feat(groom): author and look-develop the rigged human bob - #1599
Conversation
Cover the swept part during the full head turn and feather the hairline and tips. Record the final cooked pair across supported GL/Vulkan paths, cold runtime delivery, hybrid participation and measured cost.
Self-review @ 804c1ceReviewed the complete diff against StandardsNo remaining concrete standards findings. The exporter originally introduced two primary cameras; The final asset, scene, artifact and source-frame identities were independently checked. Recipe counts, geometry bytes, card counts, six runtime entities and phase-specific test totals agree with the report. Generated evidence is distinguished from source changes; temporary scenes, preferences, registry and unrelated PNG churn are excluded. SpecNo remaining concrete specification findings. Earlier scalp stripes, abrupt root edges, sparse tips and the front-part fan were corrected and re-inspected through rest and the complete head turn. The hybrid coverage gap was closed with odd resolution, supported MSAA, configured TAA-off and true no-resolve, full motion and near/card/far/near participation measurements. The report distinguishes supported paths from capability fallbacks, sampled animations from playback footage, and technical proof from film-quality acceptance. All 44 artifact identities and 50 animation source frames were checked. Ordered side highlights still need human visual judgment; the issue remains referenced, without automatic closure. Increased memory and 43–44 ms frame cost are recorded explicitly. Remaining findings: Standards 0; Spec 0. No findings were silently dismissed. The ordered highlight pattern is an explicitly disclosed visual uncertainty. |
📝 Walkthrough
Priority: ➖ Normal Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to The change adds a hair asset, scene settings and tests. The remaining issue is that a missing or failed groom load in a test could give a vague failure or crash rather than a clear message. Fix it before or soon after merge; it does not affect shipped behavior. Pre-merge checks |

Final verification at Both CodeRabbit findings were withdrawn after source verification: canonical generator hashing is intentional, and successful groom import/decode guarantees a non-null result. The independent self-review still covers the exact head. Final all-files pre-commit passed and the worktree is clean. No CI retries or additional source fixes were required. The PR body now records the completed checks. Native evidence and remaining visual/performance limitations are in the linked report. This is ready for human visual review; no merge or issue closure was performed. |
The rigged head previously wore a sparse translucent veil across its face and shoulders. This authors a reproducible centre-parted, jaw-length bob on the actual scan, then cooks and binds it through the engine and adjusts the existing fibre/simulation settings. Feathered roots and short regrowth keep the part covered through the head turn; separated lock tips stay above the shoulders. Shared shaders, the scan/rig/skin, and dog/breed assets are unchanged.
Refs #1593. Film-quality acceptance remains a visual decision: side highlight bands are still orderly. The native A/B and motion report includes the reference, provenance, cost and limitations. No test tolerances were widened. The denser asset increases memory and does not meet the programme's 16.7 ms frame budget; #1588/#1589/#1594 retain their existing performance ownership.
TAA table values describe the configured flag. StochasticAlpha requests a scene resolve even when that flag is off (#1429); separate actual no-resolve captures ignore the request on all paths, inspect the declared sub-pixel bald fallback, and restore it. This fallback is not a supported quality mode for the shipping groom.
Diff scope: 13 source/test/doc files (1,089 added / 30 removed lines), 19 generated scene/manifest files (28 / 28), two evidence JSON files (14,315 generated lines), 44 lossless review images/animations (30.3 MiB), and four cooked assets (94.1 MiB total current size). Raw campaign captures and the game distribution are excluded.
Verification
Abbreviated matrix; individual captures, actual support/sample/upscaler results, RT history, timings and log digests are in
docs/testing/evidence/hair1593/verification.json. Every supported path below ran on an RTX 4090 / driver 617.14, fresh clang-cl Release / Vulkan SDK 1.4.357.0, using the build-lock wrapper.Full generated Acceptance: both fixed head cameras on all six raster paths, plus the two re-cooked Fox coats inspected on every raster path/backend. Full-scene captures have advancing camera/frame indices but trigger the MCP stale threshold at multi-second frame times; they are integration proof. Clean held-head scenes supply the quality, motion and cost evidence.
CI and review
Final head
804c1ce685f313d5b7681613913c0a97c63708ef: 29 successful checks, three intentional skips, zero pending or failed checks. Windows build and three test shards passed; the coverage guard proves they partition all 2,704 configured CTest entries. Windows ASan, Linux ASan/LSan, UBSan and TSan passed, including each applicable shard coverage guard. Shader floor and pre-commit passed.Steam's build is outside the changed seam and was filtered out. Linux ASan/LSan ran the suite successfully on the self-hosted monolithic arm, so its alternative hosted shard and coverage jobs were skipped. No CI retries or source fixes were needed.
CodeRabbit withdrew both findings after checking the source: the generator hash intentionally identifies canonical UTF-8/LF text, and both groom-loading APIs guarantee non-null results on success with a named asset diagnostic on failure. Both review threads are resolved. Independent standards/spec reviews cover this head; the PR is mergeable. Film-quality judgment remains as described below.
Found and fixed
59dca7b22fix(groom): re-cook fox coats in the current asset format — full-scene verification found baseline version-4 loader refusals. Re-exported the unchanged recipes; bindings and colour texture stay byte-identical. Cold/warm regression includes both coats; GL/Vulkan raster frames inspect them.afbd7c0b1fix(test): export the hair game with one primary camera — self-review found duplicate primary cameras. The exporter now reuses the fixture camera and asserts both unique primary count and selected identity before serialization.Filed, not fixed
None. Existing independently owned performance and scan-geometry issues remain referenced in the report.
Review guide
Where I'd look hardest
OloEditor/SandboxProject/Assets/Grooms/HumanSource/build_human_hair.py— roots, part/regrowth, guide roles and scan clearance must reproduce the cooked pair without hiding a runtime scalp collapse.OloEngine/tests/Rendering/PropertyTests/SkinRiggedHeadEvidenceTest.cpp— native evidence uses the real Scene motion pipeline; packed identity and unique camera selection pin the delivery seams.docs/analysis/digital-human-hair-quality-1593.md— compare crown, front, profile and motion against baseline/reference; inspect truthful hybrid/LOD/support results and the detail/memory trade-off.What I verified, and how — The complete final recipe repeats identically; current shipping pair passes native full-cycle, cold/warm and pack/game checks. Inspected GL/Vulkan stills, settings edges, distance handovers and motion are backed by capture identities and actual renderer/RT telemetry.
Least confident about — Whether the ordered side highlights meet the programme's film-quality bar. Counts and test success do not settle that; the issue remains referenced rather than automatically closed.
