`execution-specs` depends on a submodule that contains common tests that are run across all clients, so we need to clone the repo with the --recursive flag. Example:

This change does not seem to be related to the --evm-trace flag. What needs to be updated is the trace section of the contributing doc

Thanks for the feedback. You're right, that was an unintended change. I've reverted it and pushed the correction to the same branch. The CONTRIBUTING.md file should now be updated correctly
