Two decided bugs, one branch.

Closes #1595
Closes #1575

#1575: one oneTBB per executable

Every USD-enabled executable linked two static oneTBB runtimes: the 2022.2 copy cmake/vendor/OpenUSD.cmake built for USD, and vcpkg's 2023.1 (OpenVDB's). USD's archive came first on the link line, so OpenVDB, compiled against 2023.1 headers, ran on 2022.2's internals, with /FORCE:MULTIPLE hiding any clash.

Per the owner's decision (option 1):

  • USD builds against vcpkg's oneTBB. USD's own oneTBB ExternalProject is gone. A new usd manifest feature installs tbb; OpenUSD.cmake finds it GLOBAL and passes its TBB_DIR to USD; the engine links TBB::tbb. The cache key now names the full oneTBB version (usd-363a7c8d-tbb2023.1.0), so every box rebuilds USD once. An empty TBB_VERSION is a configure error.
  • USD v25.11 needed a patch to build against 2023.1. Its workTBB headers test TBB_INTERFACE_VERSION_MAJOR without including <tbb/version.h>, which 2022.2's blocked_range.h used to bring in. patch-usd-tbb-version.cmake adds the include.
  • OLO_USD_INSTALL_DIR is refused at configure with the reason: a prebuilt install bundles its own oneTBB. No CI job used it.
  • The guard. cmake/OneTbbGuard.cmake fails the build, before OloEngine compiles, if any executable or shared library links more than one oneTBB core library (Windows and non-Windows names; tbbmalloc is not counted). It reads the generated per-config link line from the CMake File API codemodel, requested with cmake_file_api(QUERY ...) so a fresh tree's first configure answers it on every generator.
  • CMake 3.27. cmake_file_api() is a 3.27 command, so the root now declares cmake_minimum_required(VERSION 3.27) with cmake_policy(VERSION 3.25) (no policy changes); the build docs, deployment doc, README and the VS2022 script say 3.27. Every supported path already met it (presets 4.2, CI runners 3.31 / 4.4). The guard and the USD -P scripts pin their own policies: under CMake 3.x a script starts with every policy OLD, which failed the first CI round's Linux jobs at if(IN_LIST).
  • A USD stage import test. UsdStageImportTest opens a real .usda through the importer registry and checks the unit scale, the up axis, the UV origin, triangulation and the generated normal. No test imported a stage before.

#1595: limit card coverage growth

The 1.2 ceiling stays, per the owner's decision; the growth is limited where the coat is thin. PointCoverageGrowth widens a card toward what its members cover as a lock. Measured, without growth the horses' cards already cover their strands at 32 m (short coat 1.145, long 1.013; 9 and 14 strands a card), and full growth put the short coat at 1.211. The foxes (26–30 strands a card) and dogs (45–127) fall 4–15% short without it.

The stream now carries 1 + reach (growth - 1), with reach = clamp((strands per card - 1) / 31, 0, 1) (GroomCardCoverageGrowthReach, applied in GroomBuildSource::FromLevel). A card standing for one strand is that strand; 32 is the lock the growth law was validated on. The reach comes from curve counts the asset already carries, so no groom is re-cooked and the format is unchanged. The dogs' reach is exactly 1, so their stream is unchanged.

Ruled out on the way, by shader A/B on one binary: the card's front-surface depth pull and tube radius, widened with the card. Using the cooked radius moved the short coat only 436 → 431 px; the growth's ~5% excess is independent of the pull.

  • Delivery (loose vs cooked). The limit is applied when the strand stream is built from a loaded card level, so loose and packed delivery reach it the same way, and the cooked format is unchanged. GroomAnimalsAcceptanceEvidenceTest.LooseAndPackedGroomsAreTheAssetsThatWereCooked and RuntimeRepresentationStreamingPackTest.PackedGroomKeepsCardsWhileFinePreparationWaitsAndPlantsResolveFromTheGame pass. The live editor rows above load the re-exported horse coats loose.
  • MSAA / upscale. Card widths are set in pixels of the render resolution, so MSAA 4, FSR1 and FSR2 are cells above.
  • By eye. The short coat's card and strand crops at Far and Handover are indistinguishable: same silhouette and density, no ballooning. The dogs keep their density from every angle.

Found and fixed

  • cd6d138 + c6164c1 fix(build): OpenUSD's nested build ran at the native tool's default (--parallel with no count), outside the build lock's memory-aware cap. It now takes the lock's CMAKE_BUILD_PARALLEL_LEVEL, or the physical core count. Under MSBuild the count goes to /MP (CL_MPCount, one project at a time, because USD compiles every project with /MP), with /nodeReuse:false. Found rebuilding USD for Build: every USD-enabled executable links two static oneTBB versions (USD's 2022.2 and vcpkg's 2023.1) #1575.
  • cbb7b29 fix(build): a cold USD build from a Ninja tree (dev-cached, clangcl) picked LLVM's GNU-style clang++ from PATH and failed at cxxabi.h; the parent's clang-cl fails too. A non-VS Windows tree now builds USD with the Visual Studio generator (OLO_USD_VS_GENERATOR). Latent until Build: every USD-enabled executable links two static oneTBB versions (USD's 2022.2 and vcpkg's 2023.1) #1575's key change: every earlier cache had been seeded by an msvc tree.
  • bfd7215 fix(assets): the shipped ShortCoatHorse / LongCoatHorse grooms had been re-encoded to format v5 with growth 1.0 on every card point, never re-exported, so the live scene drew cards the evidence never validated. Re-exported with the test's own export case; the bindings, human coat, scene and registry are byte-identical.
  • 50ffdf3 fix(tests): GroomSimulationVisualEvidenceTest, 5 of 8 red on master: its runtime camera was a default SceneCamera (orthographic, −1..1 depth), so the coat 60 units away was culled, the solver never stepped, and the suite read stale stats from the previous editor capture. Attributed with a per-frame stats print and three sibling worktrees' binaries. 8/8 pass; the coat now moves 130 464 px on every path.
  • 756d742 + 318adb1 fix(tests): RendererMemoryAccountingEvidence.AGroomAndALawnLeaveNoPooledFramebufferBehind: the same default camera culled its tuft, and it passed only after another fixture left the renderer drawing it. 11/11 pass, alone and as a suite.
  • 5e5cca3 fix(tests): GroomVegetationStreamingEvidenceTest.PreparedImpostorLayerRebuildWaitsForItsOwnGpuUpload expected perf(foliage): stage warm rebuilds without blocking rendering #1603's now-asynchronous foliage re-bake on the next frame. It now waits for it.
  • 15fcc06 fix(build): the guard's first form wrote a File API query file, which a fresh msvc tree never answered. Caught by the msvc cell; now cmake_file_api(QUERY ...).
  • 96aa8eb docs(mcp): olo_foliage_rebuild, a consented-write MCP tool from perf(foliage): stage warm rebuilds without blocking rendering #1603, had no row in the MCP guide, so McpDocsCoverage failed on master. Found by this PR's TSan test shard; red on the old guide, green with the row.
  • b52cede docs(tests): test-runtime-camera-defaults-to-orthographic.md, the lesson from the two camera fixes.

Filed, not fixed

Review guide

Where I'd look hardest

  1. OloEngine/src/OloEngine/Groom/GroomLod.cpp (GroomCardCoverageGrowthReach): the reach is coat-wide, from the average strands per card. The asset carries no per-card member count, and computing one would re-cook every groom, the dog-owned ones included. A coat that mixes a dense body with a sparse mane gets one compromise value.
  2. cmake/OneTbbGuard.cmake: it trusts the File API codemodel's libraries fragments to be the link line. It cannot see a library brought in only by a #pragma comment(lib); USD's /DEFAULTLIB:"tbb12.lib" resolves to the same full-path archive (link.exe probe), so today that is the same library.
  3. cmake/vendor/OpenUSD.cmake + build-usd-config.cmake: the cold USD build path ran once on this box (VS generator under dev-cached). The final /MP job-count form was exercised on an up-to-date tree, so the cap's effect on a cold compile is read from the MSBuild props (CL_MPCount → ProcessorNumber), not measured.

What I verified, and how: the red reproduced exactly (1.211, 436/360 px) before any change. The no-growth and no-pull shader arms attributed the excess to growth, not depth. The fix holds every coverage cell under 1.2 on GL Forward, Forward+ and Deferred, keeps the foxes, and leaves the dogs' numbers byte-identical. The guard's negative control fails the build. Debug and Release pass the USD and OpenVDB tests.

Least confident about: the strands-per-card threshold. 32 is the growth law's own validation lock, and the measured coats sit far from the ramp's ends (9–14 vs 26+), but a coat around 20 strands a card would land mid-ramp untested. Also the Debug editor's close with vcpkg's assert-enabled tbb12_debug.lib: the Debug test binary exits clean after USD and OpenVDB work, but the editor's close was not measured.

… per link (#1575)

Every USD-enabled executable linked two static oneTBB runtimes: the 2022.2
copy OpenUSD.cmake built for USD and vcpkg's 2023.1 (OpenVDB's). USD's archive
came first on the link line, so OpenVDB, compiled against 2023.1 headers, ran
on 2022.2's internals, and /FORCE:MULTIPLE would have hidden any clash.

- USD's own oneTBB ExternalProject is gone. USD compiles against vcpkg's
oneTBB (TBB_DIR from find_package(TBB ... GLOBAL)), and the engine links
TBB::tbb. The new `usd` manifest feature installs tbb whenever OLO_WITH_USD
is on. The cache key now names the oneTBB version, so every box rebuilds
  USD once.
- USD v25.11 does not build against oneTBB 2023.1 as shipped: its workTBB
headers test TBB_INTERFACE_VERSION_MAJOR without including tbb/version.h,
which 2022.2's blocked_range.h used to bring in. patch-usd-tbb-version.cmake
  adds the include.
- OLO_USD_INSTALL_DIR is refused at configure: a prebuilt install bundles its
  own oneTBB.
- cmake/OneTbbGuard.cmake fails the build before OloEngine compiles if any
executable or shared library links more than one tbb12 archive. It reads the
generated link line per configuration from the CMake File API codemodel.
- UsdStageImportTest opens a real .usda through the importer registry; no
  test imported a stage before.

OpenUSD's ExternalProject built with a bare `cmake --build --parallel`. A bare
flag means the native tool's default (every core for MSBuild, cores + 2 for
Ninja) and outranks CMAKE_BUILD_PARALLEL_LEVEL, which build-lock.ps1 exports
with its memory-aware job count. So the heaviest one-off build in the tree ran
uncapped under the lock that exists to bound it. Without the flag the nested
build inherits the lock's value. Found while rebuilding USD for #1575.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
An ExternalProject inherits the generator but not the compilers. A cold USD
build from a Ninja tree (dev-cached, clangcl) therefore configured with
whatever compiler PATH offered: LLVM's GNU-style clang++, for which USD takes
its non-MSVC path and fails at `'cxxabi.h' file not found` in
arch/demangle.cpp. Passing the parent's clang-cl fails too, because USD's
compiler defaults treat any Clang as GNU-style (`-Wno-deprecated` reads as
`/wd`). A non-Visual-Studio Windows tree now builds USD with the Visual Studio
generator, which finds the toolset itself; other platforms get the parent's
compilers.

The bug was latent: every USD cache so far had been seeded by an msvc-preset
tree, and the Ninja trees only ever hit it. #1575's new cache key made a Ninja
tree build USD for the first time.

#1595)

PointCoverageGrowth widens a card toward what its members cover as a lock once
a pixel spans more than the cook's. The GroomAnimals horses' cards, 9 and 14
strands a card, already cover their strands at 32 m without it (short coat
1.145, long 1.013), so full growth put the short coat at 1.211 of its strands,
past the card tier's 1.2 ceiling. The foxes (26-30 strands a card) and the dogs
(45-127) fall 4-15% short without it.

The stream now carries 1 + reach (growth - 1), where reach is
(strands per card - 1) / 31 clamped to 1 (GroomCardCoverageGrowthReach): a card
standing for one strand is that strand, and 32 is the lock the growth law was
validated on. The reach comes from the base and card curve counts the asset
already carries, so no groom is re-cooked and the format is unchanged.

Measured (GL, Release, TheCoatKeepsItsCoverageFromNearToFar): short coat 1.167
at 32 m and 1.179 at the hand-over; long coat 1.035 / 1.032; the long coat's
hand-over on Deferred, Forward+, Deferred MSAA 4, FSR1 and FSR2 1.026-1.030.
Foxes 1.006 / 1.020 at range (were 1.010 / 1.027). The dogs' reach is 1: the
Bernese and Samoyed hand-over numbers are identical before and after.

…rowth

The shipped ShortCoatHorse and LongCoatHorse grooms were re-encoded to format v5
by 03cd229, which filled every card point's PointCoverageGrowth with 1.0, but
were never re-exported. So the live GroomAnimals scene drew horse cards that
the evidence never validated: TheCoatKeepsItsCoverageFromNearToFar cooks the
same coats at runtime and measures their real growth (width-weighted 2.18 and
1.74). Regenerated with the test's own OLO_GROOM_ANIMALS_EXPORT=1 case. The
bindings and the human coat came out byte-identical, and the committed scene
already references these groom handles, so GroomAnimals.olo and
AssetRegistry.oar are unchanged. Found while measuring #1595.

…ees the coat

GroomSimulationVisualEvidenceTest drives its motion through RunFrames, which
renders from the scene's primary camera, sixty units back. That camera was a
default SceneCamera: orthographic, with a -1..1 depth range, so the coat at the
origin was outside its frustum. The groom was never submitted, the solver never
stepped, and every GroomRenderStats the suite read was left over from the
previous editor-camera capture: the simulated arm reported the control arm's
zero, the next control arm the simulated arm's one. Five of eight cases failed
on master.

The camera is now a 45-degree perspective one, and the teleport case moves it
with the animal, or the re-seed frame would not draw the coat either. All eight
cases pass: the coat moves 130 464 px on every path within its stretch
tolerance, and a 100 m teleport re-seeds.

… streaming test

#1603 (e9e1e49) prepares a foliage rebuild off the frame and publishes it
when it is ready. PreparedImpostorLayerRebuildWaitsForItsOwnGpuUpload still
expected the re-baked impostor atlas on the next frame and the resident-budget
eviction within two, so it failed on master since that merge. It now waits for
both with the fixture's own WaitForPlants, which bounds the wait by time.

…rective (#1575)

USD's objects carry /DEFAULTLIB:"tbb12.lib" (tbb12_debug.lib in Debug), and
both linkers satisfy it from the full-path TBB::tbb on the link line, so the
engine needs no link directory for it: a link.exe probe links with the full
path and fails LNK1104 without it. vcpkg's Debug oneTBB keeps the teardown
assert USD's own build compiled out; the Debug test binary exits 0 after a
stage import and the OpenVDB imports.

…e that makes it

The guard wrote a File API query file during configure, but CMake reads query
files before it configures, so a fresh tree's first generate wrote no reply. A
configure-dependency marker made Ninja regenerate once to answer it; the Visual
Studio generator's ZERO_CHECK ignored the missing marker, and a fresh msvc
tree's first build failed with "no File API reply".

cmake_file_api(QUERY ...) (CMake 3.27) registers the query during configure and
answers it at the end of the same generate, on every generator, so the marker
is gone. Checked from a cleared File API state on dev-cached (8 binaries) and
msvc (9), with the negative control (USD's old tbb12.lib linked beside
vcpkg's) still failing the build.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
AGroomAndALawnLeaveNoPooledFramebufferBehind asserts that the groom pass drew
before it checks the pass's pooled framebuffer. The fixture's primary camera is
a default SceneCamera, orthographic with a -1..1 depth range, so from z = 6 the
tuft at z = 3 was outside its frustum and never submitted. The case passed only
after another fixture had left the renderer drawing it anyway, and failed alone
and inside its own suite.

The case now gives the camera a perspective projection (the other ten cases'
accounting is left as it was) and ticks until the tuft and the lawn, both
admitted asynchronously, have drawn, bounded at 30 s. 11/11 pass, alone and as
a suite.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A default SceneCamera is orthographic with a -1..1 depth range, so a fixture
camera that does not set a projection culls a subject a few units away. Two
fixtures were red on master for it; the postmortem records how the symptom
looked (stats that follow the previous arm, a test that passes only after
others) and how to tell.

…#1595)

GroomAnimalsAcceptanceEvidenceTest's ladder-on/off crops for both horses at
every stop and the long coat's hand-over on Deferred, Forward+, Deferred MSAA 4,
FSR1 and FSR2, and FoxCoatEvidenceTest's ladder frames, all rendered by the
branch's Release build. Short coat at 32 m: 1.167 of its strands (was 1.211).

…y stepping

Re-captured after the fixture's runtime camera was made perspective: the
simulated frames now show the coat moved by the solver (130 464 px from the
control on every path) instead of the groomed rest pose.

…names

oneTBB's core library is tbb12 / tbb12_debug only on Windows; elsewhere it is
libtbb / libtbb_debug (.a, .so.12, .12.dylib). The guard matched only the
Windows names, so on Linux or macOS it checked nothing and still reported every
binary as linking at most one oneTBB. Checked against both platforms' names,
versioned shared objects and the tbbmalloc / tbbbind libraries it must ignore.

… serially

From self-review of the #1575 change:

- The USD cache key named oneTBB's major.minor only, so a patch bump would
have reused a usd_m compiled against other headers. It now names the full
  version.
- The Visual Studio generator a Ninja tree builds USD with is a cache variable,
OLO_USD_VS_GENERATOR, defaulting to the msvc preset's.
- Dropping the bare --parallel let the nested build take build-lock.ps1's job
count, but outside the lock MSBuild then built USD's projects one at a time.
build-usd-config.cmake decides at build time: the lock's
CMAKE_BUILD_PARALLEL_LEVEL when it is set, the physical core count otherwise.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The memory-accounting groom case compared the pools on the frame the tuft and
lawn were first admitted; every other check in the case runs after usePath's
drain. It now drains the same kDrainFrames first. From self-review.

…es in size

asset-import-usd-alembic.md was already over the 10 KB guide limit and #1575
grew it. The oneTBB section, the Debug-assert note and the toolchain gotcha now
live in usd-onetbb-and-build-toolchain.md with the review's corrections (the
guard's non-Windows names, the full-version cache key, the build-time job
count), and the old guide points at it; it ends smaller than on master.
groom-card-coverage.md's rule 8a is trimmed back under 10 KB.

…he growth reach (#1595)

Its fixture cooks 2500 cards from 12000 strands (4.8 a card), a reach of 0.12,
so its card tier now draws close to its cooked width.

…an unversioned oneTBB

From the second self-review:

- USD compiles every project with /MP, so passing the job count to MSBuild as
/m:N ran N projects each starting a compiler per core. Under a Visual Studio
generator build-usd-config.cmake now builds one project at a time with
CL_MPCount=N (the /MP count MSBuild hands cl), and /nodeReuse:false so no
MSBuild node keeps handles in the shared cache after the build.
- The core-count fallback is validated, then the logical count, then a loud
  error.
- An empty TBB_VERSION is a configure error instead of a cache key of `-tbb`.

…th does

The memory-accounting groom case now asserts that the tuft and the lawn drew
on the frame the wait met that condition, then drains kDrainFrames + 2 frames,
the same as usePath gives every other check. From the second self-review.

asset-import-usd-alembic.md was 16 KB on master. The oneTBB material, the USD
toolchain and job count, the shared-cache section and the /WHOLEARCHIVE gotcha
now live in openusd-build-and-link.md (renamed from the earlier
usd-onetbb-and-build-toolchain.md); the importer guide keeps pointers and both
are about 10 KB. The engine's link comment and build-trees-and-windows-asan
point at the new section. It also notes that a key change leaves the old cache
for deletion by hand, and that changing OLO_USD_VS_GENERATOR on a partial cache
needs its usd-build deleted.

…ard+ (#1595)

TheCoatKeepsItsCoverageFromNearToFar measured the other render paths on the
long coat only, but the short coat is the one whose card growth crossed the 1.2
ceiling. Its hand-over and 32 m cells now run on Deferred and Forward+ too
(MSAA and the upscalers stay the long coat's): 1.169 / 1.161 on Deferred, 1.168 /
1.160 on Forward+, against 1.179 / 1.167 on Forward. New cell artefacts:

🤖 Self-review @ 34b98d9c94431a081904aebb0b84cbbe180ce10d

Reviewed the PR diff in two /code-review passes: high effort on the whole branch, then medium on the commits that answered it.

  • Findings: 19 across both passes · Fixed: 13
    • guard recognises oneTBB's non-Windows names (libtbb[_debug], .so.12, .dylib)
    • USD cache keyed on the full oneTBB version; an empty TBB_VERSION is a configure error
    • the Visual Studio generator that builds USD is overridable (OLO_USD_VS_GENERATOR)
    • nested USD build: never serial, and the cap goes to /MP (CL_MPCount, one project at a time) because USD compiles every project with /MP; core-count fallback validated; /nodeReuse:false
    • memory-accounting case asserts the first draw, then drains kDrainFrames + 2 like every other check
    • the USD guide split into openusd-build-and-link.md; both guides about 10 KB (the old one was 16 KB on master)
  • Dismissed:
    • vcpkg's Debug oneTBB keeps the teardown assert; set TBB_USE_ASSERT=0: measured instead. The Debug test binary exits 0 after USD and OpenVDB work. An overlay port would rebuild tbb and OpenVDB for every box with no reproduction to justify it. Recorded in the guide with the overlay-port route if it ever fires.
    • Reach should be per card, not per coat: the asset carries no per-card member count. Computing one re-cooks every groom, the dog-owned ones included, which the handover ruled out. Named under "Where I'd look hardest".
    • base.GetCurveCount() counts curves the cook skipped as too short: GroomAsset validation rejects any curve under MinPointsPerCurve, so a loadable groom has none to skip.
    • The outer Ninja runs other jobs beside the nested USD build: bounded below twice the lock's count, once per machine, on a cache miss; the nested build is the dominant consumer.
    • A key change orphans the old ~10 GB cache: the accepted one-time rebuild; the guide now says to delete the old usd-* directory.
    • Changing OLO_USD_VS_GENERATOR on a partial cache fails on a generator mismatch: loud, and documented (delete usd-build).
    • -ltbb beside a full-path libtbb counts twice: deliberately strict. A by-name -ltbb resolves through the linker's search path and can pick a different (system) oneTBB, so it is reported.

📝 Walkthrough

OpenUSD now builds against vcpkg’s oneTBB, with CMake build controls and a duplicate-link check. Groom card coverage growth is scaled by card reach. Rendering evidence tests update camera setup and wait for specified rendering and vegetation conditions.

Changes: OpenUSD build and linking

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure OpenUSD with vcpkg oneTBB
CMakeLists.txt, vcpkg.json, cmake/vendor/OpenUSD.cmake, cmake/vendor/patch-usd-pdb.cmake, cmake/apply-vendor-patches.cmake, cmake/CheckArchiveSize.cmake, cmake/CommonProperties.cmake, README.md, docs/ops/*, docs/agent-rules/asset-import-usd-alembic.md, docs/agent-rules/build-trees-and-windows-asan.md, docs/agent-rules/openusd-build-and-link.md
The usd feature adds the vcpkg TBB dependency. OpenUSD uses that package, rejects OLO_USD_INSTALL_DIR, and includes the TBB version in the USD cache key. The root CMake minimum is 3.27, with policy behavior pinned to 3.25.
Control USD build execution
cmake/vendor/OpenUSD.cmake, cmake/vendor/build-usd-config.cmake, cmake/vendor/patch-usd-tbb-version.cmake, docs/agent-rules/openusd-build-and-link.md
The USD build selects generator-specific toolchain and parallelism settings. A patch adds the TBB version header to two OpenUSD source files.
Check oneTBB links and import USD stages
CMakeLists.txt, cmake/OneTbbGuard.cmake, OloEngine/CMakeLists.txt, OloEngine/tests/CMakeLists.txt, OloEngine/tests/UsdStageImportTest.cpp, docs/agent-rules/README.md, docs/agent-rules/asset-import-usd-alembic.md, docs/agent-rules/openusd-build-and-link.md
CMake checks selected binary targets for multiple oneTBB libraries. The engine links TBB::tbb; the USD integration test imports a generated quad and stages the plugin tree.

Groom card coverage growth

Layer / File(s) Summary
Calculate and apply card growth reach
OloEngine/src/OloEngine/Groom/GroomLod.h, OloEngine/src/OloEngine/Groom/GroomLod.cpp, OloEngine/src/OloEngine/Groom/GroomStrandMesh.h, OloEngine/src/OloEngine/Groom/GroomStrandMesh.cpp
The groom LOD code calculates reach from base and LOD curve counts. Stream construction applies reach to coverage growth above one.
Test and document coverage growth
OloEngine/tests/Groom/GroomLodContractTest.cpp, OloEngine/tests/Rendering/PropertyTests/GroomAnimalsAcceptanceEvidenceTest.cpp, docs/agent-rules/groom-card-coverage.md
Contract tests check reach bounds and streamed growth. The animal acceptance test adds short-coat LOD measurements, and the groom guidance states the reach formula.

Rendering evidence tests

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure runtime cameras
OloEngine/tests/Rendering/PropertyTests/GroomSimulationVisualEvidenceTest.cpp, OloEngine/tests/Rendering/PropertyTests/RendererMemoryAccountingEvidenceTest.cpp, docs/agent-rules/test-runtime-camera-defaults-to-orthographic.md, docs/agent-rules/README.md
The tests set perspective camera parameters. The groom simulation test also moves the camera with the groom and body during teleport.
Wait for rendering and vegetation conditions
OloEngine/tests/Rendering/PropertyTests/GroomVegetationStreamingEvidenceTest.cpp, OloEngine/tests/Rendering/PropertyTests/RendererMemoryAccountingEvidenceTest.cpp
The tests wait for atlas rebuild, vegetation eviction, and groom and foliage draws before their assertions.

Foliage rebuild tool documentation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Document foliage rebuild diagnostics

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[ #1595 ] is addressed: the PR scales card growth by strands per card, keeps the 1.2 ceiling, and reports horse, fox, and dog coverage checks. [ #1575 ] is addressed: USD uses vcpkg oneTBB, the guard checks duplicate core libraries, and the PR adds the USD stage-import and VolumeImport test coverage for Debug and Release. Directly linked [#1608] remains unmet. The PR reports unchanged Bernese and Samoyed hand-over results and does not recook finer card levels or reduce the breed fixture memory footprint.

Resolution

Implement [#1608] by recooking finer Bernese and Samoyed card levels and bringing the breed-test fixture within the memory ceiling, then verify the hand-over test against its 5% bar. Alternatively, remove the direct link if this PR does not include that issue.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The OpenUSD, oneTBB, groom-coverage, and related test changes support [#1595] or [#1575]. The PR also changes GroomSimulationVisualEvidenceTest, RendererMemoryAccountingEvidenceTest, and GroomVegetationStreamingEvidenceTest for separate camera-culling and asynchronous-wait failures. It adds camera guidance and documents the unrelated consented-write olo_foliage_rebuild tool from #1603. These changes do not implement the linked issue requirements.

…BB guard

A script run with `cmake -P` starts with every policy unset, and CMake 3.x
then applies OLD behaviour: the guard's if(... IN_LIST ...) (CMP0057) became
"Unknown arguments" and failed the TSan and UBSan jobs, whose runners have
CMake 3.31.6. CMake 4 has no OLD for that policy, so the local trees and the
Windows jobs passed. OneTbbGuard.cmake, build-usd-config.cmake and
patch-usd-tbb-version.cmake now call cmake_minimum_required(VERSION 3.27).
Reproduced and checked with CMake 3.28 (WSL) and 4.4.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…needs

The root CMakeLists declared 3.25, but cmake/OneTbbGuard.cmake requests its
codemodel with cmake_file_api() (3.27) in every configuration, so a 3.25 or
3.26 configure would stop at an unknown command. The root now fails clearly
under 3.27; the policies stay at 3.25's, so nothing else changes behaviour.
Every supported path already meets it (presets 4.2, CI runners 3.31 / 4.4).
The build and deployment docs and the README say 3.27. From CodeRabbit.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A missing CMakeCache.txt, or one without CMAKE_GENERATOR, used to fall through
to the non-Visual-Studio branch and run MSBuild with /m:N on top of USD's /MP,
the oversubscription the script exists to avoid. Both are now errors. The
version-header patch's comment names the two files it edits, and the other
three that test the macro, unambiguously. From CodeRabbit.

…USD scripts

From review of the previous push:

- The root now says cmake_minimum_required(VERSION 3.27), with
cmake_policy(VERSION 3.25) keeping the policies as they were, instead of a
hand-written version check beside a 3.25 declaration that tools read.
- Win-GenerateProjectVS2022.bat's header says 3.27, like the docs.
- patch-usd-pdb.cmake runs in the same PATCH_COMMAND as the oneTBB patch and
now pins its policies too. Both USD patch scripts refuse a USD_SRC that is
not a directory, instead of reporting a changed OpenUSD layout.
- The oneTBB patch's comment states which files it edits and how the other
four get the macro, matching the pinned source.

Checked with CMake 3.28 (WSL) and 4.4.

#1603 (e9e1e49) registered olo_foliage_rebuild, a ProjectWrite tool, without
a row in docs/guides/mcp-diagnostics-server.md, so McpDocsCoverage's
EveryRegisteredToolAppearsInTheGuide and
EveryConsentGatedToolIsMarkedConsentedWriteInTheGuide fail on master. Found by
this PR's TSan test shard 3/4; red locally on the old guide, green with the row.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
From review of the previous push:

- CheckArchiveSize.cmake and apply-vendor-patches.cmake now pin their
policies too, so no -P script in the repo runs with CMake 3.x's OLD
defaults. Both run unchanged under CMake 3.28 and 4.4 (the archive check on
  OloEngine.lib; the FSR2 patch restored and re-applied).
- CommonProperties.cmake's CMP0138 note and build-trees-and-windows-asan.md
say where the 3.25 policies now come from (cmake_policy) and that the floor
  is 3.27.
- The olo_foliage_rebuild row lists every refusal the handler returns.

🤖 Self-review @ 8313d48f5d58efc90e3bc4f095735cd724a63974

Re-reviewed the commits pushed after the first self-review: 34b98d9c9..adcc799d8 and adcc799d8..96aa8ebf5 at medium effort, 96aa8ebf5..HEAD at low.

  • Findings: 11 · Fixed: 9
    • the CMake 3.27 floor is declared in cmake_minimum_required, with cmake_policy(VERSION 3.25) keeping the policies; the VS2022 script, CommonProperties' CMP0138 note and build-trees-and-windows-asan say so
    • every -P script in the repo pins its policies (the two USD patches, build-usd-config, the guard, CheckArchiveSize, apply-vendor-patches), each checked under CMake 3.28 and 4.4
    • both USD patch scripts refuse a USD_SRC that is not a directory
    • the oneTBB patch's comment matches the pinned source (which files it edits, how the other four get the macro)
    • the olo_foliage_rebuild guide row lists every refusal the handler returns
  • Dismissed:
    • Share the patch scripts' USD_SRC check: two three-line checks in two scripts run from one PATCH_COMMAND; a shared include would be more code than it saves.
    • Policy-pin boilerplate is copied: one line per script is the convention CMake documents for -P scripts; the comments no longer cross-reference each other.

Review comments at @docs/guides/mcp-diagnostics-server.md:
- Line 3078: Update the `olo_foliage_rebuild` documentation to remove the
unconditional off-frame preparation claim. Describe that warm rebuilds launch
CPU generation asynchronously, resource preparation advances during scene
updates, and the listed conditions can trigger synchronous `GenerateInstances`;
retain the guidance to use `olo_representation_streaming_stats` and the existing
behavior details.

Comment thread docs/guides/mcp-diagnostics-server.md Resolved
Only rebuilding an existing canopy on an unchanged terrain is prepared off the
frame; a first generation, a changed height field or wind envelope, or a host
with no task workers regenerates in the next scene update
(FoliageRenderer::RequestRebuild). From CodeRabbit.

Reviewed 8313d48f5..HEAD (the olo_foliage_rebuild row now says when its rebuild runs off the frame, answering CodeRabbit) at low effort.

  • Findings: 0
  • CI on this head: 35 SUCCESS, 2 SKIPPED by design (asan.yml:1766: on the self-hosted arm the ASan + LSan (Linux/Clang) job runs the whole suite itself, so its shard matrix and coverage step are skipped). 0 unresolved review threads.
