Reopens #1390 This PR has been rebased onto the current upstream main and is ready to be reviewed and merged. All changes are isolated to the relevant test files or cleaning utilities. No unrelated changes are included. All ruff and black checks pass. |

Added TestValidateMapping class to tests/test_cleaning.py with 5 tests for the _validate_mapping helper.
All ruff checks pass.
