[Tracker] Native conversation fidelity: execution → transcript → recovery → Notes #273

Open

Description

@BunsDev

Goal

Make Modex's existing native Codex/Claude capabilities form one accurate, inspectable, recoverable conversation experience: request → plan/context → question/approval → execution → diff/tests → final answer → project Notes → companion reconnect.

This tracker coordinates eight bounded implementation issues. It is not a request to rebuild Modex or add another coding runtime. Every issue, including this tracker, contains a copyable initial long-running goal prompt and a separate follow-up/resumption prompt.

Baseline and evidence

Reviewed 2026-10-18; refreshed main baseline: 89c98f280292b13fd9b1c7af1bf2fe65cd2fa0d1. Reconcile against the actual branch before implementing; descriptions below are source observations, not new live acceptance results.

The additional-permissions response fix, basic Sources cards, attachments, plugins/images, project Notes, and journal/cursor support already exist. Extend or verify them rather than reopening them as missing. Release preparation is separately tracked in #272; do not expand its scope or infer publication from that PR's state. The useful lifecycle work discussed in closed PR #250 must retain claude -p.

Implementation checklist

Dependency order

Issue Prerequisites for completion Work that can begin earlier
#274 None Native fixtures, schema capture, contract implementation.
#275 None for a narrow lifecycle repair; coordinate interfaces with #274 Native reproduction and lifecycle tests.
#276 #274, #275 Request-schema and race-fixture inventory.
#277 #274 Parser fixtures/reference captures independent of shared contract edits.
#278 #274, #277 Existing source/asset ownership audit.
#279 #274, #276 Legacy snapshot and paired replay fixtures.
#280 #274, #276, #277, #278 Scoped Notes and task-context fixture inventory.
#281 #274–#280 Golden scenario/reference manifest and acceptance inventory.

Start with #274. #275 can be investigated independently, but do not run conflicting workers against shared backend/runner files. After the contract lands, renderer and request/replay work can progress on separate owned branches with explicit interface coordination. This checklist and each child's Blocked by section record dependency order; they are not automatic execution or merge authorization.

Global constraints

  • Coding turns remain codex app-server and claude -p; no Responses/API executor, Claude Agent SDK migration, duplicated tool dispatcher, or replay-triggered execution.
  • Keep native sandbox/approval policy and explicit Ask/Always/YOLO semantics. Do not silently broaden permissions, activate the preview approval gate, or treat a model judgment as authorization.
  • Jev remains bounded decision support; do not disclose file bodies, transcript reasoning, or new context-map contents to it.
  • Extend existing Notes, Images, Canvas, source links, and SQLite journal. Do not introduce a graph database, vector store, new widget platform, or authoritative-event-store migration.
  • Unknown provider capability, phase, citation, execution outcome, or reasoning text stays unknown/unavailable. Do not fabricate a trace or label fixtures as live evidence.
  • Preserve current privacy guarantees accurately: Streamer Mode is visual masking, not universal sanitization of clipboard, accessibility text, images, or arbitrary secrets.
  • Follow current AGENTS.md: owned worktree, pinned pnpm, small signed commits, no direct main edits, no destructive cleanup of someone else's work. Release/tag/merge/publication require the repository's separate authorization gates.

Definition of done

  • Each child links its implementation PR and a criterion-by-criterion evidence receipt.
  • Native message identity survives adapters, UI, persistence, retry, and supported paired-client replay.
  • Stop/denial/stale questions and simultaneous answers do not repeat actions or report false success.
  • A small real coding task has an inspectable plan, actual diff/check evidence, and an explicitly saved project Note.
  • Legacy history and unsupported clients retain a safe readable fallback.
  • Fresh pnpm build, pnpm typecheck, pnpm test, and pnpm test:e2e results name the exact tested SHA; skips and native/human gates are recorded separately.
  • Supported behavior and reference screenshots are versioned; no claim of universal pixel-identical ChatGPT/Codex replication.

Checkpoint required before pausing an implementation

Record in the child issue or linked PR: owned worktree/branch; base and head SHA; completed acceptance criteria and evidence; exact commands/results including failures/skips; schema/CLI versions; outstanding native/human or external gates; files/interfaces changed; and the next executable step. Do not paste secrets, private reasoning, or unredacted logs. An implementation checkpoint is not a claim that background work continues.

Long-running goal prompt — coordinate implementation

Bring TypeSafeAI/modex to the native conversation-fidelity target defined in tracker #273 and implementation issues #274–#281. Start by reading current AGENTS.md, docs/status.md, each child issue, existing PRs, and their evidence. Refresh main and reconcile what has already landed; do not repeat the permission fix, journal, plugin system, Notes migration, or release preparation. Use an owned worktree and the installed Superpowers planning, TDD, debugging, and verification skills. Select the earliest unblocked child, initially #274, and complete that bounded slice before widening scope. Coordinate shared runner/types/backend files rather than running conflicting workers in parallel.
Preserve native CLI execution and policies. Keep Jev out of coding and file contents. Record real provider capability and distinguish summaries, commentary, final output, evidence, and unknown states. Follow the child's red/green tests, update documentation, make small signed commits, and prepare a linked PR with exact evidence. Continue through other unblocked work only when the previous contract is available and ownership is safe. Never bypass release, approval, signing, or cleanup gates. Before stopping, leave the required issue/PR checkpoint with base/head SHAs, completed criteria, exact commands/results, failures/skips, remaining native/human gates, and the next executable step. Do not claim background work or completion without evidence. Do not merge or publish without separate authorization.

Follow-up long-running goal prompt — reconcile and finish

Resume Modex tracker #273 from the latest repository and issue evidence, not from the previous assistant's success summary. Read the last checkpoints, current main, linked PR diffs and CI, and the acceptance lists in #274–#281. Verify worktree ownership before resuming; use a new worktree when required. Classify each child as implemented and verified, implemented but unverified, partial, blocked, or not started. Re-run the checks that establish any completion claim and preserve historical failures instead of overwriting them.
Select the highest-priority unmet dependency or failing end-to-end boundary. Reproduce it, add a failing regression, make the smallest compatible repair, and rerun targeted and integration tests. Verify Stop/request cleanup, native identity, streaming/replay equivalence, project-scoped Notes, and absence of duplicate side effects across desktop and supported companions. Keep existing CLI runtimes, feature flags, authority and privacy boundaries. Do not publish a release, enable an approval gate, or merge without separate authorization. Update the tracker and child receipts with exact SHAs, evidence links, changed behavior and unresolved acceptance gates. Stop with an actionable checkpoint when a genuine external blocker remains; never mark a mock-only result as live-provider or human accessibility acceptance.

    Tracker checkpoint — 2026-10-18 (coordinator session 059b249c)

Base for everything below: main at 89c98f2 (unchanged since the tracker was written; no CF work has landed).

    Who owns what

    Child Owner Branch / state
#274 CF-1 session notes-folders-workspace-migration (dedicated CF-1 goal) PR #282 at 2fe9488, CI running when checked. Reviewed by this session (review): two compatibility findings, older clients reading ok, and folding unknown
#275 CF-2 session modex-5d cf2-claude-lifecycle at feb2166, PR pending. Shared-file edits are additive only (approval withdrawal signal, TurnResult.stop, withdrawn approval items), listed on #274; it will rebase onto CF-1
    #276 CF-3 session on cf3-human-requests checkpoints on #276; blocked on #274/#275
#277 CF-4 this session: parser slice only PR #283 at 68b89c8; semantic turn rendering waits for #274
#278–#281 not started blocked by their dependencies

So that the shared runner/types/backend files have one writer, I stopped my own CF-1 attempt when the CF-1 owner showed up. It stays local and unpushed in .worktrees/cf1-conversation-events for that owner to reuse:

    • 98fa961: fixture tests that fail on 89c98f2. They show four defects:
      • Codex reasoning concatenates summary and raw text.
      • A commentary message that keeps streaming after a command starts becomes a fragment plus a duplicated copy.
      • Claude redacted_thinking disappears.
      • A denied tool reads as a failed one.
    • 3881cb0: a contract with 9 green projector tests.

    Native facts recorded (for #274/#275/#276)

    • Codex 0.163.0 (generated protocol types):
      • MessagePhase = commentary | partial_answer | final_answer, nullable on items.
      • Reasoning summary and text deltas carry separate indexes.
      • Command and file statuses include declined; webSearch has no status.
      • One local rollout had 227 commentary and 2 final_answer messages, with encrypted-only reasoning.
    • Claude Code 2.1.302 (one live Haiku probe plus the CLI's own protocol schema):
      • Each stream_event carries api_message_id and uuid.
      • The assistant line for a block arrives before its content_block_stop.
      • thinking_display (@internal; enum summarized | omitted | highlights).
      • can_use_tool carries tool_use_id.
      • The native interrupt is control_request {subtype: "interrupt"}. Its success receipt (interrupt_receipt_v1) carries still_queued.
      • The CLI withdraws its own pending requests with control_cancel_request, which today's ClaudeBackend ignores.

    CF-4 parser slice

PR #283: base 89c98f2, head 68b89c8dac5436012e498958bf6f4f6b89e88f61, four signed commits.

    • Markdown.tsx now parses with micromark plus GFM (pinned exact dependencies) and renders React elements only. Raw HTML stays text, only http(s) links are links, images are never fetched, and task boxes are inert.
    • Code blocks get a language label and a Copy that only reaches main's clipboard:write.
    • While a reply streams, only its last block is parsed again (measured 0.15–0.18 ms a delta, against 0.8 ms before). The whole text is parsed once it rests for 300 ms.
    • A bounded cache makes reopening a thread cheap.
    • Measured regression, in the PR for review: first open of a 200-message, 239 KB thread takes about 160 ms, against about 40 ms before. The main renderer chunk grows by 81 kB.

Commands on 68b89c8, all passing, run locally on macOS:

    • pnpm install --frozen-lockfile, pnpm build, pnpm typecheck.
    • pnpm test: desktop 1,484 passed + 16 skipped; every other package fully green.
    • pnpm test:e2e: desktop 320 passed + 3 skipped (the real-Open-Knowledge cases); site 7/7.

Each new unit and e2e test was seen failing first: on 89c98f2, or on 505b488 for the Copy test. CI for #283 is pending.

Open on #277: everything that needs #274 or ThreadView.tsx. That is final answer by phase, outcome labels, reasoning labels, Jump to latest, and focus/selection under sustained updates. Also open: theme screenshots at 900×600, and human VoiceOver acceptance.

    Next executable steps

    1. Carry native message identity, phases and outcomes from the CLIs into the transcript (CF-1) #282: resolve the two review findings, then CI and Val's merge decision.
    2. CF-2 rebases onto the landed CF-1 contract before review.
    3. CF-4: once [P1][CF-1] Preserve native turn/item identity, message phases, and execution outcomes end to end #274 lands, the semantic slice consumes finalAnswerIndex/itemFacts from shared/conversation-events.ts in ThreadView.tsx.
    4. Merge, release and approval-gate decisions remain Val's; nothing here was merged or published.

    Tracker checkpoint 2 — 2026-10-18 (coordinator session 059b249c)

main is now 7780093 (#282, CF-1, merged at 08:05Z). Nothing else has landed.

    Child State
#274 CF-1 Merged (#282). My review's two compatibility findings were not addressed before merge. I recorded finding 1 (older clients read ok-less unresolved tools as Done) on #279 for CF-6. Finding 2 (folding unknown) is fixed in #284.
    #275 CF-2 Session modex-5d, branch cf2-claude-lifecycle at 172b13f, no PR yet; rebasing onto CF-1.
#276 CF-3 Owned by the cf3-human-requests session; still blocked on #275.
#277 CF-4 Two PRs, two owners, no file overlap except one docs/status.md bullet:
    • #283 (this session): parser, safe links, code-block Copy. Updated to acba096 (main merged in). The full local run on that SHA passed: build, typecheck, pnpm test (desktop 1,511 passed and 16 skipped of 1,527), pnpm test:e2e (desktop 320 passed and 3 skipped, site 7/7). CI is running.
    • #284 (another session): typed turn layout, covering final answer by phase, attempts, reasoning tags, not folding unknown, and Jump to latest. I reviewed it: with unknown unfolded, every Codex web search stays unfolded, because codex-cli 0.163.0's webSearch has no status or error field. A fix was offered there.
    #278 CF-5 Unblocked once #277's renderer boundary lands (#284).
#279 CF-6 Blocked on #276. It has my paired-client input: the ok fallback, and that the iPhone shows a checkmark for every finished tool.
    #280, #281 Blocked.

I started the same CF-4 slice locally (cf4-turn-outcomes), then stopped when #284 appeared. It holds one unpushed commit, c378c9b, kept only as a reference for the web-search fix.

    Next executable steps:

    1. Render transcript Markdown with CommonMark and GitHub's extensions (CF-4 parser slice) #283: CI on acba096, then Val's merge decision.
    2. Lay out each turn from its typed items: final answer by phase, live items, attempts, Jump to latest (CF-4) #284: decide the web-search mapping, CI, merge.
    3. CF-2 PR.
    4. CF-3 after [P1][CF-2] Harden Claude Stop, late-message draining, and cancelled-request cleanup on claude -p #275; CF-5 after Lay out each turn from its typed items: final answer by phase, live items, attempts, Jump to latest (CF-4) #284.

Nothing was merged or released by this session.

    Tracker checkpoint 3 — 2026-10-18 (coordinator session 059b249c)

    main is now d3711c6. Landed so far: #282 (CF-1), #284 (CF-4 typed turns), #285 (CF-6 first half), #287 (CF-5 first part).

    This session's open PRs

    PR Head Local evidence CI
#283 CF-4: Markdown parser, safe links, code-block Copy 74833f7 (main at d3711c6 merged in) All checks passed on 046df0e (run 39116117568), CLEAN before #287 landed. 74833f7 is pending.
#288 CF-4: a completed Codex web search reads as done, so it folds again a258228 (main at d3711c6 merged in) Full build / typecheck / pnpm test on e188b6d passed (desktop 1,512 passed, 16 skipped). Targeted unit tests on a258228 passed (60/60). e2e not run locally (no renderer change) All checks passed on e188b6d. a258228 is pending.

#288 fixes a regression now on main. Since #284, unknown work stays unfolded, and every Codex web search read as unknown, because codex-cli 0.163.0 gives webSearch no status or error field. I raised it in review on #284 before it merged.

    Other children

    Environment blocker to record

The development Mac's disk ran out during this session (8 GB free of 927 GB at the low point), so builds and tests failed with ENOSPC. Those failures are recorded as environmental and were rerun. Each one is listed above.

    Local worktrees this session holds

None of these are pushed except where noted, and none should be pruned until this session ends:

    Next executable steps

    1. Val decides whether to merge Render transcript Markdown with CommonMark and GitHub's extensions (CF-4 parser slice) #283 and Read a completed Codex web search as done, so it folds again (CF-4) #288, each after its CI passes and its branch is current with main.
    2. Make Claude Stop truthful on claude -p: native interrupt, bounded exit, withdrawn prompts (CF-2) #286 (CF-2), then [P1][CF-3] Add typed native questions and a main-owned, race-safe human-request lifecycle #276 (CF-3), then the second half of [P1][CF-6] Extend the existing event journal and paired-client replay to preserve typed conversation state #279, then [P2][CF-7] Connect a bounded task plan to project files, verification evidence, and a saved Note #280, then [P1][CF-8] Prove the complete conversation-to-Notes workflow with E2E, native acceptance, and rollout gates #281.
    3. CF-4 still open: theme screenshots at 900×600, long-transcript first-open cost (measured in Render transcript Markdown with CommonMark and GitHub's extensions (CF-4 parser slice) #283), and human VoiceOver acceptance.

Nothing was merged, tagged or released by this session.

Checkpoint 4 (coordinator session 059b249c): both of this session's PRs are ready for Val's merge decision. main is at d3711c6.

    PR Head CI State
#283 CF-4 parser, safe links, code-block Copy 74833f7 every check passed CLEAN
#288 CF-4 Codex web searches fold again a258228 every check passed. The win32 job's first attempt crashed in the runner (0xC0000005 in electron-builder's icon step); the re-run passed. CLEAN

Both update docs/status.md under "On main, unreleased". Whichever merges second will need a one-line rebase there, plus a CI rerun under the strict up-to-date rule.

Nothing was merged, tagged or released by this session. The remaining children are owned elsewhere or blocked, as checkpoint 3 lists.

CF-4 #277 #283 (parser, safe links, code-block Copy, narrow tables) this session head f1bbb28: all CI checks passed; one #294 behind main (docs/status.md only)
CF-4 #277 #288 (Codex web searches fold again) this session head d325b60: all CI checks passed; one #294 behind main (docs/status.md only)
    CF-4 #277 #295 (CF-4 completion, stacked on #283) another session fixes the remount-at-settle defect
    CF-8 #281 first part landed (#294) cf8-fidelity session

    This session since checkpoint 4:

Merge order: #283 then #295 (stacked); #288 is independent. #293 is stacked on #286 (CF-2). Until #295 lands, #283 alone still has the remount-at-settle defect.

    Overlaps for the owners:

Still needs Val or a human:

Next executable step for this session: review #293 (CF-3) against the contract once its CI is green, and keep #283 and #288 current with main. Nothing was merged or released by this session.

    Tracker checkpoint 6 — 2026-10-18 (coordinator session 059b249c)

main is at db0bbfd. Landed since checkpoint 5: #294 (CF-8 first part) and #296 (docs).

This session's PRs, all current with main:

PR Child Head Local evidence CI
#283 CF-4 parser, safe links, code-block Copy, narrow tables 89a86cc full run on fc16df4 passed; targeted checks on each later merge all checks passed, CLEAN
#288 CF-4 Codex web searches fold again 20a585e full build, typecheck and pnpm test on e188b6d; targeted checks on each later merge all checks passed, CLEAN
#299 CF-5 (new): show and copy a Codex memory citation's lines 3111e72 full run on 3165795: everything passed except one cleanup-hook timeout in owner-removal.spec.ts during a full-disk window (6/6 alone) all checks passed, CLEAN

    #299 in one paragraph:

    • Each "From Codex memory" citation gets Show lines and Copy.
    • A local-only main handler reads the cited lines, 1-based and inclusive, only inside $CODEX_HOME/memories. It refuses absolute paths, .., symlink escapes, directories, oversized files and bad ranges, and caps excerpts at 64 KiB.
    • Native evidence comes from local codex-cli 0.163.0 sessions: paths are relative, and lines are 1-based.
    • The tests failed first: 7 unit and 2 e2e.
    • It composes cleanly with Wait for the evidence turn to render before unfolding it (e2e race) #297, verified by a trial merge (6/6).

    Other open PRs:

    Still unowned and blocked:

Gates for Val or a human:

    • Merge decisions. Each PR must be current with main when it merges.
    • Disk space on the development Mac: it dropped to 1.9 GB free during this run.
    • Live Codex/Claude acceptance.
    • Human keyboard and VoiceOver review.

Nothing was merged or released by this session.

Tracker checkpoint: CF-3, CF-6 request half, CF-7 clarifications and CF-8 request variants are built and green locally, blocked on #286 (2026-10-18)

Blocker (external): CF-3 can land only after CF-2 (#286) is on main, and #286 is not merged.

    Landed this session

    PR Merge What
#297 ce75495 Test-only race fix in the evidence and typed-turns specs.
    #301 844ae04 CF-8 machine-only rows. Checkpoint on #281.

    #301 holds:

Ready, rebased onto CF-2's head 71d905a

All commits are signed, with no harness co-authors.

    Slice Branch Head Range
    CF-3 (#276, PR #293) cf3-requests (local only, so #293's CI doesn't compete with #286) c399338 71d905a..c399338, 4 commits
    CF-6 request half (#279) cf6-requests (pushed, no PR) 01df9b8 c399338..01df9b8, 5 commits
    CF-7 clarification half (#280) cf7-clarify (pushed, no PR) fd516e1 01df9b8..fd516e1, 3 commits
    CF-8 request variants (#281) cf8-requests (pushed, no PR) c30ac57 fd516e1..c30ac57, 3 commits

    Files changed:

    • CF-3 (23 files): shared/human-requests.ts, runner.ts, backends/{codex,claude,types}.ts, companion.ts, QuestionCard.tsx, ThreadView.tsx, TurnContent.tsx, App.tsx, styles.css, types.ts, turn-layout.ts, store-desktop/src/main/demo.ts, its tests and e2e, docs/human-requests.md, docs/status.md. The rebase resolved conflicts with CF-7's plan item, imports and Save to Notes footer, and placed the status line under "On main, unreleased".
    • CF-6:
      • What it adds: approval and question cards record answeredBy and delivery (sending, sent, uncertain) through the existing item events, journal, snapshots, paired desktops and the phone.
      • Restart: a card still sending becomes uncertain, is inert, and is never re-sent.
      • The window adds "Answered on your phone." and an uncertain line under the card.
      • Fix: the phone got a 404 on any thread started on the Mac (UUID ids since Install verified macOS updates with durable draft recovery #181, v0.0.12) for answer, send, policy and archive.
      • Files: runner.ts, companion.ts, types.ts, human-requests.ts, ThreadView.tsx, QuestionCard.tsx, styles.css, test/request-journal.test.ts (new), companion.test.ts, human-requests.test.ts, e2e/human-requests.spec.ts, docs/{human-requests,event-journal,status}.md.
    • CF-7:
      • What it adds: the task record and Notes list each clarification with its answer, a secret hidden. An unanswered or unconfirmed clarification reads as such and is never filled in.
      • Files: shared/task-context.ts, test/task-context.test.ts, e2e/plan-clarification.spec.ts (new), docs/{task-context,status}.md.
    • CF-8:
      • What it adds: a native withdrawal, simultaneous desktop and phone answers, a phone reconnecting after the decision (journal on), and a clarifying question inside the path, in e2e/conversation-fidelity.spec.ts. The fixture counts every decision the CLI reads.
      • Files: that spec, plus the acceptance receipt's matrix and defects, conversation-fidelity.md and status.md.

The checks below ran on the previous heads (b09e3ef, d528090, a43d7ae, 806d5d6). Each current head differs from its tested head only in docs/status.md's In-flight paragraph, now left as main words it.

    Red first (TDD)

    • CF-6:
      • all 6 cases in request-journal.test.ts failed on the missing fields;
      • answerNote failed (no export);
      • the UUID companion route failed with a 404;
      • the CF-8 e2e also hit that 404 first.
    • CF-7: the record test failed with no clarifications; the e2e failed at ## Clarifications in the saved note.
    • Earlier defects: the settle fix had 7 needless item_updates; the approval overflow was 160 px; the theme switch received "graphite".
    • CF-8's variants are acceptance tests of built behaviour, so they had no red phase of their own.

    Commands and results

macOS 26.7.1, M3 Max, Node v24.18.1, pnpm 10.34.5, load average 50–230 from other sessions.

    • CF-3 at b09e3ef:
      • pnpm build: passed.
      • apps/desktop pnpm test: 1,561 passed, 16 skipped, 2 failed on timeouts (companion-network 4.7 s, knowledge 5.8 s, at load average 155). Both files passed alone, 19 of 19. Second stage: 21 of 21.
      • pnpm --filter @modex/store-desktop test: passed.
      • e2e human-requests, approvals, claude-lifecycle, typed-turns, companion, conversation-evidence, store-desktop: 24 of 24.
    • CF-6 at d528090:
      • build and typecheck passed.
      • unit: 1,571 passed, 16 skipped, 0 failed; second stage 21 of 21.
      • store-desktop passed.
      • e2e human-requests, approvals, companion, event-journal, store-desktop, conversation-fidelity: 21 of 21.
    • CF-7 at a43d7ae: build and typecheck passed; e2e plan-clarification, task-to-notes, conversation-fidelity: 7 of 7; task-context unit tests 6 of 6.
    • CF-8 at 806d5d6:
      • build and typecheck passed.
      • unit: 1,572 passed, 16 skipped, 0 failed; second stage 21 of 21.
      • store-desktop passed.
      • e2e conversation-fidelity (8 cases), plan-clarification, task-to-notes, human-requests, companion, typed-turns, transcript-measure: 22 of 22.
    • Not run locally: the rest of pnpm test:e2e (CI runs it), live providers and human VoiceOver.

    Failing or skipped:

    • The 16 skips are the suite's existing ones.
    • Load timeouts passed when rerun alone. CF-2's "an unconfirmed stop keeps the worktree" took 6.0 s under load and 2.8 s alone.
    • The golden fidelity case ran past 90 s at load average 100 and is now marked test.slow(). It takes 18 captures and relaunches.

    Exact next step

    1. Make Claude Stop truthful on claude -p: native interrupt, bounded exit, withdrawn prompts (CF-2) #286's owner merges main (28c6723) into it, and its CI goes green. Then the maintainer merges Make Claude Stop truthful on claude -p: native interrupt, bounded exit, withdrawn prompts (CF-2) #286.
    2. In .worktrees/cf3-requests: git fetch && git rebase --onto origin/main 71d905a cf3-requests. No slice edits the In-flight paragraph Settle open docs claims, point In flight at the tracker, record the Store grant (steward cycle 2) #300 rewrote (Val's [Tracker] Docs and plans steward #290 decision: no PR list there), so no conflict is expected. Rerun the plan's checks, run git push --force-with-lease, confirm Answer each approval and question once, and show Codex questions as cards (CF-3) #293 now targets main (GitHub retargets it when Make Claude Stop truthful on claude -p: native interrupt, bounded exit, withdrawn prompts (CF-2) #286's branch is deleted), then ~/.claude/scripts/gh-merge-when-green.sh 293 --squash.
    3. CF-6: git rebase --onto origin/main c399338 cf6-requests, push, open the PR (body drafted), then guard and merge.
    4. CF-7: git rebase --onto origin/main 01df9b8 cf7-clarify, and the same.
    5. CF-8: git rebase --onto origin/main fd516e1 cf8-requests, and the same. After CF-3, CF-6 and CF-7 land, fill the receipt's children table with their merge SHAs.
    6. After each merge, post a checkpoint on its child issue and remove its worktree.

    Tracker checkpoint 7 — 2026-10-18 (coordinator session 059b249c)

    main is at 28c6723. Landed since checkpoint 6: #297 (CF-5 e2e race), #301 (CF-8 captures and measurement), #300 (docs steward cycle 2).

New this checkpoint: #302 (CF-5). A turn's patch can be compared with the working tree, file by file. It is stacked on #299.

    • Acceptance line: "Captured turn patch and later working-tree changes cannot be confused; stale revisions are visibly identified."
    • What it does: each file the patch touched reads as one of:
      • As this turn left it
      • Still has this turn's edit
      • Changed since this turn
      • Deleted since this turn
      • Not compared, with the reason
    • Where it reads: main reads only inside the thread's folder and returns verdicts, never contents. It writes nothing and runs nothing.
    • Native evidence: codex-cli 0.163.0 fileChange paths are absolute, an update is hunks only, and an add is the whole file. Codex items now keep per-file args.files.
    • Commits: 5ae9155, f9b30b8, then merge 3afdc1e, all signed.
    • Receipt: [P1][CF-5] Add provenance-aware citations, command evidence, and owned artifact actions to chat #278 (comment)

Attempt 1 of unit + e2e (macOS) failed one unrelated test, canvas.spec.ts:201 (the main view stayed hidden after Escape in the Canvas guest), with 340 passed. Canvas does not use the Markdown code; the re-run passed.
#288 CF-4 Codex web searches fold again e9fc26c (main 28c6723 merged) full build, typecheck and pnpm test on e188b6d all checks passed

    #302's local runs:

    • On 3afdc1e: build and typecheck passed.
      • Unit tests: core 16/16, desktop 1,546 passed and 16 skipped plus 21/21, site 10/10, store-desktop 16/16, worktree scripts 109/109.
      • e2e: targeted 22/22 (patch state, evidence, fidelity, typed turns, event journal, transcript measure), and site 7/7.
    • On f9b30b8: the full pnpm test:e2e ran 336 passed, 3 skipped, 1 failed. event-journal.spec.ts:9 hit a 90 s timeout at load average ~140, and passed on 3afdc1e.
      • pnpm test stopped at its first stage: worktree scripts, where children were killed by the script's 20 s timeout at load average 164. That stage passed 109/109 on 3afdc1e.

How #302 composes with in-flight PRs (trial merges):

    Owners now:

    Still unowned and blocked:

Outside the tracker, at Val's request: #304. A project's chat-sidebar menu gets Move to new workspace…, which makes a notes workspace and moves the project into it in one step, even while only the default workspace exists. It is red-first and fully tested locally on 016c329; CI is pending. Val's dev app now runs from that branch.

Gates for Val or a human:

Next executable step: once #286 and #293 land, claim CF-5's retained full log on #278, with red tests for raw output deltas through the observation contract. Until then, keep #283, #288, #299 and #302 current and green.

Nothing was merged, tagged or released by this session.

    Tracker checkpoint 8 — 2026-10-18 (coordinator session 059b249c)

main is at 7ec5f14. CF-2 landed as #286 (6db0818), followed by #305 (7ec5f14, test only). Earlier landings since checkpoint 7: #303 (docs).

This session's PRs. Each head merges main at 6db0818 (CF-2), and each merge was clean.

PR Child Head CI on that head
#283 CF-4 parser, safe links, code-block Copy, narrow tables ba00fbc all checks passed
#288 CF-4 Codex web searches fold again b54416d all checks passed
#299 CF-5 memory-citation Show lines / Copy 218467a macOS attempt 1 failed only store-desktop.spec.ts:150 (the composer draft was empty after Store protocol recovery), with 339 passed. This is the same test that failed on #294's first run. #302 passed on the same code. Re-run in progress.

#304 Not a tracker item: Move to new workspace from the chat sidebar (Val's request) 64f42a5 all checks passed

Local runs on #302's merged head 4fd4af8 (this includes #299 and CF-2):

    • Build and typecheck passed.
    • Desktop unit tests: 1,570 passed, 16 skipped, and 1 cancelled. The cancelled one was demo.test.js:44, which hit its 5 s timeout at load average ~56; it passed 3/3 alone. The second stage passed 21/21.
    • e2e: patch state, evidence, fidelity, and CF-2's claude-lifecycle and claude-live-stop. 14 passed, 1 skipped (the live spec, which needs a real account).

    Merge currency.

Unblocked by CF-2, still waiting for CF-3 (#293):

Gates for Val or a human:

    • Merge decisions.
    • Live Codex and Claude acceptance.
    • Human keyboard and VoiceOver review.
    • Disk space: it dropped to 120 MB free at 13:00 CDT, and an e2e install hit ENOSPC. That run was repaired and redone.
      • Measured for information: simulator devices 20 GB, temp 4.4 GB (894 modex-e2e-* homes), ~/Library/Caches 5.9 GB, ~/.coven 46 GB (not to be cleared). Nothing was deleted.

Next executable step: when #293 lands, claim CF-5's retained full log on #278 and write its red tests first, as the plan lists.

#316 (CF-3 delivery receipts): taken over on Val's instruction. Its Codex author is gone, and the CF lead is busy with #295.

    • Fix: the companion now keeps an approval as an approval while its decision is sending, so the phone shows "Approved" with no buttons. Only uncertain delivery and withdrawn requests become notices. That was the real iPhone companion failure (CompanionFlowTests line 348).
    • Merge of main: signed, with companion.ts and docs/human-requests.md resolved. It keeps main's unknown-kind fallback and the Who answered bullet from Record who answered from the phone's YOLO switch and paired desktops, and test a card open at a crash (CF-6) #329.
    • Checks so far: build, typecheck and the 61 companion, request, runner and journal tests pass locally. The full unit suite is running.

Landing order: #295 goes first. I'll push #316 now so its CI runs, but I won't start its guard until #295 has landed. If you'd rather land #316 first, say so here.

Correction from the branch-review session: #335 lands #316, not this session. I missed the 00:12Z note on #316 and duplicated the work at 04:52Z on #316's own branch (491e03a). #335 came first, has Val's approval, and its guard is running, so I won't start a guard on #316.

The two differ in one place. #335 fixes the iPhone fixture so the approval is handed off and the phone sees it decided. My d3879a0 instead keeps a sending approval as an approval on the phone. #335 keeps #316's design (a sending decision is a notice until the handoff), so I'm leaving it at that. The commit stays on #316's branch only if you want it later.

When #335 lands and #316 closes, the old cf3-reconcile worktree is the only leftover. I hold its claim, and I'll clean it up through the worktree procedure.

    Tracker checkpoint 13 — 2026-10-20 (coordinator session 059b249c)

main is at 37406ee. Val approved these, and each landed through the merge guard (squash, all checks passed, signed commits):

    PR What On main
#328 CF-5: removal-only and notebook edits compared with the working tree; a deleted attachment can't be opened b71e89e
#332 CF-8: live smoke through the app. Claude Code 2.1.304 (Haiku) passed: edit and check, final answer, Stop mid-command. codex-cli 0.163.0 was refused by the account (usage_limit_exceeded, no credits until 2026-10-25 09:35); Modex showed rate_limited and ran nothing 75cb878
#335 CF-3: answer delivery only after the transport handoff. Supersedes #316. Also fixes the iPhone fixture's missing handoff (iPhone UI test red at line 348, then green; CompanionFlowTests 23/23, DemoWorkspaceTests 20/20) and two journal-resume backends from #309 0f5c785
#333 CF-4 completion. Supersedes #295. Keeps CF-1's last-reply fallback for a CLI with no phases (Claude), while a phase-typed turn, including Codex partial_answer, never gets a final answer by position. Restores main's fold expectations for the phase-less mock 37406ee

In progress: the pinned-candidate run on 37406ee (claim: #281 (comment)). It runs the full build, typecheck, unit, e2e, site e2e and iPhone UI classes, one stage at a time. #336 (CF-6 finding 10) is still in flight and isn't in this candidate.

    Still open:

    • Live Codex acceptance, and with it CF-5's structured web-search sample. Blocked by the account's usage limit until 2026-10-25 09:35. Rerun e2e/live-smoke.spec.ts with MODEX_LIVE_BACKENDS=codex.
    • Human keyboard and VoiceOver review.
    • Live native question acceptance (CF-3).
    • Leave a request open when saving its answer fails (CF-6, finding 10) #336 (CF-6), owned by another session.

Nothing was tagged or released by this session. #337 (release 0.3.0) belongs to another session and wasn't touched.

    Tracker checkpoint 14 — 2026-10-20 (coordinator session 059b249c)

main is at 6fafd24. Val approved each landing, and each went through the merge guard with signed commits.

    PR What On main
#336 CF-6 finding 10 (its owner's PR, updated with main and landed at Val's direction) 1b6f7a4
#341 Stop ends a Codex turn's background commands, or says it may not have. This came from live Codex acceptance after Val added credits. codex-cli 0.163.0 (unified_exec) moved sleep 30 into a background terminal, and turn/interrupt didn't end it, so the file was written 30 s after Modex said "interrupted". Modex now terminates the stopped turn's own background terminals through the app-server, never an earlier turn's. It calls a command interrupted only once Codex no longer lists it; otherwise the command reads unknown, with a notice. Live rerun on the fix: passed, and the file was never written 6fafd24

Live Codex acceptance (CF-8): verified on 2026-10-20. The edit and check passed, with a final answer and exit code 0. Stop passed with the fix. See docs/reviews/2026-10-19-live-smoke.md.

    Open, with evidence:

Human gate: Val is doing the keyboard and VoiceOver review now, on the dev build with #342 (25129c9) and the seeded offline scenario.

    Still open after these:

    • the human review's result;
    • the CF-8 candidate repin;
    • live native question capture (CF-3).

Next step: land #342, then #344 (each updated with main). Then repin the candidate, update #338 and record the review on #281.

    Tracker checkpoint 15 — 2026-10-20 (coordinator session 059b249c)

main is at ac7f7437. Since checkpoint 14, two PRs landed through the merge guard, with Val's approval and signed commits:

    PR What On main
#342 CF-8 keyboard focus. An answered approval, a folding turn, Stop and Jump to latest no longer drop focus onto the page body. Red/green e2e tests; the full desktop e2e passed 367 with 6 opt-in skips on d7ba645 1e634d5
#344 CF-5's last item: structured Codex web search. Built from a live app-server capture (test/fixtures/codex-websearch-0.163.0.json). Results show as unchecked links with snippets; the renderer re-checks every stored link c2ef5a0

    Open, by this session:

    • Say whether a check verified a turn's last change (CF-7 verification) #351 (CF-7 verification, head 5e14a40, base ac7f7437).
      • A turn reads verified only when a known test, build, typecheck or lint check passed after its last change. Failed, unknown and stale checks, and turns with no check, say so. Plan steps are never marked verified, because neither CLI links a check to a step.
      • Red/green: unit task-context 13/13; task-to-notes e2e 3/3. The desktop unit suite passed 1,723 with 16 skipped, on 600d067.
      • The full local e2e didn't complete: the disk filled (ENOSPC). CI runs it.
    • Preserve historical CF8 candidate results and keyboard review kit #338 (CF-8). The candidate record and the keyboard/VoiceOver checklist, docs/reviews/2026-10-20-keyboard-voiceover/. It needs a repin on the current main.

Found after landing, mine to fix: e2e/keyboard-answers.spec.ts:88 (#342's Jump to latest test) fails on slow CI runners: three times on #345. As analysed on #342, a follow-up chip grows the composer after the jump, the transcript is left short of the bottom, and the button stays. The real fix keeps the transcript pinned while the composer grows after Jump to latest. The red test makes the composer grow right after the jump.

Blocked: the disk is full. It's 927 GB with about 740 MB free, after removing 640 MB of this session's Xcode build folders. A new worktree needs about 400 MB, because Electron is extracted per worktree, and the candidate repin needs several GB. Val has the sizes.

    Still open:

Next step, once there's disk space: in a new worktree, the red/green fix for the Jump to latest pin. Then land #351 and the fix, repin the candidate on main (#338), and relaunch the VoiceOver review app.
