Perl has a yearly release cycle for major versions. Since we tend to track new features quite closely, and lacking a huge team for backward-compatibility porting, we're applying a 2-version policy: - we support the current and previous major versions - that means the minimum required Perl version is likely to increase yearly - although we only apply this when a feature from a newer version of Perl is required

We now support the most recent 2 major versions of Perl, so that we can start using some of the features added in the last 5 years.
