts). v0.5.3's released
text is main's exactly: `git diff origin/main -- CHANGELOG.md` is
additions only.

Part of #726 (round 13).

v0.5.3 is released (#828), so the bullet merged in from main sat in the
released notes. It now opens a v0.5.4 (unreleased) section, which ends with
the generated "### Guardrail changes" heading the release lib needs to keep
hand-written notes. v0.5.3's text is exactly main's.

Test: test/changelog.test.ts and test/release.test.ts pass (changelog.test
failed with the section but without the closing heading).

Brings #769's round 13: main 71316eb (v0.5.3 released by #828) and
#726's notes moved to v0.5.4 (unreleased).

CHANGELOG.md conflicted where this branch had its #726 bullets under the
old v0.5.3 (unreleased). Resolved so v0.5.3 is main's released text
exactly, including its "No sudoers rule is added, so no machine-helper
rerun" bullet, and every #726 entry is under v0.5.4 (unreleased): the three
Upgrading bullets, the set-policy sudoers note under After install, and
the guardrail note, ended by an empty "### Guardrail changes".

docs/releasing.md step 9 keeps "0.5.3: no" as main has it and gains a
0.5.4 line for set-policy. `git diff origin/main -- CHANGELOG.md
docs/releasing.md` is additions only.

…ased v0.5.3 section

Main released v0.5.3 (#828), and merging it put the #832 Upgrading bullet inside the released section. The bullet
now opens a new `## v0.5.4 (unreleased)` / `### Upgrading (from v0.5.3)`, closed by an empty
`### Guardrail changes`, so the release step keeps every line of it.

Test: test/changelog.test.ts passes (10/10), including "an unreleased section is all hand-written, so the
release keeps every line of it".
