User description

Description

Removes the unused backend/src/middleware/auth.middleware.js file.

Problem

The repository uses ESM ("type": "module"), but this middleware uses CommonJS syntax (require and module.exports).

The file also references JWT_SECRET, which is not documented in the environment configuration.

Verification showed:

  • The file is not imported anywhere.
  • The file is not referenced by any route.
  • The file is not executed anywhere in the application.
  • Active authentication is handled by backend/src/middleware/auth.js using Firebase Authentication.

Solution

Removed the unused middleware file.

Type of Change

  • Refactor

Related Issue

Fixes #4169

Testing

  • Verified file is not imported anywhere.
  • Verified file is not referenced anywhere.
  • Confirmed active authentication uses auth.js.

Remove an unused authentication middleware file

What Changed

  • Removed an unused authentication middleware file that was not used by any route or active login flow
  • Cleans up an outdated server-side auth check that relied on a separate token setup

Impact

✅ Less confusion around active login handling
✅ Lower risk of using outdated auth logic
✅ Cleaner backend maintenance
