Actual output of nearest.m as run by old octave 3.8.2 from rpm on actual RHEL7 rbind.chem.duke.edu 
Note version 3.8.2 was the last 3.x version of octave released 2014-08-07 and unlikely to have any changes ever.
That is the next release of octave after 3.8.2 was 4.0.0 on 2015-05-23, and there will likely never be any backported 3.8.3/3.9.
