Release blocker: PyPI atlas-core name belongs to an unrelated project #24

Open

Description

@RichSchefren

Problem

pyproject.toml declares name = "atlas-core", but that PyPI project is owned by an unrelated voice-assistant project and is currently at version 1.2.0:

https://pypi.org/project/atlas-core/

As a result, Atlas must not publish or document pip install atlas-core as its distribution path. Users would receive the wrong software, and our current 0.1.0-alpha.1 version cannot be uploaded under that name.

Permanent fix

Choose and reserve a distinct distribution name before the first package release. The import package can remain atlas_core; only the PyPI distribution name needs to change.

Names confirmed unclaimed through the PyPI JSON API on 2026-07-16:

  • atlas-cognitive-memory
  • rich-atlas

atlas-memory is already taken by another AI-memory project.

Acceptance criteria

  • Select the public distribution name
  • Update [project].name in pyproject.toml
  • Update install commands and package metadata
  • Reserve/publish the first PyPI release under the selected name
  • Confirm pip install <selected-name> imports atlas_core

Richard selected atlas-cognitive-memory as the public distribution name.

Repository work completed in PR #37 and merged to master at 229df544944ffb1dadf4d155bcb41334e850da0c:

    • [project].name is now atlas-cognitive-memory
    • optional-install examples use the new distribution name
    • atlas_core remains the import package
    • atlas remains the console command
    • regression tests verify the distribution/import/version/CLI mapping
    • wheel and sdist build cleanly, pass twine check, and the wheel passes a clean install/import/CLI smoke test
    • all 21 protected GitHub checks passed

The PyPI JSON endpoint for atlas-cognitive-memory returned 404 immediately before the change, so the name is currently unclaimed. This issue remains open because the name is not reserved until the first authenticated PyPI publication. Remaining acceptance work:

    • configure PyPI publication credentials or a Trusted Publisher for this repository
    • publish 0.1.0a1
    • verify pip install atlas-cognitive-memory imports atlas_core from PyPI
